Within this week's broadcast / podcast edition of 'Words of Life'...

A stunning realization occurs: three times in Revelation 22, Jesus says the same thing: “I am coming soon.” We must take that repetition seriously, because it sits at the edge of the Bible’s closing words and it refuses to let us treat eternity like a distant idea. 

Pastor Mark’s message is titled “Imminent,” and we define it plainly: unavoidable, guaranteed, approaching. If God says it, it is not a vague hope or a religious slogan. It is a certainty that demands a response. By chain referencing Scripture that highlights God’s truthfulness and His power to accomplish what He speaks, this focus points us to where our attention belongs: the cross. 

The message explains why “I’m a good person” is not enough, what sin actually does, and why Jesus alone satisfies God’s requirement for salvation. It is Pastor Mark, Words of Life. And before we get started, I like to do this before every broadcast, every podcast. I want to thank you because the truth of the matter is, you could have been doing anything else. You could have been watching anybody else, but you have allowed the Holy Spirit to touch your heart to listen to a word of God, the gospel from this ministry, the ministry of my wife and I, words and I, uh, words of life. And for that, we do thank you. Let's go right into our words of life, the Bible. Uh, and we're gonna turn to the last book of the Bible. Let's go. Uh, I think this uh I'm about to put the font up on the screen, like right about now, maybe. Uh the book of Revelation, chapter 22. Uh, we're gonna read a few verses in that same chapter. Again, easy to get to, the very last book uh of the Bible, Revelation. We're gonna start with chapter 22. Uh, let's start with verse 7. Hopefully the font is up on the screen uh and you're looking at it. I'm gonna go ahead and begin reading Revelation chapter 22, verse 7. It reads as follows. Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of prophecy in this book. Let's skip down to verse 12, same chapter, chapter 22. Behold, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me to give to each one according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. One more verse, verse 20, uh, same chapter, verse 22. Reads as follows He who testifies to these things says, Yes, I am coming soon. Amen. Or it is so. The verse concludes, Come, Lord

What “I Am Coming Soon” Means

Jesus. Three times we've heard in our opening text, uh, Revelation chapter 22, uh, we read verses 7, 12, and 20, and we hear the phrase, I am coming soon. Jesus is warning us, he's giving us a heads up. And so as we get started in our text this week, as we start our sermon, again, if you didn't catch the title earlier, the title of the message is entitled Eminent. And to be imminent, if we were to define it right off the bat, imminent means unavoidable, guaranteed, impending, about to happen, approaching, looming, certainty, forthcoming. God chooses to close his biblical revelation to us with verse 20 in revelations that we just read. It's important to note because it's the last, it's the next to the last verse of the Bible right before the closing salutation, and that unmistakable message that we can't, you know, that we can't miss. That we we we witnessed this within the final chapter and the next to the last verse. Uh, like I said, when we started uh today's sermon, Jesus is coming soon. I am coming soon. I you hear that three times. I I that's that you just can't, you can't omit or overlook or ignore that fact. I am coming soon. Next, next to the last verse of the Bible, um, but verses 7, verses 12, verses 20, I am coming soon. It's kind of like a warning. Um, it's as if Jesus is letting us know I'm coming quickly, I'm coming suddenly, there is no doubt. And so God co-signs Jesus' warning with amen. And we know that simply means it is so. And so I want us to understand as we get started, God's ultimate justice, it is imminent. Not saying ignore what's happening and going on today, but you don't have to worry about it. God is a God of justice, and his ultimate justice, it is forthcoming, it is imminent. His promise of eternal peace, it is imminent. The restoration of all things prior to the fall, it is imminent. We have to understand that God never talks just to hear himself speak. If God has said a thing, you can bank on it, it's guaranteed. But what we have to understand is when God has spoken, action from us is always mandatory since he is spoken. Understand that God watches over, he carries out, he performs his words. Not sometimes, always. Again, let's refer to our title, to our title, imminent. Imminent is to be unavoidable, it is guaranteed, it is impending. If God said it, it will happen. It is approaching. If it hasn't happened, it's approaching, it's looming. There's a certainty to God's word. Anything God has said, it is forthcoming. Now, I understand that there might be some listening or watching, and you still doubt. Oh, that's just, man, things are supposed to have been happening. What's happened? Nothing's happened yet. That was so long ago. It's just the book. For those that still doubt, let's reference a few passages where God Himself reminds us that if he says it, the result is imminent, and nothing or nobody can stop

God’s Word Always Comes True

him. Let's look at the book of Numbers, chapter 23, verse 19. The verse reads, God is not a man that he should lie, nor a son of man that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do? Or has God spoken and will he not make it good? The book of Isaiah, chapter 46, verses 9 through 10. Remember what happened long ago, God says, For I am God, and there is no other. I am God, and there is none like me. I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, My purpose will stand, and all my good pleasure I will accomplish. Let's look at Jeremiah chapter one, verse twelve. The Lord says, For I am watching over my word to accomplish it. Ezekiel chapter 12, verse 25, because I, the Lord, will speak whatever word I speak, and it will be fulfilled without delay. The 119th Psalm, verse 89, Your word, O Lord, is everlasting. It is firmly fixed in the heavens. Isaiah chapter 55, verse 11. So my word that proceeds from my mouth will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it. Daniel chapter 4, verse 35. All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and he, God, does as he pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain God's hand or say to him, What have you done? I pray the previous scriptures resonate deep within our hearts. And here's the fact again. I'm just gonna this might be repeated, repeated at nauseum throughout this message. If God said it, it's as good of a guarantee that we can get. It is total assurance. There is never any doubt about any word from God coming to pass. Now, I want us to remember, God never talks just to hear himself speak. We have to understand that if God has said it, action from us will always be mandated, since God has already spoken about who he has chosen to exalt eternally.

Why Jesus Came For Us

That person is Jesus the Christ, his son. Understand what Jesus did on our behalf. Jesus for 33 years willingly vacated all that he'd ever known. Think about that. Eternity past. It's hard for us to even imagine because we live in time. God lives outside of time. So for 33 years, Jesus dropped into time from eternity past, and he left heavenly worship. He left the presence of his father. He left the fellowship with the Holy Spirit. He did that willingly for 33 years to come to earth to meet God's demand for the payment of sin. And this is where we humanity enter the story. Let's go to Romans chapter 5, verses 18 and 19. The verses read, Just as one sin, that sin from Adam, brought condemnation for all men, all of humanity, so also one act of righteousness, Jesus' death and resurrection, it brought justification and life for all men, all of humanity. For just as through the disobedience of the one man, Adam, the many, humanity, were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man, Jesus the Christ, that the many, humanity, will be made righteous. If you're still doubting, because at this point, you know, uh we hear a lot, I'm a good person, I'm religious, none of that matters. Let's let's get some some context, some perspective right here. We have God, we have sovereign, holy, perfect, righteous, truth, agape love, omniscient, all-knowing, omnipotent, all power, omnipresent. There is nowhere that he is not. We let's get an understanding as much as we can of God's divine attributes, and we still we're limited. Now, here's something we can relate to humanity. We are sin par excellence, meaning we do so at the highest level possible. We have mastered the art of sinning. No one sins better than humans. We are humans and we are sin personified. And so one itty itty itty bitty sin that we might think, oh, that's nothing. Nope, that disqualifies us from being in God's presence. We were eternally lost, we deserved hell, even though it wasn't created for humans, but that's another story. But along came Jesus, the cross, the ultimate sacrifice, the only one that could satisfy God's requirements. Again, he left eternity for 33 years to safely reconcile us back to God. Jesus faithfully completed his mission. And now, Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is in the hearts, he's in the hearts of every believer. The Holy Spirit is not an it, it's not a ghost floating in the cosmos, he is a third part of the Trinity. Holy Spirit is a he, and he is in the heart of every believer with the sole purpose of helping us, sanctifying us, equipping us to start telling everyone what God has already said regarding Jesus. And so, before returning back to the right hand of his father, Jesus literally reaffirms the same message that God would, and that we heed and act upon. I want to repeat that. Not to be disrespected. Jesus is not to be mislabeled or erroneously identified as just a routine prophet of his time. Understand, God is judging humanity on how each one of us take action or neglect to do so by rejecting Jesus. God is judging those with unrepentant, eternal sin, or if you're just relying on facing God in your own goodness. You know, I'm a good person, I'm religious, I go to church. No. Do you have a relationship with Jesus the Christ? Because with Jesus' imminent return, Jesus is coming to get and to receive his own, but he will commence judging all that rejected him or his ultimate gift on our behalf. Let's go back to our opening text, just to reference it. The book of Revelation, chapter 22, verse 12. Jesus said, Behold, I am coming soon, and my reward is with me, to give each one according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and I am the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Jesus' return, it is imminent. The book of Acts, chapter 1, verse

Scriptures On The Second Coming

11. They, the disciples, they were looking intently into the sky as he, Jesus, was ascending, when suddenly two men, angels, dressed in white, stood beside them. The angel said, Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way that you have seen him go into heaven. So, angels give us a clue. Jesus is returned, it is imminent. Revelation chapter one, verse seven. Behold, he, Jesus, is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him. This is this is haunting, this next phrase. Even those who pierced him, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. So shall it be, amen. Or it is so. Jesus' return is imminent. The Gospel of Luke, chapter 21, verses 26 through 27. The verses read, Men will faint from fear and anxiety over what is coming upon the earth. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man, Jesus, coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to happen, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Jesus' return. I cannot repeat this enough. It is imminent.

The book of John, chapter 14, verse 3. And if I, Jesus, go and prepare a place for you, he's speaking to the disciples, I will come back and welcome you into my presence, so that you may also be where I am. I can't repeat it enough. Jesus is telling us, his return is imminent.

The Need To Be Prepared

And so I want us before we get to our application points, think about this. If God warns us in the last chapter of the Bible, in the last book of the Bible, in the next to last verse of scripture in the Bible, that Jesus' return is imminent, if Jesus comforted his followers with the promise of coming back for them so that they could be where he is forever. If angels encouraged disciples after Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension, that he's coming back the exact same way that he left, it would behoove those of us within earshot of this promise to be properly prepared for this unavoidable, guaranteed, impending, approaching, certain, forthcoming event that most certainly will happen, whether we are ready or not. Jesus' return is imminent. And since that is the case, what actions can we take to ensure that we are properly prepared if we are still alive? We're gonna address that before we get right back into our message, imminent, and give us the application points to close our sermon. Take a look at this and we'll be right back. Don't move.

Point One Stay Ready

We're back, and the title of our sermon is Entitled Imminent, Jesus' return to get believers, his church. It is imminent, but those that reject his sacrifice on behalf, the covering of sin on the behalf of humanity, he's coming back to judge. And so, since this is the case, Jesus' return being imminent to receive believers and to judge those who chose not to accept what he did on their behalf. If that's the case, what actions can we take to ensure that we are properly prepared if we're still alive? Well, here's point number one. We must maintain readiness for Jesus' imminent return. Again, we must maintain readiness, vigilance for Jesus' imminent return. Let's turn to the book of Matthew, chapter 25. Uh, I want to start at verse one because this is the parable of the ten virgins. Uh, or should I say the yeah, the did I say virgins or virgins? Uh the parable of the ten virgins in Matthew chapter twenty five, beginning at verse one. Verses read, At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps, but they did not take along any extra oil. But the wise ones took oil and flask along with their lamps. When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy, and they fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out, Here's the bridegroom, come to meet them. Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish one said to the wise, give us some of your oil, our lamps are going out. No, said the wise men, the wise ones, for there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil, and buy some for yourselves. But while the foolish virgins, while they were on their way to buy the oil for their lamps, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready, the wise virgins, they went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut. Later the other virgins arrived and said, Lord, Lord, open the door for us. But he replied, Truly, I tell you, I do not know you. Therefore, keep watch because you do not know the day or the hour. So cultural context is needed here because in ancient Jewish wedding customs, the groom would unexpectedly arrive at the bride's house in the middle of the night. And so the bridesmaids needed properly lit oil lamps to escort the procession, bride and groom, into the marriage celebration. And so the moral is spiritually, this parable serves as a metaphor for us being spiritually ready, physically ready. It teaches the importance of vigilance, watchfulness, being prepared for the second coming of Christ, as the exact day or the hour is unknown. Jesus doesn't even know it, only God knows it. And if that be the case, we must maintain our readiness for Jesus' imminent return. Here's application point number two.

Point Two Warn The Oblivious

We must inform the oblivious about Jesus' imminent return. We're gonna stay in the Gospel of Matthew, but we're gonna go back to chapter 24. And I want to start reading at verse 36 when we're talking about informing the oblivious, those that are just unaware. We need to inform them about this imminent return of Jesus, the ruler of all. Verse 36 in Matthew 24 reads as follows: No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark. And they were oblivious. I want to pause right there. Although it had never rained before in history, nobody thought to like, man, these clouds are pretty dark. Wow, it just looks really gray. And it, man, do y'all sense that moisture in the it had never rained. Nobody was aware of their surroundings. They were just oblivious. Is it's somewhat like, you know, I I teach high schoolers the art uh of drawing blood, phlebotomy, and it's amazing. It's still all about the blood. And in teaching them, uh, I give a lot of lessons to them. Somebody might come in unexpectedly, uh, they might be able to complete their venipuncture attempts. And so I'm always trying to teach my high schoolers: hey, opportunity is never a lengthy visitor. You can't waste time getting ready when opportunity knocks. You have to be ready. Opportunity doesn't stay long. You miss it, you might have to wait a bit for the next time or the next opportunity to come around. Don't be oblivious when your surroundings are giving you at any moment opportunity can knock. And so let's go back to the text. Although it had never rained, you know, I know it seemed like it could be pretty easy to make fun of Noah and this big arc. But again, wow, why are two giraffes going in like there are why are these animals going in in a row two by two? Nobody paid attention, just it this is not normal. They were just oblivious until the flood came, and then it was too late. Oh, now it makes sense, it's raining. Now I see the purpose of the boat. Oh, two by two, male and female, these animals are cut, got it, but the flood, because they were oblivious, swept them all away. The verses conclude, So will it be. In other words, the same thing will happen at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field, one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the meal, one will be taken and the other left. Two workers, just one at the meal, one in the field, men, well, it doesn't matter. One's taken, the one that's left was not prepared or ready, watching, prepared for Jesus' return. The verses conclude, therefore, keep watch, because you do not know the day on which your Lord will come. I want to backtrack to verse 39 and address that word oblivious, because it just means to be unaware, to be unconscious or unmindful, to be insensible, although facts are right in front of us, and God's word is fact. To be oblivious is to be ignorant, i.e. not knowing. That's all ignorance means, not knowing. And so our role, those of us that believe, those of us that have accepted God's word as He He said it, that's all that needs to happen for me. I believe it. And we're awaiting Jesus' return. We shouldn't just kick to the curb or ignore those in our circle of influence, um, our family, our co-workers, as if, hey, you're on your own. No, we must inform them like we were informed. We must warn the oblivious like we were warned. Our circle of influence, our families, our co-workers, Jesus' return, it is imminent. And we must inform the oblivious about this fact that will occur. Let's get to our final application point before we close the message. And our last application point is simply this. If you're watching via the broadcast, you're listening via the podcast, I want us to understand point number three.

Point Three Act Before It’s Late

We must act upon God's offer now, before Jesus' imminent return. It was easy to react in Noah's day once it started raining and the flood made the ark start floating, and all of a sudden people started drowning. Oh, okay, now it makes sense. That's too late. We have to act upon God's offer now before Jesus' imminent return. Second Peter chapter 3, verses 3 through 6 addresses what I really just gave us a you know colorful example of, a story of. The verses read, most importantly, you must understand that in the last days, mockers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. It might sound like, where is this G where is the promise of his coming? They will say, they will ask. Ever since our fathers fell asleep, you know, our fathers, our grand, our grandfathers, the generation before us, before they died, fell asleep. Everything continues that it has from the beginning of creation. What are you talking about? Where is this Jesus? But they deliberately overlooked the fact that long ago, watch this, by God's word, the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time perished in the flood. Watch this, and by the same word, God's word, the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. Understand that God never said he wouldn't judge or destroy everything and everyone that rejected his offer. He kept his word and he places a rainbow in the sky every time it rains, he kept his word that I will not destroy the earth again or sinful humanity, I won't destroy it again. But note, by water is what he said. But in refusing Jesus' offer of salvation and reconciliation to God after Calvary, that places one in the category of verse seven, which is that person is being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men, not by water this time, but by fire. Second Peter chapter 3, skipping down to verse 9. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, his word, as some understand slowness. But God is patient with us, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance, to perish eternally. That is the result of rejecting Jesus' offer prior to his ultimate return to judge. To judge, to receive his, but to jose, but to judge those who chose not to accept his offer. Hebrews chapter 9, verses 27 and 28. Just as a man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment, so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. And he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him. Thus, judgment awaits those who are not eagerly awaiting or anticipating Jesus' imminent return.

The ABCs Of Salvation

Here's the most important part of any message. It is the only reason that I am before you, be it broadcast or podcast, and it is my prayer that in this this this many uh statement is for pastors and preachers worldwide. God has chosen us to preach and teach the gospel only for this purpose, the ABCs of salvation. We cannot assume everybody in our circle of influence, circle of influence, those that are faithful to watching or listening to our platforms, even if they're going to a building, we cannot assume that everyone is safe and secure and they are saved from God's wrath. So the invitation to Christ, I'm praying that every sermon I see or watch, that we have some kind of challenge because it's all about the cross. We must take people to the cross. And if we have not, we have wasted a lot of time. It is getting depressing logging into social media or watching pastors fight pastors, churches fight churches, denominations fight denomination. None of that even really matters. It's all about the blood, it's all about the cross. And if you can listen to any preacher that has preached anything and you don't hear Jesus Christ as the sole way of salvation back to God, securing your eternity safely, run, turn them off. We need to be taken to the cross. And it is not something that I'm saying, hey, tune in to me. No, just discern, use wisdom in the messages. God did not send Jesus to the cross for self-help, for psychology, for riches, none of that. It's all about the cross. And so I am before you. If you're watching the broadcast, if you're listening to the podcast, viewer or listener, it's not a coincidence that you're watching, wherever you might be. This is a God-ordained moment to commit to action. God has spoken, commit to action. Which category do we unequivocally belong to? Because we're in one of two categories. Category one, you've accepted God's offer of Jesus as the sole savior of humanity. And as we live, we eagerly await Jesus' return. Where we will be caught up, i.e. raptured, to be with him forever, if we're still alive. If we pass before his return, we're coming back with him, because our physical bodies have been laid to rest prior to his return, and we have glorified spiritual bodies that will last eternally. Or you're in category two. You've rejected Jesus' offer, or you've ignored it, or you just don't believe it. But know this. You are in danger of judgment and you are not prepared for Jesus' imminent return. If you die before making this ultimate decision, that decision will reverberate eternally for you. Category two does not have to be for anybody watching or listening. So let's pray together as we close our message. Lord, in the name of Jesus Christ, the ABC is a salvation. Lord A, I accept and I believe what God says is fact. And I acknowledge what God says about my sinful existence. But Lord B, I believe what God has said about what Jesus alone was able to procure for me. And then C, Lord, I confess what God has said in his word. And I will testify now with my mouth, praying that Holy Spirit helps me to say what God has already said for the purpose of edifying believers and to reach the lost who are unprepared for an imminent appointment with you, O God. It is in the name of Jesus Christ that I pray. Thank you, Holy Spirit. We say together, amen, or it is. So well, that is my time for another opportunity to present God's gospel of Jesus the Christ.
