Introduction and Overview
Real Theo Harvey: Hey everyone, this is show versus business. This is Theo Harvey. We're doing something a little different today, right? Me and Mr. Binger going back and forth, talking about our specific sections on when it comes to show versus business. So as you can see, I'm in an undisclosed location right now doing something a little bit different, but hope you enjoy to switch it up from time to time.
In this edition, we're going to get into several different things. I think one of the things that we're going to talk about is the holiday movies. What's happening now going on in Hollywood, coming from Moana, coming from Gladiator 2, Wicked, had opportunity to see these movies. Mr. Benjamin, maybe not as much, but he could talk about.
The show part of this, and I can talk a little bit about the business aspect of it. Then we'll talk a little bit about AI artificial intelligence and what's happening and how it's evolving. This is holiday season. We're recording this. This is the time of Thanksgiving. So it's a lot of movies, not just movies, but also.
Sports, a lot of things going on in basketball, football. I'll talk about the business side of that as well. And then last but not least, we'll get into what's happening in influencer market, right?
Holiday Movies Breakdown
Real Theo Harvey: So I'll go into a little bit of my section where we start talking about the movies, right? Holiday movies, this past Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we had 30 million and.
Holiday booking sales. It was huge opportunity for, everything to happen and evolve over time. So this is huge, important when you look at what's happening in Hollywood across the industry right now, because Thanksgiving holiday, usually pretty good for one movie, but for three movies to do well, that's great.
Three movies did exceptionally well. First you had Moana too, right? Which was the. sequel to Moana didn't do well in the box office originally, but this one is absolutely going to be a billion dollars, right? When it comes to what's happening in the industry, we're going to see a huge outgrowth, Moana movies.
There's already hints of a Moana three coming out. I think the As of recording, it already made almost $300 million in its opening weekend. That's unheard of for animated films up there. It beat frozen out, I think when it came to Thanksgiving holiday movies, and then you kinda look at what happened with Moana, right?
So you had families going to see that, but also Moana had a gr ground swell because a lot of families had Moana in background was on Disney Plus for years. And this became a swell of folks, a goodwill for folks to want to see what was happening with Moana and what people want to see out there in the industry.
So very exciting time to see what's happening in the industry from a business standpoint. But when you look at what happened next, right? So you had another spectacle movie, Wicked, came out, right? This is based on the. On the theater production Wicked, right? It's like a prequel to Wizard of Oz.
If you haven't seen the play, phenomenal play, great music. But this is the first time they actually had a movie of the play, which is based on a book, right? Which is based on property from the Wizard of Oz. So it's like all these things packed into one. Huge promotional push. If you didn't know what Wicked was before it came out, you probably know what it is now because they had so many partners.
They had Starbucks. They had Target. They had green and pink out there in the world, which are the two main colors of the two protagonists. Huge opening weekend for as well. That did well, right? And there's hints that they're going to be rebooting. Pete viewing of this because it's a sing along right?
Broadway shows, these tunes have been around for over 20 years. And then last but not least, you had Gladiator 2, right? Which is that testosterone movie that a lot of men like to see. There was hints that this is going to be in line with Barbenheimer, right? Which was that Barbie and Oppenheimer movie last summer that both pushed both movies up into the billion dollar stratosphere and helped Oppenheimer win the Academy Award last year.
Guess what? This glad here too is not Academy Award winner, but it was high testosterone, a lot of action, a lot of violence, and it had a very interesting acting component from Denzel Washington, which was fascinating to me him playing a supporting role, but also a little bit out there is more villainous.
So if you like him in training day, this is that Denzel of old. And there's been rumors that he's been on a press tour talking about, look, he's going to be doing more franchises. So there's equalizer. Four and five coming out. He's talking about doing black Panther three, which was news to everybody. So when that came out everybody's, Oh, I guess there's a black Panther three.
Ryan Coogler said he's going to do that. So yeah, huge. Opening weekend. I think this was like the second highest Thanksgiving weekend ever opening weekend ever. So these three movies boasted the box office and got everyone talking.
The State of Theaters and Holiday Films
Mr.Benja: Hello, all. This is Mr. Benja with show versus business. And I am the show side, apparently the creative side.
You probably heard from Theo on how this podcast is set up, so I'm not going to go over that again. But I just want to thank you all for showing up. Being here subscribing and enough with all that. Let's just get into it. Cause right now I do want to talk about something and that is the creativity of holiday movies.
Now, theaters and cinema have been doing things for a long time and. Somehow they got attached to the whole holiday spirit kind of thing. The big Christmas blockbuster and the summer blockbuster. Those were the two big times of year. But over time, it seems that Christmas has turned into this, I don't know, schlockfest.
I don't even like using the word schlock. It sounds weird to me, but nevertheless, here we are with this series of sequels and not the greatest holiday movies. Maybe it was different for me than it is for you, but I remember growing up and going to the theaters during Christmas time. Specifically with my family and some friends or whoever, and there was always movies to see, if not on Christmas day, before and after.
It was always a big event. Get all your friends together who you haven't seen in a while and go to the theater. Now that's not so much true. Right now, theaters are really struggling and hurting. And I'm not sure that they're really trying very hard to capitalize off Christmas. Now you have two different types of movies that seem to come out.
These big tentpole movies that are supposed to hold up an entire industry. Maybe your gladiator twos, your Moana twos. And yes, most of these will be sequels because they want to make sure that they rake in the money. And then on the other hand, you have these kind of goofy off kilter. weird series, right?
Once in a while you'll have something like Elf, let's say, that comes out and it hits or National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. It's not necessarily a blockbuster, but it just gets out there and hits. So these are your two extremes and that's all fine, and good. You keep doing that. But I think somewhere in the machine, the quality started going down.
So let's think about this. How can we get this back? And I'm talking to you, theater people. I know if you're just listening to this as a listener, you probably don't own a major movie studio and can't do much about this, but. Think about this. If we had a holiday tradition of going out to theaters again, What could we be doing?
What could we be going to the cinemas for right now? I just want to stay at home, get my, big screen TV that I got off the Black Friday deals and watch the movies at home. No need to go out. No need to get cold. No need to bother with the 30 tickets. No need to bother with another 30 per person in food and snacks.
No need to deal with gas lines, etc. So why would I go to the movies? At all, what would I ever need to leave my house for? That's a good question. So as a designer, I'm always thinking about how these things could be better. First off, you either pack it up and go home and just don't worry about it, or you try to reinvigorate it somehow.
And I think cinemas are pretty much left with trying to reinvigorate what they're gonna do. So here's some free tips to the cinema people make some more offers again. Not just the popcorn bucket. The popcorn buckets are interesting, but if every year there was a Christmas bonus of some sort, you gave out maybe you gave out some sweatshirts, some ugly Christmas sweaters, that you could only get at the theaters when you go.
And, this, of course, this is cost prohibitive, right? So just make it a special premium pricing for certain shows. And everybody who shows up to that show gets one of those special items. And this is the only way you can get it. Is this a big thing to coordinate? Yeah, but is your industry going to die if you don't start doing new things?
Maybe. Very likely. A lot of places, theaters are shutting down. Fewer show times. Fewer shows to pick from. Less variety. Last time I was in a theater, it was a ghost town. It was pretty dead and had the weird funky smell going on. Seems like people really hadn't been cleaning. And they didn't take the time to really care for it.
So you got to get people back in the seats. And Christmas is a great time to do that. I think by giving back, thinking about community, having more community events, even the pre movie role that they show, have some specialized local news or not the news, but have some local presentations going on, some local, Hey, here's what's happening with the people around you and do some competitions, have people show up.
Make it a thing again. Make it a reason to go out. And for far too long, theaters have been just sitting around not being creative and just hoping people will roll into the actual theaters themselves. And this doesn't say much about the movies themselves, I know. But more about the experience.
Even if the movie's bad, I have wonderful experiences. I remember going to the movies to on the holidays to see my family, hang out with friends, et cetera, et cetera, play in the arcade. And right now it all just seems like a big rip. So unless you want to get ripped off, unless you want to rest in peace theaters, you got to do something better about that.
And that's my little rant on creativity and the theaters.
Real Theo Harvey: Now, when we talked a little bit about.
Holiday Sports and Streaming
Real Theo Harvey: I'm going to pivot into the holiday sports aspect, right? We don't really talk about sports too much on this podcast, but we do talk about like the opportunities and business side of that, right? And what does that mean from an entertainment standpoint?
Sports is big business, right? I think the NBA just signed streaming rights for 70 billion. We're seeing NFL starting to get into streaming with that. Black Friday game on Amazon Prime. There's rumors that well, it's not rumors. It's actual fact. They're gonna have a NFL game on Christmas Day with Beyonce at halftime huge opportunity for NFL to put themselves out there and then Lately paramount plus if you don't have paramount plus that's another streaming channel.
They're streaming because CBS is under the umbrella of Paramount, they actually put a lot of NFL games on Paramount, right? And I think last year they actually had a chiefs playoff games on streaming. So this is big business, right? I think streaming is trying to do more and more with live sports. The problem is, can they keep up, right?
That broadcast, we know broadcasters like to put a lot of stuff out there when it comes to Like free stuff and you can see it. It streams perfectly. There's no issues with the streaming. We have no problem with watching it broadcast, but now you put on streaming, there's delays. We talked about the Tyson.
We talked about the Logan fight that just happened recently. There was a lot of delays. So you're going to have a Christmas day. Football game on streaming on Netflix. If it glitches one instance, oh man, people are going to be upset. So the technology has to be there to make this work. But huge money, right?
We just talked about this. A Black Friday game now on Amazon used to be Turkey Day. You had three games, usually the Lions, the Cowboys would play. But now they have a Black Friday game. So basically while you're shopping. On Black Friday for Christmas gifts on Amazon, you can watch a football game and that's been hugely successful Amazon for the last couple of years.
So now we're going to see more of that and then I was just amazed by how many games were on just this whole week of Thanksgiving. Yeah. Basketball, college basketball is starting to be surging. You have all the college basketball tournaments, right? You had UConn, the number one team, losing pretty heavily in a lot of opportunities.
You had obviously NBA games going on because the NBA cup is becoming a thing and they're trying to promote that. So a lot of these games start to matter even in November. You have obviously football, you have Other sports trying to get in there and get your attention. These eyeballs are so valuable now because advertising dollars are key and because streaming has so much money, Netflix, the Amazons, even Apple, they can put so much money into these things that they will be able to show more and more of these games and get these different packages.
Everybody saw the NBA get that 78 billion package from. Basically, Amazon will have a game. NBC, which is going to put it on Peacock, will have games again. And then, because of this, ABC had to re up as well. We have a whole bunch of opportunities, for people to say, Hey, this is a huge opportunity to grow when it comes to sports.
The challenge would be, is there enough eyeballs for everybody to watch all this? NFL is hugely Popular NBA is starting to see decreases in their ratings. And so there's rumors that is it too much inventory out there too many games, 82 games a year. That's a lot of inventory. You can see any NBA game, but really people want to see the most important ones, right?
The Steph Curry's, you want to see LeBron James. You want to see Kevin Durant. The resurgence of the younger generation the Jason Tatum's of the world or Anthony. Edwards, are we seeing them becoming at the forefront of this, right? And so that's something that I think a lot of people are wondering if NBA can still sustain even if they got to 70 billion amount of money.
And one of the big things is, can they change the game around? Maybe three pointers is not the way it needs to go. Every team's been shooting three porters, right? Maybe they need to switch it up, make dunking more of a part of the game to make it more of an exciting product. One other thing I've been thinking about is creative
Mr.Benja: use of sports during the holidays.
So how does this work? If you have a captive audience, and that is a group of people who are ready and willing to watch what you're doing to come together and absorb whatever you're going to give them, you're already halfway towards your goal. And right now, sports does this excellently. Their Amazon is gearing up to do their thing with live sports.
Netflix is working to get the thing going on with live sports. You've got the old classic. Networks, NBC, ABC, they're fighting it out to do different things with sports. The Olympics was huge this year. Sports aren't going away. And Christmas has always been a great time for sporting events. Why can't we have e sports events, gaming events?
Why can't we have more? Just competitions. I'd like to see streamers compete. Influencers. I'd like to see them competing on things. And these are the types of things that, from a marketing sense, creatives have to work with a marketer because creators are just going to do their own thing by themselves.
You need a marketing presence to really make this happen. I'm getting choked up just thinking about working with marketers. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But getting out there and let's say have You know, some e sports gaming have some type of, online Christmas stream a thon, telethon, I know they're out there and they're doing some little things, but none of this has really been enforced and made into tradition.
We don't have this big, Hey, it's Christmas time. I'm going to sit down and watch Snoop. I'm going to sit down and watch Kai Sinat. I'm going to sit down and watch. Whoever do their thing online in some sports capacity. I remember even going to E3 years and years ago and the sports competitions they had there.
They were, they had the Madden tournaments and things at E3. It was pretty exciting, but you could tell they weren't serious about it. And I'm not sure people are taking these. Seriously, I want to say these things. The holiday spirit, the holiday vibe, the holiday push, really trying to get people to appreciate family and coming together again.
It's an interesting place that we're in, obviously with. With our phones, our tablets, the internet, you get some devices for the holidays and everybody's looking at their phone and they're not as connected as they were before, or it's a different type of connection, right? What could you do?
Right now, when I go home for the holidays, I always end up, playing a game of Scrabble with my family. There's Scrabble, the Scrabble boards get broken out, and the ants start playing, and whatever. You go to another part of the house, or another family, and then They're playing spades, spades tournaments.
It's, these are classic things that get people together and something you always do traditionally. Right now times have been moving so fast. We have to make new traditions. So maybe there are apps that are basically. built around the idea of, Hey, let's get together and, run a family fantasy sports kind of thing, just for the couple of days that we're all here and maybe it's not fancy sports, but the idea of people getting together and quote unquote, betting on things or, putting in their bids on, Hey, let's see what happens at the parade.
Let's see what happens, during the sporting event. And we're all connected on our apps. It's ways to keep it together. To keep the family together and into things, and this isn't something that's going to happen alone. Once again, you need a lot of people coming together who really want to make this happen, but right now, no one seems to care.
So in the meantime, I'm going to go back home and play Scrabble with my aunt. I'm going to go home and play spades with my cousins, and it's going to be a traditional thing. And I definitely don't expect the younger generation to really get into it. Because why would they
AI and Its Impact on Business
Real Theo Harvey: the last but not least, I'll talk a little bit about AI, what's happening in artificial intelligence.
This is needed in a year. We're seeing a lot of movements. We're seeing basically anthropic, making moves, partnering with Google. Obviously, open AI trying to make moves. One of the things that I'm seeing also is Elon Musk, who's a surgeon, right? Because he has a connection to the next president United States here, Donald Trump.
He. Is looking to sue open AI to prevent them from going for profit, fully for profit. Remember open AI, which is the number one, basically generative AI company out there right now is really trying to move from his nonprofit roots into for profit. And Elon Musk is using his political connections to stop that and block that.
And so we're going to see more of that. People are positioning, right? Who's going to own AI, right? And we'll talk a little bit. Me and Mr. Benji about predictions for next year with AI. But here's a little hint on my side from the business side of things. I do feel like we're going to see some consolidation.
We're going to see two big players, probably. OpenAI, Anthropic, because they have the most money right now, and they're going to go back and forth, right? First it was just these chat, generative AI, or excuse me, these chatbots, right? These hire models. But we're also seeing degradation in like how much they can do with these models now.
And now they're looking for more data. Can they sign more licensing deals with people who own private data, so they can learn, the models can learn faster, or learn different aspects of it, right? Also, I'm a big proponent of, what they're calling, being able to do AI agents, the ability to be on your laptop and perform as a human and doing mouse clicks and different tasks.
So that, that is something I think is going to be in the forefront. I'm hoping to see a lot more of that. And last but not least, I do see potentially we'll have more. Systems, basically, not open AI is a closed kind of ecosystem. We don't know how the models made and all that, but I'm hoping they're going to have an open model.
Facebook is really pushing that with, or Meta is really pushing their model that way. And I'm hoping we'll see more of that when it comes. AI and what it can do for the future. So more to come there. And when we do our prediction show and influencers this is something Mr. Benji he's that's basically his fence.
And he'll talk more about that. My two cents, we've seen the kinds of knots, going out there and doing his thing was Streaming is twitch streaming, doing these live streams was a celebrity guest popping on and we've seen more and more of them becoming the new celebrities. Again, this is something we're probably seeing more of, right?
It's just unheard of now with these unknown like people, a vast majority of people. People probably, my generation or older probably don't even know so many streamers, but we probably heard Mr. Beast, right? Who is going to finally have his Amazon show premiere shortly. So Mr. Beast, the biggest YouTuber in the world is going to have something on Amazon.
So we want to see what happens there. So it's going to be interesting to see what happens in the future.
Mr.Benja: Now, one thing that's been going on a lot this year, I wanted to rant about a little bit, because I guess these are. Little rants that I've been doing. Little creative rants here for the holidays. Hope you're enjoying them.
If you are, make sure that you comment. And if you don't, give us all the smoke in the comments below. Or, just subscribe and keep watching us to see if we get better or worse. And don't say anything. Either way, we're glad you're here.
Creativity in the AI Era
Mr.Benja: One thing I've been thinking about is AI and creativity. And I really hadn't had time to stop and discuss it.
There's so much potential with AI, and potential for the good and potential for harm. What are you as a creative going to do? What are you going to build? What are you going to put forth in the face of artificial intelligence? I know many jobs have already been axed. Many. Many roles have been reduced.
People have had to pivot, change styles. Literally and figuratively, people have had to just give up what they're doing. Because why do it when AI is around? And. It's really hard to fathom where we're going to go. So I hesitate here because I don't want to make any kind of predictions on how AI is going to affect us in the future.
But it's one of those technologies that's so mind bendingly powerful that it has the capability to end us in any type of future that we can imagine. What happens when we get to the last, going from the different ages industrial age, the internet age, information age, attention age, and now all of a sudden this, I don't even know if we have a name for it yet, but with artificial intelligence, the AI age, and now we're in a position where we have a fundamental technology shift that's different from all the others that have come before us.
And it's fundamentally different because instead of taking a physical thing and figuring out how to recreate that with machines or technology, we've created a mental thing and a mental thing can be coded into information, data, bits, numbers. That means that. The only thing holding it back is the amount of processes it can do, and we still really haven't tapped the surface of what we can build in terms of pure information.
And this is supposed to be the thing that separates us. Every time I go into the comment section of somebody discussing AI, it's always they'll never replace humans. I hear ya. I hear ya. But the thing you have to understand is most people don't care. We say we care you know, that people have jobs but then we'll do something that will take away jobs.
We say that we really value the artistic touch but then when it comes down to actually deciding, it's oh, that one's cheaper? Yeah, I'm going with that. Or that one got to me faster. Yeah, I'm going with that. Oh, that other thing is nice over there. I do like that handmade coffee by that barista who hand ground the beans, coffee beans.
But yeah, if this Keurig machine can just do it at home, you know what? It's good enough. I'm going with that. We might value it, but we don't patron it. We don't become patrons of these arts. These human outlets, these places where the human touch has been valuable. And this is nothing new, really.
You take this back to the age of photography. When photography came out, a lot of artists were, they didn't know what to do. It's oh I still paint and I make great pictures. And what they learned was the people were like, yeah we were going to you because we wanted the picture, not necessarily you.
So there was that divide. And once again, in that divide, you have generational shifts. So what does this mean for the future? I'm not trying to make a prediction or anything. I'm not trying to make a, a guess or tell you, you should do something a certain way. I'm just making a realization that we have to go forward in such a way that we don't get run over.
We don't throw ourselves under the bus, basically. Stepped back and you know what, I don't need to spend all my time trying to learn how to make a web page. I don't need to spend all my time learning the latest photo editing techniques if AI can just do a lot of the stuff for me.
And I was just reading a report that says that some high percentage. I'm gonna say high percentage. Some high percentage of people in Gen Z use AI like all the time. Like it's their work buddy. It's just by them. It's with them. It's part of their thing at all times. Like they used to say, Hey, carry a calculator around, carry a pen around or whatever, and now all of a sudden the internet became the thing that was, Hey, you always have the internet around, you always have search at your fingertips and forums and whatever information you need now.
It's yeah, you always have AI around. Maybe on a prediction show, I'll do more on what I actually predict is going to happen. But for you in particular, learn AI learn what the different image creation features are, learn what the different ways are that you could utilize, writing and chat GPT and figuring out spreadsheets, programming data analysis.
I've even, asked GPT therapy like questions hey man hey man, like Chad, GPT is a guy, it's hey, what can I? What can I do to re contextualize A, B, and C in this situation that happened to me? And chat GPT will give me some answers and even links if I want them on things to read.
Yeah, AI companions, all this is coming around. So I'm just saying, find a way to figure out how to utilize it.
The New Media Landscape
Mr.Benja: And finally, I want to talk a little bit about creativity and the new media landscape. If you haven't realized, we're all individual media entities right now. This is what social media and the internet and connectivity and AI.
And everything that we've been doing has come to, we're all little media companies. We're all putting out our own press releases. We're putting out our face. We're putting out our image. We're putting out our brand, our persona, and we're all these little media companies. And all the problems and issues that come along with media companies is now affecting us.
We're worried about getting cancelled, aka taken off the air, aka fined by the FCC, whatever you want to call it. These are worries that we didn't have before. At least, not in the same way. We're pressured to always be publishing something, to corral information, double check. These are things that journalists used to do.
And we have to live now in a way where you present things like the media. And if you don't, then you I don't want to say you don't exist, but real quick story, I went to a, I went to a lunch with some recruiters and some friends in the game industry. And while I was there we were sitting and talking and some resumes came up for Hey, listen, I'm thinking about hiring this person versus this person.
And it wasn't me, but I was looking at the discussion as it happened. And then, they showed me the resumes and the phone flip through them. Okay. That's interesting. And while they were going through them, one of the HR people said, Hey, look, this person this person has such and such. And so many so many Twitter followers, X followers.
And I was like, okay, that's nice. But the HR people who were at the table were fascinated by this. They were blown away. They were like, Oh man, this guy's talking about this and this should hire him immediately. And I'm thinking. Because he's on social media, you want to hire this person and their job really has nothing to do with social media.
That's what you're doing? And apparently that was, that's what was happening. And this is the new media landscape where you're, I don't want to say a nobody, but if you don't have an online presence or some sort of presence, what do you have? Do you have a job? I guess you do. Maybe somewhere with somebody.
But if your job can easily be overshadowed by somebody with a large Twitter following. Or Facebook following, or Instagram, or Snapchat, or a big LinkedIn profile. What are you going to do against that? We're in a new media landscape, and media literacy isn't really taught. Media fundamentals, the basics of branding, the basics of marketing and putting yourself out there.
Learning how to speak on camera. I'm actually grateful for Theo for pushing me to do this podcast. Thank you. I probably would have lost my skills at speaking in front of camera a long time ago but we've been doing this for a couple years now and now it's just now really starting to flow naturally where we don't have to plan it too much.
We don't have to think about it. We just bounce and rip off of each other. And do you have that skill? Is that something you can do? This is going to be one of the core skills. Can you get online, speak succinctly? Can you know how to count out beats? Can you do that? Say you're going to talk X amount of time and actually stick to it right now.
I'm over time, so I don't even know what I think I'm doing, but it's something that's on my mind and it's a way I've trained myself to think with the new media landscape. So in terms of creativity in the new media landscape, your media presence is part of your creativity. Now, can you honestly enter into a creative field without thinking about how you're going to present it?
