Housing with pets
A quick plea for resources for people in need of housing with pets. Moving and having a housing situation become pet-unfriendly are the two most common reasons people surrender their pets to shelters. If you know of help for people having to choose between housing and pets, please email me at mitch@pghtails.com so we can spread the word and connect people with the help they need, keeping more pets in their homes.
Good morning, Pittsburgh! My name is mitch, and this is Pittsburgh Tails, a podcast about the creatures of western Pennsylvania and the people who care for and about them. Today I am here to tell you about a story I read in the news about a couple, Samuel and Jill Deriggi, in Wilkinsburg who are being evicted from their home and are concerned about finding a new place to live because, among other things, they have a big dog. If you know of a place that might work for this couple and their dog, my guess is that you can contact them through WTAE or the Allegheny County sheriff’s office. But really I want to note that finding a home with your pets, especially large dogs, is always difficult, even without a pandemic. It’s cited as the most common reason people surrender their pets to shelters each year. And of course that’s not even counting the pets rehomed or even just abandoned when people move or when a housing situation becomes pet-unfriendly. A choice between housing and a pet is one none of us should ever need to make. So if you know of resources to help people in this situation, please email me at mitch@pghtails.com so we can spread the word and connect people with that help. You can also email me if you have questions or comments about animals in our region or a suggestion for an episode. I’d love to hear from you. Thanks for listening.
