WOFOYO SHORT: Why God Wants You to Imitate Him

C-Dub and Bones Season 5

Have you ever wondered why God gave us certain commandments? What if they're not just rules to follow, but invitations to become more like Him?

While exploring Exodus 20 and the Ten Commandments, I noticed something profound about the Sabbath commandment. God doesn't just tell us to rest—He explains that we should rest because He rested. This simple pattern reveals a powerful truth: we are made in God's image and designed to imitate Him. When we follow His commands, we're not just obeying rules; we're being transformed into His likeness.

Jesus himself said, "If you've seen me, you've seen the Father"—a game-changing perspective on God's character. Scripture describes Christ as "the express image" of God, and we are called to be "conformed to the image of Christ." This creates a spiritual connectivity where God's love, power, goodness, judgment, mercy, and beauty flow through us as we align with His nature.

Too often, we approach our faith with a checklist mentality: "I've done this, avoided that—I must be good." But God's intent goes deeper. Even the physical structures in Scripture—the tabernacle and temple—were designed as earthly representations of heavenly realities. Like those sacred spaces, we are living temples where God's Spirit dwells, meant to reflect His kingdom.

Perhaps most intriguing is this concept: if God is a Creator who made us in His image, then we are designed to be creators too—"mini creators" participating in His ongoing work. When reading Scripture, especially challenging Old Testament passages, don't get lost in the details. Instead, ask: "Lord, what's Your intent? How are You trying to change me through this?" The answer often reveals God's transformative purpose.

Challenge yourself to look beyond religious routine and discover how God is shaping you into His image. Get in the Word for yourself—and watch how it changes everything.

Speaker 1:

Hey everybody, welcome to another Wofo, yo Short. This is C-Dub. I was going over some things earlier today, had a great night last night and got up today, picked some coffee, a little bit of breakfast and got in the Word for myself and I went back and got into Exodus 20 again Ten Commandments Just keep going back to that and started expounding on some things, and the one thing that stuck out to me today is this it is Exodus 20, where God is giving Moses the Ten Commandments, but the commandment of remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. You're not supposed to do any labor on that day. But then he gives the reason. He says for in six days the Lord created the earth and on the seventh day he rested. And it reminded me of this principle that we are made in the image of God and what God is trying to do here in this principle. I'm getting ready to point out a couple other examples of this. He made us in his image. He's trying to get us to imitate him and therefore become closer to him. One of the things that Bones talks about that was a game changer for him is just realizing this phrase that Jesus said if you've seen me, you've seen the father, total game changer for how we view the father, and we know we're supposed to be conformed to the image of Christ over in Hebrews, first chapter, verses two through four. In the last days he has spoken to us, talk about the Father has spoken to us by his Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds. Who, being the brightness of his glory and the express image exact copy is what that means of his person. And upholding all things by the brightness of his glory and the express image. Exact copy is what that means of his person. And upholding all things by the word of his power. When he had by himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels as he has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. So it says right here that Jesus is the express image of the Father.

Speaker 1:

Over in 1 Corinthians there are several different places throughout Paul's writings. Paul is big on being conformed into the image of Christ and therefore being conformed to the image of God. 1 Corinthians, 11, 7, when he's talking about head coverings, says a man indeed ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God. So we are a reflection of that. And then later it goes on. He said the woman is the glory of man. That fact right there, that he says it like that, means that there's connectivity, there's a connectedness and therefore we need to align ourselves properly so that there is the proper connectedness and so that his love and his power and his goodness is flowing through us, his judgment, his mercy, his beauty.

Speaker 1:

We are on a journey and a lot of times we see commandments, we see do this, don't do that. We get the check the box idea and we have this mentality of okay, I've done this, I've done that, I've done this. I must be a good person. The intent is to become closer to him, is to become closer to him, but also to be molded, conformed, transformed into his image, because that will be a witness for others, that will draw others to be conformed and transformed into his image. And I just wanted to challenge you Don't look, especially if you're getting in the word for yourself and you start reading this old Testament.

Speaker 1:

Ask yourself this why Some of them, even like the Jewish rabbis, go. We have no idea why God did it this way, but this is the commandment and we're following it. If you look, when I was reading the book a couple years ago on sacred architecture and the ratios between the sun and the moon and all the heavenly bodies and all this that were incorporated into all these structures, including our cathedrals, our Christian cathedrals, these structures, including our cathedrals, our Christian cathedrals, there's this idea of observing the heavens, observing what's going on in the spiritual realm, and trying to get that to reflect here on earth. The cathedrals, even your old temples, even your pagan temples, the idea behind them was to create a representation of the heavenly slash, spiritual realm. In their case it was just second heaven instead of third heaven, like what we're doing here in Christianity. But it is to provide a representation and this is what the tabernacle was all about, this is what the temple was all about of God's kingdom, of his plan, and so, just like you know, we're tabernacles, we're living temples. The spirit of God resides within us. Examples the Spirit of God resides within us.

Speaker 1:

So just ask yourself it's so easy to get bogged down in the minutiae in some of the Old Testament writings, especially the Torah writings, and when you get into the genealogies and things like that, but ask yourself, lord, what's your intent? How are you trying to change us? What is the purpose? And a lot of times it's when Jesus walked the earth as the express image of me. Here's what he did. So I can show that this is my nature. I'm transforming you into my nature and I'm just going to leave off with one of the more powerful phrases that I've ever heard.

Speaker 1:

There was a guy named Chris Bruce, out of Grand Rapids, michigan, and he once said during the service he goes you know we are. If God is a creator and he made man in his image, then he created us to be creators, little mini creators, and I'm going to leave you with that. So have a good weekend, get in the word for yourself. Wofo Yo and do it. Hey folks, thanks for listening. We hope this challenges you and causes you to grow. You can always check us out at wofoyoorg and do it.
