Show Notes

You are listening to a special edition of Outside The Boards podcast celebrating the Oak Brook Polo Club’s 100th Anniversary.

Founded in 1922 by legendary businessman, Paul Butler, the Oak Brook Polo Club is an American Polo treasure and one of the oldest polo clubs in the United States. It was once the sport's epicenter for elite professional polo and served as home to the U.S. Open Polo Championship for twenty-four straight seasons and other prestigious international and national polo tournaments.

In 2022, the Oak Brook Polo Club will be celebrating its 100th anniversary and will be returning to its original and masterpiece field, the Cecil Smith Field.

To honor this historic occasion, the Oak Brook Polo Club has invited Club friends and family to share stories and their most fondest memories of visiting and playing at Oak Brook. Join as we take listeners down memory lane with some of the sport’s household names while they share their experiences at Oak Brook and the impact the Club and its founder’s have played on their lives.  Welcome to this Outside The Boards special podcast edition, with your host Danny O’Leary.

My guests on today’s podcast need no introduction, the legendary Jorie Butler Kent, daughter of Paul Butler, and her daughter Reute Butler. Both women are gifted riders and polo players themselves with multiple accolades tied to their names and success on the field. Jorie won numerous horse show and jumping event championships by the time she was 17. From 1967 to 1979, Jorie served as the director of the Butler’s Sports Core where she built and managed the Oak Brook Bath & Tennis Club and Oak Brook Polo Club. Jorie continued her interest in polo and would become the first woman member along side Sue Sally Hale to be rated by the USPA in 1971. Her daughter Reute also found success on the field having organized and played in Oak Brook’s first ever Junior Challenge Trophy and both played and sponsored two Sun Ranch polo Teams. Reute is currently the President of the Friends of Conversation, an organization founded by her mother Jorie 1982. one of the world's earliest leaders in the development of community conservation in Masai Mara of Kenya.

Jorie and Reute are two of polo’s most important women and glass sealing breakers having paved the way for many in the game. I’m thrille

Combine this with sport's party-like atmosphere and lifestyle and you have a recipe for success.

Today, the sport has yet to experience its full potential. The industry is fragmented, riddled with politics and in-experience. Outside The Boards™ was designed to change all that and bri...
