Mike Becker: from flying airplanes to running PIA National

Mike Becker is the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Vice President of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA National). He has over 15 years of experience in the insurance industry. His deep insight into industry trends have helped him create strategies that increase revenue for the organization and its affiliates, and for its members. He has a special expertise in streamlining business operations and leading growth initiatives.

Mike is native to Washington, D.C., a local guy, and there are not too many of them. Mike went to George Mason University where he obtained a BA degree in Government & International Politics. He has worked in politics and even spent some time working at Capitol Hill in the U.S. House of Representatives. He has experience in the pharmaceutical industry where he worked on government relations and policies. Like many of us, he kinda tripped and fell into the insurance industry, and we are so very happy it happened. He has been working at PIA National for fifteen and a half years and has been very successful in his work with the organization. Some of his key accomplishments in PIA include: 

— Restructured Error & Omissions staff and eliminated inefficiencies, enabling staff to focus on sales. Changes resulted in an additional $400K in sales in 2 years.

— With a strategic partner, launched a market access program with 50 national and specialty carriers, resulting in an average of 5–10 agency sign-ons per week and increased revenue.

— Utilized networking skills to identify an additional potential buyer for an office building, negotiating a final selling price of $500K more than earlier bids. With proceeds from sale, eliminated debts, purchased a state-of-the-art building, and invested millions.

What keeps Mike motivated and has kept him in the insurance industry is the people. That's right! We definitely agree with Mike. The insurance industry has amazing and inspiring people all over the world. This industry has outstanding professionals and human beings who make us feel fortunate to be part of it all. That’s why we know insurance can be FUN and a great industry to work in.   

FUN facts: He has a real love for aviation. When he was in High School he worked out his pilot’s license before his driver’s license. At one point his parents would drive him to the airport to fly planes before he could even drive their car. He is still a pilot! He also likes history. After a quick lesson about the history of the Manhattan cocktail we are reminded again that history is FUN. Also, Mike and the President of PIA of Puerto Rico & the Caribbean, Carlos Felipe Silén, both attended the George Mason University which is a pretty cool coincidence that they discovered when they met in a meeting in Puerto Rico.
