What Are Ya Afta?: The Single Question That Unlocks Audacious Living & Purpose 🧭

Tired of knowing only what you don't want? The simple Australian question, "What are you after?," is the daily reset that pulls you into deliberate living.

This self-help playbook overcomes vague wishes by teaching emotional granularity (aiming for mastery or novelty, not just joy) for sharper decisions.

You'll discover the secrets to consistent personal development:

  • The Aim vs. The Climb: Separate ego-driven wins from pursuits aligned with your deepest desired feeling (confidence, freedom).
  • The Universe Ticket: Set your big, audacious plan and trust the universe to "write your ticket."
  • Clarity Over Conditions: Clarity guarantees the ability to choose a better lens (kangaroos over powdered eggs), not a perfect life.

Life is about the quality of questions we ask.

Actionable Takeaways for Intentional Living:

  • The Power of the Question: Your daily compass to shift from autopilot to intentional choice.
  • Avoid the Airport Trap: Declare your big, audacious aim or the universe will send you to the back of the line.
  • Emotional Granularity: Get specific with the desired feeling (novelty, wonder) to align effort with outcome.
  • Chunk Your Aims: Use micro-aims (e.g., "adventure today") to build momentum.
  • Clarity Changes the Lens: Choose your frame to transform inconvenience into texture, not a stop sign (Believe in your circumstances).
  • The Universe Ticket: Write out your destination and be ready to board.

Hit play, set today's aim, and board the flight to your next big goal!

  • How to shift from autopilot to intentional living. The single question that improves daily focus. How to define what you truly want in life. What is emotional granularity in goal setting. How to ask better questions for personal growth. "What does 'What are you after?' mean as a self-help tool?" "How does a daily question change attention and focus?" "What is the universe ticket metaphor for achieving goals?" "Why is emotional granularity better than generic goals?" "How can I stop focusing on what I don't want?"

Jason Shelfer

Good morning.

Jana Shelfer

I'm Jana. I'm Jason. And we are Living Lucky®.

Jason Shelfer

You are too.

Adopting New Language In Australia

Jana Shelfer

Live from Walla, Australia. Good night, mate. Good night, mate. Out mate. Today. If you listen to our last podcast, you heard how we have really started picking up on the vernacular, the communication, and how it's kind of put us outside our daily normal script.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, gotten gotten us out of our conversational comfort zone.

The Power Of “What Are You After”

Jana Shelfer

Yeah, or maybe our robotic comfort zone. Well, I want to just maybe piggyback on that and talk about the phrase, what do you after?

Jason Shelfer

Such a good phrase.

Jana Shelfer

Because it feels like whenever we go to breakfast, we hear, what do you after? What do you after? What are you after this morning?

Jason Shelfer

Whenever we walk into a store, what are you after?

Jana Shelfer

What do you after? And I I don't think I'm quite getting the exit, right?

Jason Shelfer

But I think you're nailing it. What do you after? What are you after? What are you after? And your coach Robin Banks says, What are you after?

Jana Shelfer

What are you after? And when I really sat down and started analyzing this, it's such a good question to ask yourself. What are you what are you after? What it's really saying is, what do you want? Because so many times we don't express what we really want.

Jason Shelfer

How often do like even when we went around asking people what their dream is, how many people said, I don't know. Well, I haven't thought about that in a while.

Jana Shelfer

And to be honest with you, I feel like so many times we almost get mixed signals from our soul. And so we don't really know exactly what we're after.

Turning Wants Into Daily Targets

Jason Shelfer

That's big. That's so big. And we can really just kind of chunk this down. Like if you just got up every morning and said, Hey, Jason, what are you after? Like if I if I asked myself, if I got out of bed and said, What am I after? Yes, I could literally just say, I'm after joy today. You know, it gave it gives you that that target. Okay, so I like something to t to aim for for the day.

Jana Shelfer

But I I challenge you to even get more specific. What kind of joy?

Jason Shelfer

You know, like adventure, something new. Like I can, I can aim for newness or a new connection. Like there's I get to choose a target to aim for and start moving in the direction of. But it gives me that, it almost creates a purposeful, um, purposeful trajectory for my day. Where a lot of times we just get up and we start going through that habitual emotion of our day and do the same old, same old.

Small Joys Versus Big Specifics

Jana Shelfer

Which is kind of what we talked about in the last podcast in in just our daily conversation. Hey, how are you doing this morning? I'm good. Thanks. How are you?

Jason Shelfer

Yeah.

Jana Shelfer

Fine.

Jason Shelfer

Have a good day. How often do we find ourselves in that habitual state of being where it's just the same old, same old? And then at the end of the year, we're going, why is why is my life so much sameness and so much ho hum instead of the fun that I hoped I would get out of life? Or the excitement.

Jana Shelfer

Even though the we're talking about this question, I still don't know if I can answer that. When I ask myself, Jana, what are you after? What are you really after?

Jason Shelfer

I don't I th I think we don't have to get big. We don't have to get massive with it.

Jana Shelfer

You got really big with joy. I mean, that's almost so big. Well, I feel like we need to chunk that down into maybe a hundred more questions of what are you after?

Jason Shelfer

See, I don't really. But see, for me, see, see there, and there's a difference in definition. So for me, joy doesn't have to be big. Like I can I can pick joy just as a very small thing. And that's like for in the gr when we do our gratitude journals, I find little micro doses of joy in that.

The Mountain You Keep Climbing

Jana Shelfer

Yeah. And uh see, I asked myself, what am I after? I I don't know if I can I mean, I know that once I answer that question, my stars will align even more. But I asked myself, you know, why have I been training like a mad woman for the last year?

Jason Shelfer

Hardcore.

Jana Shelfer

And putting other things on the back burner. Like, what is it? What what is it really that I'm after? Is it winning? Is it knowing that I can? Is it being the best? Is it showing up for myself, some sort of discipline?

Jason Shelfer

Is it just another mountain in this ridge of mountains that you like to climb? Like it's uh like I feel like you you will continually make these these mountains that you will figure out a way to climb, whether it's a a physical mountain or whether it's a just a goal-style mountain that you will say, okay, this is my next thing that I will conquer, and I'm going to figure out a way to summit this, and we're gonna figure it out.

Jana Shelfer

But is it am I after a feeling? Am I after some pathway to monetization? Am I after what am I after?

Jason Shelfer

There there's the question. What are you after?

Jana Shelfer

I think that's why it's an important question because it's so much easier to say we have some eggs.

Ask Better Questions, Get Better Paths

Jason Shelfer

Maybe we don't have to answer the question. Maybe it's we have to ask the question. And maybe that's something where we're not asking the question, we're just getting up and doing. But if we ask our question, our subconscious will start to look for that answer. Like we talk about this uh kind of loosely throughout several of these podcasts. When we've almost done 500 podcasts, and throughout the the series, we've said a lot of times that life is about the quality of questions that we ask. And this is one of those quality questions. I mean, it can be a simple question.

Jana Shelfer

I think in life, so many times it's easy to answer what I'm not after.

Jason Shelfer

Right. And it's easy to find what we're not looking for.

Jana Shelfer

And we've talked about this in using the analogy of going to the airport. You know, you go up to the counter and you don't they say, Where are you flying today? Well, you don't say, Well, I know where I don't want to go.

Jason Shelfer

You're like, give me some choices. And they're like, Well, do you want to go to Hawaii? No, I don't want to go there. Well, do you want to go to Tifton, Georgia? No, I don't want to go there. Like, like somebody can keep giving you a list of choices, and you're like, you you can tell them where you don't want to go. Well, you need to know where you have to.

Jana Shelfer

Everyone's gonna get antsy in line. Like, hey, you dude, when you go to the back of the line until you figure it out, right?

Universe Ticket Metaphor And Specificity

Jason Shelfer

And what is the universe telling you that? Is the universe telling you right now, hey, go to the back of the line until you know where you want to go? And then you come here, come back to me with your big ass, audacious what are you after? You tell me what you want, and then let's go there.

Jana Shelfer

Oh my god.

Jason Shelfer

What if the universe is just waiting on your big, big ass, audacious plan and you write it out, you you plan it out and say, hey universe, take me here. And then the universe said, Here's your ticket, baby, let's go.

Jana Shelfer

Okay, so I guess my question is how specific do we need to be? Because I would challenge you and say that joy, I I think it needs to be more specific. I think you I think so.

Jason Shelfer

What if it needs to be more specific for you? Because if for me and I'm getting the experience that I I'm I'm looking for, yeah, is that okay for me?

Jana Shelfer

Here we go, having our therapy session on our podcast.

Jason Shelfer

But I will accept your challenge because what if I just need to get a little bit more audacious with my what am I after? Like what if what if I'm limiting myself by not seeking that just amazement that I that is available for me?

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

That's I think that's maybe the question that we're asking, right?

Jana Shelfer

Well, I mean, yeah, because I I look at this, even the ski thing specifically. I mean, why why are we doing this? Yeah, it is fun for us, so there's your joy, I guess. Well, if we get to travel, there's your joy.

Choosing Fun Amid Messy Reality

Jason Shelfer

Now, here's the thing it's fun, but also our we're looking, we're finding the fun in it because if someone was to walk into our hotel room right now, you would it would look like something blew up in here that there's not really enough room to move around. I mean, this is not a penthouse suite. We're not staying in the most luxury and there are skis everywhere because we don't have like an equipment shed to put everything in and we're loading things in and out, but we're having a blast.

Jana Shelfer

So that's a choice. So that's a choice because we're literally in the middle of nowhere, right?

Jason Shelfer

And we're but we're also choosing the the best parts of this to see.

Jana Shelfer

Like we're choosing to see the fun in it like when we go instead of choosing to see the hardships when we go to the mess hall to have our powdered eggs, we're like, oh wait, there's a kangaroo in the distance.

Jason Shelfer

What a beautiful breakfast.

Jana Shelfer

Listen to those birds. Yes.

Jason Shelfer

The sounds here are incredible.

Close And Call To Action

Jana Shelfer

Okay, don't change the subject, Chauffeur. What are you after? The question today to ask yourself is what are you after?

Jason Shelfer

What are you after? And get big and audacious with it and let the universe write your ticket.

Jana Shelfer

I love that. I love that. I have some soul searching to do right now. What am I really after? Have a great day. Thanks for joining us.
