Hello and welcome to Wednesday’s Words with English with Languissimo® which will help you build your vocabulary so that you can improve your communication skills in English.

My name is Vanessa. I’m the founder and CEO of Languissimo®.

Today, I will cover the difference between “our” and “hour”.

-          “Our” means “notre” or “nos”. It’s a possessive adjective. It is used before a noun (singular or plural): “it’s our year” (c’est notre année), “these are our mistakes” (ce sont nos erreurs).

-          “Hour” means “heure”. It’s a noun. The “h” is not pronounced so “hour” is pronounced the same as “our”: [our]. “Hour” is used in some expressions: “rush hour” (l’heure de pointe), “in half an hour” (dans une demi-heure), “man or woman of the hour” (homme ou femme du moment), “on the hour” (à l’heure juste).

“Hour” is often used in the plural after a number: “in two hours” (dans 2 heures), “during the next 3 hours” (durant les 3 prochaines heures).

Some Practice Questions

-          Do you go to pubs during Happy Hour?

-          Do you think it’s our responsibility to make a difference?

Ta da! That’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed this podcast. Subscribe to English with Languissimo®, practice, take care and have a great Wednesday! Big hugs 😊
