A tuxedoed drifter with a robot named after Thursday doesn’t sound like a gut-punch, but that’s the trick Gun X Sword plays—and we had a blast unpacking why it still hits. We start on Endless Illusion, where Van’s search for the clawed man who killed his bride collides with Wendy’s desperate mission to find her brother. What looks like a dusty road romp turns, mile by mile, into a layered mecha saga about grief, choice, and the cost of easy answers.

We dig into the early arcs that mix humor with heat: Evergreen’s standoff, Bridge City’s smiling corruption, and Carmen 99’s razor-edged intel work. Then the mirror appears—Ray, a rival who embraces revenge so hard it hollows him out, with Joshua trailing behind as conscience and collateral. As the fights scale up to dragon-like mechs and the Original Seven step into focus, the story stops winking and starts warning. Michael’s decision to join the Claw hits like a plot twist you wish you could unsee, and it reframes everything Wendy believes about loyalty and love.

What makes the Claw unforgettable isn’t bombast—it’s the gentle rhetoric, the soft hug with a hidden blade, the utopia that arrives packaged as annihilation. We connect the show’s tonal DNA to Trigun and Cowboy Bebop while calling out its own voice: stylish, sometimes silly, and ultimately sincere about consequences. Along the way, we spotlight Priscilla’s small kindness that lingers, Carmen’s late confession that stings, and Van’s odd mix of laziness and sudden fury that reads more like control than apathy. By the end, we land on why the music, art style, and fight choreography age well, and why this 26-episode ride deserves a fresh seat at the mecha table.

If you love character-driven sci-fi, morally tangled villains, and mechs that feel like myth, press play and ride with us. Then share the episode, leave a review, and tell us: which moment made you realize Gun X Sword is more than a cowboy hat and a cool robot?

Hello, gang. It's another Mecca Monday for the Zone podcast. And let's go ahead and talk about Gunsword. The story is set on the planet of Endless Illusion, a place where rogues of all sorts gather. The protagonist, Bond, travels to the world, travels around the world searching for a man with a clawed right hand who killed his bride. He is joined by several other travelers along the way, each linked with the clawed man by a personal loss. Now, on the verge of starvation, Bond, sporting a tuxedo and cowboy hat, enters the church looking for food, but he encounters some thieves after a 12-year-old girl named Wendy Garrett or Garnet, uh, however, you know, uh still pronounce it differently. After being rescued, Wendy graciously brings him back to her hometown of Evergreen, where she treats him to lunch. It is explained that Evergreen is under siege by a gang called the Wild Bunch, led by their boss, Lucky Roulette. Van uh I'm sorry, in advance, if I like they pronounce it Vaughn, and it's like spell like Van, you know. Uh Vaughn declines to help, but Wednesday persistently chased after him, even offering to be his bride. And you know, I'm saving that for later. Uh luckily later attacks the town with the his armor. Van finally summons his armor Dan after Wednesday, not Wednesday, Wendy is threatened, and Lucky attacks Van or Vaughn, goddamn, dishonorably from behind. After Vaughn defeats Lucky Roulette, Vaughn and Wendy confront Lucky on the whereabouts of Michael Garrett, uh Wendy's brother. Lucky says he sold Michael to a man with a claw on his right hand a week past, but he doesn't know where they are now. The next day, when Vaughn leaves to continue his search for the claw, Wendy informs him that he that she is joining him because she intends to rescue her brother. Nothing Vaughn can say will convince her otherwise, whether he likes it or not, and he doesn't, he has a companion. Honestly, y'all, I had like a whole bunch of notes for this anime. So just to save y'all some time, I'm just gonna try to blaze through them all. So essentially, uh Bon and Wendy go into another town called Bridge City. Uh he comes across uh this curvy mercenary named Carmen Mendoza, nicknamed Carmen 99, who offers their services as an information broker. They deal with this guy called um Baron Mayer, the mayor of that town, and he's building an immense armor while under the guise of preparing a bridge and you know just doing building the shit in the background, and then ends up defeating him. Then Vaughn and Winnie uh find themselves in the city inside a ravine after that, ruled by identical twin sisters who hate each other. That's when they meet up with Ray, who is also after the claw man. But the difference between Vaughn and Ray is that uh with Ray, his desire for revenge has turned him cold, heartless, determined to see by any cause, whether it to be himself or to others. So he's the kind of guy where it's like, oh, this guy's kind of a piece of work. Imagine if Vaughn was any different. And I'm gonna talk about Vaughn's personality at the end of all this. Uh they end up fighting this dragon like mech at one point uh while they were um dealing with Ray. We also get introduced to Ray's brother Joshua, who, you know, just running behind Ray, you know, just trying to be a supportive little brother. But Ray just like, just get the fuck out of here. And Joshua ends up tagging along with uh Vaughn and Wendy. Uh we do see Carmen coming in and out of the plot. So like she's not really with the group, but she's like part of the main cast. And the main three hitchhike with Carmen to her hometown. So Vaughn can see about engineer that can be able to um data dis recover from the dragon armor that might lead to the claw man. There was a whole bunch of shit going on in this town where uh a girl there was growing flowers that was being uh detrimental to the health of some of the folks, even though, you know, trying to help, but also causing a lot of the problems that was happening in this town. Uh fast forwarding to when they the main trio arrived to Zonic's um junction, uh, Wendy finds Michael, but come to find out that Michael decided to join the claw in his endeavors. And that's the funny thing about the claw. Like, he's this old man that you wouldn't think would be up to something, but he is. And that's when we realize that halfway into the series, it becomes Vaughn with his uh armor. Keep in mind, armor are giant mechs, right? And I like how these original seven not only are modeled after different weapons, but they're also named after the different days of the week, like Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, um, whatnot. Dan, uh Vaughn's armor is Thursday, and the claw has the birthday suit, I want to say. I'm just calling it the birthday suit. And essentially, Vaughn is tussling with these neo-originals while Wendy, Carmen, Joshua tries to help. Uh, we also get introduced to Priscilla, who has her own armor, and crazy enough, just because she offered Vaughn some bread crust, she remembered her name easily, but couldn't be bothered to remember Wendy or Carmen. And by the way, before I forget, I like how it's funny how Carmen reveals at the end of the anime that oh, she had a crush on Vaughn, but Vaughn was like, wait, what? Uh so that just makes it even funnier. Yeah, like this is a whole bunch of shit going down, and I honestly don't want to ruin too much of the experience for it because this is one of those anime that I really want people to watch. Like, for sorry, there is um there is um fun facts that I would like to talk about. So keep in mind that Gunsword is really old, like back in 2005. So it's almost old enough to drink, and the way it plays out, it kind of gets compared to Trigun, you know how Vaughn is kind of like Vash, but the thing is, Vaughn is more like uh a pacifist, while Vaughn is just being lazy, and it's not on this series is not only inspired by mecha like Voltron, but it also has like Hollywood movies like Independence Day um being peppered. Hell, there's even a reference to Scarface in one of these episodes. At first, the first episode does have a violent style, but uh after that, up until the halfway point, it gets more calm and like more like a thing to do every episode. But um half half these villains um in the first half is more like the hilarious gag characters until we get to Claw and the neo-originals, that's when things get serious. So it's kind of funny how it's like that because Triagun is also the same to where it just feels like a whole bunch of one-off adventures and silliness up until the halfway point when uh Bash had to go up against Million Knives and his folks. But yeah, like a whole bunch of shit goes down, and I try not to ruin too much for you for everybody, even though I had like a whole bunch of notes, but I'm like, you know what? And and let's just try to keep it simple. But dare I say that this anime is on my mecha anime story pack now, now that I'm watching it again, because keep in mind, I watched this a while ago, back when I was like binging a whole bunch of anime, and I remember liking this anime, and I re-watched it now, and I'm like, now I remember why I like it because a whole bunch of things that happened, like it kind of gives me that cowboy bebop uh tri-gun type vibe, uh, with of course it's like mech vice, and look, Bond, he's like this very interesting character. He's lethargic, lanky, murders food with an excessive amount of condiments. Like he'll just put all the commandments on. Like he can't handle liquor, and also he seen laid back up until it comes out to the call, and then all of a sudden, he just switches a switch just flip and he just starts getting angry and shit. Wendy, she's a real ride or die, even though she's a little too young to give herself away as a wife. And speaking of white foods, I love seeing fine shit, Carmen, every time she pops up in the story. And I do like how the claw is the type of villain that you wouldn't think is all that villains until you listen to him enough to see how diabolical he is. Like, at first, you're thinking, oh well, I just want everybody to be nice to each other, and let's just live in peace. But he's plotting genocide, and crazy enough, like when he'll get like mad at somebody, he'll be like, Hey, it's all good, just give me a hug. And then he's like kind of hugging the little two type with that claw of his, and then next thing you know, like, oh no, I killed somebody. Why does this keep happening? I'm like, bruh, bruh. Good music, the artwork did age fairly well, the action is great, the designs for the demo armors have a unique charm dialogue, and there's enough mystery to keep me invested in the finale. It's maybe only 26 episodes, but it's definitely not a simple story. And on that note, I will give Gunsword an 8 out of 10. Go watch it. Like, I'm not gonna ruin any more than I said already. Just please, just just please, go watch it. With that being said, I'm gonna go ahead and zone up out of here. Have yourself a good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night. But ultimately, do take it easy and you know, stay nerdy. Remember that great things are coming.
