Thanks for tuning in to today's Horsewoman Podcast. Our show explores women in the horse industry as they share their dreams, challenges, successes. What drives these women? Well, let's find out. Hi, this is Rose Cushing, and I'm the host of today's Horsewoman Podcast. Today my guest is Michelle Chasen, and she is a Reiki master, and she works with horses over at Rainbow's Edge Rescue. So welcome to the show, Michelle.
SPEAKER_01Thank you so much for having me.
Rose CushingTell the audience a little bit about who you are before we get started. They may not have known you.
SPEAKER_01Okay. So I have two businesses. Um, one is called Mama's Day Spiritual Healing, which is like my human side of Reiki, um, where I also offer crystal, I'm a crystal healer and I also do past life regression. Um, and then I have my animal side of the business, which is called Beak, Bark, and Beyond. And that is where I offer animal Reiki and healing and um animal communication sessions. Okay.
Rose CushingSo where are you located in Florida? Yeah, I'm in Florida. Okay. So tell us a little bit about what you're doing over at Rainbow's Edge.
SPEAKER_01So, Rainbow's Edge, um, they took in from one of the worst um horse rescues they've ever had to do down in Ocala, eight um stallions. And those poor horses are traumatized. There's several that are afraid of people. There were health issues. And um, Roxanne reached out to me to ask if I could come out there and see if I could help, which I was very grateful and excited to do. And we started off working with a horse named Buddy, who had some um physical stuff going on, some um um stomach issues, some lameness, and that kind of stuff. And so I started working with him and um he made improvements, and I'm happy to say he was just um moved to a foster home, which made me very, very happy. Um, some of the other horses, there's um Sammy who is terrified of people. So I've been working with him. It's going to be baby steps with him. Um, it'll be a long process, but he is making a little bit of progress. And then um, when I'm in the barn working on Sammy, all the other horses just love receiving the energy. You can just tell. Um, because what Animal Reiki does is it relaxes their nervous system and allows them to get into that deep state of relaxation where healing can take place, whether it's you know, something emotional, trauma, or if it's something physical. So um I try to go out there every couple weeks. They're a little farther away, about an hour and a half from me. So I can't go every week like I wish I could. But um, I've really enjoyed going out there and just seeing the changes in the horses.
Rose CushingNow, I'm not familiar with Reiki. So tell me, what does Reiki look like when you come to work on my horse? What happens?
SPEAKER_01So um it looks kind of weird. Um, it's energy work. So what I'm what I'm doing is, and we all know how sensitive horses are, and we know about their electromagnetic field and you know how they can, you know, feel us from a distance and how they can pick up on people. And so with working with their energy, um, I'm able to get them into that deep state of relaxation, like I had mentioned before. So if I'm working on your horse, oh, the one important thing is it is always animal-led. We never force it on them. So a lot of times what I'll do is I'll make what I call a Reiki zone, which is like an energy zone, and then they can come into it if they want the energy, or they can step out of it if they don't want the energy. It is always up to the animal. Um, usually they come in.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And then sometimes they even will get closer. So I never start off by touching, I just simply, you know, um place my hands up, do as I was trained, which we have. Um, we have a symbol for Animal Reiki, which connects us energetically with the horse. And then I'll just, you know, put my hands up and make that circle. And I can feel things in my hand, like I can feel them pulling from the palm. You can feel them except, or my hands will get tingly or something like that. And so I'll just simply just do that to connect with them. And then I look for signs like yawning, snorting, um the back leg being relaxed, you know, all the signs of relaxation. Um, I've had several that have literally fallen asleep and they have almost fallen over. Um, so yeah, so that's what it looks like is I just simply connect with them energetically and and let the energy and and you know, their energy field work together for the healing to relax them.
Rose CushingSo when you get them in this relaxed state, what moves you forward with the healing? I mean, how does just because they're relaxing, or how does that part work?
SPEAKER_01It's just yeah, it just the energy just starts to to flow through and the energy knows what they need. Um so if it's physical, um, like there's a horse, I work with another rescue called Red Dragonfly, Large Animal Rescue. And um Dee Dee has horrible arthritis and she has a big knot on her leg. And so when I work with her, I actually do bend down and place my hand over that knot and let that energy, you know, flow through. And what's happened is the days that I worked on her, I've gotten texts from the lady that runs, and she's like, oh my God, Dee Dee just went running through the field. Right. So, you know, which is which is a wonderful thing. Um yeah, I don't I can set an intent for a session, like there's another horse, Toby, um, who has um insulin resistance and therefore was starting to, you know, um get laminitis and there were things that were going on. And so I can set the intent of okay, this is what I want the energy to focus on, is and and so I do that a lot of times. But if I don't know what they need, like for example, Sammy and his, I mean, I know he was traumatized by that abuse and everything like that. Um, I just let the energy find what they need, and it works the same way on humans. You know, I have humans come in here and and you know, we may not know exactly what's going on, or they may not want to tell me what's going on, but it still helps them, you know, hopefully release whatever they're holding. You know, that's the biggest thing, especially with trauma, is you want you don't want to hold on to that, you want to release it because then it can manifest in other physical things, you know, in humans it could be neck issues, back issues, stomach issues, that kind of stuff. So yeah.
Rose CushingOkay. Now tell me about the animal communications part.
SPEAKER_01So the animal communications part, sometimes I think I'm crazy. That um started when I took my animal Reiki classes, and it's because I'm I'm an open channel now. And so um I heard my I have two shihtsu's, and one of them sat in my lap and we had a conversation, and I was like, Did that just happen? And I asked my Reiki master, I said, I just talked to, and she's like, Oh, yeah, that happens. And then um, this wonderful Reiki master that uh another one I learned for um Pamela LeBlanc, she developed a course in animal communication for Reiki practitioners, and so I've taken that. Um it's fascinating because you think you're talking to yourself, but you're not. I guess it's the equivalent of what maybe psychics hear when they, you know, hear spirits and that kind of stuff. And I am clear audience, so I do hear things and I do see things, and so when I do the animal communication, um I'll have the the owner, you know, ask four or five questions they would want to know. And what I see in in my mind's eye is like just an empty room, and then the animal will come in there and then I connect through the heart chakra. That's how we connect, and then I ask them questions. And I've had some really funny animals, but I found out um getting back to Rainbow, you know, those horses didn't come with names. And so when I was out there, um, Roxanne was like, see if you can, you know, find out names. And so um the one horse, um, I asked him, I said, you know, what it what is your name? Do you have a name you want to be called? And he was like, I'm speedy, I'm fast, I wanted to do something with you know, with that. And um, and then I heard the name Ace and I was like, okay, Ace. And then Sammy told me his name, and then um another horse, Buster, gave me his name. So um what's interesting about it is you find out sometimes what your animal thinks about you. But you also find out what you know, maybe what they need, if they need a change or something like that. Um, again, I would never do that over communicating with a vet. Um my sister had a cat that wasn't eating, and I talked to her, her name was Daisy. I talked to her, and I was talking to her, and I said, Okay, I said, Well, mom's probably gonna change your food, and you know, she may get you something different. And I said, or something maybe for older, and I got the word older out, and I heard her go, excuse me. She was so offended because I had called her older. So um, it's really interesting. The things that they think um, what I have found is if they were rescued, a lot of times the new owner or caretaker wants to know um what happened to them. Yeah, and they don't want to talk about it. And it's not because of the memories that they have about it, it's because they're concerned for their owner and they don't want them to feel bad because there's nothing they could have done. And so their animals are very sensitive to that. Same thing with dying, because the other thing I do help with that I forgot to mention with is um end-of-life support. Um, through animal Reiki, I'm able to help the animal transition and then also help the caretaker with their grief, also. But a lot of animals will hang around way past when they're supposed to because they're worried about their moms and dads. They don't want to see them cry, they don't want to see them be sad, and so a lot of times they'll hang out and longer than they should because of that very reason. Death to animals is just like, okay, I'm going back to the other side. It's not circ, you know, it's circle of life. It's it's nothing to them. But what who they worry about is us. So I have found that really interesting as I have worked with animals that have crossed over and then those that are transitioning, also.
Rose CushingPeople have the same thing, you know. I think that a lot of times I I know some of my family that was older, they didn't let go and go on until they one of us told them it was okay. Exactly. So, you know, that makes sense to me. Yeah, that is so cool. So you've achieved quite a bit to become a Reiki master. So what's left on your bucket list to achieve?
SPEAKER_01Well, I do want to work with animals more. Not that I don't love working with my human clients, but I just love working with animals. You know, I was that little girl that always wanted a horse. So for me to be working with horses, it just makes me so happy. It's almost like my therapy sometimes because I just love being around them. They're just they're so special. They they just really are. Um, so I would like to continue working with horses. Um I would like to maybe hopefully find, you know, people that are in the horse world more, you know, more than rescues that maybe would be would be interested in my services. Um I am planning on um reaching out in town locally to like doggy daycares and boarding things to see if they'd like to add on animal reiki as a service. If pet parents, you know, if you have a dog that's stressed out or something like that, it could help with that. Um I teach, I do teach animal Reiki. So if there are any Reiki practitioners out there that are interested in taking animal Reiki, I do teach. Um and yeah, just just trying to expand more.
Rose CushingOkay. Now, how can people find you and follow you and book you?
SPEAKER_01So my website is beekbarkbeyond.com. And then I'm also on Instagram uh at beakbarkbeyond and Facebook at beakbarkbeyond. Um and you can book Animal Communication or Animal Reiki. Um, both of them can be done via distance. Um, energy knows no boundaries. So um I've been working on a friend of mine's dog in the UK with great results. So, you know, even with horses. Locally, um, I do a lot of my my stuff via distance, except for the larger animals, like the horses, because I do like to be there. Plus, it's hard for some of the, you know, hold up a phone the whole time. Plus, I want to be in that energy anyway. Um, but yeah, it it can be done via distance with no problem, with the same results as in person.
Rose CushingOkay, that that's very interesting. Now, for people coming into the horse industry and looking for a career in a way that or maybe even to enhance what they already know, what advice would you give them about looking at this as a career?
SPEAKER_01I think it's I think it's something that is starting to come more to the forefront. Um, I know the is it AKC American American Chemical Club did an article recently on the benefits of Reiki with dogs. Um, there's starting to be more research on it. And I think it's something that is is definitely going to take hold. So um I would certainly consider it. Yeah.
Rose CushingGood. And for all you guys out there listening, um, Michelle has graciously agreed to write an article for Southeast Hoof Beats that'll probably be in the July issue. So stay tuned for that so you can learn more about it and and know how to contact her and and get answers to your questions. So um, with your large animals, do you work on like cows and and all large animals?
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah. Any any animals are receptive to Reiki. I mean, um, yeah, yeah. I mean, even like I said, red dragonfly, they got ended up with a baby emu last year. And and she wasn't doing well, she was undernourished, and so yeah, I gave her Reiki a lot and she she loves it. Now she's now she runs the farm. Her name's Monique. She's so funny. If you go to my Instagram, you'll see um there's a a video where we put her in a hat. And I've it it's so frustrating because I put up all of this, you know, content and I work on my content. And the one thing that took off, because it's got 42,000 views, is this emu in a hat. Solid. I saw it, but it was precious, yes. So, but yeah, I mean, even we'll even sometimes I'll go to like uh, you know, they have different webcams like in Africa and all over, you know, just with the animals or zoos, and I'll just you know pop in and I'll and I'll ask, you know, would you like some energy? And you can see the them like come to the camera. And and so any animal, you know, does. Now there was one time where Toby, who's the horse that has the insulin resistance, he just wasn't feeling well. And I walked out and I thought he was, you know, wanting the energy, and then I turned my back and he gave me a little love nip on my thigh, like nope, not today. And I respect that. I knew that was my cue. Okay, we're not we're not doing this today. So you just you just have to pay attention to the cues and and let them lead. Wow. Now what does a cow tell you? I haven't talked to any cows. Okay, all right. I've only I've talked to to the horse, um, and the horses, and then cats and dogs, or my main rat, a rat. Oh my god, and a turtle, and um, I have a friend that's got like 10 different kinds of animals. Um, she has a snake. I have yet to get the snake to be able to talk to me. It just goes right on out of the other room, doesn't want anything to do with me. And and the same thing with animal communications. Sometimes they don't want to talk or they're busy or they're napping or whatever. And and so if someone pays me for a session, I'll let them know I will try again in a couple days, or I will try again, you know. But actually, this weekend, uh lady hired me to go up about an hour from here to talk to her two horses. So I'm looking forward to doing that and meeting them and seeing what they have to say. She just wants to know what they think, nothing going on with them.
Rose CushingYeah, well, you know, that I think that's so cool. And the fact that you can, you know, that you really can, and that that's just amazing. So this is very fascinating.
SPEAKER_01And it's not just animals, it's plants. I taught I have a live oak tree across the street named Melvin, and we have conversations. Those those conversations can be kind of deep. Um, I you have to shut it off sometimes because sometimes I've walked out in my yard and and I'll give one plant water because I have a big pollinator garden, and then the rest of them are like, hey, you know, over here, over here we need water too. Or or we'd like, and they love Reiki too. So I'll go out there and Reiki my garden and stuff like that. It's just really good. It's good for humans, it's good for animals. It's just yeah, it's good stuff.
Rose CushingThat's really cool.
SPEAKER_01Now remind everybody again how they can find you. So my website is beakbarkbeyond.com, and then the same name for Facebook and Instagram.
Rose CushingOkay, all right. So thank you so much for being on the show today, and I'm sure everybody's gonna be really curious and looking you up soon. And I'm looking forward to your article.
SPEAKER_01Thank you so much. Thanks for having me. I appreciate it.
