Hey everybody, welcome to another edition of the WoeFoYo podcast with C Dub and Bones. We are going to be freshly digging into some word today and we are going to get into Acts 10. Let's start at Acts 10. There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, centurion of what was called the Italian regiment, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household. He gave alms generously to the people and prayed to God. Always About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, cornelius. When he observed him, he was afraid and said what is it, lord? So he said unto him your prayers and your alms have come up before a memorial before God. Now send men to Joppa and send for Simon, whose surname is Peter. He is lodging with Simon, a tanner whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do. And when the angel spoke to him and had departed, cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier from among those who waited on him continually.
Speaker 1:The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, peter went up on the housetop to pray about the six hours. We're talking about noon here. Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat. But while they made ready, he fell into a trance and saw heaven open and an object like a great sheet, bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to earth. In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things and birds of the air. And a voice came to him Rise, peter, kill and eat. But Peter said Not so, lord, for I have never eaten anything common or unclean. And a voice spoke to him again the second time what God has cleansed you must not call common. This was done three times and the object was taken up to heaven again. So lo and behold, as soon as he comes down, there are the servants of the centurion. And so he agrees to go with him. We'll pick it up at verse 24.
Speaker 1:And the following day they entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them and he called together his relatives. We'll pick it up at verse 24. I myself am also a man. And as he talked with him he went in and found many who had come together. Then he said to them you know how unlawful it is for a Jewish man to keep company with or go to one of another nation, but God has shown me that I should not call any man common or unclean. Therefore I came without objection as soon as I was sent for I asked them for what reason have you sent me? So Cornelius tells them about the angel and Peter opens his mouth in verse 34.
Speaker 1:Peter opens his mouth and says In truth, I perceive that God sent to the children of Israel preaching through Jesus Christ, he the Lord of all, that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil. For God was with him and we are witnesses of these things which he did, both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. Him God raised up on the third day and showed him openly, not to all the people but to witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who ate and drank with him after he arose from the dead, and he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that it is he who is ordained by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him, all the prophets witness that through his name, whoever believes in him shall receive remission of sins. So he has to have an altar call right.
Speaker 1:While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy spirit fell upon all those who heard him and those of the circumcision who believe were astonished, as many as came with peter, because the gift of the holy spirit had been poured out on the gentiles also, for they heard them speak with tongues and magnify god. Then peter answered can anyone forbid water? That these should not be baptized who have received the holy Spirit just as we have, and he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days. Changes the world right here. I mean literally. This right here changes the world as much as what Jesus does in his life and burial and resurrection and is still doing, which is one of the things he's doing here through his spirit. This incident right here is a game changer. Who knows, if he wasn't obedient to that mission, who knows where you and I would be bones?
Speaker 2:Yeah, there, there's a lot going on here. Um, just right off the top. I mean, this is there's a lot of things going on. Um for one, for those who who like to establish doctrine. Uh, you know as you should. You know who like to establish doctrine. You know as you should. You know and talk how we must repent and do these things and preach a gospel of repentance and things like that. The word repent is never mentioned right here, and we have salvation and baptism of the Holy Ghost all at the same time, but yet Peter never mentions the need for repentance, mostly because repentance is a product of the gospel, not necessarily a requirement for. Anyway, that's a topic for another day. Just for those who really get hell-bent on, you didn't preach the right gospel, brother. You didn't tell them they need to repent. In this case, a Gentile doesn't know he needs to repent because repent is a religious word.
Speaker 1:Well, I would take it a little bit differently, not necessarily disagreeing, but there's one thing that's said in here that when Peter's preaching he goes, when he's relaying what happens, when he's relaying what happens he talks about. We continued with him. Basically, god anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. Before that he said that word, you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached. Well, which baptism was that? As a baptism of repentance, for remission of sins. So he ain't got to address it. John's already addressed that way back in the day. Like Cornelius, you done been around.
Speaker 1:If, if, we, if, if if an angel has sent me, has sent you to me and has sent me to you, and god's all in this, we don't have to get down with all the. Did you, number one?
Speaker 1:do this, number two he said so let's get down to brass tacks here. Exactly here's. Here's what's going on. That's one of those things that the ABCs of salvation like. You have to do them in that order or the Romans road. And you know, if somebody gets saved and develops that relationship with Jesus Christ because of the Romans road and there are people that have man praise God Every time, it happens. To make a doctrine out of the Romans road is wasteful and harmful.
Speaker 2:Right and and and that's where. That's kind of where we're at here by the time. By the time Peter shows up on the scene all that, that, that sowing of the seed, the watering, the cultivating, all that's been done he's showing up to reap the word of God. But anyway, that's just kind of one thing that's always stuck out to me there. This is where the Gentiles start to receive the salvation. You know the salvation. This is kind of where we first see it.
Speaker 2:Um, another thing that I saw here I don't think I've seen it until tonight as you were reading it um, now, we've mentioned before I'll take a step back we mentioned before that you know god will never ask you to do anything contrary to his word until he does. Because when he tells Peter to kill and eat all these unclean foods, that could have been very difficult for Peter because according to the Mosaic law, the law of Moses and all the other rules that come about for dietary requirements and stuff like that, this would have been very much against what Peter knows as the law. This would have been going against God's word to do this, and that's kind of his hesitation here. Wait a minute, this is unclean stuff. I'm not supposed to eat that. But there's a deeper meaning here, and that's not to say that we should just run out and do stuff against God's word, because, well, there's always a deeper meaning. That's not the case In this case.
Speaker 2:There was and this is the part that I want to hit on for just a second, because I think this is the part I just recognized tonight what that sheet represents and it, coming down from the heavens, and the unclean stuff is. Basically we have a picture of all things that were not allowed is now being allowed. This is God's word and God himself now opening himself up to the Gentiles. The Gentiles are the unclean things here. In this vision, that word sheet is also translated as linen cloth, something that we often recognize as a symbol of righteousness, even though it doesn't say it's white in this instance. So there's this picture here that God is saying I'm now opening myself up to the Gentiles. The Gentiles are now going to be clean, because I say they are.
Speaker 1:I also saw something about that four corners and that's representative of the earth as well, Representative of the earth, exactly. Representative of the earth, Exactly. So we're going to go into all there. Here's what's been bugging me, and I mean this. This pops up out of the blue. Uh, earlier today went and got me a little break time, looked it up and it's still bugging me, and I ain't going to claim to have all the answers. We're kind of digging through this here.
Speaker 2:The order I'll caveat that you dropped this on me about seven minutes ago.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I have no idea. This is when we had to record this week and this is just what popped up. Yeah, and the phrase arise Peter, kill and eat. Oh, he told them to eat them animals. Not what he said. He didn't say go down to Bucky's, get you some brisket. This is something you grew up on a farm. We both grew up in a little bit of hunting. If you were, if you were a guy down where we lived, you grew up hunting. Is it different eating something that you have killed as opposed to going to the store?
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, I think most men consider it to be different.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and and again, if you're, if you're on a farm, you don't even have to hunt it, it's there. But also you've done, poured some things into that animal that you've harvested, that you, I mean, you fed it. You know you've done depending on what animal it had probably done custard a time or two, because animals can be frustrating, but there's some involvement there and this is an action thing. And he's saying this to a violent man arise, peter, kill and eat. But this, there is what stands out to me and again, I'm not claiming I have the full revelation of this in any means, but it ain't leaving me alone. So there we are Kill and eat is an action. It is a very, very active principle. He's getting dinner prepared for him while he has this vision.
Speaker 2:He has the option of not having to kill to eat.
Speaker 1:He's getting dinner prepared for him. While he has this vision, yeah, he has the option of not having to kill to eat. But the command in this vision he's speaking to Peter and of course, peter didn't go and kill any actual people. Worst he did was lop off an ear ear, and even that was countermanded. St Peter's knife works, but it does speak that when Peter, when it gets down to it, there's something in him that is he's a man, he'll get dead up in your stuff and he will. He's a man, he'll get dead up in your stuff. He will be active.
Speaker 1:Now, if he's not being led by the Lord, he can also really quick, he can shy away really quick. There's some passions in Peter that you see, that it's either all or nothing. Have you ever had friends and I have some good friends that like this it's either all or nothing. And man, you ever had friends? And I have some good friends that like this and they're all heart, and if their heart's in it, you have no better people on your side. If their heart's not in it, they'll be your friend, but you might as well not have them around, because it's just very, very obvious if their heart's in it or not Doesn't make them bad people, just the way they're made up where they are.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but it really stands out to me that you know, we have the same going into all the world and preach the good news, and here we have Peter not just going into all world making disciples, those are all action commands. You know, terry, here in Jerusalem is a command. It is an action command but it's saying, hey, be patient, you don't march until I say march. So we now have this order to go kill and eat, and of course we don't kill people. Yeah, it's figurative. Um, this is not what this vision does not mean the reversal of the Jewish dietary law. It's not it.
Speaker 1:Whether something's kosher or not, I believe it's called kashrut. This is not the very much you might hear that preach. There was some permission given to the church in Antioch by James and the elders after much debate, and there was that. But it just brings to mind this idea, man, of a passive church, the passive believer. This is just totally against God's intent from the get-go. It's not that you go out there and rush in a reckless and do things stupidly, but it also means that when it's go time, it's go time.
Speaker 2:Yeah, this word kill is also the same word it's go time, it's go time. Yeah, this, this word, kill is also the same word that's used for sacrifice in the Greek. So there, when we look at at what it means to sacrifice, especially when we're talking about sacrificing animals, there is a certain level of violence. That's that's there, that's required. It could also be considered aggression. So, yeah, we are. I think God does require us to be a little aggressive in the way that we act. Now we've got to be careful, because when we talk about being aggressive as Christians, that aggression looks different than what it does to be aggressive. It looks different than what worldly aggression looks like it is not harmful.
Speaker 1:It is not mean.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's not harmful, it's not mean. Matter of fact. If you want to see what it is, all you got to do is look at Paul as he starts to watch Paul as he as he conducts himself on his missionary journeys and especially as he defines what love is. So if you want to know what worldly aggression looks like, then it's just the opposite of how Paul describes love. Love is patient. Well, worldly aggression is not patient, it's impulsive. Love is kind Well, worldly aggression is the opposite. Love is hateful, it's harsh. So we have the Bible defines for us those things.
Speaker 2:But yeah, I would agree there is a certain level of aggression that comes with being a Christian. But we've got to make sure we properly define it and walk it out. And I think that's probably where my flesh struggles, because my flesh knows what worldly aggression is. My flesh is very comfortable with worldly aggression and my flesh has seen a lot of demonstration in worldly aggression, so I know what that is. It's very easy to imitate and emulate. Now, when it comes to righteous aggression, that's where I'm not so good at, and a lot of it. I mean I guess I could go out on a limb and say, well, I just haven't seen much good demonstration of it, so I don't really I haven't seen it modeled a whole lot. However, I can't lean on that crutch because Jesus has modeled it for me in the New Testament, so I do have an excellent model of it. I don't have a crutch to lean on when it comes to that.
Speaker 1:As someone who has not been involved necessarily with the particular utensils, you've had to use the implements but has nonetheless been involved in their share of aggression that had to be used for situations.
Speaker 1:I can tell you this, you know, the best thing there there are some spiritual parallels here is you can't get geeked up. That's the initial thing. But when you go in you have to breathe, and if you can maintain your breath, you can maintain your head. Now, what does that mean? Well, the Holy Spirit is there to lead you and guide you, and as long as you are inhaling and exhaling and keeping that thing under control, there is a high probability that you can still function. As long as you don't especially pass that initial adrenaline dump. And when everything hits the fan and it wasn't always that way with me, I had to get accustomed to that, I had to train is what I had to do to get to where that initial adrenaline dump wasn't? Oh my God Cause, guess, get to where that initial adrenaline dump wasn't. Oh my God Cause, guess what happens after that initial adrenaline dump. Kind of like what happened with Peter. You're ready to cut somebody's ear off and then some little girl's chasing you away making fun of you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, always, always breathe.
Speaker 1:It's very important. So, if you can breathe, and the spiritual parallel is make sure you're in contact and being within the limits, the parameters that are given, especially in my situation, when we have to do some stuff, there is always a microscope and there are always parameters. If there's use of force and you could end up in a bad place if you go outside those parameters, really, really bad and as much as your emotions might want to get you riled up, those are not your friend. Intensity, that is your friend, but hyperfocus and rage, that is not your friend, because not only will it get you in trouble because you're liable to use force you ain't authorized to use, but it will also keep you from burning yourself out.
Speaker 1:You ever look at some of these MMA guys. It's just really interesting and I'm not going to lie and say I'm a huge MMA fan. I find it interesting how these guys are able to fight. When I first started watching, I thought it was the most boring stuff ever. I want to see me a boxing match, I'm going to see Bruce Lee and all the dramatic, and it's really not like that. However, watching it more, it's a game of who can maintain their aggression, their intensity the longest a lot of times and also be the smartest If you've got two guys that are equally matched as far as ability.
Speaker 1:I wasn't used to the MMA stuff. When it first came out. I'm like, oh, this is going to be like some sort of video game, where this style versus that style. I'm like, oh, ufc first started and then, as things progressed and evolved to the MMA and they brought in that jujitsu, the Brazilian jujitsu, all of a sudden. That was a game changer, because you could have a guy punch out at you. You know he could punch himself out and now he's dog tired and all you got to do is go bloop bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop.
Speaker 1:You know, and having a son, that my oldest boy competes and competes successfully, you know, in his realm competes successfully in jiu-jitsu. It's just always amazing to see him keep his cool but not lose his intensity, yeah.
Speaker 2:And there's some things going on in those fighters that most of us, well, we never see. And one of those big things is they have a plan when they step into that ring. They've done their homework, they've watched the tape, they've watched the film, they've studied their opponent. So they have a plan going in there. So if they can stick to that plan and make adjustments as necessary, then they'll do pretty well. That's not unlike warfare. Yes, you know.
Speaker 2:You conduct your recon, you study your enemy. You know you, you conduct your, your recon, you study your enemy, you study your, your opponent, um, and you formulate a plan based on your findings and then you go to battle with that plan, um, and then you make adjustments as necessary. Um, I'll tell you what. When, usually when for me, when life comes crashing down on me, when life gets a little hard for me, um, and there's times where I wish I was, I would love to go back onto the battlefield, um, there's times I've just I've told the Lord man, send me to that I'd rather be on a mountaintop in Afghanistan right now, I'd rather be back in the jungles of Central America right now, I'd rather be back in this place, because warfare is easy. Shit makes sense, it's. I mean, it's pretty simple.
Speaker 2:But it's not simple because I'm some guru and if you ask any combat veteran they'll tell you it's just easier because you're trained and you've got the experience, and the choices were a lot easier. You just reacted. Well, I have to believe, since that's the way the world is. That's kind of how it is in our flesh. Spiritual warfare is not much different. The more we engage in spiritual warfare, the more we'll want to be a part of it. We engage in spiritual warfare, the more we'll want to be a part of it. I won't say that the more easily it becomes, but the more comfortable we'll become in that environment, and that's really kind of what's going on here. There's a sense of spiritual warfare going on too, with those words get up, arise, kill, kill and eat.
Speaker 1:That's called a battle that's kind of what I started seeing as I molded over is is you're picking right up on it because you're going into enemy territory with all these gentiles, these peoples that were considered unclean. Right, he, he go, I'm cleansing them. But in order to do that, you need to kill a knee. You need to go and do the conquest, you need to go into all the world and make disciples.
Speaker 2:How many, how many centurions homes do you think Peter had been into at this point? None, none, I'm going to gonna, I'm gonna assume something here um cornelius. The bible tells us he was a. He was a, a decent man and everything. And we know from history that a lot of the roman soldiers um sacrificed to gods, many gods. Uh, they, they kind of a lot of them um sacrifice to gods from different religions. They want to cut.
Speaker 2:They kind of wanted to make sure they had all of their boxes checked Be like the dude in the mummy, yeah, Dude in the mummy you know, Uh so uh, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that, Cornelius, there was something right in his heart. Though he was a decent man, he did the right thing because it was the right thing to do in a lot of ways, and that's probably why his heart was pliable and that's why he was receptive to the Holy Spirit. But it wouldn't surprise me if Cornelius was somewhere near to the crucifixion. Wouldn't surprise me at all If he was. Of course he's a centurion here, so he's a, he's in leadership role, and I didn't look up the book of Acts to see when the book of Acts was written, but it's. It wouldn't surprise me if he wasn't a private, if you would, at the time of the crucifixion. But he was somewhere around the crucifixion at that time. He had knowledge of it, and that was that probably softened his heart as he's getting older and has seen and had his eye on the way, the Christian movement and stuff like that.
Speaker 2:So I can imagine, though, Peter having some kind of you know, some standing back a little bit, A little apprehension, A little apprehension, before he goes into this Roman centurion's house, this warrior's house, but yet, you know, God sends an angel to let him know it's going to be okay. You know kind of pumped him up a little bit with some good word. You know, made him feel like a warrior too. Yep, and I think God does that for us as we uh, as we pray through things, as we enter our prayer closet and we ask for guidance, as we seek him out, uh, he has a unique way of kind of uh pumping us up a little bit, uh, giving us some of that spiritual strength and reminding us who we are in him, that we're warriors and that we need to arise, kill and eat and go forth.
Speaker 1:There's this phrase over in Luke, as we're talking about the aggression, and even you know what you're talking about with Peter just now. Luke was talking about when everything's getting ready to hit the fan, when Jerusalem's getting ready to, when it's all getting ready to, when it's all getting ready to go down, and he's saying not a hair of your head should be lost by your patience. In some versions translate it perseverance, possess your souls. Also reminds me of over in 2 Timothy, where Paul tells tells him, god has not given a spirit of fear, but a power of love and a sound mind. The way a lot of versions translate that as self-control, right, so while that's all going down, keep your head about you. Uh, I think about the centurion whose servant Jesus heals. You know Peter was around to witness that, but he never went into his house though. Oh, I'm not worthy. No, he's healed.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they've had enough dealings with the Roman army to know what they're capable of, that's for sure. The crucifixion was a pretty good demonstration of that. But just even on a daily basis, they know what the Roman army is capable of. But this would have been like I said. This would have been one of those times where you know, oh, we would want to throw the brakes on a little bit, you know, and God says no, I need you to go do something. I've determined that now is the time of salvation for this person.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and it's interesting that you're bringing up. You know, hey, what would his rank been at the crucifixion? And all this Because when you look here, here we are in chapter 10. So really you see the church sent out at chapter two, but in the meantime, between time, you see it starting to develop some structure. You really start to see that once Paul is saved, once he has his Damascus Road experience, and as certain things happen, you know there might be 10 years between there and then Might be 10 years between this and that. You have to look it up.
Speaker 1:But I find it interesting that when the criticism gets ready to happen, it's those that didn't get the orders and those that didn't go out. They're always going to be critical of the person that's going out there, because when Peter goes out there and does what he's supposed to be doing, they receive the Holy Spirit, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and it surprises him as much as it does anybody else. Oh, yeah, he's like. Well, I would have loved to see the look on his face. His eyes had to have been like saucers.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah.
Speaker 1:Because, okay, this is happening. You know, he had a vision where his doctrine and the way he thought it was gets messed with. And now he's walking it out and the way he thought it was gets messed with. But you know what you do you roll with it.
Speaker 2:Now you take that I like where you're going with it. Now you take that I like where you're going with it. God's got a unique way of busting your doctrine, you know, busting those rules and traditions that you think are there, that we cling to and we hold on to because we somehow think that's what's going to keep us disciplined, that's what's going to maintain our walk, and none of that will. Then, all of a sudden, you know, your enemy gets baptized in the Holy Ghost. He's like crap. You know what happened here.
Speaker 2:I can imagine Peter taking this back to the other disciples and telling them what happened, Because I imagine some of them probably raised an eyebrow at first. What, Nah, you know, because it's always folks that sit on the sidelines that are going to criticize and judge every play on the gridiron until they get their time in the game. And then they realize okay, now I see why this happened and how this happened. The man in the arena only he knows, you know, whose face is bloody and mired with mud and blood. You know, that's the one that knows.
Speaker 2:So what, a what, a what a change here, change of direction for for the church. We, we thought we were going to preach to um, to israel, and really if you look, keep reading on into chapter 11, you get into Antioch. You see where the church is scattered. There really wasn't a whole lot of structure yet. It's starting to form, but this is the very, very early stages of what we would call, quote-unquote, the church man. What a time to to be preaching and telling people about Jesus. Um, speaking to the very folks who literally had a hand, uh in in in the crucifixion, uh, the Roman army, I think.
Speaker 1:I think we're area where we could wrap it up with that. But you know, just to kind of rehash, man, maintain your intensity, Be default aggressive, but not worldly aggressive. Yeah, Holy Spirit, aggressive Warfare for the believer does not look the same as carnal warfare. Paul makes that distinction. And also, stay on your mission, but don't get overly defined so that the mission parameters can stay the same. It's just going to be different than the way you thought it was going to go down, but you still, Charlie, might continue the mission. Oh yeah, Stay on it. Remind me since we're talking about it. Remember, Princess Bride? We are men of action. Lies do not become us.
Speaker 2:Yeah, there's something to be said, uh, about peter and and how he maintained his, his composure and everything. I think that's kind of what that's. The takeaway here is he got a word and that word could have been very confusing, it could have caused great fear and panic in him, but instead he stepped out on faith and I think Peter of course Peter is also coming off his experience of denying Jesus as well, and he knows he doesn't want to do that again.
Speaker 1:He already got some battle scars.
Speaker 2:Yes, he's got his experience, he's got his battle scars. So, yeah, in this instance, I'm sure he's thinking of that going. Hmm, okay, I trust you, I'm going to step out and you know what. That's what we got to do, and I can only imagine the joy that, along with the the all but the joy that Peter must've saw and felt when he seen Cornelius and his entire house be saved and baptized in the Holy spirit. Man, that'd been awesome.
Speaker 1:One of my favorite authors. I don't know if it's my favorite poem, but it's up there. It's one of my top two Poem, called If, by Rudyard Kipling. Yeah, both of my sons have a copy of this.
Speaker 1:If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you. If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you but make allowance for their doubting too. If you can wait and not be tired by waiting or being lied about. Don't deal in lies or being hated. Don't give way to hating and yet don't look in lies or being hated. Don't give way to hating and yet don't look too good nor talk too wise.
Speaker 1:If you can dream and not make dreams your master. If you can think and not make thoughts your aim. If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same. If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools. Or watch the things you gave your life to broken and stoop and build them up with worn out tools.
Speaker 1:If you can make one heap out of all your winnings and risk it on one turn of pitch and toss and lose and start again at your beginnings and never breathe a word about your loss. If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew to serve your turn long after they're gone and so hold on when there is nothing in you except the will which says to them, hold on. If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue virtue or walk with kings, nor lose a common touch. If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you. If all men count with you, but none too much. If you can fill the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds worth of distance run, yours is the earth and everything that's in it. And, which is more, you'll be a man.
