Hello and welcome to Wednesday’s Words with English with Languissimo® which will help you improve your vocabulary so that you can communicate better in English.

My name is Vanessa Rocket. I’m the founder and CEO of Languissimo®.

Today, I will quickly cover the difference between “first/last name” and “nickname”.

-          “First name” is the name that your parents gave you at birth.

-          “Last name” also called, family name or surname, can come from your father’s or both your parents’ side. It’s common now to have a combination of both your parents’ last names written with a hyphen between the 2.

-          “Nickname” is the name someone gives you because they either make fun of you or they like you. It can stay with you for a very long time. For example, Dwayne Johnson is known as “the Rock”. It was his ring name when he was a wrestler, but many people still call him by his nickname.

Another example is Elvis Prestley who was nicknamed “the King”.

-          Do you like your first name?

-          Is your last name a combination of both your parents?

-          Do you have a nickname?
