that is a powerful spirit of miraculous proportions? 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:58.959 When the Spirit of God has the power to literally put breath back into the lungs of someone who has lay dead for the last 72 hours, to reawaken the organs, to get the blood flowing again through the veins. 00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:04.000 And it says this the same spirit that did that, that raised Christ from the dead. what the Bible calls trials, tribulations, difficulties, troubles, even the big S word, suffering. 00:07:26.959 --> 00:07:28.160 Here's what I start to think. 00:07:28.240 --> 00:07:29.759 Maybe that's not true. 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:34.399 But I've done this Jesus thing long enough to fully reject that mind game. 00:07:34.800 --> 00:07:37.439 I stand on the word of God, I stand on the promises of God. 00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:41.040 I know it's true, I've tasted it, I've experienced it at different times in my life. 00:07:41.199 --> 00:07:41.920 So I reject that. 00:07:42.000 --> Because there's condemnation in that. 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:16.480 And a few verses earlier in Romans 8, the same writer said, Therefore, now there is no condemnation if you've put your faith in Christ Jesus, because Christ Jesus has set us free from the law that came with sin and death that came with sin. 00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:18.160 We've been set free from that. 00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:19.839 So I reject that as well. 00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:24.560 And the third option that I have come to anchor myself in is simply this. 00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:31.519 No matter what I am going to go through in life, no matter what you are going to go through in life, here is the truth. 00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:35.840 God does not absolve us from all difficulty because we put our faith in him. 00:08:36.159 --> 00:08:42.000 God doesn't get us out of all of the troubles we sometimes create for ourselves and others because we've put our faith in him. 00:08:42.559 --> 00:08:47.360 God is explicitly honest with us throughout his word and history. 00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:48.720 Jesus said it best. 00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:50.799 He said, In this world you will what? 00:08:50.960 --> 00:08:51.840 You will have trouble. 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:53.840 I'm so grateful he said that. 00:08:55.120 --> 00:08:59.360 He says, but be of good cheer, because I've overcome the world. 00:08:59.519 --> 00:09:06.159 In other words, be of good cheer because the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead is going to see you through this season. 00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:10.799 Some of 00:09:24.559 But a bunch of us today, just by the sheer numbers, you come in here, and this is one of the chapters being written in the book of your life that you say I could do without this chapter. 00:09:25.200 --> 00:09:37.120 And this is the beauty and the power of the empty tomb, is that it brings with us, the with it, this powerful force, this fuel to the human soul and spirit, which we call hope. 00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:43.519 Easter is a weekend of hope where we re-up on it and we remember it. 00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:46.080 And so I want to do this for a few minutes. 00:09:46.240 --> 00:09:51.279 I, since this is year 20 into preaching about Easter, start running out of material. 00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:52.799 You know what I'm talking about? 00:09:53.120 --> 00:10:00.480 And so I'm gonna tell the same precious story over, but I'm gonna go to a place you wouldn't normally in the Bible associate with the Easter story. 00:10:00.720 --> 00:10:04.639 It's this book, many of you might not even know that it was in the Bible or where it's in the Bible. 00:10:04.720 --> 00:10:06.480 It's this book called Lamentations. 00:10:06.799 --> 00:10:13.120 And it's titled Lamentations precisely because it's a guy lamenting about how difficult life has gotten. 00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:23.519 But when you really start to get into what he is saying, you start to realize in this small, obscure book, he's actually giving us a masterclass on what hope is. 00:10:24.080 --> 00:10:29.679 And he's equally and importantly giving us a masterclass on what hope isn't. 00:10:29.919 --> 00:10:39.759 Because to fully understand what true hope is, you also have to understand the false definitions that we as a world and we as a culture have putting on this idea of hope. 00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:42.960 And so I'm gonna start by talking about what hope isn't. 00:10:43.279 --> 00:10:45.679 And I learned this from the guy who wrote this book. 00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:48.000 His name is this uh Jeremiah. 00:10:48.159 --> 00:10:52.639 He's one of the great prophets who helped tell the story of God in ancient times. 00:10:52.960 --> 00:10:55.759 He's famously referred to as the weeping prophet. 00:10:56.240 --> 00:11:01.679 Because if you think life's hard, I challenge you to read his life, and you might feel a little bit better. 00:11:01.840 --> 00:11:04.000 You'll at least feel seen and heard. 00:11:04.799 --> 00:11:23.600 And in chapter three, where we're gonna start reading in a few minutes, before we get there, the first 18 verses is this it is Jeremiah just pouring out his heart to God, and he is being brutally honest, and he is pulling no punches, and he is unashamedly telling God what's up and what is going on. 00:11:23.840 --> 00:11:30.720 Jeremiah had been asked by God as a prophet to speak to the nation of Israel when they were at one of their heights of rebellion. 00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:33.919 And so he didn't have a fun message to give. 00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:37.200 They weren't leaning in like you guys are. 00:11:37.440 --> 00:11:39.279 They rejected his message. 00:11:39.519 --> 00:11:49.679 He lost his friends, he lost his family, he had to be in hiding and on the run because not his enemies, his own people wanted to kill him for the message he gave on behalf of God. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:58.799 He goes on in the first 18 verses to say, because of that season of life, his body had also caught up to that stress, and he had become very physically ill. 00:11:58.960 --> 00:12:04.879 And he's talking honestly before God, going, I don't get this, I don't like this, I want to quit, I want to give up. 00:12:05.039 --> 00:12:11.440 There's some points in the book of Jeremiah and Lamentations where he's alluding to just wanting to die and be done with it. 00:12:12.879 --> 00:12:19.360 And what we learn in those first 18 verses before we get to the really beautiful news is what hope isn't. 00:12:19.840 --> 00:12:26.159 So I just want to give you a few thoughts about what hope isn't so we can be very clear about what true hope really is. 00:12:26.240 --> 00:12:32.159 And the first thing is this hope is not simply blind optimism or wishful thinking. 00:12:32.639 --> 00:12:36.080 Hope is not just a principle to live by. 00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:40.799 Hope is definitely way more than an emotion or a feeling. 00:12:41.840 --> 00:12:52.320 Hope in its purest form is a person and it has a face and it has a name and it has scars in his hands and scars in his feet. 00:12:52.480 --> 00:12:56.639 Hope is not closing your eyes and wishing for a better future. 00:12:56.799 --> 00:13:06.960 Hope is anchoring yourself to the one who did the ultimate for you and said the reason he was compelled to do it is because nobody on planet earth can love you the way he loved you. 00:13:07.120 --> 00:13:15.279 He would say, a greater man has no one than this, that when someone lays down their life for their friend, and this is what Jesus has done. 00:13:15.600 --> 00:13:18.080 Jesus is our hope. 00:13:18.320 --> 00:13:23.279 Hope has a name, hope has scars, hope has a face. 00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:24.960 Number two is this, this is huge. 00:13:25.120 --> 00:13:26.639 Jeremiah teaches us this. 00:13:26.799 --> 00:13:30.320 Hope, true hope, is not dismissing reality. 00:13:31.120 --> 00:13:35.519 Go back this week and read the first 18 verses of Lamentations chapter 3. 00:13:35.919 --> 00:13:40.799 Jeremiah is so boldly saying everything that's on his mind before the Lord. 00:13:40.879 --> 00:13:49.759 And if you didn't know this about God, let me be the first one to tell you you have been given full precedent and permission to be brutally honest before God. 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:52.159 See, God knew the end from the beginning. 00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:54.480 Not one of your days is a shock to him. 00:13:54.799 --> 00:14:03.120 Your seasons of difficulty and struggling and sometimes even suffering, that is not in any way, shape, or form a shock to God. 00:14:04.879 --> 00:14:10.879 And see, the human soul and spirit only has a certain capacity to hold things. 00:14:11.200 --> 00:14:21.200 And so if you don't feel permission with God to get it all out, there's no room left for it to be replaced with what can move you forward in this life. 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:22.320 Hope. 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:34.080 And so hope isn't just a denial of reality, instead, it's letting Jesus Christ lead you and guide you through every single one of those difficult realities. 00:14:34.480 --> 00:14:39.360 Third thing is this hope is not a get out of jail free card. 00:14:40.080 --> 00:14:41.679 And here's why I say that. 00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:51.120 The Apostle Paul in Philippians chapter 3, he starts talking Easter language and he says this, listen to this, he says, I want to know Christ. 00:14:51.360 --> 00:14:52.799 And I say, Me too, Paul. 00:14:52.879 --> 00:14:53.600 And he repeats it. 00:14:53.679 --> 00:14:55.200 He goes, Yeah, I want to know Christ. 00:14:55.279 --> 00:14:59.279 But then he says this, he goes, and I want to know the power of his resurrection. 00:14:59.440 --> 00:15:01.279 And I'm feeling it, I'm going, me too, Paul. 00:15:01.360 --> 00:15:01.759 Who doesn't? 00:15:01.840 --> 00:15:04.960 The same spirit that raised Christ from the dead, I've been told now lives in me. 00:15:05.120 --> 00:15:05.840 Let's go. 00:15:06.080 --> 00:15:08.240 The problem though is Paul keeps writing. 00:15:09.039 --> 00:15:12.960 And he says this, but I also want to share in his sufferings. 00:15:13.440 --> 00:15:18.799 And then he says, so as to attain to the fullness of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:15:19.360 --> 00:15:23.279 Resurrection, by its very definition, means this. 00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:26.799 It has to be preceded first by death. 00:15:27.519 --> 00:15:28.559 Difficulty. 00:15:28.879 --> 00:15:30.960 Jesus said, Some of the sufferings. 00:15:31.039 --> 00:15:39.279 If you're my disciple, if you're my follower, you're gonna share to some degree in some of the same things that you saw and witness me go through. 00:15:40.320 --> 00:15:43.200 Of course I want to share in the resurrection power. 00:15:43.440 --> 00:15:51.840 But you can't have resurrection power unless it's preceded by something incredibly difficult, which Jesus told us we would have. 00:15:52.480 --> 00:16:10.159 Now, where hope comes into play and is so powerful is knowing no matter what difficulty I am walking through, no matter how hard life can get, God is up to some of his most sovereignly important and significant work in my life, not when everything's easy, but when everything's difficult. 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:17.360 I think it was Frederick Nietzsche who said it, and then Kelly Clarkson who sung it. 00:16:17.679 --> 00:16:20.480 What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. 00:16:21.600 --> 00:16:27.679 Alright, I won't sing because I don't want to ruin your Easter, but and it's literally true. 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:34.639 The Apostle James put it this way: consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds. 00:16:34.799 --> 00:16:35.519 Here's why. 00:16:35.679 --> 00:16:39.360 He says, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 00:16:39.519 --> 00:16:42.399 He says, and perseverance has to finish its work. 00:16:42.559 --> 00:16:42.960 Why? 00:16:43.120 --> 00:16:47.679 So that we may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:17:03.759 The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians chapter 12 says it this way: He says, In my weakest moments was ironically when God's power was actually made most perfect, and then he finishes by saying, His grace is sufficient for you. 00:17:04.079 --> 00:17:10.160 In your weakness is when God's resurrection power is actually up to its best work. 00:17:10.400 --> 00:17:15.119 And most of the time you won't feel it because you feel like you're surviving, not thriving. 00:17:15.440 --> 00:17:17.119 But what's the alternative? 00:17:17.440 --> 00:17:19.119 I understand why we do this. 00:17:34.160 --> 00:17:37.279 But in 2026 America, I think we gotta talk about this. 00:17:37.519 --> 00:17:45.200 Hope is not closing your eyes, crossing your legs, lighting a hemp candle, and manifesting your future. 00:17:45.519 --> 00:17:48.400 It's not a conversation with the universe. 00:17:48.720 --> 00:17:50.400 And I mean that with love. 00:17:52.880 --> 00:18:05.599 There is only forever and all time one man affestation, keyword manifestation, that you will ever need, and it will not disappoint. 00:18:05.839 --> 00:18:08.559 There's only one hope troubles in life with, of all things, depression, and yet here I was. 00:25:45.839 --> 00:25:52.960 And I've prayed for it to be delivered, I've prayed for it to be healed, I've read all the books, I've drawn so much hope is I've had just enough rear view mirror. 00:26:03.920 --> 00:26:10.240 I've lived just enough life now to see God's faithfulness through every one of those dark seasons. wanted to preach that passage of scripture this Easter and talking about hope is for the last decade I've made a habit out of getting up every morning. 00:26:26.400 --> 00:26:33.039 And the first thing I do is go right to the coldest water we have in our house, and I throw it all over my face and all over my body just to wake up. 00:26:33.200 --> 00:26:37.599 I slap myself a few times, and then here's what I do immediately next. 00:26:37.839 --> 00:26:44.319 I look in the mirror, especially the mornings when life's lifing. 00:26:44.559 --> 00:26:52.400 I look in the mirror and I say, yet I'm gonna call this to mind this morning, God, because of your great love that I have tasted and experienced. 00:26:52.640 --> 00:26:57.519 I am not gonna live today consumed by life and all of decisions come when we're getting bored in the waiting, when we're getting frustrated in the waiting, when we're getting tired and worn out in the waiting, and the same spirit that raised Christ from the dead is a power to allow you to wait with hope and faith and trust that God is up to something underneath what you're experiencing that is for your good, that he's growing you, that he's maturing
