Text:  " The Lord hates six things; in fact, seven are detestable to him: ... a heart that plots wicked schemes ..."  - Proverbs 6:16,17(CSB)

A spirit of self justification is prone to arise should we not intentionally surrender ourselves to the Lordship of Jesus.  Often, circumstances push us to self vindicate, and to lose our subjective sense as it pertains to relationships and the resolution of differences.

In my view, "a heart that plots wicked schemes" is one that plans with ingenuity, personal goals that are essentially outside of God's will.  Personally, I believe that "Corporate unity is the fruit of personal piety." Or, may I state it this way, "as we individually embrace the will of God, the unity of His will is realized corporately."

The plotting of wicked themes is offensive to God because it reflects  an individual or corporate unwillingness to be lead by the Spirit of His Grace.   It is important to remember that the spiritual battle is largely a matter of the heart and I believe that our unity of spirit and practice is more important to God than simply getting a job done.

An acronym that has helped me to maintain my balance in these areas of consideration and leadership is "DREAM."  D.R.E.A.M.

The letter "D" reminds me to "decide and to determine to do God's will."  This involves good communication with God and others.  To develop a culture of prayer is an imperative that would seek the clarity of a heavenly perspective.  Excellence demands more certainty regarding the availability of resources that could impact God's desired course of action.

The letter "R" builds on this as we seek to "route the enemy with prayer."  Too often, we move forward, ahead of God's timing and this limits the blessings of God's intentions towards us.  His way really is the best way and we should do all that we can to work towards a strong consensus regarding His will and way.

The letter "E" encourages us to "Empower those we serve."  Many times, as leaders, we may be tempted to impose our perspective upon others, but it is best to join God's work, in others, as they seek to contribute towards common goals and objectives.  Unity is best achieved as the concerns and interests of all parties are valued and heard.  Diversity of thought and practice, directed by the Spirit of God will bring life to the tapestry of His will.

Perhaps the most practical of my thoughts is reflected in the letter "A" which would have us to "Act Responsibly."  In this, I mean that we should respect consensus.  There is more than one way to "clean the house."  Goals and objectives can be realized using a diversity of resources and actions, and that's okay.

And finally, the letter "M" relates to Mentoring Relationships.  As a strong willed person, it is best for me to subject myself to the counsel and wisdom of those whom I trust.  Proverbs 15:22 aptly states, "Without counsel, plans go awry, But in the multitude of counselors they are established."

So, as much as you can, I would encourage you to align yourself within the certainty of God's revealed will.  Partake of the practical instruction of scripture and make informed, intentional decisions regarding His will.  Get some praying Christians around you and develop a daily practice of prayer and study, and you will be greatly blessed as you cope, in God's strength, with the many challenges of this life.
