As you scroll through social media, it may seem like creativity is everywhere! Since the demand for creativity is so high these days, we're experiencing more creative blocks because of the sense of obligation, imposter syndrome, and expectations. Thankfully, there are so many ways to tap into our creativity and bring it back to the surface. 🎨

Ever since I became aware that I wasn't utilizing my creativity the way I used to as a child, I've made it a priority to tap into my creativity on a regular basis. My business has actually never done better since I have been tapping into my creativity more frequently! 📈

Kailee [00:00:04]:

Welcome to Branded and booked your space to come into alignment with yourself and business. I'm your host, Kaylee, and I'm your magical brand and website designer. Here you will find yourself being inspired, educated, and connecting with others from around the world who are following their dreams and defining their idea of success along the way. Wow, has this episode been a long time coming. And this is actually a topic that I have done numerous presentations on, both within my membership within communities and in online groups and Facebook. And it is just a topic that needs to be talked about. As you know, when we think about creativity, that's the topic of today is diving deep into that, we often think of this almost idealized type of concept. Creativity is something that is artwork.

Kailee [00:01:12]:

It's the artist's mind. It's what you find in the museum, it's what you find that people are constantly putting up their work on social media or they're transforming their creativity into money, essentially. And that's a lot of what our world and what I've noticed, and I've really been picking up a lot, and I've come to find creativity is a huge struggle. There's this weird concept from being a creative and being a creator and making money or just doing it to do it. And I think that's why I wanted to bring this topic up today and really have this conversation with you, because it's something that I've talked to many people about over the years of being a creative myself and deciding to go down the path of being a creative that also utilizes my talents, my expertise, my brain to make money off of it. But so often, creativity is so much more than that. You don't have to be making money to be a creative. You don't have to channel certain aspects of creativity to be good at it.

Kailee [00:02:34]:

Creativity just is. And I'm so excited to talk to you about that concept today because wow, are we living in a world where demand for creativity is really high and social media and content creation drives so much of what this idea? Of creativity is and has to be because we're exposed to so much more of it, which is awesome. But there's also a lot of things that can come up with that, right? There's so much that can block us from our creativity. There's more creative block, and there's impostor syndrome, and there's expectations of having to do one thing or over promising or feeling obligated to create. So as we dive in today, I first want to let you know that you are a creative person. And you might be thinking, oh my gosh, Kaylee, no, I'm not. I can barely draw a stick figure to save my life. And if that's you thinking that right now, I just want to let you know that, hey, drawing a stick figure is still a form of creativity, and creativity comes in all forms and shapes and sizes and colors and mediums and genres, and creativity is a beautiful thing.

Kailee [00:04:03]:

It's an exciting thing. Also, what's so cool is I just said that, and lightning just struck outside with thunder. And I was like, yes. Hear what I'm saying? Because it has to be true, and it has to resonate with so many people, this idea of creativity needing to be something very specific. And everybody has a sense of creativity. And one of my absolute favorite. When I was doing the presentation for my membership or I talked to people about it, I have this video saved, and it's from TikTok, of course, by another creator. But it was the most beautiful video, and I just think of it often, especially when I myself am dealing with creative burnout or frustration around.

Kailee [00:04:46]:

Creativity is a really big one for me. Like, sometimes I just can't channel it, whether it be I'm burnt out or I'm emotionally strung out, or I'm just tired, or I just don't want to think, I don't want to be creative. Especially when you have a creative business and career, creativity still becomes a job in a sense, and it gets really tiring. So this video, she's writing this cute little sketch, and she's talking about what creativity is and how all of us have creativity in us. And if we go back to our very, very early years, each of us had a sense of creativity. And we weren't creating because we were being told to. We were simply just creating because we wanted to. We were creating because it was almost second nature to us before we were even going to these art classes.

Kailee [00:05:43]:

Or maybe the first time you were introduced to a group setting, or you were just at home with one of your guardians or even your siblings, and you were being creative in some way, shape or form, where it rather be finger painting or building Legos or even just having an imagination. All of those outlets are a form of creativity. And it was so special because she said, if we could just step into that mindset again, if we could just not even think about it, just create because we want to create, how beautiful of a transformation that would just be for us. And something I've learned as I've gotten older in why I decided to go down the creative outlet and how my creativity has changed so much over the years. When I first started, like, an elementary school, well, first, when I was very fortunate, my mom was a stay at home mom, and she did a lot of arts and crafts with me, and one of them was finger painting, and I'm sure she still has these. They were my very first finger paints. And maybe this set the whole fate of my future, but she kept them and she framed them, and they were up in our living room all the way until we moved. When I was in late middle school years.

Kailee [00:07:09]:

And so to go into your living room every single day and be like, yeah, there's my finger paintings from when I was little. That is so cool. That something so simple being able to experience that moment. And I don't remember painting those, but the fact my mom kept them and they meant something so big to her that she decided to frame them and keep them in the house. I think about how that could have formed a lot of my thinking around creativity and how she honored this moment of creativity when I was so young, even though I don't remember those memories they've carried with me for years, and going from that moment to then being creative with my sister. Her and I would have such imaginative playtime of being in our playhouse and playing school. Or me learning how to draw from my dad for the first time and then going into my high school years and really transforming. How I felt and my emotions into drawing and my art and learning how to draw when I felt sad and make these really sad, dark things.

Kailee [00:08:17]:

But it was so beautiful to be able to transform how I was feeling just into some type of visual. But creativity doesn't stop there. Creativity is in dancing. It's in the way we move our bodies. It's in the way we approach our day to day. It's in our spiritual work, and it's in how we communicate or it's in how we decide to cook. Like, cooking is so creative. Oh, my gosh, taking a recipe.

Kailee [00:08:45]:

One of my favorite new things is taking a recipe, cooking, but changing it just slightly. Like, for example, the other day, I wanted to make these fried chicken tacos, and I am not great at cooking meat. Usually I let Zach handle all of that, but this time I was like, no, I can do this. I can fry this meat, and it's going to be delicious. And the recipe also, I was missing a couple ingredients, and it was supposed to be spicy, and I can't handle spicy food. So the creative process to be like, okay, I can take some ingredients out. What can I sub for it? So it was like, add jalapeno juice and jalapenos to the recipe, and all I had was pickles. So I was like, what would happen if I put pickle substitute in there? And it ended up turning out delicious.

Kailee [00:09:35]:

Like, it was like a pickle ranch fried chicken taco. I don't know. It was amazing. But that's a form of creativity. And the beauty of all this creativity is that it's also such a wonderful space to be inside of both from our heart center to our mind to the way it relaxes our body. Because truly, when you can get into a creative state, a creative flow, you can also channel and get into a state of meditation. And that's one of my favorite things about being a creative is it becomes such this sacred space and this space to just be. And even if you're doing just like a craft night, do a craft night alone, like, whatever you want to do.

Kailee [00:10:23]:

If you want to go to the Dollar Tree and you just want to do a paint by number, or if you're going to Michael's and you're grabbing like a bead kit and you're making bracelets, or if you're just coloring in a book. Those are all sense of creativity and meditation and being able to replace scroll time or replace time that we spend. I love a good binge of some Netflix. Recently, I've been binging a couple shows during the day. But if we could replace just some of that time, it doesn't even have to be long, but even maybe like 1520 minutes to get into a creative state of flow and a creative mindset, just thinking about it, I feel relaxed and at ease. And that's why all these pottery places have done really good. Or what else do they have, like, sip and paints? They do really successful because being creative, even if you see yourself making something good or maybe you see it and you're like, this doesn't look good, it's still a form of creativity, and it's still allowing yourself to just be in a space to go through the motion of doing something. And I love it, and it's so beautiful and it's exciting.

Kailee [00:11:48]:

And if you just give yourself that time and that space to channel that again. I want you to see how it feels in your body, how you can be in that moment and you could just surrender to it and not have to overthink it. And just play with color, play with tangible objects, play with your imagination. And just be there for that time and take out any pressure. I think what I want to transition to talking about is the pressure to create. And this is such a huge thing, especially within my profession. It's a lot of pressure to create. I'm developing brands and logos and websites.

Kailee [00:12:31]:

It's a lot of time, it's a lot of energy, it's a lot of creative work. And sometimes when I just do that, I don't have any other outlet of creativity. Oh, do I hit burnout like crazy? Do I feel exhausted? Do I feel emotionally depleted. Because I'm not allowing myself to just create, to create. And so if you're creative listening to this, this message right here is really for you, because I've seen time and time, whether it be with my own clients or those that I'm friends with, we want to be creative. We want to channel what we love to do, but then we fall into this pressure of the need, of the demand of the creativity, and oftentimes our creativity isn't quite ready for that yet. And if you're a small business owner and you want to tie that into creativity and you've hit burnout or you've hit this block where you're like, oh my God, I don't want to do this. I don't want to sell this.

Kailee [00:13:43]:

I don't want to do something that somebody else is telling me and channel their creativity and creating this pressure. If you're going into that and you're stuck into this mindset, you're going to have to take a step back and take a breather. And if you want to continue forward, just really come from a space that feels right, rather that be taking the pressure off of it or getting down to the basics of why you started or the initial skills or ideas that you started with for your creativity and this business model behind it. Because when we can step back and we can go, okay, where was my inspiration at the beginning? Where was I feeling the most inspired? How can I transform this back into a money making model? And especially when it comes to content creation. Content creation and creativity are two very different things. And I think content creation is a huge different form of creativity. Yes, it's very strategic, but there's also so much creativity that goes behind it. I mean, think about all the videos we put together and think about all the graphics that we make, the photo shoots that we do, and all the amount of creativity that really goes into content creation.

Kailee [00:15:12]:

And so that alone is already taking a lot of that creative energy. It's taking a lot of what you could be in just like a natural state doing. You're doing it strategically because you feel this pressure or you feel this need or if you have a following that they're expecting something from you, and it starts to create this barrier between your personal creativity and the outside world. I think that's why some artists go a little crazy, because they get so attached, almost detached actually, from their emotions and their meditative state of mind and what creativity is founded on. And they start to just over obsess on what other people are thinking or expecting of them. And we see this how often do we see this with celebrities, especially young celebrities, how often we see them crash and burn? In a sense, because it's just so much pressure when acting is a form of creativity that they do because they feel passionate about it, or they fell in love with the idea of playing a character and being in that sense of imagination. So there's so many ways that our creativity can be depleted. And so it's important to come back and again, reassess your why, but also give your time, space and yourself a recognition of just being, just setting yourself in this intentional space to quiet down the rest of the world.

Kailee [00:16:55]:

And why am I even talking about this today? Why did I feel so called to make this solo episode about creativity? It's because I've taken a huge step back from social media and it has done wonders for my creativity. I could sit on social media on my feeds for hours. I'm talking my time was probably on the lower spectrum, but still, three and a half hours of time usually is what I would spend scrolling just on Instagram. So I can't imagine what it was on TikTok and Facebook and all the other apps that we have on our phones. But I would get so stuck and I wasn't really feeling comparison, which comparison can be part of it, right? And if you're constantly stuck in this sense of comparing yourself, that's where the impostor monster just consumes you. You just get eaten alive by this idea that I need to be a certain way or somebody else is always going to be better than me, or so on and so forth. There's so many dialogues that can be happening within you for that impostor syndrome. And how do I show up as myself? And how can I be myself? And how can I just simply be successful in the way I want to be successful? Or how can I show up and talk about something that's not directly the way somebody else has done it? Again, that's creativity.

Kailee [00:18:19]:

Your creativity is yours and yours alone, just like your identity is. Just like how you want to show up in the world, how you want to create your own boundaries, your own guidelines to whatever it is you're pursuing. All of that you control. So your creativity is no different. And me taking a huge step back from social media has been such a sigh of relief, and I've been able to replace that time, and this is what I was talking about a minute ago, is replacing that time with a sense of creativity that's channeled through something else. I'm not being creative when I'm consuming, I'm being creative when picked up. I've bought myself a Nintendo Switch, which is so fun. And I've been playing video games again and just being able to be in that creative space is so cool.

Kailee [00:19:14]:

Like, imagine all the creative time and energy that people put into developing these video games and now you as the user, get to play it. Or even reading is a huge sense of creativity that I think we forget about because that whole time while you're reading, you're in another character's mind, you're in another author's mind. And that's so cool. I have a very big imagination, so when I read, I can come up and literally live in another world while I'm reading. It is so cool, so fun. It really is like the equivalent daydreaming for me, and I just enjoy it so much. And it's been such a relief to be able to take some time at the end of my day and read compared to scrolling on TikTok or Instagram and seeing five Tips that you're Doing wrong with your business. And my business has never done better by doing this.

Kailee [00:20:10]:

And I know some people really rely on social media, and that might not be the case for you, but if you are on social media, but you feel like you can't post or you're stuck, it's most likely because your creativity is blocked. And so there's lots of different ways that you can approach your creativity and kind of gain it back. And this is often what I would do my presentations on. So we've already touched on what kind of creativity is, how it's coming in all sorts of forms, genres, sizes, colors, whatever creativity means to you, I want you to take this creativity and just give yourself time and space, even just once a week, to be in that space. Rather it be alone, or if you like to create with someone else and see how it feels to do that compared to sitting on your phone or scrolling social media and just see how doing it once a week. For just a month and see how that time has helped you in some way, shape or form, or how it's helped you get a different insight on how you want to approach things. Rather it be with your creativity in your life or even your business. And again, giving yourself space to be in that flow.

Kailee [00:21:32]:

Being a creative flow is such a fun place to be, and it really should be something us as adults practice as much as we used to when we were kids. And I love seeing the friends of mine that do have kids now and watching them be in their world of imagination and play and be consumed by creative learning. It's just such a magical thing to watch happen. And I think it's a great reminder of how we could learn a lot from that and we can really implement their creativity back into our own lives and how it can just completely transform the way we approach things in life. And so if you're at a space where you're currently struggling, rather it be with the impostor monster, which is a really big one. I'm not creating good enough, I'm not doing enough, I'm not being enough, I'm not knowledgeable enough. This idea of enough has really attached the impostor syndrome and the impostor monster. The reason I call it an imposter monster is because I've detached what my impostor syndrome is from me as a whole.

Kailee [00:22:44]:

I am not my impostor syndrome. I am not my imposter monster. It's a totally different entity of mine, almost like an imaginary friend. So right there, I'm already giving creativity to my impostor syndrome and just acknowledging that, yes, I do have those feelings, but that doesn't make them true. My impostor syndrome is there, but it doesn't mean that the I blank enough. I comparing to so and so and X, Y, and Z. It's not accurate, it's not my truth, it's not what I'm living. And there's always room for growth, especially with creativity.

Kailee [00:23:26]:

You could start now you could start tomorrow, you could start yesterday of whatever you want your creative outlet to be. And right now, I'm trying to teach myself how to bake, and I've never been able to bake really well, and I have been making the most delicious muffins. Oh, my gosh. There was one night I made blueberry muffins, and they were the big ones, and then I had enough batter that I did four little ones. Within 24 hours, I ate seven muffins. Oh, my gosh, it was so many. I just was so excited that I made a I love blueberry muffins. They're my favorite blueberry muffin or favorite blueberry, favorite type of muffin.

Kailee [00:24:09]:

And oh, my gosh, I was just so excited that I was able to bake something. I was like, this is bake from the bakery quality. I was so stoked about it that I just ate a bunch of them within the first 24 hours. But it was so exciting to be in that moment of creativity, even if it was for, like, the 35, 40 minutes that it took to make them. Just that time alone was fun to be in that space and not really have to think about anything else and just be in the process and be hands on and be in the moment. So, the impostor monster, if it's there, if it's really heavy for you, I want you to really find an affirmation for yourself. Rather, you're talking in the mirror or sometimes what I like to do is give myself affirmations. When I'm on walks or I'm sipping my coffee, I am enough.

Kailee [00:25:02]:

My creativity is free to flow. I am creative. I am abundant with creativity. There's so many different affirmations you can take and really sculpt to be your own, no matter what you're feeling like. Even if there's a lot of good creatives out there, I'm one of them. We don't have to one up each other with our creativity. We can all learn and be inspired. And being a creative is being a part of a community, being a part of something so much bigger.

Kailee [00:25:37]:

And there's nothing that I miss more than being in artist school because, oh, my gosh, art school is just the best. To be surrounded by creatives twenty four, seven, and learn from them and see how their minds work and how they had different talents from my own, and that continues to be true. There's always going to be this area where you can learn more and be a part of more. But even if you don't want to expand, your creativity can simply just be you could just be in the moment creating. And with creativity comes this almost special place of confidence as well. And there's so much that can build on those really reaffirming feelings for yourself when it comes to creativity. I'll never forget my sister's in the medical field, and recently, for one of her projects, she had to do something a little bit more artistic. And she would always when she was in middle school and high school, I would draw for her.

Kailee [00:26:38]:

She would be like, hey, this is my project. Can you draw this for me? And I would usually draw for her diagrams or draw for I remember she had to do something on the water system, and I drew a bunch of stuff for the water system for her. But now she's had projects where she started to draw, and she drew, like, Winnie the Pooh and some Disney characters. And what's so funny about that is that's exactly how I started. I had a Winnie the Pooh poster in my bedroom growing up that had Tigger and Pooh on it, and I would look at it above my bed and try to draw it at a smaller scale. And that's how I got started. And my dad teaching me how to draw all the Disney VHS covers to all of just, you know, whatever you want to try or do, it's available to you. And I want to remind you, too, that not everything and this is a huge reminder for myself, not everything creatively has to become a business that's like such oh, my God, that's such a big one.

Kailee [00:27:41]:

And if you're someone like me who could run on a million ideas for businesses in one day, I've had to reel it back and tell myself, I can do this and not have to make money off of it. I can make my own jean jackets and not have to make money off of it. I can design invitations for people and not have to make money off of it. And just being able to remind myself that I can keep my creativity to myself and I can keep these moments for myself, and it doesn't always have to be shared. I don't have to post it on social media. I don't have to be posting it on my stories every single day. I don't have to be required to do any of those things, and you don't either. Whatever your creativity and your space for that looks like, honor that and be a part of that.

Kailee [00:28:40]:

Now, if you are turning it into a business and making money for it, that is incredible. It's super exciting. There's nothing I love more than being a creative and being able to make money off of it and also laugh at all the people that said that being an artist was going to put me in a starving mentality, and I'd never make any money off of it. And now I'm making an abundance of money doing what I do, and it is so satisfying to be in that space and seriously make my dreams come true. But I just knew that this was like a reminder. It was a reminder I needed for myself today. But I think it's a reminder that maybe you needed as well of just coming back to your creativity and moments of creativity, rather, no matter how small or how big, but just allowing yourself to get in a space. That doesn't have any expectation and you can just freely flow with it and channel whatever it is you want to channel in that moment.

Kailee [00:29:41]:

And it is a magical thing to be a part of. It is so grounding to be able to be in that space again. And also just creativity is such a beautiful thing. Like, beautiful and magical are the top two words that are just screaming at me right now. Because it really is being a creative is it's undescribable the amount of things that you could do with your creativity. And so I hope just talking through this and sharing that I've been in the space of creative block and I've struggled with impostor syndrome, and I've been the one to lose myself to the expectation of creativity or feel like I can't be creative this week, I'm burnt out. That's an okay thing. If you're having a busy week and you can't find any time for creativity, that's okay.

Kailee [00:30:37]:

You have next week as well. It doesn't have to be this on high demand thing that you do. Twenty four seven. So I have a creativity guided meditation that I have on YouTube, and this is something that I've recorded and put together for my vision board socials, which will be already coming up in three months, which is crazy to think about. I do it every single year in December. And it's a space for you to come and just be with other amazing, like minded individuals who are pursuing their passions or just wanting to feel some support from, like, a magical community. And we do a meditation, which I write out myself, which is so fun. That's a totally different space of creativity that I've been able to channel.

Kailee [00:31:28]:

And we go through the meditation and then we create vision boards and talk about what we really want to envision for the next year and really see come to life for ourselves individually and as a business, if you're a business owner. So if you're ever feeling stuck, a creativity guided meditation is always a really good place to start, and it's a great thing to listen to just if you want to start your day. It's very calming. I think it's like ten minutes long, and it just really gets you in the space to be like, okay, I can tackle this today, or I feel grounded again, or I can open up my creativity and let it be a part of my day or be just a part of my life. You can let creativity be a part of your life. Another thing that I want to leave off on for this episode is talking about the things that are holding you back from being creative or showing up and creating content. Because I know it feels weird, I know it feels uncomfortable to show up on a video and. Talk or to post your stuff on TikTok or YouTube or any form of social media.

Kailee [00:32:47]:

I know I am sitting here by myself in my living room, looking at my microphone, talking to my microphone, and I'm sure if any bystander just walked by and saw me just talking, but there was no one else around. I'm essentially just talking to myself. I mean, I'm of course, keeping you in mind. So in my perfect little imagination, you and I are sitting down and having a cup of coffee together, and I'm just blabbing on about creativity and how it's such a powerful thing, but at the same time, it is kind of awkward. It's uncomfortable to work through your creative outlets and it's kind of getting into your groove of things. When I first started this podcast to Now, I'm a completely different person, and I feel way more comfortable in front of the microphone. And it's the same for my branding. My skills have oh, my gosh, the evolution of my branding skills have been monumental since I was in school to now, and my understanding of what branding is and my learning still isn't done.

Kailee [00:33:52]:

And that's a really powerful thing to know, too, is you can show up and it can feel funky and you can still go through it, and the learning is never going to end. And I think that's a really magical thing. I don't think our learning ever should. One thing my grandpa always told me was that your education is one thing that nobody can ever take away from you. And I want to support that with also, your creativity is something that nobody can take away from you. And that's a really cool thing. It's a really cool thing to know that your education, your mind, your creativity, the dialogue within you, nobody can take that from you. They can't take your soul.

Kailee [00:34:37]:

They can't know your foundations, your muchness. I get that from Alice in Wonderland where he's like, used to be much. I think he's like, you used to be much muchier, or something like that. You've lost your muchness. And creativity is just something that can take you a really long way, and it can be this really healing space as well. Rather, you're transforming your emotions or you're simply just trying something new. I think that's the best part, too, is, like I said, simple, craft. Nights is like a great place to get started and just be in that space.

Kailee [00:35:19]:

And the more you do it, the more you start to enjoy it and take that pressure off of you, of, oh, my gosh. There's these expectations, and especially if you're starting that business for the first time, or maybe you've been in it for a while and you're in a rut, or you're feeling like you don't know what to do next, or you feel like you're losing your creativity. Because I've had very many moments like that where I feel like I'm losing my creativity. I feel like I'm not where I used to be creatively and it's just something I need to remind myself of. Like, well, what do I need to get back to that mentality? What do I need to get back to my base root of creativity? And there's always something I need, rather it be more sleep or more food and less coffee or maybe I just need some time away from my computer or I need to go on a walk and move my body. There's always something that's being communicated of coming back to creativity and I just want to let you know again that you are creative. We've always been creative. It's this really magical part of who we are as humans and it's something that we could pursue in whatever type of outlet that we want to and to grow with it, especially as a creative business owner.

Kailee [00:36:42]:

Just know that there's always room for learning and improvement and readjusting and your creativity is never ending, just like your learning is and like this life and change and really being able to embrace that and know that it's like a part of you and what makes everything amazing about you, who you are. So thank you for spending some time with me. I've been thinking about this episode nonstop because I've had many conversations recently about the challenges of being a creative or being a creative business owner and not knowing where to start or feeling cringey when you do start or feeling like you're not good enough or feeling these underlying expectations and then getting burnout and never looking back or wanting to start something and then never following through. Because one thing or another. But if you really put your mind to it, you are unstoppable and your creativity is just as much there to support you as anything else is. So I hope this inspires you to take some time to either go listen to the creative meditation which I have linked in the description below, or maybe go out and buy yourself something crafty to work on. I am not as good at drawing as I used to be, so that's one of my new creative outlets that I'm really trying. I bought myself a cute little sketchbook and some fun pens so I can kind of get back into and getting back into the groove of it.

Kailee [00:38:20]:

And whatever your creativity looks like, rather it's being in the kitchen or finger painting whatever feels called to you and you want to be in that space or reading, just being able to channel that again and remind yourself that you're worthy of having creativity with or without acknowledgment from other people or income based off of it. And it's just so important to recognize when we do need to take that time, to just be in the creative flow compared to feeling like we're forced to be there all the time. So I hope this episode set with you well, I'm so excited to be recording again. I felt a little rusty today. Again, this is another form of creativity, and it's been a while since I've sat down and I've been recording and I'm working on getting new guests. So if you're a listener and you would like to be a guest, feel free to reach out to me on Instagram at eclecticdesigns Co.
