Prioritizing Your Progress: Setting Goals and Taking Action

Treveal C.W. Lynch Season 7 Episode 141

Just because you want to improve your life, doesn't necessarily mean you've made what it takes to improve your life, a priority and this is what so many are overlooking!

Summary

In this episode, Treveal C.W. Lynch discusses the importance of prioritizing progress and shares a three-step strategy to do so.

He emphasizes the need to get to God before the world gets to you and to establish the right perspective on your goals and dreams.

The three prayers he suggests are: repentance (acknowledging the need for a correct perspective), revelation (asking for the mercy to receive the right perspective), and resolution (accepting the grace to align your attention, attitude, and actions with the new perspective).

By prioritizing progress and practicing these prayers, you can experience significant growth and achieve your goals.

Takeaways

Prioritizing progress involves setting goals and actively working towards them.

Getting to God before the world gets to you helps establish the right perspective.

The three prayers to prioritize progress are: repentance, revelation, and resolution.

Repentance involves acknowledging the need for a correct perspective.
Revelation is asking for the mercy to receive the right perspective.

Resolution is accepting the grace to align your attention, attitude, and actions with the new perspective.

Hey, hey, hey, what it is, what it do, what it be, what is good, my good people. You know what it is, you know what time it is. Yes, welcome once again, you know where you is. This is the place where possibilities become perspective, yes.

Welcome once again into the I Am The Possible universe, the I Am The Possible podcast experience. Thank you so much for rocking with me for another season. Kicking off season number seven. Guys, listen, I am, as I'm always so excited to be with you in this moment, to share this space and this place, to share this information, to share this inspiration.

In this new season, I've gone through so much in this last season, so much to share, so many lessons learned, so many stories. But before I get into anything else, I want to pause for the cause. And you guys know what that is. You are the cause. You are the reason that I do what I do. As I've always said, your presence is the greatest present that you guys could ever give me. So thank you so much for every download, for every share, for every comment.

for every review. Thank you so much for engaging with this content and just engaging with me. So it is an honor and it is a privilege to share with you today. Guys, today I want to talk about prioritizing your progress. Prioritizing your progress. I don't know if you've ever thought about that, but sometimes we think that we want to go somewhere, we want to do something, we want to become something, we want to achieve something.

And we think that we're already motivated, we're already inspired, we're already, you know, built up and we're already moving towards that thing. But sometimes we've unknowingly, we've never really prioritized our progress. We've set goals for ourselves. We've identified where we want to go, what we want to do. We've identified who we want to become, but we've not prioritized.

Treveal C.W. Lynch (02:21.464)
our progress. other words, we haven't prioritized the literal movement from going from where we are to where we want to be. We know that we want to buy that house. We know that we want to get that degree. We know that we want to get that promotion. We know that we want to make X amount of money per year, but we haven't prioritized the movement, the actual progress from going from where we are to where we want.

to actually go and so today I wanna unpack this a little bit with a few notes that I have in front of me and then I wanna give you a spiritual practice, something that's going to bring awareness because what I've discovered is that it's not the big leaps that create the most momentum, but it's the steady, consistent, right? It's the tortoise and the hare.

right analogy is the consistency, something that I've not been, right? Let me just be honest, it's something that I've not been over the last couple of years, right? That inconsistency, but being consistent, being faithful over a few small tweaks, these subtle tweaks, that's what leads to big, big change. I think I released a video the other day where I was in the gym and I was lifting weights and I was just, I was sharing.

You know, the idea that big change is waiting for little change to happen is not the big leaps. It's the small steps that get us to our destinations. And so many of us, we just battle with consistency and we battle with with clarity. We battle with our confidence in terms of the decisions that we need to make and the directions that we need to take. And so today I'm going to hook you up with a three step strategy, a three prayer strategy.

There's going to be three different prayers that I want you to start to practice in your life. That's going to create the awareness that's going to create the the momentum that you need from the inside out to begin to put your progress. You know, as a priority in your life so that you can begin to see those those results. So the first thing that I want to share here is the idea that I've shared many, many times before getting to God before the world gets to you. Get to God.

Treveal C.W. Lynch (04:43.92)
before the world gets to you. The reason that I preach that and the reason that I teach that so much and with such passion and with such consistency is because many times, and I mean everything that we're doing, it's going right from the mind, from the brain, from the internal right to the external. So we're led, right, our behaviors is dictated by our belief systems.

What we do is first conceived, right? Stephen Covey says that everything goes through two creations. It's first created in the mind and then in the material or the movement or the momentum, right? And so what I've learned is if we get to God before we get to the rest of the world, then we're set up, we're better prepared, we're better equipped to follow through and do the things that we want to do.

And so in this context, we want to begin to prioritize our progress because again, you can identify a goal and never prioritize actual movement. Like that's possible. I want to buy the house, but you don't prioritize the steps necessary to getting you to the house, just as an example. So I've always said, get to God before the world gets to you. The reason that you want to get to God before the world gets to you is because of this word perspective.

Right, my favorite word, right, where possibilities become perspective. It's the perspective that you have each and every day. Remember, it's not the big leaps, it's the small steps. So if you count each day as an opportunity to take another step or to take several small steps, what's going to fuel that and feed that, know, feed that is going to be the perspective that you have. If you have a crappy perspective,

about yourself, about God, about the situation, about life in general, then you're not going to be motivated to do very much with the resources that God's given you. So let's get to God and get God's perspective on things and use that as food and fuel for the journey, all right? All right, let's see, looking at some of these notes here. All

Treveal C.W. Lynch (06:57.286)
So the first thing that I want you to do and the first thing that I want you to really be aware of rather than I do, but just be aware of is that you're getting ahead of your day. And what I mean by that is your day is going to be comprised of known challenges, unknown challenges, known barriers, unknown barriers, to do's and tasks.

you know, which are known. And then there's going to be some things that you're to be called to do, excuse me, that you don't know of yet. They're just going to come sporadically. They're going to come ad hoc, right, out of left field, as we say. And so you're going to also deal with perspectives from other people that, hey, you're going to go into this meeting, I know what to expect. Or you're going to go into this situation, I know who I'm going to encounter. Those things you already know.

Right? Or you're going to go into this meeting or into this situation or into this, you know, environment and you're to be met with some challenges and some perspectives and some ideas that you just weren't even aware of. And so it's the idea of when we prioritize our progress, we want to get in front of, we want to get in front of all of the various challenges and perspectives and hurdles and blockers and barricades to our progress. We want to get in front of

before it begins to overwhelm, before it begins to rob you of your attention, before it begins to consume you. Because once the sun gets up and once the day starts, now you're in go mode, you're in grind mode, you're in hustle mode, and now you're less likely to be able to pause and to settle yourself, to remember what you're doing, why you're doing it, to get centered. You're gonna be less likely

to be able to do any sort of reflection, any dialing in and leaning into what matters to you. It's this idea of preparation. If we want to prioritize our progress, we must learn how to prepare for the day. And so we can get to God before this world bombards us with text messages, emails, phone calls, social media, the news, loved ones, family, like.

Treveal C.W. Lynch (09:24.932)
It's just, it gets out of hand, right? So the idea is getting ahead of it, all right? So, couple of things that I wanna call out. This is all about tapping into a certain feeling. I know we don't always like to talk about feelings, but the funny thing about feelings is that feelings are motivators, right? Feelings feed and feelings fuel our actions.

And so if we don't take time to get in front of our circumstances, in front of our challenges, in front of those things that we're going to be engaged in for the day, and we don't tap into a feeling, an emotion that we want to be aligned with, that we want to experience, that we want to live in and to live through, then we're going to be subject to, we're going

lend ourselves to the emotional responses and triggers and states that come along with the day's challenges and circumstances and issues. You see how that works? We have an opportunity each day to establish the kind of feeling that we want. can intentionally, and this is what this is about, intentionally invoking an emotion

that

because we're going from one conversation to the next, one meeting to the next, one environment to the next. And we're like, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, because we're engaging with people, situations, circumstances, we're trying to make decisions, we're trying to take direction. And all the while, we've said to ourselves, we wanna go from here to there. But yet life is saying, I don't really care about your goals. I don't even wanna acknowledge your goals. Life is saying, I care about what I care about.

Treveal C.W. Lynch (11:52.41)
Life is saying, come serve me. Life is saying, come and be concerned with what I'm concerned with. And so because we're attached to our jobs, our careers, our ministry, family members, loved ones, friends, we're attached to so many different things that if we don't take time to establish an emotional state that's going to feed and fuel, that's going to align with the desired outcome, the desired progress.

then we're just left up to chance. We're leaving our progress to chance. And that's not prioritizing your progress. When you leave it up to chance, that's not prioritizing it, okay? And so again, the value of this is we all have goals, we all have dreams, we all have things that we want to accomplish, but what I'm doing is I'm taking a step back and I'm saying, how do we prepare ourselves? This is the missing piece, this is things.

that we don't always talk about. How do we prepare? How do we best prepare to show up and to be the kind of person that we need to be in order to elicit progress towards that goal and that dream? Yep, that's what this is all about. All right? So let me jump right into it, man. Let me get right to the to -do's. I got three prayers, right? This is all about getting to God before the world gets to you. This is all about

learning how to pray and whether you are a spiritual person, a man or woman of faith, you know, one thing that I can say universally is that there is something within us all. There is a design that we cannot deny that deep within us all, whether we are, you know, claiming a certain faith or religion or whether we say we don't get into that, whoever you are, there's an element within you.

that you just can't shake, that you know that there is not only something more out there, but you know that you're connected to something greater, that you've been created by something greater, that you've been created for something greater. There is just a inner knowing. You may have suppressed it for years. You may have ignored it for years. You may have avoided it for years. You may have had

Treveal C.W. Lynch (14:17.594)
you know, talked out of you, you know, people have convinced you that you're not valuable or that you're not worthy of doing anything important in this world. People have robbed you of your voice and your value over the years. All of that may be true, but when you get quiet enough and you settle down long enough, it's within us

I was created by something greater. I was created for something greater.

Treveal C.W. Lynch (14:52.696)
is just an undeniable design of the human heart. I say all that to say that even if you don't pray regularly, I want you to consider that higher power. I want you to consider that creator. I want you to consider that God. I want you to consider that source, that energy. Some call them the infinite wisdom. Whatever you name it, however you frame it, man.

We all got to start somewhere. So I want to meet you where you are. And I just want to invite you into considering that there is something greater from which you've been derived. You have an origin in something greater than what you can see and touch and feel and yeah. So.

Even if you consider it a time of meditation, even if you consider it just a time of musing and just thinking, then that's totally fine. Here's the three things because they're going to still be universal. These are the three things that I want you to consider in your time of prayer. Number one, the first prayer, the prayer of repentance. Okay. And don't let that word throw you off. Here's what it is straight from my notes. This is what you would pray.

These are the prayers that will set you up to, this is prioritizing your progress, but these three will set you up to experience the greatest amount of progress in any given area of your life. Number one, repent. I acknowledge I may not have a correct perspective on the things that concern me.

That's all it is. Repentance is just turning around. Repentance is just changing of your mind. Some people make it big and spooky. All repentance is, if I can say it, all repentance is, is the changing of one's mind. So you can go into prayer and say, listen, I acknowledge I may not have the best perspective on this thing, on my goal, on my dream,

Treveal C.W. Lynch (17:19.132)
my to -do list today on the things that I need to decide upon, on the directions that I need to take today, whatever it is you fill in the blank, but you're going to God, that source, first thing in the morning, first thing, you're getting up and you're going to God before the world starts. I didn't say that earlier, but this is all about getting up maybe 30 minutes or so beforehand before you need to get up and finding a place in your home, quiet, where you can say these three prayers. I should have said that earlier, but I'm saying it

This is about rising a little before the sun gets up. This is about rising a little before everyone else gets up, before the world starts making all of its noise and making your progress a priority. This is how you do this. You know, you are going to be so motivated. You're going to be so inspired by your own small steps, by just being able to set the alarm 30 minutes earlier and by you actually getting out the bed.

and seeing yourself, putting your progress at the top of your priority list. You being able to get up and get out and make a move that you've never made before. You're gonna elicit that feeling I was talking about earlier. You're gonna take in some self -pride. You're gonna take in some self -acknowledgement. You're gonna feel better about yourself. It's gonna be a great payoff for you. And it's gonna feed you and it's gonna fuel

on your path to progress. So the first one is just simply saying, Lord, I don't know. I might have the right perspective. I might not have it. But remember our perspectives. That's what's fueling our progress, our perspective on a thing. That's what's creating the emotion. That's what's creating the feeling that becomes food and fuel. Wrong perspective is going to feed and fuel you not doing anything. The right perspective is going to feed and fuel you doing the right things. Right? So this is about

tuning your perspective so that you can truly truly begin to make progress. Number two, revelation. The revelation prayer. I ask for mercy to receive your right perspective on the things that concern me. The first one was repentance. I acknowledge that I may not have the right one. Let's just get that out the way. I might not have the right one. Number two, revelation.

Treveal C.W. Lynch (19:46.372)
Now I ask for the mercy to receive the right perspective. How should I look at this? How should I think about this? There's always a different way to look at it. There's always a different narrative that you can write. There's always a different story that you can write. You're writing a narrative, you're writing a story, you're telling yourself a story that can always change, that can always upgrade, that can always be improved. You can always innovate it. It can always get better. It can always begin to work for you and not against you.

yourself through what I'm sharing with you, you always have the choice to change. And then lastly, a prayer of resolution. I accept the grace to align my attention, attitude, and actions with my new perspective. See, you started off by saying

I may not have the right one that opens you up to wisdom and to understanding. When you can acknowledge you don't know, it opens you up to new possibilities. It's in our knowing, always knowing something. I know this, I know that. You always know something, that's why you're never growing. Knowing is not growing. Being curious, that's where growth happens. Always being a student of the game is how you always get better at the game.

So number one, repent. I acknowledge I may not have the right perspective. Look for that revelation. I ask for the mercy to receive the right perspective. And then the resolution, resolve in your heart that when you've asked God, then God's gonna answer that prayer. So you can already say yes and amen right now. I accept by faith the grace to align my attention.

my attitude and my actions with my new perspective. Therefore, I'm now prepared. I've now prioritized my progress and now I'm prepared to see and experience progress like I never had before.
