have your Bibles or you have your scripture journals this morning, uh go ahead and turn there. 00:01:23.200 --> 00:01:28.000 What we've seen so far is that Paul has been like radically changed by the gospel. 00:01:28.159 --> 00:01:31.760 If you know anything about Paul, know anything about the Bible, then you probably know this to be true. 00:01:31.840 --> 00:01:37.840 He's been radically changed by the gospel in such a way that everything is different, everything is changed for him, everything's different. 00:01:38.000 --> 00:01:43.200 The gospel isn't just a cherry on top for Paul's life, it is everything to him. 00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:54.879 And as a result, he's been urging the church in Philippi, and he's been urging us as well through his writing that we would give more weight to the gospel, that we would really give it the appropriate weight in our lives. 00:01:55.040 --> 00:02:04.959 There's a question that uh Michael DeFazio asks in his next Ozark Christian College next level study when it comes to this text in particular, and I think it's worth us kind of meditating on. 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:16.000 So I want to just give you this question right now to start start our time, and I I want you to I want to urge you not to rush into an answer for it, but I want you to meditate on it as we're as we're going throughout this time. 00:02:16.080 --> 00:02:22.719 It's this this way in Philippians chapter 3. 00:02:44.719 --> 00:02:47.199 That seems like he's wrapping up his letter in a bit. 00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:56.319 Like it seems like he's landing the plane, it seems like he's bringing everything to a close, and he's still harping on this same message, this message of joy, of rejoicing in the Lord. 00:02:56.400 --> 00:03:02.080 Like our joy is found in him and in his gospel and what he has done, and he's still writing about these same things. 00:03:02.159 --> 00:03:05.520 But then Paul's tone abruptly shifts here. 00:03:05.680 --> 00:03:10.080 It's kind of like I don't know if you've been in a conversation or if you have somebody in your life that you immediately think of. 00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:14.080 Whenever you get into a conversation with them and conversation like that, or you get in a conversation, you know, you accidentally open the door because you thought it was your neighbor, but it's a salesperson, right? 00:03:32.159 --> 00:03:35.680 And then they say something along the lines of, while I've got you here, you know what I'm saying? 00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:39.599 Like it's and then you know the conversation's about to double in length, at least. 00:03:39.759 --> 00:03:41.840 You know, like it's just gonna get way longer. 00:03:41.919 --> 00:03:47.120 And you can tell Paul's a preacher here because he says finally, and he's want to do for the rest of our time this morning is just kind of walk through verse by verse a little bit and see what Paul's trying to tell us, see what he's trying to communicate in these 11 verses right here. 00:03:58.960 --> 00:04:05.759 What we're gonna see is we're gonna see Paul's warning, and we're gonna see Paul's garbage, and we're gonna see Paul's treasure. 00:04:05.919 --> 00:04:08.240 Look with me first, Paul's warning in verses two and three. 00:04:08.319 --> 00:04:21.519 It says, Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh, for we are the circumcision who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh. 00:04:21.839 --> 00:04:29.439 It's interesting in this passage because Paul is calling out a problem that is like nowhere else in the book of Philippians. 00:04:29.600 --> 00:04:35.199 Like he's not, he's not, that he's not mentioning this problem as to be present in this church anywhere else. 00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:39.839 It's almost as if Paul's addressing a problem that's not yet present in the Philippian church. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:45.360 That's a that's a potential, that he's addressing something that's not happening, but he knows it's happening elsewhere. 00:04:45.439 --> 00:05:03.759 You know, Paul's well traveled and he has planted a lot of churches and he's heard a lot of stories and he's and he's gotten reports from a lot of different people about what might be happening here, and it seems to be the problem that that Paul's addressing here is hey, watch out for the people that are infiltrating your church that are saying you need to earn your way to heaven. 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:05.839 You need to earn your own salvation. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.240 Like you're only saved by your good works. 00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:13.920 Like he's a he's addressing it using these three words, and he kind of uses these three words almost like tongue in cheek. 00:05:14.079 --> 00:05:18.480 Like he's almost like he's on on the attack here when he says, watch out for the dogs. 00:05:18.720 --> 00:05:32.639 The dogs were like, it's not like, you know, 21st century uh United States, like how we how we treat our dogs here, you know, like that they're like basically uh extra family members, you know, they're gonna be buried next to us in our in our graves and stuff. 00:05:32.720 --> 00:05:34.319 You know, it's not it's not that level. 00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:38.079 The dogs were the lowest of the low, like the scum, the scum of the earth. 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:41.439 There were there was like nothing, nothing more unclean. 00:05:41.600 --> 00:05:52.319 And a lot of times those inside the church who were so concerned with their good deeds would refer to those outside the church, those sinners, as dogs. 00:05:52.560 --> 00:05:56.800 And so Paul is flipping this on his head and said, Hey, I'm not talking about those outside the church. 00:05:56.879 --> 00:06:04.879 The threat's not outside the church, the threat is inside the church, those who are trying to say, you earn your way to salvation, you earn your way to God because of your good work. 00:06:05.279 --> 00:06:05.839 Watch out for them. 00:06:05.920 --> 00:06:07.600 He says, Watch out for the evildoers. 00:06:07.759 --> 00:06:25.360 Because of Paul's understanding of grace, he's saying that those who point to these works of the law as righteousness, he's like, like they are they are the ones who are actually doing evil, pulling people away from the heart of God, pulling people away from his grace, like they are they are the evil workers. 00:06:25.439 --> 00:06:28.000 And then he says, watch out for those mutilators of the flesh. 00:06:28.160 --> 00:06:37.279 What we don't see in our text in English is what Paul's doing in the original language that he's writing in in Greek, because he's actually doing a play on words. 00:06:37.360 --> 00:06:41.680 The Greek word for mutilation and circumcision like sound the same. 00:06:41.920 --> 00:06:46.079 They're very, they're very similar, but they carried completely different connotation. 00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:53.680 Like these people that would have been like works-based righteousness people inside the church, they would have called themselves the circumcision. 00:06:53.759 --> 00:06:54.800 We are the circumcision. 00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:58.560 Like we are the ones who are set apart, who are called like called by God. 00:06:58.720 --> 00:07:00.079 We're the descendants of Abraham. 00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:04.399 We are like the true Hebrew people, like we are the true Jews here. 00:07:04.480 --> 00:07:10.000 And he's calling them out and saying, You call yourself the circumcision, but you're actually just mutilating the flesh. 00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:12.079 Like it's not an act of worship at all. 00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:21.680 And what Paul's really getting down to is as he gives this warning, he says, Hey, look out for those who heap this burden of the law on top of your head in order that you may be right before God. 00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:26.000 Like to say, this is necessary for you to be loved by God. 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:29.600 Look out for those who practice the law but haven't submitted their heart to it. 00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:34.319 Like, look out for those who are circumcised in the flesh and not circumcised in the heart. 00:07:34.480 --> 00:07:43.040 Look out for those whose ultimate confidence is in who they themselves are and what they themselves have done. 00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:45.279 Like, watch out for those people. 00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:48.399 And it's interesting, Paul goes on a tangent as he often does. 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:53.360 It's like Paul's anticipating a response from those people that he's calling out. 00:07:53.600 --> 00:07:57.120 As he goes into this next verse, he's he's anticipating their rebuttal. what he's getting ready to answer, and this is what he does. 00:08:05.279 --> 00:08:09.199 And in verses four through six, he talks about this is Paul's garbage. 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:11.120 Paul's garbage right here in four through six. 00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:18.560 He says, Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also, if anyone thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more. 00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:32.159 And listen to this list circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, as to the law, a Pharisee, as to zeal, a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law, blameless. 00:08:32.399 --> 00:08:35.120 There's these seven different things that Paul lists out here. 00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:38.879 And like four, the first four are all kind of like his by birth. 00:08:39.039 --> 00:08:39.840 You see what he says. 00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:41.360 He says circumcised on the eighteenth. 00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:42.799 This was the on the eighth day. 00:08:42.879 --> 00:08:45.360 This is the this is the true Jewish way. 00:08:45.440 --> 00:08:47.919 This is what was commanded to Abraham. 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:50.399 This is what was passed down from generation to generation. 00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:51.840 This is how they were to do things. 00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:55.039 He says, I'm from the people of Israel, the race of Israel. 00:08:55.200 --> 00:08:56.559 This is my, these are my people. 00:08:56.639 --> 00:09:02.720 I'm from the tribe of Benjamin, the one tribe that remained loyal to Judah whenever they split, ten and two. 00:09:02.960 --> 00:09:05.840 And the first king of was from the tribe of Benjamin. 00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:10.639 Actually, that's probably where Paul originally got his name, was from King Saul. 00:09:10.799 --> 00:09:13.840 That's what that was his name before he came to encounter the Lord. 00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:20.320 I bet in the tribe of Benjamin there's a lot of little Sauls running around because they were pretty proud of this first king that was from their tribe. 00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:22.480 And then he says, a Hebrew of Hebrews. 00:09:22.639 --> 00:09:25.600 Like I have real, authentic Hebrew parents. 00:09:25.679 --> 00:09:28.399 I'm not like this half-blooded Hebrew. 00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:32.159 I'm I'm not scattered, I'm I'm true-blooded, I'm a Hebrew. 00:09:32.240 --> 00:09:40.960 And then all these things by his birthright, and then he starts moving into like all these other things he could boast in that are really all about what he has done, what he has earned. 00:09:41.120 --> 00:09:44.399 He says, as to the law, I'm a Pharisee, I'm a separated one. 00:09:44.639 --> 00:09:47.440 I've been through all of those tests and that education. 00:09:47.679 --> 00:09:58.639 I've done all the right things to be included in these groups of people, as to zeal, like one of these like highest virtues of a Jew following in Jesus' day. 00:09:58.720 --> 00:10:00.080 I'm a persecutor of the church. 00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:03.519 Like I can't, there's not very many people who are more zealous than I was. 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:07.120 And then he says, as to righteousness under the law, I'm blameless. 00:10:07.279 --> 00:10:11.840 Like even whenever I've sinned, I've gone through all the right processes to be made pure again. 00:10:11.919 --> 00:10:13.440 I'm blameless and I'm pure. 00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:22.399 Paul, Paul's boasting, it comes from a this combination of things that he was born into and things that he has worked hard for. 00:10:22.559 --> 00:10:27.120 And Paul's like sharing kind of his testimony here to the Philippian church. 00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:35.679 He's sharing his testimony, but not as a way to brag, but as a way to say, hey, I understand the temptation that you're facing. 00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:38.159 And here's the temptation I think that we all face. saying? 00:11:30.320 --> 00:11:34.320 Like we could boast in our community, or we could boast in our family, you know, in our upbringing. 00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:39.279 We could, and similar to Paul, we could put confidence in the things that we have worked hard for, right? 00:11:39.440 --> 00:11:48.320 Our achievements and our jobs and our success and our possessions or things, or even like trips as loss. 00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:13.039 Like it's an economic term, right? 00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:18.960 Like they would all seem to be gaining interest and gaining gaining profit for me, but they're all a loss when it all comes down to it. 00:14:19.039 --> 00:14:23.840 He says, indeed, I count everything as a loss for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ. 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:27.919 I count it all as rubbish in order that I may gain Christ. 00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:32.240 That word rubbish is it carries the meaning of garbage or dung. 00:14:32.320 --> 00:14:36.559 It's actually like a only time it's used in the New Testament. 00:14:42.480 --> 00:14:51.120 Paul's reaching for a word to describe just how bad what the best the world has to offer is in comparison to what Jesus has to
