Luck looks like a random lightning strike from the outside—but from the inside, it is an undeniable, learnable pattern.

Most people wander through their lives trapped inside a passive survival loop. They treat their reality like a weather pattern they are forced to endure, waiting around for a "lucky break" while living on high alert for the next inevitable crisis. But when you allow a single bad moment—what Mike Tyson famously called getting "punched in the face"—to dictate your narrative, you immediately flip your internal focus. You move from offensive creation mode to defensive survival, scanning every room for threats instead of openings, and quietly creating the very doom loop you claim to hate.

In this foundational, high-vibrational episode of the Living Lucky® Podcast, Jana and Jason dismantle the myth of accidental success. They map out the precise behavioral mechanics that make luck predictable: how beliefs dictate thoughts, thoughts drive emotional frequency, feelings fuel actions, and actions circle back to prove what you believed in the first place. Jana revisits the defining 1990 turning point that birthed the Living Lucky® movement—recounting her 15-year-old self in a rehab hospital lobby after a life-altering spinal cord injury, a quadriplegic stranger asking her to scratch his nose, and the four-word journal query that redirected her entire life trajectory: "How lucky am I?"

Inside:

  • The Four-Stage Luck Engine: The exact neurological feedback loop—Belief → Thought → Emotion → Action—that creates compounding real-world momentum.
  • Getting Through vs. Getting From: The critical energy shift required to stop executing defensive survival and start extracting performance value from every single day.
  • The Manifestation Latency Period: Why your current bank account, health baseline, and relationships are simply physical delay-responses to decisions you made years ago.
  • Main Character vs. Author Energy: Why stepping into "main character energy" isn't enough, and how to claim the author's pen to co-create your next chapter with Source.
  • The 55-Year-Old Midlife Wake-Up: How to reclaim your agency and build your own dream even after decades of overfunctioning for everyone else.

Stop sitting in the passenger seat of a bus you didn't choose to ride. If you are ready to catch the doom loop before it becomes your identity, take the steering wheel back, and start engineering your own luck on purpose, hit play now.

NUGGETS

  • Luck is a trainable performance skill. People who seem naturally lucky have simply hardcoded an upward loop of belief, emotion, and decisive action.
  • Your current reality is a delayed echo of past choices. What you are experiencing today—whether financial lack or total abundance—is the latency result of decisions made years ago.
  • Defensive living liquidates your creative potential. The moment you switch from "getting from the day" to "getting through the day," your brain stops looking for opportunities and starts scanning for danger.
  • You are not just the main character; you are the author. Being the main character still leaves you subject to someone else's script; claiming author energy lets you co-create the storyline.
  • Accountability is the ultimate access point to power. Blaming external circumstances keeps you helpless, but owning your choices hands you the steering wheel to rewrite your future.

Questions:

Is luck random, or can it be systematically generated? Luck is not random; it is a systematic, repeatable behavioral pattern. In mindset coaching, "luck" is generated when an individual holds an expansive core belief that drives positive thoughts, generates high-vibrational emotional states, and prompts decisive risk-taking. These actions yield favorable real-world results, which circle back to reinforce the original belief, creating an undeniable upward momentum loop.

What is the "manifestation latency period" in personal growth? The manifestation latency period is the time gap between an individual's internal shift in beliefs, choices, and actions, and the tangible physical appearance of those results in their external environment. Because past habits and decisions take time to clear through real-world systems, present circumstances (such as financial status or health) often reflect historical programming rather than current mindset efforts.

How does asking "How lucky am I?" shift human focus during a personal crisis? Asking "How lucky am I?" serves as an immediate cognitive pattern interrupt. When facing adversity, the brain's default evolutionary reflex is to scan for loss and threat. Posing a targeted, solution-oriented question forces the Reticular Activating System (RAS) to bypass perceived limitations and search the immediate environment for existing assets, gratitude anchors, and uncompromised capabilities.

  • Is Luck Random? The audience poll that proves everyone wants more Jana and Jason kick off the studio session by asking why some people seem naturally blessed while others suffer. Discover why luck is an engineered skill rather than an accidental lightning strike.
  • The Four-Stage Momentum Loop: Belief → Thought → Emotion → Action A clinical breakdown of the Living Lucky® engine. Learn how aligned actions produce real-world data that circles back to lock your core beliefs into an upward success spiral.
  • The Mike Tyson Punch: What happens when reality hits your game plan Analyzing what occurs when an unexpected setback strikes your trajectory. Discover how catching a negative thought early prevents a single bad moment from turning into your permanent identity.
  • Agency & Accountability: Stop blaming the universe and grab the steering wheel Jason and Jana dissect John and Missy Butcher's famous life coaching directive. Discover why taking total responsibility for your current location gives you absolute power to change coordinates.
  • Main Character vs. Author Energy: Who is actually writing your script? Moving beyond basic pop-psychology tropes. Jason unveils his latest book concept on why playing the "main character" still leaves you helpless unless you claim the author's pen to co-create with Source.
  • The 1990 Rehab Lobby Encounter: The quadriplegic who changed Jana's life Jana shares the raw, emotional origin story of her spinal cord injury at age 15. Learn how scratching a stranger's nose led to the four-word journal prompt that launched a world-champion career.

Is Luck Random Or Built?

Jana Shelfer

Do you believe luck happens randomly?

Jason Shelfer

We're about to blow your mind.

Living Lucky And Why It Matters

Jana Shelfer

I'm Jana. I'm Jason. And we are Living Lucky®. You are too. If you asked an audience the question, which we speak every week, and we always ask, do you wish that you could have more luck in your life? How many hands go up?

Jason Shelfer

All the hands go up.

Jana Shelfer

Every single hand are like, oh, I wish that I had more luck. Because some people, luck just turns to color. Some guys have all the pain. I had to like get your key for a second.

Jason Shelfer

Well, don't reach for my keys because I'll change them in a heartbeat.

Jana Shelfer

But it's true. Some people just are naturally lucky.

Jason Shelfer

It's a skill that they've built. And whether they know it or not, it's something that they have found the right pattern to live in.

Jana Shelfer

It starts with a belief.

Jason Shelfer

Yes.

Jana Shelfer

Then it's followed by thoughts. It is anchored by feelings.

Jason Shelfer

Yes, 100%.

Jana Shelfer

And then it is lifted off with actions.

Jason Shelfer

Yes, and it's proven by those actions, which then go back and reinforce those beliefs. So, and then that just reinforces that pattern. And so they they keep living in that, and that keeps producing these lucky opportunities and

Belief To Action Creates Momentum

Jason Shelfer

results.

Jana Shelfer

These lucky moments. And now here's the thing is that once people start living into the upward spiral, because most people, let's face it, they are in the downward spiral, they are in survival mode. They are not thriving at life. But once you start getting a little taste of that thriving mode, of that Living Lucky®, you start getting momentum. And when you do, your beliefs start to get a little more confident, your thoughts start to live even further into it, your feelings start to get into a higher vibration, and then you start taking action, you start taking more risks on yourself.

Jason Shelfer

You start taking that different action. And that's the thing is an object in motion tends to stay in motion in the direction it's going in, unless it's acted on by an opposite um force, right? And that's when so when Mike Tyson says everything's going well and everything has a plan.

Jana Shelfer

Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

Jason Shelfer

And so that's the opposite force. Right? And then so then we get a different I've been punched in the face a few times. Then we get a different thought and feeling in that moment. And it's catching that thought and feeling and saying, Okay, is this how the rest of the day goes? Is this how the rest of my life goes, or was this a moment?

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

But what happens is we we grab hold of it, we grab hold of that moment and say, This is how life is now.

unknown

Yeah.

Jason Shelfer

And then we carry it.

Jana Shelfer

Not only do we carry it, sometimes it becomes intertwined into our DNA of who we are.

Jason Shelfer

So true.

Jana Shelfer

This is I'm trauma.

Jason Shelfer

And so now think about that and think about the the trajectory and the momentum. So now we've taken this success forward momentum that we work on this upward trajectory, and we've now started going in this doom loop downward. And we start looking for where is the next punch in the face coming from? And that's what news does to us.

Jana Shelfer

Yeah, you start living on the defensive. Like, oh, oh, oh, and that's a different energy.

Jason Shelfer

And you start showing up differently in every situation because now you're not looking for opportunities, you're looking for survival.

Jana Shelfer

You're looking to protect yourself. Oh gosh. Uh-oh.

Jason Shelfer

I've just got to I've got to get through the day, not get from the day.

Jana Shelfer

Life's out to get me. Oh, poor me.

Jason Shelfer

There's a whole different feeling in getting through the day and getting from the day.

Escaping The Doom Loop Mindset

Jana Shelfer

You know, in our old podcast intro and outro, we would say stop the doom loop of despair and start living in an upwards success cycle or spiral, however you want to say it. And it really is that easy.

Jason Shelfer

Some people don't understand that. Um if you get the visual of it, it makes perfect sense because we've rec we've been in both, you know.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, have we?

Jason Shelfer

You know, it just so happens that once we've started Living Lucky® and fully embodying it, yes, it's it's easy to stop those slips and slides towards the Doom Loop.

Jana Shelfer

The slips and slides.

Jason Shelfer

Because you you can't.

Jana Shelfer

When you say slips and slides, I'm like, oh, remember that big old banana thing we used to put water on and that old game shoots and ladders when we were kids.

Jason Shelfer

You don't like going down the the shoot of the the the shooting.

Jana Shelfer

It's more fun going up though.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah.

Jana Shelfer

For most people.

Jason Shelfer

I'm winning. Like Charlie Sheen. That's horrible.

Jana Shelfer

No, but but there was something to that.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah.

Jana Shelfer

When when you do have this feeling and belief that you are winning, you start winning more. You attract experiences where you win. It's almost like a communication with the universe. This is how I like to think. It's communication with anything you're going against. We're constantly manifesting. People don't quite understand that. But I'm here to tell you, we are constantly manifesting, and we are either manifesting what we want, or we are manifesting our deepest fears.

Jason Shelfer

Everything you have right now is a result of what you've picked and what you've decided decisions way back when are what have shown up for you right now.

Jana Shelfer

That is such a good point. Everything you are experiencing right now is something that you created, and sometimes you're like, no, I did not create this. I did not create this, Janna and Jason. However, if you look back, sometimes there's a latency period and it may take years to actually come to fruition. But everything that you are experiencing in your life, whether it is the good and happy vibrations, love, abundance, just joy, or if it's living in lack. I mean, maybe your bank account is constantly Yeah.

Jason Shelfer

Paycheck to paycheck or just below that.

Jana Shelfer

Or in the in the red. Right. That's something that you created before you run out of paycheck. You created years ago. It may have even been instilled in your programming when you were a child. So everything that we are doing, we have created long ago in our past.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah. And it's easy to look back. Like if we look back and examine it, because we've taken so much time to look back and examine how how did we get here? Like what is the what is the path? What are the footsteps that got us right here?

Manifestation Meets Personal Accountability

Jana Shelfer

Here's the thing. So when we speak, often we talk about luck. And I'll even ask the audience, when was the last time you felt lucky? What were your thoughts about that? What were your feelings? You know, people are like, oh, I thought I was about to have a pleasurable moment. That's when I thought I was gonna be lucky.

Jason Shelfer

We're not in Vegas, sir.

Jana Shelfer

Like we're not talking about sex, but sometimes we are. It's a choice. People are under the misconception that luck is just a random thing, but there's actually science behind all of this. And we attract the experiences that match with our frequency, our vibration, our thoughts, feelings, actions, energy.

Jason Shelfer

Expectations.

Jana Shelfer

We attract those the right people to help us learn our spiritual curriculum. That's a hard thing to understand if you're not used to the lingo.

Jason Shelfer

And if you're if you're more comfortable blaming someone else for everything in your life.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

And and not taking accountability accountability and agency over yourself. We all have agency. And we all The thing is when you take the agency, when you say, I get to create my luck, I get to I get to create whatever I want in life, it gives you so much power. Oh, I know like you quit, you get to take the steering wheel of whatever car you're driving and say, I go where I want to go.

Jana Shelfer

You know, that's key. We should repeat what you just said because I remember when we were working with Missy and John and John Butcher. Is that correct? Okay. Uh John and Missy Butcher. I always say John's name first.

Jason Shelfer

When we were working with them, we know Missy's running that show.

Jana Shelfer

I remember John saying, take the steering wheel of the bus. You're not just a passenger in the bus, just going wherever the bus driver decides. You are taking the wheel of your own life. And that really resonated with me at the time. At the time it hit hard. It was like, whoa, why didn't I ever realize it?

Jason Shelfer

It hits for me because I think of a lot of things with my metaphorical mind, and I I think of what like road trips.

Take The Wheel Of Your Life

Jana Shelfer

Yeah.

Jason Shelfer

And right now I'm playing with this idea of main character energy.

unknown

Oh.

Jason Shelfer

For like I'm I'm thinking I'm writing another book and I'm thinking about main characters.

Jana Shelfer

Another book. Did you just hear him? I'm writing another book.

Jason Shelfer

Well, I'm thinking about main character energy, but I'm also thinking that even as a main character, someone else is writing the book. So if if I can now take in my life the author's energy.

Jana Shelfer

So you're being the artist and the art. Yes.

Jason Shelfer

So good. That just gave me goosebumps.

Jana Shelfer

Because I put it in my journal.

Jason Shelfer

But right, see? You're and this is what I'm talking about. This is why I love our our conversations, our marriage, all this. It's having that idea of I can stop my thoughts at being main character of my life. Or I can say, Is that where I'm stopping? Or do I need to go and say, No, I am the author of my life. I create whatever comes next.

Jana Shelfer

I might even challenge that thought though, because I feel I'm not the sole author.

Jason Shelfer

We're co-creating.

Jana Shelfer

I feel we are co-creating.

Jason Shelfer

100%. And that's kind of where source. That's where I'm at with this whole thought process. I'm trying to figure out how to dial all that in.

Jana Shelfer

And I feel like source to me is something that is so big and miraculous. The universe, mother nature, God, it's whatever language you personally use, we almost plug into it.

Jason Shelfer

Because there are people out there right now going, well, what about the other things that just do happen in life? What about those smacks in the face where I'm trying to create my luck? Those like we are co-creating not only with source, but with each other.

Jana Shelfer

And I also feel that those are designed to be placed in our life at strategic times to help us grow, understand, and maybe evolve our perspective.

Jason Shelfer

It's it goes back to when you're talking about the spiritual curriculum.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

Like we and they're all placed in our timeline at the right time.

Jana Shelfer

Yeah.

Jason Shelfer

For and that's uh goes into all these little pieces of perfection. But when we don't take that agency, when we think, oh, luck is just happenstance, then we take the opportunity to learn that lesson out of it.

Jana Shelfer

I will say it's been in my darkest times that I realize this the most. So I feel like what you're saying is that circumstances are going to happen. And I'm a prime example of that. I mean, my whole that's why Living Lucky started.

Jason Shelfer

Right?

The Question That Changed Everything

Jana Shelfer

Was back in 1990? 1990. I was 15 years old. I was having a grand year. It was a coming of age year for me. I was the feature baton twirler, I was discovering boys, playing basketball, playing at on the varsity team at 15. I mean, it just was a really fun time for me. And then on May 23rd of 1990, which was the very last day of school, I was the passenger in a car accident. Paralyzed immediately from the chest down, and I was flown to a rehab hospital in Colorado. And while I was there, three, four days in, I was waiting for my physical therapist to come. And I was feeling sorry for myself. Like, oh my gosh, this is the worst thing that could possibly happen to me.

Jason Shelfer

You lost it all.

Jana Shelfer

And a quadriplegic who was sitting in the lobby asked me if I could scratch his nose for him. And when he was like, Oh my god, my nose can't move anything but neck, right? We've all had that feeling where oh my god, my nose, oh, I can't quite get to it. And anyway, I thought it was disgusting and gross. I'm 15.

Jason Shelfer

And yet at the same time, but you can't pick your friend's nose.

Jana Shelfer

So I helped the guy out and I scratched his nose for him. And he said to me, You have no idea how lucky you are.

Jason Shelfer

And at the time, it kind of rubbed me the wrong way because I was You didn't have that immediate shift of oh, I was like, the white birds land on your shoulder.

Jana Shelfer

Are you delusional? Do you know who I am and what I have just lost? Yeah. And here I was dealing with everything I had lost. But that night, it when I went to bed, instead of crying myself to sleep, which I often did when the nurses would leave and my parents were gone, I would just cry.

Jason Shelfer

Took the brave mask off?

Jana Shelfer

I took out my journal and I just wrote, How lucky am I? And so it all really started with that question. So I guess, you know, once I started making that decision and making the list, you know, I have my parents, I have my personality, I have these great.

Jason Shelfer

Well, it changed your fo So this goes exactly back to the trajectory, the success cycle and the doom loop. Because it changed your focus because you can't keep steering in a direction that you're not focused in.

Jana Shelfer

And I think one one advantage I had is that I was so young. I was so young and it it was easy for me to I had joy inside me already. So it was easy for me to start looking at what I can do instead of what I can't do, and to look at solutions instead of problems, to look at what I have instead of what I had lost. I mean, it was just almost the opposite. You it was almost like the road divided. The road divides in in the woods, and though I shall not travel both, I don't remember the poem.

Jason Shelfer

You usually do, which is really which is really funny. You're so good at reciting those. But and I get it because the divide was so recent that all the assets were on both sides of the road. So you could see what previously you had listed as lost, and then you could also see what was still available.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Midlife Wake Up And Choosing Yourself

Jason Shelfer

So on that same note, on that same note, a 55-year-old woman emailed me yesterday or the day before.

Jana Shelfer

What are you stepping out on me? You like you like older women now?

Jason Shelfer

Older women emailing me because I'm just so hot.

Jana Shelfer

That is true.

Jason Shelfer

She emailed me because she's she's in that position in life where she's she's reflecting back, you know? She she's worked so much to provide for her family, and she's at that point where she's she feels like she's wasted the time.

Jana Shelfer

Like drunk?

Jason Shelfer

No. She's wasted the previous years of her life and she's ready for a change.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, okay. Yes.

Jason Shelfer

But in the reflection she's going through, I've I've put everyone else first. Oh, I've made all my my family happy. I haven't followed my dreams. I've worked seven days a week.

Jana Shelfer

She's waiting for her turn.

Jason Shelfer

All the all these things where she didn't feel like she was the author of her life.

Jana Shelfer

Like she's She's been living in other people's dreams. Yes. Instead of living her own dream.

Jason Shelfer

So this awareness is hitting her, kind of like the question, how lucky am I in 1990 for you? Where now she has an opportunity to start taking this new direction. Okay. Like steer starting steering her own car.

Jana Shelfer

Right. You know, which we've talked about.

Jason Shelfer

Moving moving in this new Living Lucky® direction of momentum and success.

Jana Shelfer

Instead of being the passenger. Yes. You know, I know Wayne Dyer used to say, don't just be a piece of driftwood, just dri you know, drifting down the river. Pick a direction, be intentional. Be the river. Right? Be the river.

Jason Shelfer

Be the river.

Jana Shelfer

So I think what you're really saying is it comes down to a choice. We all have a choice. We all have agency.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah. We're either choosing to read the book, choosing not to read the book. We're choosing to have the conversation, choosing not to have the conversation.

Jana Shelfer

Choosing to live the dream, choosing not to live the dream.

Jason Shelfer

Choosing to show up fully, choosing to hide portions of ourselves.

Jana Shelfer

It's almost like every moment of our life is a tiny little negotiation. Right. And when you really stop and and analyze it, every little microsecond, we're constantly evaluating, maybe with even ourselves, of what value is more important. You know, for like the woman that emailed you, up until now, it was her kids and making sure that they had everything that they needed. That was the most important thing to her. But now that they have grown their wings and can fend for themselves, yeah, it's okay. Now it's my turn.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah. And and it's I think we can always look at how can I make sure I'm serving from a full cup, even when we have our families, you know? So there's a way to there's a way to examine this where like even in a household that's full and with new babies, yes, that we can say, how can I live lucky? How can I be Living Lucky® and my children be Living Lucky® at the same time? So that we are all we don't end up at a point 55 years later or 27 years later like you're wasted where we feel like we've we've missed out on a portion of us so because we were giving everything to someone else.

Jana Shelfer

Yes. Oh, that's that is being very aware, I believe.

Jason Shelfer

And I think that's where it comes down to it.

Jana Shelfer

And there is a happy medium in there somewhere.

Jason Shelfer

Because everything is available to us all the time. And I think that's one of the things that you learned back in 1990 was I was only looking at what I was what was lost until I became aware of, no, this is what I have, and what can I build from here?

Jana Shelfer

It was a gift. It was a gift in changing my shifting my perspective mentality at that time. And I look back and it was such a micro moment, and yet it has steered the trajectory of my life.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah. I mean, world championships, Olympic, Paralympic Games, gold medals, hall of fame. Hello.

Jana Shelfer

Keep them going.

Jason Shelfer

Husband, husband of the year. I haven't won husband of the year yet. I don't know if it's coming.

Jana Shelfer

I should make that award for you. I tell you all the time. I know. I feel I tell you that you are the jackpot of life. Which is why I I feel like that is the reason that I am Living Lucky® every day is because I get to spend it with you. That is my highest value.

Jason Shelfer

I wake up every morning and I just think, gosh, how lucky am I? The question that started it all, and I just I wake up and that's the first thought on my mind every morning.

Jana Shelfer

Ah. So I guess we're making this sound a little easier than it is because there is a complexity to Living Lucky®. There are steps, there are principles. However, when you start getting the hang of it and you start practicing, like you said, these little mindset shifts.

Jason Shelfer

And the more, and I'm not a dancer, but the more you do it, the the easier the steps get. Yes. And then it just becomes the way you move through life.
