Hello and welcome to Wednesday’s Words with English with Languissimo® which will help you improve your vocabulary so that you can communicate better in English.

My name is Vanessa Rocket. I’m the founder and CEO of Languissimo®.

Today, I will quickly cover the difference between “tongue” and “language”, following a special request.

-          “A tongue” is a part of the mouth that helps you speak.

There are a couple of expressions with the word “tongue”.

Mother tongue

Cat got your tongue?

To bite one’s tongue

To be on the tip of one’s tongue

-          “A language” refers mostly to the language we speak (including second languages). For example, the French language, the English language, etc.

There are other types of languages:

Body language

Sign language

The language of flowers

The language of colours

I’m sure there are more but these are the ones that come to my mind.

When you learn a second language, there are three main levels of language proficiency:

Beginner

Intermediate

Advanced

Some Practice Questions

-          What is your mother tongue?

-          What second languages do you speak?

-          What is your current level in English as a second language?

Ta da! That’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed this podcast. Subscribe to English with Languissimo®, practice, take care and talk to you soon! Big hugs 😊
