All too often, motivation of desirable actions and behaviors for individuals at home and in the workplace, centers around "carrots and sticks". 
Rewards and loss aversion seem to prevail  as the primary sources of motivation to get us to do what others want us to do.
This lesson comes from the work of Daniel Pink in his book Drive  where he dives deeper into the science of motivation.
The primary motivators for behaviors and actions that require intellectual activity, emotional connection and relationship management are purpose, autonomy and mastery.
