John introduces himself as an eyewitness of the Word of Life (Jesus) and proclaims what he knows to be true about Him. False teachings about the true nature of Jesus had crept into the church. John makes crystal clear the true nature of God and those who belong to him is light, not darkness; truth, not falsehood. We cannot claim to be vitally connected with God and, at the same time, ignore or trivialize our sin. And so we must deal with sin by acknowledging it (truth) and receiving the grace and forgiveness of Jesus so that we can remain in close fellowship with him (walking in the light) and others in God’s family.
