As mental illness and drug use impact our communities, librarians find themselves taking on the role of social workers. In Seattle, the central branch in downtown employs four social services librarians who help people seeking information about shelter, food and other social services. Seattle Times staff reporter Esmy Jimenez joins the Chino Y Chicano to talk about this role in Seattle libraries and local transit services. Jimenez is part of the SeattleTimes Mental Health Initiative. She reported on the move into social work in a recent article for the Initiative.
