Stop Being "Realistic" and Start Living Lucky® "Let’s be realistic" sounds like sound advice, but in this episode of the Living Lucky® Podcast, Jason and Jana Banana expose it as a sneaky emergency brake on your potential. If you’ve been keeping your goals "practical" to avoid disappointment, you aren't being wise—you're being programmed. We dive deep into why your current "reality" is often just a collection of limiting beliefs borrowed from parents, teachers, and society.

Whether it’s your bank account, your relationships, or your health, if you want a new outcome, you have to stop negotiating against yourself. We share the raw, behind-the-scenes story of how Jana went from a novice to a World Champion in 13 months—even when the "realistic" voice in the room was whispering for her to play it safe.

In This Episode:

  • Audit Your Vocabulary: Why the phrase "be realistic" is a red flag for a fixed mindset.
  • Unpack Early Programming: How to use the question "According to whom?" to dismantle childhood scripts.
  • Adopt a 10x Lens: Why setting audacious goals is the only way to expose the "ceilings" you’ve mistaken for floors.
  • The 4-Minute Transformation: How to use daily journaling to align your identity with your future self.

Living Lucky® Nuggets:

  • Reality is a Choice: You don't see the world as it is; you see it as you are. Shift your perspective, shift your results.
  • The "Available" Trap: Success is available to anyone, but your subconscious might be saying "not for me." It's time to unsubscribe from that story.
  • Raise the Expectation: You don’t get what you want; you get what you expect. If you expect friction, you'll find it.
  • Infinite Abundance: The external world lives small. Your soul was built for infinite growth, learning, and expansion.

Creating A Life You Crave

Jana Shelfer

Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning, I'm Jana. I'm Jason. And we are Living Lucky®.

Jason Shelfer

You are too.

Jana Shelfer

Jason was having a conversation yesterday with a friend of his.

Jason Shelfer

And my friend says, Oh, let's be realistic.

Jana Shelfer

What in the heck is realistic anyway?

Jason Shelfer

So when people say let's be realistic, it it sets off this emotional trigger in me. Because the moment we let go of quote unquote being realistic, our lives changed.

Jana Shelfer

Because we are creating our reality. So Janaa and Jason's reality is very different than other people's reality. So when they say, well, let's be realistic, well, in my reality, this is totally possible.

Why “Be Realistic” Stings

Jason Shelfer

I I I don't subscribe to your realistic. I used to, and that kept me at the status quo and at average and and all this.

Jana Shelfer

Like and I highly encourage you subscribe to mine.

Jason Shelfer

Right? Like, and and maybe even see if you can outdo mine because people are coming up to me all the time going, what are you doing? What the heck have y'all got going on over there? Like you guys are out of your minds.

Jana Shelfer

Y'all are doing it.

Jason Shelfer

Right.

Jana Shelfer

I ask your life looks out of control, like crazy. I ask anyone that is listening to this right now, ask yourself, what is my realistic? When I say, okay, well, let's get realistic here, because I know we've all used that in a sentence. We've all used it. Whether it in fact, I will be completely transparent. When I set goals for how much money I want to bring in in a year or even a month or even a week, I often say to Jason, let's get realistic. And Jason is like, he looks at me like, Jamma, this is totally realistic.

Jason Shelfer

Like, let's let's 10x that.

Jana Shelfer

And yeah, you're often speaking in 10x terms. And I'm like, come on, Jason, let's just let's just bring it down to earth. Let's I do. I am totally bringing it down to earth.

Jason Shelfer

If somebody's doing it, why I mean, let me just tell you that you get what you expect. Yes.

Jana Shelfer

And that's the thing is totally get what you expect. So why not raise our standards on this?

Jason Shelfer

If it's out there, first of all, if it's out there, it's available. Why not us? The other thing is, even if it's not out there right now, it's still available. We just are are limiting ourselves by what we say is realistic.

Where Realistic Gets Programmed

Jana Shelfer

You need to send an email to your friend and say, Did you have a dream last night about what realistic is?

Jason Shelfer

Well, we I I always continue these conversations because every client that I've ever had, at some point, they say, Oh, come on, let's be realistic. And then we just have to unpack that a little bit because what happens is we get programmed in life to what realistic is. To define what realism is and what realistic is by what we see and by what we what we're ex what we expect.

Jana Shelfer

And not only what we see, a lot of times it was programmed when we were very, very young by our parents. So I ask when they give you the definition of realistic, I would then ask according to whom.

Jason Shelfer

Right. Exactly. And sometimes it goes to their parents, goes to society. It comes back to all these different things. And then it says, well, I don't think I can.

Jana Shelfer

Or I don't think no, I I seriously, I think that is such, I mean, I'm having an aha moment. It comes back to the for your friends.

Jason Shelfer

The basic fundamental limiting beliefs. I mean, that's that's where it's that's where it will all come back to. It's available, but not for me. I'm not enough, you know, all these little fundamental limiting beliefs. And the truth is, it is available.

Jana Shelfer

We're limited by our own imagination and and our own core innovation, our own core programming, our own core beliefs. And if this is you, if you're listening to this right now, going, oh my gosh, and it could be in any area of your life. Maybe it is, oh gosh, I could never learn that.

Jason Shelfer

Right? I could never go from last place to world champion in 13 months.

From Doubt To World Champion

Jana Shelfer

I could never be realistic. I could never be pretty enough. I could never maybe be in a relationship with someone. I it's all it like we all have our area of. Well, I mean, transparency.

Jason Shelfer

When you got out of the water in uh September of 2024, after your first competition at water skiing, my fur and said I'm gonna be world champion.

Jana Shelfer

Oh yeah.

Jason Shelfer

My first my first thought was let's be realistic. I didn't say it out loud. But that I mean, and I'm and I hate the words. I hate the words, let's be realistic. Yeah. But the thought in my head was let's be realistic. I just didn't voice them. Oh. So I know, I know this is what happens. But that that's the old programming coming out. So I said, I stopped that thought. And I said, okay, well, stop that thought.

Jana Shelfer

No, I wouldn't.

Jason Shelfer

Because if world champions is available, yes, it's available for anyone. How do we get there? And then when I went through our our whole process of of our our four-minute transformation, and I said, okay, well, what do I how do I want to what do I want to experience here? Yes, we want to experience a world championship. And trap. How do we want to grow?

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

How do we contribute? Yes. And then how lucky are we? And I we went through that every every day, and we did the work in that in our journals. Yes. And we did it in 13 months. So I know there's a way through all this and to get whatever we want in life.

Jana Shelfer

Oh my gosh. I'm so glad I did not see your facial expressions, or I did not, I'm so glad you did not voice your doubt.

Jason Shelfer

Well, I'm so glad I want to be your Spartan cheerleader.

Jana Shelfer

Like because I know I have felt this in other areas of my life. I know that when I started telling people I'm gonna be an international speaker, I know that some people were like, Okay, Janaet, good for you. Well, and you go do that.

Jason Shelfer

So we'll the crowd will often say, Who do you think you are? And we'll hear that voice in ourselves. You know, let's be realistic.

Jana Shelfer

I know I can't. Who do you think you are? Sometimes I still feel it from them sometimes.

Jason Shelfer

And we have that imposter syndrome in ourselves.

Jana Shelfer

I know exactly who are you think you are? I'm a world champion.

Jason Shelfer

Let's be realistic. You know, don't be realistic.

Jana Shelfer

I'm a billionaire.

Jason Shelfer

Set those wildly audacious goals.

Jana Shelfer

Thank you. Uh you know what? I really feel like we've gotten our point across. Set those wildly audacious goals. Uh are we calling them wags now? Let's call are we calling them wads, wildly audacious dreams? What are we what are we calling them?

Jason Shelfer

Let's call them super wildly wildly audacious goals that way. I can call them swags because I'm a swag hag.

Jana Shelfer

Okay, I'm a swag hag too. Set your wildly audacious goal.

Jason Shelfer

Super wildly audacious goal.

Audacious Goals And Closing Challenge

Jana Shelfer

Super wildly audacious goal, and then believe it. It is freaking that simple. And when somebody says, well, let's be realistic, in my world, that is totally doable because I've not only done it once, I have done it time and time and time again, and watch me do it again.

Jason Shelfer

That's right. Hold my beer and watch. Bitch.

Jana Shelfer

Thank you.

Jason Shelfer

Oh, I didn't need that last B, but uh you th so if you look at it through our through just through your lens, yes, you were paralyzed at 15.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

You went and got some a cup of gold medal, a bronze medal, you were in the paralympic paralympics three different times.

Jana Shelfer

Okay, we don't need to like we don't have to go through your resume. Yes, we don't need to go through my life story.

Jason Shelfer

We just keep we keep showing it, and we're doing it through the four-minute transformation.

Jana Shelfer

Believe it, believe in yourself, and seriously, the reason that people's souls start dying is because they start listening to the external world, and the external world is living small, and this world is full of infinite possibilities, infinite abundance, infinite dreams and experiences and growth and learning, expanding, evolving. Everything that Jason has said do you want it? Do you want it? Step into it, become it.

Jason Shelfer

It's out there and it's ready for you.

Jana Shelfer

It is waiting for you.

Jason Shelfer

And we have to just stop changing our definition of what reality is. Because what we do is we keep limiting our expectation of reality. That is limiting our expectation of ourselves, and it also limits what is available to us because we only get what we expect.

Jana Shelfer

And that is me being realistic.

Jason Shelfer

Amen.

Jana Shelfer
