A magical girl tournament with giant robots sounds like pure hype until Grand Belm starts pulling the floor out from under everyone. We’re back on Mecha Monday with Jeff Like a Stream, digging into an anime where magic was once so dangerous it had to be sealed away, only to return through a ruthless battle royale. The prize is enormous: become the Princeps Mage and gain access to the power locked inside the Magia Conatus.

We talk through what makes Grand Belm hit harder than its cute designs suggest. Mangetsu Kohinata feels like an ordinary student dropped into extraordinary stakes, and her “I’m empty” insecurity becomes a real engine for the story. Then Shingetsu Ernesta Fukami enters with a colder purpose, training Mangetsu while chasing a wish that flips the genre on its head: winning ultimate magic so she can erase magic forever. Along the way, we get into the Armanauts look and feel, including the super-deformed Gundam energy that makes the mecha memorable.

The darker turns are where the conversation lives: the reveal that the game is rigged, the idea that some competitors are set up to lose, and the brutal consequence that defeated girls can be erased from reality. We also unpack Anna Fugo’s jealousy-driven spiral and why her story lands like tragedy more than simple villainy. If you’re searching for Grand Belm review, magical girl mecha anime, or dark tournament anime with Madoka Magica vibes, this one’s for you.

Welcome Back To Mecha Monday

SPEAKER_00

What up, gang? It's Jeff Like a Stream and the Zone Podcast is back at it again with another Mecha Monday. Today's topic is Grand Bell. A long time ago, the world was rich with magic until the wizards and witches used magic to wage war on one another, bringing the world to the brink of destruction. To prevent this, a group of wizards sealed all the world's magic into a device known as the Magia Connet. Sorry if I mispronounced that. And since then, magic has been largely forgotten, and wizards have been slowly disappearing with just a few magical families existing all over the world. In modern age, however, magic is making a resurgence thanks to the Grand Bill, a tournament involving magical girls that pilot giant robots called Armanauts, with the winner becoming the Princep's Mage and becoming able to wield all the magic inside the magic connetus. Uh, we're following Mongetsu Kohinata finds her ordinary life forever change when she discovers that she's a mage and earns her own Armanauts, the White Lily. As Mon Getsu fights in the random, she meets other girls who fight to have their wishes granted. Now, this was it, 12 episodes, yeah, it was 12 episodes. This 12 episode anime follows a group of seven magical girls that pilot giant-ish robots. I mean, they're bigger than humans, but I'll just get to it. Like, point being is that they're fighting in these robots and uh battle royale where the winner becomes the most magical of them all. That alone piqued my attention like a mecha Madoka Magica. And crazy enough, I almost think that it played out the same way as Madoka Magical, but then again, it's been a while since I've watched the anime. So I might go back and review that. The opening any theme songs were decent. The designs for the Armor Knox units looked impressive and unique, you looking kind of like cute, like the super deformed Gundams. Like there was this one series that I watched as a kid. You know, like I watched a bunch of Gundam series, but there was one in particular called SD Gundam, where it was just basically the Gundams, but like TV form. And that's what the Arminox kind of looked like. Just imagine Mex but in TV form in a way. And there's a I won't say there's like a small pool of characters introduced, but ultimately they just end up being defeated and forgotten by as well. Like, imagine you participate in the Grand Belm, just bring you to realize that the game's been rigged from the start. Like, for starters with Mongetsu, one of the two main characters, seemingly normal high school students, suddenly finds herself being caught up in the Grand Belm, having no particular talents or aspirations, trying to be as helpful and friendly as possible to make up for it. But beneath all that, besides under the mask, she's very insecure about her being empty, so to speak. But after she meets Shingetsu and becoming friends with her, she slowly begins to open up and decide to help make her wish come true. She's eventually revealed to actually be an artificial being created by the magic of consist uh to help Shingetsu win the Grand Bell. Speaking of which, uh Shinketsu Ernesta Fukami, the other main character that the plot really centers around, is a mysterious young woman who moved back to Japan from Germany in order to compete in the Grand Bell. Although she's initially opposed to Mongetsu entering the Grand Bell, she teams up with her and teaches her how to fight, which leads to their friendship. She was once friends with Ana Fuga, which I'm gonna talk about in just a minute, until the latter's jealousy towards her magical talents ended their friendship. This led to her uh hate magic, resulting in her wishing for the uh she wants to win the grand bill just to erase magic completely. And it's eventually revealed that the magic economists already decided for her to become the princess mate to begin with, and the whole grand beam is actually just a test to see if she was worthy of the power. So, aside from imagine this, like you have six other competitors, uh, contestants, combatants, who essentially one of them's an arctic picture being, and the others, well, it's almost like they were uh destined to lose. And it's like, damn, that's kind of dark when you think about it. Like, you set those girls up for failure. And then Anna here. Anna Fugo, the perceived antagonist of the series, is a proud maid descending from one of your most powerful mage families. She was once friends with Shingetsu until she learned that she was brought in to become the family's successor over her, which led to her to try to defeat her throughout the Grand Balm to prove herself. By the time she discovered her mother wanted her to live a life free of the pressure of being a mage, it was too late as her jealousy of Shingetsu and obsession with beating her has caused her to fall into madness. She's the third mage to be eliminated from the Grand Balm after being defeated by Shingetsu, and afterwards, her existence was erased from the world, causing everyone not present during the battle to forget about her. So, in other words, Mangetsu, Anna, and the other uh participants, their families forgot all about her the whole time I got rearranged where they never existed to begin with, and these girls just had to deal with like technically not existing. It was kind of crazy. It was just it was crazy. Like, well, yeah. I wouldn't mention the other ones, but what would be the point? Ultimately, I know it's kind of uh dark and fucked up, but in a good way, just that my main thing is it just kind of reminds me of Madoka Magica a little too much as far as the character design. Well, at least uh main leads, where I swear to god, uh the main two characters look like the same, look like the um main character from Madoka Magica, but once again, I'm gonna go back and re-watch and review Madoka Magica just to get a more solid opinion or you know, you know what I mean. But yeah, like this one was okay. It just Damn. Wow. I would give this as always a 7.5 maybe an eight on a good day. But yeah, definitely as always a 7.5 out of 10. And with that said, that's all I gotta say for this time on Mecca Monday. Next time, we're gonna be talking about Argantia on the Bird Euros planet. Fucking success. Pronouncing names, and I'm sorry. With that being said, let me just go ahead and get up out of here. Have you seen a good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night, but ultimately take it easy and remember stay dirty and that great things are coming. Let me zone up out of here.
