St. Patrick’s Day hits different depending on where you live, who you’re with, and whether you’re celebrating on a Tuesday or turning the whole weekend into a mission. We bring in our “big three” roundtable crew Mister Askew, Collin Pope, and Dave Frank to talk all things green, all things Irish, and all the little choices that make the day legendary (or just messy).

We start with the debate nobody agrees on: should St. Patrick’s Day be a federal holiday? From there it turns into a practical guide for how people actually celebrate, from local brewery parties to parades and hometown bar crawls. We get into the food side too: corned beef and cabbage, Reubens on rye, pastrami cravings, and a sleeper old-school condiment you can put on everything. If you’re planning a St. Patrick’s Day menu, you’ll leave with ideas that work whether you’re going out or staying in.

Then we talk drinks the way real people do: Guinness preferences, Irish whiskey staples like Jameson and Bushmills, Bailey’s Irish Cream in coffee, and the seasonal chaos of the McDonald’s Shamrock Shake. We also swap St. Patrick’s Day travel recommendations, from Erie and Youngstown to bigger bucket-list picks like Chicago and Ireland, and we wrap with Irish-themed movie favorites and a rapid-fire finish.

If you’re building your St. Patrick’s Day plans right now, hit play, then subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What city does St. Patrick’s Day best in your opinion?

Welcome And St. Patrick’s Day Setup

SPEAKER_00

Welcome, everybody, to another episode of the Ride Home Rants Podcast. This is your special guest, Fitty, on the ones and twos today. And we bring you a very special episode and wish you a very happy and safe St. Patrick's Day. This episode will be airing this Saturday, right before St. Patrick's Day. So we hope that you have a very safe weekend celebrating St. Patrick's Day, and also a great Tuesday on the 17th, celebrating all things Irish. Before we jump into the show today with our great panel of guests, the big three, even bigger than any NBA big three out there, the big three of Pope, Frank, and Ask you. Before we jump into the topics with these guys, let's make sure we peep all the sponsors in the pre-roll, in the post-roll, as they're all small business owners and they're great supporters of the show. Make sure you're also peeping all these guys on the show today on their individual shows that they've been on and also their previous roundtables. We are in season six already in March. It's crazy that we're approaching 300 episodes here of Ride Home Rant. So make sure you go back and check them all out. If you didn't listen to last week's episode, it is a show all about our sponsors. So make sure you jump on there and check out a few of those great sponsors for the show. Also, make sure you peep our newest sponsor, Web Western, that Mike's been talking about on the shows on the on the rolls as well. So make sure you peep them. Without further ado, though, we got the big three. We have Ask You Frank Pope on the Ride Home Rams podcast talking about all things Irish on all things St. Patrick's Day. And we're going to have a really, really great time today. But before we jump into the topics and before we dive into the show, let's make sure these guys introduce themselves and answer the two random questions that we bring you every week on the round table. So we're going to start, guys, with your name. Do you have any pets? And what is one place that you have visited that was an underrated spot, but a really good time? Mr. Take It Away.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, sir. Mr. Ask Q, aka Vampire Coach. One of my pets that I used to have was a snake. I had a couple of them. And I love snakes. The other thing that I know the one of my favorite places, the underrated place was Savannah, Georgia. The St. Patrick Day down there goes crazy. So that is a place that everybody needs to go and visit, Savannah.

SPEAKER_00

And if anybody doesn't know Mr. Love Savannah, he's at least mentioned that 12 times on 11 different roundtables in his 12th one right now. So make sure you go peep out. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Colin Pope. I got one pet. I have a black lab named Hank. And one place that's underrated that I've been to, I'm about to give a shout out to all my WVU friends and go uh Morgantown, West Virginia. Great place, great atmosphere, and great scenery.

SPEAKER_00

Very true there. It's nothing like some country roads take me home. And Dave, let's round it out with you.

SPEAKER_02

Hey, what's up? Uh D Frank here. And glad to be back. No pets, definitely a dog guy. Unfortunately, lost mine a couple of years ago. Cats are basically walking Chinese food. So uh when we're talking about really exciting, low-key underrated places, I think you'd be bereft on a St. Patrick's Day episode if you weren't talking about Erie, Pennsylvania. My hometown, the they lighted up not only on St. Patrick's Day itself, that's mostly the old heads, but also with the big parade on Saturday and everything. Uh the great thing about it, you can walk around the streets. There's no open container laws. And in the parade, it's just it's unbelievable. You just got to make sure that whatever you got that's green will fit over your winter coat because most of the time it's a little bit chilly.

Should It Be A Federal Holiday

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. I do have one dog. Her name is Pickles. She's great. Uh, and an underrated spot that I've been to, and I love Erie, and people have heard me talk about this all the time on here, but we'll know we'll let Dave speak about it because he's been there. But people have heard me say Erie all the time. I'm gonna say another one though. It's the suburbs of Myrtle Beach, Conway, South Carolina. It's actually a really good time. Former guest of the show, the contributor of roundtables, Drew, and I went down back in December to catch the Myrtle Beach Bowl there on a Friday. And it was really cool. We were right across the street from Coastal Carolina, right in Conway. Had a couple really cool bars, bowling alley, a lot of like restaurants and you know, gas stations and stuff around like that. Very, very friendly to the visitors there. So Conway, South Carolina for me. We're not here to talk away about not here to talk about Conway, South Carolina. We're here to talk about St. Patrick's Day, all things green, all things Irish. So, guys, we're gonna start off the show with this. And I'm curious to hear what you have to say about this. Mister, we're gonna start with you. Should St. Patrick's Day and or Valentine's Day be federal holidays?

SPEAKER_03

Freak no. There shouldn't be no federal holiday. It's just a it's it should just be a recognition of, you know, this is the the day that you can uh let loose.

SPEAKER_00

Figure out the who's letting loose on Valentine's Day, it ain't like St. Patrick's Day with drinking.

SPEAKER_03

There's a lot of drinking going on on Valentine's Day, it just ain't necessary. It just ain't necessary. High octane. This is another juice down below.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Colin, what about you on this one?

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna have to agree with Mr. I I don't think that either of them need to be a national holiday. I I do all my festive celebrating on the weekends anyway. So okay. Dave.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think a federal holiday is valid for St. Patrick's Day because there's large portions of the country that don't recognize it as much as others. Valentine's Day, nobody's letting loose, especially if you're married. And then the the most important one, of course, is if they're gonna do a federal holiday, it should be the Monday after the Super Bowl. If we're if we're gonna start handing out federal holidays, let's get this priority straight.

Weekend Plans And Local Traditions

SPEAKER_00

All right, I figure that would be uh be a good one. Now, guys, what are you gonna do for St. Patrick's Day? Now, it is on a Tuesday. I understand it is like middle of the week. You know, people may have stuff going on, especially if they go to work after. So whether you do something on St. Patrick's Day or this weekend, you know, what are you gonna do if anything, Mister?

SPEAKER_03

Uh man, it's gonna just barbecue, man. Barbecue and most definitely continually ice fish and ice fish and ice fish and ice fish some more. That's it.

SPEAKER_00

Are you gonna be barbecue barbecuing the uh fish out of the ice?

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah, I'm gonna smoke it. Absolutely. This the smoke lake trout is on the menu.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. What about you, Colin?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so locally there's there's a couple different breweries, but there's one in particular that we like to go to. We'll be there Saturday pretty much all day, just drinking and hanging out and enjoying the uh enjoying the festivities. They got a band coming or a couple bands, the couple different ones, Irish step dancing class, all that jazz. So it should be a good time. Okay. All right, what about you, Dave?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so you know, Erie's got a little something for everybody. You know, I'm not gonna be doing kegs and eggs at Sullivan's at 7 a.m. for sure, but you know, Lavery's a local craft brewery, you know, they do a great Irish celebration and they have a big time here in Erie. It's it's definitely not to be missed. You know, and I'll tell you what, vampire coach, if you're smoking a trout, that's gotta be a pretty big pipe. Oh yes, sir.

Corned Beef Cabbage And Chow Chow

SPEAKER_00

That's funny. Yeah, I think, you know, it it's interesting, right? Like when you're talking about what are people doing on St. Patrick's Day, because it's not a federal holiday and it's during the week, like everybody still has to work, right? Where most people have to work, right? So I really do think this weekend will be a big time celebration compared to probably like on Tuesday, right? Like it's people just not taking off in the middle of the week or you know, kids have school and things like that. So I do think this weekend will be will be a good time. Um, I know that uh we'll probably just be hanging, hanging low for us, but you know, in the past I've gone to like the Cleveland Arcade, and that was a really good time watching them with the bagpipes and things like that. You know, there's a lot of great places out there, you know, where Collins Ed is near Youngstown. They they do a big celebration, Dave talking about it in Erie. So a lot of cool things out there for everyone. Mr. I want to go back to you on this one, though. Do you like corned beef and or cabbage, or both, or neither, or one or the other? What are your thoughts on it?

SPEAKER_03

No, man, I like both of them, man. I think that's probably one of the most, you know, a staple of uh St. Patty, you know what I'm saying, the whole festivity, especially corned beef. I most definitely like cabbage, love the cabbage. But I tell you one thing that I love to make with cabbage is chow chow. And if you guys ain't never had that, you guys can look that up, man. But that's some old, old school. Yeah, Frank knows. Yeah, look at him. He knows about that that chow chow. Yeah, but yeah, if you if you ain't never had it, find some find somebody that old head that can really make it and and put them in jars for you, man. You can put that on anything and everything, brother. Chow chow.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, very interesting. Colin, what about you? Are you a fan of both or one or the other, or neither?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I I absolutely like both. And when you smash them together, uh specifically for St. Patrick's Day, it's just that much more good.

SPEAKER_00

Dave, what about you?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so you know, the traditional corned beef and cabbage, if you're gonna get, you know, technical and Irish with it, it's great. But I love Rubens this time of year. When you get the corned beef and you get the crack and, you know, a nice rye bread. Shout out to McGarry's Oakwood Cafe and EriePA. Also, shout out to Federal Hill. They smoke, they do pastrami, but they smoke and make Rubens for uh St. Patrick's Day too. Not to be missed.

Best Towns Bars And Breweries

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you know what? I'm not a cabbage fan. So I I really, you know, I really can't get down with cabbage. I do, as I've gotten older, I've really started to really like corned beef and actually pastrami as well. I feel like I have to, you know, get that when I see it on the menu, especially if you're at, you know, an Irish-themed restaurant or bar, or you're at like a delicatessen. Um, I feel like you have to, you know, get a pastrami or, you know, corned beef. But it was actually a couple years ago, I will tell everybody, a couple years ago, first time I was at the Cleveland Arcade, the friends we were with, they had corned beef, and I never had it until I was probably like 36 years old. And I had it, and I'm like, this is great. I've been missing out all this time. And then I shortly after that film pastrami. So yeah, you can't go wrong with that on rye. Maybe get a side of french fries, some potato salad, you know, replace the cabbage with that. I mean, you gotta get a pickle, right, Dave? You have to get a pickle when you have that. So, guys, I'm curious on this. And Dave kind of talked about it. Colin mentioned it a little bit. But what are some restaurants or bars or even towns that you recommend for people to check out? Maybe they're going out of town or they they're gonna go off the recommendations we have here. What are some bars or restaurants or towns you guys recommend to check out for St. Patrick's Day? Dave, let's go back to you on this.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so there's a couple that I haven't done that that are definitely on the list. And what's crazy is that this this panel is so affluent, they've nailed them. Uh, I definitely want to go to Savannah. I I definitely want to check out Myrtle for St. Paddy's Day because I've heard it's a great one. But I think the the kind of holy grail is is either New York or Chicago. Going to Chicago, they dye the river green, and and it's one that I want to check out that I haven't.

SPEAKER_00

And then, Dave, a couple of the restaurants you would maybe recommend or the taverns in Erie if you want to give them a shout out, or anywhere you've been that are, you know, are really great themed Irish, you know, for St. Patrick's Day.

SPEAKER_02

Well, yeah, anything with a Mick or an O on it, probably anywhere you're in good shape. You know, if you're in Erie, Pennsylvania, the UPick six tap houses are owned by a local Irishman, John Melody, and and they go all out for St. Patrick's Day. Sullivan's Irish pub downtown is great. Uh Lavery's, you know, if you want a little bit more of a mature crowd, you can go in there and you're not going to get green beer. You'll get, you know, you don't want to turn yourself green for the next week. Those are some fantastic places to go in, Erie. I will tell you this: if you're in the south and you're stuck and you can't find any place, a beef O'Brady's will work in a pinch. But, you know, if you're not in a place that doesn't do St. Patrick's Day, right, you got to find it.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Colin, how about you on this one?

SPEAKER_01

I'm going to say Youngstown is a great place if you're traveling through for St. Patrick's Day. There's so many different options. Like I was before, I was saying birdfish brewing just outside of Youngstown, they do a great job with all their themed beers and the music and the and the shows and all the people, it's good. Penguin City, downtown Youngstown, if you're looking for actual Youngstown out of an old steel mill building. So you get the atmosphere, you get all the they do a fantastic job as well. And then if you're looking for a little bit more of a low-key setting, crickets, cricket's bar right there on the middle at the end is a great place as well. Okay. All right, Mr. Round us out on this one.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah. I tell you what, man, if you up here in in the north, up here in Italy, Minnesota, the number one place you gotta go to, man, is the Verro's, man. Sunday with Sue. That's one of the top spots out here, man. They they do it well. We got another spot, man, the frisky otter. You know what I'm saying? Shout out to Mike over there, you know what I'm saying, doing a good job, the restaurant. They got good stuff over there, good food, good drinks. And then also, you got the the crazy rabbit. That's the name of the bar. The crazy rabbit. You got to go and check out where you can throw darts, shoot pool, and drink all the bloody marriage you can indulge in. But those are some good spots to do, but some good places to visit up here. And then you got the Grand Ailly Lodge as well. That's another place you can go to. And but they do they do a good job up here, you know what I'm saying? Put together a nice uh spray for everybody.

Is Everyone Irish For A Day

SPEAKER_00

Okay. You know, I mentioned it. The Cleveland Arcade's really cool, right? Like people rent out all the rooms. They're all five stories, and you know, when they're playing the bagpipes, they throw money down from every single, you know, floor, and they collect it in the bagpipes. Guys, that they have a great parade there. I know Youngstown's really great. You know, Dave kind of mentioned it, right? Like New York, I would throw Boston in there as well. You know, what's more Irish than being in Boston, Boston, you know, Charlestown or something like that, right? You go to Chicago, they got a Rivergreen, Pittsburgh, you know, as well was is a great time for people to check out. But, you know, really there's a lot of the big cities have a proud have a proud Irish heritage to it. One place I would tell people to check out is Jim Thorpe PA, Molly Maguire's. I mean, you got to look it up of what the Molly Maguire's were there with the Irish back in the day during the coal mining. But Molly Maguire's is a great spot in Jim Thorpe. A couple other places I will throw out Malarke's pub in downtown Willoughby. Um I know Colin's been there. It's you know, it's a good time. Also, there's another place I've never been. It's in Menor. People talk about, but it's called the Shamrock Inn. Cash only, no windows. I think they have a strip stripper pole in there. And I once went past her at 6:30 in the morning, coming back from the gym, and there was a person wide open walking out the front door barefoot. So it seemed like it was a good time. And I think that was like on a Tuesday morning. So, you know, that can be a really good, good time for people. But you know, there's a lot of great places out there, right? I think it's a lot of fun to go experience, you know, St. Patrick's Day somewhere new, even if you know you're not Irish and you want to indulge in the festivities. I think it's a it's a really, really good time. So, guys, that leads me into the next question. Okay, is everyone Irish on St. Patrick's Day? Because that's a common saying. But here's what I'm gonna say everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's Day except Italians. We're just still Italian. Mister, take it away.

SPEAKER_03

Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day in some form, fashion, or another, mentally or physically. Everybody for 24 hours, I guess you can say have a pass, huh? They get a 24-hour pass, you know what I'm saying? They be who you want to be. You know, that's just that's you know, you know, that's the second, that's the second Halloween right there, man. Come on, man. It's a second. It's the second Halloween. You got one on the farm, you got one in spring. That's there you go.

SPEAKER_00

All right, I got me. I guess there we go. Colin, what about you? What's your what's your thoughts on this thing?

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I think everybody's Irish on St. Patrick's Day, whether they know it or not. You you'll get there eventually.

SPEAKER_00

All right, Dave, ride us out on this.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's a little bit like uh white man can't jump when uh Woody Harrelson and Leslie Snipes are sitting in the car. He goes, You might be able to hear Jimmy, but you can't hear Jimmy. Like, you know, you might be Irish, but you know, there's those people, and you know you see them, you see the old heads, and they're you know, they're in the same shirt and hat that they've been in for 25 years. You know, those are the OG kind of original Irish people. And everybody else is just kind of faking, but that's okay. You know, you you you can still enjoy St. Patrick's Day and be a little Irish on St. Patrick's Day, but not as Irish as that dude sitting in the corner that dyed his beer green. You you know that that that guy, he's as Irish as they come.

unknown

Oh, yeah.

Bailey’s In Coffee And Guinness Drops

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely. Now, speaking of dyeing your beer green and and guys sitting in the corner, we're gonna go a little bit away from St. Patrick's Day, but still Irish themed. And I want to get your guys' opinion on this. Do you like Bailey's in coffee? Bailey's Irish cream in coffee. I mean, you never had it. I know it's a common dessert drink, but I want to see your guys' opinion on this. Dave, let's start with you on this. Do you like Bailey's in coffee?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, you know, so it's I don't put any cream but Bailey's in my coffee. Typically, I believe that if God wanted anybody to have anything coffee in coffee besides it being black, he would have made it that way. Otherwise, you know, it's it's a nice morning drink or uh or an after dinner aperitif. It's it's really, you know, kind of flexible when it comes to that. And you know, and the ladies love it.

SPEAKER_01

Colin, what about you on this? I have a degree. I I don't normally ever take Bailey's in my coffee. The only time I think I've ever had Bailey's is being dropped into a giant pint glass of Guinness on St. Patrick's Day.

SPEAKER_00

So okay, mister.

SPEAKER_03

Man, I tell you what, man, that's something I'm gonna have to try. Never, I never had it, never tried it. Never, never had that. So I will be trying that very soon, yeah. Absolutely.

Shamrock Shakes And McDonald’s Drama

SPEAKER_00

Here's what I would tell you though, mister, is some friendly advice. Use a little bit, don't use a lot, because it's strong. Use uh use a little bit. Yeah, so it's just like a it's really just a dessert drink, you know, really after a restaurant or something like that. Next one, guys, though, keeping with the kind of the drink trend here, I want to know your thoughts on shamrock shakes from McDonald's. Because me personally, I get down with a shamrock shake. But here's my only gripe, though, right? You ever go to a McDonald's, and it doesn't matter if you're in Youngstown, Erie, Minnesota, the middle of Hawaii, the middle of BFE. Doesn't matter where you're at. 11 a.m., 2A, 2 p.m., 2 a.m., 7 p.m. You ever notice the ice cream machine don't work though? Like, I don't know why that is. Why is your ice cream machine so bad, McDonald's? Because I get down with a shamrock shake and a fish sandwich on a Friday during Lent, there ain't nothing better. But McDonald's always got the shamrock shakes, but you can only get them. It's like like two times out of every 10 you want to go. Regardless, though, if McDonald's ice cream machine is broken or not, mister, do you get down with the shamrock shake from McDonald's?

SPEAKER_03

Man, let me tell you something, man. I I wouldn't eat anything from McDonald's, man. It was the last restaurant on Earth.

SPEAKER_00

I know, I know you hate McDonald's, so that's why I had to ask you first.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But you're not eating, you're drinking, you're drinking it.

SPEAKER_03

I would not have not one thing that McDonald's has to offer ever. If it was the last restaurant on this whole entire planet, okay, fine.

SPEAKER_01

Colin. Oh, I'm all about the shamrock shake, but I'm pretty sure the last one I had was in 2002 because of the whole ice cream machine situation.

SPEAKER_00

So Colin, how old were you in 2002?

SPEAKER_01

Like uh probably about eight.

SPEAKER_00

You haven't had one since you were like eight years old. That's fun. Yeah, because their machines are always broken. How is it broken at 11 a.m. on a Tuesday?

SPEAKER_01

They could they could just finish building the McDonald's and the ice cream machine is broken.

SPEAKER_00

It's broken when they installed it.

SPEAKER_03

You know why you know why the machine is always broken, right?

SPEAKER_00

Just to try to get you to buy more of other stuff.

SPEAKER_03

Nah, man, because that FDA come in, man, and they say, yo, it's not it's not healthy.

SPEAKER_00

That's probably right. Probably, probably right on that. Dave, do you get down with the shamrock shake from McDonald's?

SPEAKER_02

I can tell you why the ice cream machine is always broken, Fiddle.

SPEAKER_00

It's because I'm not Irish on, it's not because I'm not Irish on the holiday, right? It's not because I'm not Irish on St. Patrick's Day.

SPEAKER_02

It's because you're not Irish, period. The uh shamrock shake is is a one time a year uh occurrence just because it's like 4,000 calories in a medium. I will just uh also Throw a small shout out to the the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry because if you want to add to it, you put some some Oreo cookie in there and McDonald's, I'll be damned, you got me again.

SPEAKER_00

All right. Now, I think probably to get that though, right, Dave, you probably have to get that like once every two years, probably because when they want to try to make that, it's probably definitely broken. But like once every two years is pretty good.

SPEAKER_02

It's like the Olympics every four.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Oh, that's funny. But I do love a shamrock shake in all seriousness, though. It is it is really great. All right. Couple of ones here, guys. We're gonna find some humor in these, hopefully. The best drink to have on St. Patrick's Day that's Irish is Colin, take it away.

SPEAKER_01

A tall Guinness at about 32 degrees is the perfect drink on I on St. Patrick's Day. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Dave.

SPEAKER_02

Jameson, uh, you know, if you if you really want to get crazy, you get some bush mills, you know, maybe a little bit of black bush, and you know, a cube or two, but you know, you can't drink your Guinness that cold, Colin. That's that that's a tin right there. You know, uh 50 degrees, like any stout should be drank. And you you're showing you're you're you're not a a true Irishman on St. Patty's Day. If you're drinking race called Guinness.

SPEAKER_00

All right, Mister, what do you got for us?

SPEAKER_03

Man, the best drink to have on St. Patrick's Day, man, is anything that got a high octane. That's it.

SPEAKER_00

And that's the most typical Mr. answer we ever could expect on that on that question. Okay, guys, we're gonna do a couple other ones here. I think you'll have uh things you'll find some humor in this. Colin, I'm gonna probably say you probably never seen these. I would bet, Mr. for sure, and probably Dave. Have you ever seen any of the leprechaun movies, the horror comedy movies? The leprechaun, Mister, take it away.

SPEAKER_03

Man, come on, man. You can't go wrong with man with the one with iced tea in it, baby. That's the best one. Leprechaun in the hood.

SPEAKER_00

Come on, man. You know, that was the first leprechaun I seen. I'm like, this isn't even scary. What is this? I'm like, this is like the stupidest. I think I watched that in high school. Like, this is like the stupidest movie ever. But when you watch it from the beginning on, they did start out like scary, right? Right, right. And they got just like stupid funny, kind of like how Freddie Krueger did with Nightmare on Elm Street, right? Like it started scary, then it just got stupid funny.

SPEAKER_03

That's right. That's 100% correct. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

All right. All right, Colin, have you seen them?

SPEAKER_01

Uh I know what they are, but I can't say I've ever watched any of them all the way through.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, you should uh you should watch it. It's it's they're very, very comical. And they're really the first one, really, wasn't even that scary, but it's just like just very, very comical. I think you would just like laugh. I mean, just laugh a lot. All right, D Frank, what do you got for us?

SPEAKER_02

Wow, you got the gold in your belly. Of course, I've seen the leprechaun movies. Are you kidding me? And uh, by the way, I'd have bet a mortgage payment that my my guy, Mr. Would would have seen them also. Oh, yeah.

Irish Movies And Favorite Stories

SPEAKER_00

It's like I feel like you have to be like over 35 to like have seen them because they would have been coming out like in the 90s and early 2000s. But I'll never forget, man. First time I watched Leprechaun in the Hood, and I'm like, what is this? I'm like, look at look at this leprechaun. What? And then I watched the rest of them. I'm like, wow, some of these are really dumb. A couple of them were okay, but very, very interesting. Man, the leprechaun. Guys, which leads me into this. Now it doesn't have to be like St. Patrick's Day, but it it can be really anything Irish. Like, what is one of your favorite movies that has like an Irish theme behind it? Whether it's, you know, something that's fiction, nonfiction, I'll kind of let you think about this. I think a couple for me. I love the movie The Town because that takes place in Charlestown in Boston with Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner and uh Blake Lively's in that as well. So I really think that movie's great. I also love the movie The Departed, which is loosely based on Whitey Bulger. Great cast, if no one's ever seen that. I'm trying to remember all the people. You have like Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, Leonardo DiCaprio, Anthony Anderson, Matt Dick, Jack Nicholson, like Vera Famila, is that her name? She was in the Bates series as well. You know, she's in that. So Martin, uh, Martin Sheen. Is it Martin Sheen? Yes, Charlie Sheen's bad. Yes, Martin Sheen's bad, you know, as well. So great, great movie. So those are just a couple right there that stand out to me. And then also the movie that they did with Johnny Depp about Whitey Bulger being in Boston, so Black Mass. So those are some of my more Irish themed, you know, kind of gangster movies, but I really, really do like them. But Dave, let's start with you and this. What's what's some of your favorite Irish themed movies?

SPEAKER_02

Well, so I I think probably, and this is a little more serious than a movie than I usually watch, but The Devil's Own with Harrison Ford and Brad Pitt talking about the IRA and and the bombings and stuff there. And and of course, the the title is The Irishman. I think it, you know, even though it's got a bunch of your people in it, it's you know, it's a really great movie, too.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and you know, another one I'm gonna throw out is To Kill the Irishman about Danny Green, the gangster in Cleveland that used to used to run out the Italian mob. And then, of course, Danny Green ended up getting blown up in a dentist, dentist office parking lot. But yeah, the Irishman's a great one, and to kill the Irish, to kill the Irishman's another one. Mr. What about you on this though?

SPEAKER_03

No, you took it right out of my mouth, man. That's what I was gonna say. The killer Irishman, that's one of my favorite ones. And then also the departed. You can't go wrong with those two movies, man. But but especially one, uh, The Kill the Irish Man, you know, uh, I really like that. You ever like watched the documentary on that one?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. Oh no, I I did. And it's crazy, like you're talking about those parts in Cleveland that he lived in, and they're like so close to everything. Like, he the parking lot Danny Green got blown up in by the Italian mob who out of Buffalo and Erie and Youngstown and Warren are the ones that sent the hit squad to do that. So, fun fact. Right, you know, brought down a lot of the mob.

SPEAKER_03

Right, and you know, the the and one of the ways that they caught the people was that uh somebody was in the park and they were sketching. They were doing a sketch of of just random people that was walking by. Watch that part. They were just doing a random sketch of people just walking by. This person with I can't remember, I think it was a lady, but she was a sketch artist, and but she was just so happening, she was in the park and she was just you know just sketching the park and everything and getting ideas, and she saw some guys walking, and she just drew a sketch of him. And that's how they was able to get the um, you know, that's how they was able to capture, find out who did it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's actually pretty crazy when you uh when you think about how they caught him off of that. But Danny Green, when I used to work in South Euclid, got blown up right down the street, right in like the uh the Lynnhurst, Lynnhurst part, Beechwood-ish, like right in that area, right off the exit. But Colin, how about you on this? What's your favorite or couple favorite Irish theme movies?

SPEAKER_01

You got you guys got my favorite one, Kill the Irishman. I watch it every year on St. Patrick's Day, just like Rudolph on Christmas. It's it's like a tradition, and Danny Green is engraved in Irish culture just like all the other things now for me. So it's it's an awesome story. I love the I love to read about it. I love watching the movie. I think it's uh quintessential Irish culture.

Dream St. Patrick’s Day Destination

SPEAKER_00

For sure, for sure. All right, guys. Last one, we're gonna round out on this Saint Patrick's Day episode. So, where is the one place and we're gonna talk city? Okay, now we kind of threw some cities out, but the one city that you would want to visit more than any other for Saint Patrick's Day, the one city more than any other for St. Patrick's Day, Mr. Where are you going?

SPEAKER_03

Germany. I'm going to Germany. Yes, I'm going to go.

SPEAKER_00

Germany's a country, it's not a town or a city.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, there's there's a there's a city in Germany called Germany, too, man. Come on, man. It's somewhere there.

SPEAKER_00

Oh god, Mr.

SPEAKER_01

Mr. Colin, what about you? So I've actually been in Dublin on St. Patrick's Day before, not on purpose. It was a happy accident. So I'm gonna have to go ahead and say my second choice would have to be Galway over in Ireland on the other opposite end of the country. Uh, it's definitely known for keeping up with the traditions, keeping up with with their culture. It's like their cultural hub. So I'd have to pick that one.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. All right, very cool on that one. And like just like Bob Ross's trees, there's no, there's only happy little accidents. So uh that's what we're gonna go with with that. All right, Dave, what city are you going to?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so uh this time of year, I'm I'm still mostly frozen up here in Erie. So I gotta go south. Um I'm with my man, Mister. I want to go to Savannah. I want to check it out and uh warm up a little bit. Yes, I heard all right, all right.

Wild Rapid Fire Questions

SPEAKER_00

Well, that is kind of the all the questions we have for the topics about St. Patrick's Day. But before we let everybody go, we got a big three, which is a spinoff of the fast fitty five. So each of these gentlemen gets one random question for me to round out this week's episode. Guys, we're gonna have a little bit of uh fun with this. Okay, Mister. I'm gonna you we're gonna see if you know this or not. True or false, Napoleon was once attacked by 3,000 pained bunny rabbits.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, he was.

SPEAKER_00

That is that is true. That is true. I found it on a random search. He wanted to do a hunt, and his whatever captains, instead of getting wild rabbits, they had they they got like pet rabbits, and they were so hungry they associated Napoleon was giving them food. So Napoleon was charged by 2,000 bunny rabbits. He had to hop in his carriage and they had to take them, take them away. So Mr. is correct on that. Alright, Dave. It's you, Mister, and Colin in a racquetball court. You have a set of boxing gloves taped to your hands, Colin has an empty gas canister, and Mr. has two rusty butter knives. What are the chances you guys can survive and make it out within 10 minutes fighting 100 Emperor penguins with no lights?

SPEAKER_02

I'm sorry, did you say with no legs?

SPEAKER_00

Lights, no lights on in the racquetball court.

SPEAKER_02

I'm gonna say that when when you're when your doom is inevitable, you just sit back and enjoy it. We're done.

SPEAKER_00

You guys are big dudes. I feel like you can take on a four-foot penguin. You guys are big dudes.

SPEAKER_03

We're gonna make sushi on every single last one of them.

SPEAKER_00

Man, all right, Colin. Final one for you. What's more terrifying? Going to the moon for you personally, going to the moon or going into the Mariana trench underwater.

SPEAKER_01

Oh man. I'm gonna have to say going to the moon, because if they uh if something little gets messed up, uh it's the same for both, I guess. But if if you go to the moon and something wrong happens, you're just floating out there forever, all by your lonesome till you freeze to death. At least if you if you're in Mariana's trench, it'll be quick because you just get crushed.

Final Toast And Sign Off

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I uh I I had that discussion with someone one time, and I'm like, you know what? Going to outer space is like the most terrifying thing to me because there's just no sound, there's no noise, and it's just vast nothing. Just vast nothing. And that's terrifying to think about. But we're not here to terrify anyone. We want to thank everyone for tuning in to this week's episode of the Ride Home Rants Podcast, as we talked about all things St. Patrick's Day with the legendary trio of Mr. D Frank and Colin.
