Let's Get It, Let's Go

Hi, I'm Terry Lee, your Win Coach, and I want to talk to you about three choices you can make as a leader to help you win at the work you do and win at your leadership. And what does the win stand for? The WIN stands for identifying who you are, igniting your superpowers and nurturing your skills. The three choices I want to talk to you about today are choosing integrity over belonging, choosing confidence over confidence, and choosing our way over my. The first important choice I want to talk about as a leader is, is choosing integrity over belonging. And I get it. We wanna belong to the best team. We wanna belong to the best organization, we wanna belong to the best group. But if we're constantly only focus on belong. Over integrity. I think it comes at a very high cost. It comes at a high cost because at the end of the day, end of the week, in the morning end of your career, if you look at yourself in the mirror and you constantly chose belonging over integrity, you're not gonna like what you see. But on the flip side of that, if you constantly choose integrity over belonging, it's not a. It's an investment because that same scenario, at the end of the day, in the morning, end of the week, end of your career, and you chose integrity, you are going to like what you see. So always seek to choose integrity over belonging. something else that I think occurs when you choose belonging over integrity is you feed into a bad culture. And we see this often in many organizations, many teams is, is choosing belonging. And I think the biggest, biggest symptom or biggest evidence of people choosing belonging over integrity is silence. So I think many leaders, they'll ask questions, Gimme some feedback. What do you think should change? And if you're getting constant silence, there's a, there's, there's a red flag there. Because I think if people feel, if they say something, then they'll no longer belong, they'll be canceled, they'll be ostracized. And if you're not modeling integrity, people are not gonna model that back to you. If you're not putting out to the world integrity and you're only putting out to the world belonging. Habits, people are gonna give that back to you. So I, I think that's the danger. Uh, so again, choose integrity over belonging so you don't feed that bad culture.. The other thing is you sell off your values. When you sell off your values to someone else, that means , someone else is in control of your decisions. Someone else is in control of your brand, someone else is in control of, ,the decisions that you make. And you really, you want to hold true to your values. You don't want to sell your values. Um, because when you sell your values, again, someone else has control of. And then lastly, you fail the people that you're responsible for and you also fail yourself. So don't abdocate to belonging. Advocate for doing what's right, advocate for integrity, and that's when you choose integrity over belonging. The next choice I wanna talk about that's important for leaders is choosing competence over competence. And I'll say that again. Choose competence. Confidence and what, what I'm saying there, I'm not saying don't be confident in your skills. Don't be confident in what you know. But one thing's for sure, you surely want to be confident that your skills and your knowledge is fleeting and you always have to be in search of greater competence. That will lead to greater competence because if you rest on your laurels, um, you're gonna get passed. Different ideas are gonna come, Uh, people are gonna elevate higher than you because you stayed and got comfortable in your confidence. So always seek greater confidence because there's no way you know everything. What got you in your position now is not what's gonna keep you in your position. For the future. It's always changing and it's something I heard a couple of weeks ago that I think is, is very relevant to this and they were talking about the success and they called it the, the rent axiom, and the speaker was talking about success is not owned, is rented, and rent is due every day. And we can plug competence in here just the same as we did. Success. Competence is not owned, is rented, and rent is due every day. Confidence. Is not owned, it's rented, and rent is due every day. And when we pay rent for success, when we pay rent for competence, that means we need to invest time in learning more about our skills and ability. Learning more about the people we leave, learning more about our customers, learning more about people in general so we can invest in richer relationships, invest in a richer career. Invest in a better knowledge and, and, uh, understanding of our skills so we can raise our confidence level, but most importantly, raise our competence level. So choose confidence over confidence as much as you can. And the third choice I wanna talk about is our way over my way. And I'll say that again. Our way over my way and what I'm talking about here. Being conscious of having diversity of thought, cuz many times you get in a leadership role and you feel like, because I have this leadership title, I should have the answer, or I should have all the ideas, or I should make the final decision. And there might be times as a leader. When you do need to make the final decision, but that should not be the norm. When there's an opportunity for a decision and it involves the team, it involves the people you lead, it involves the people during the work. You should reach out and, hey, what are some better ways that we can do this? You know, what are some different thoughts? We all are reaching towards the same goal, but what are some alternative paths? And when you put that out, your team will give that back to you. But if you put. My way and not our way. Again, your team's going to be silent. They're not gonna give you the best ideas, They're not gonna give you the best thoughts. They're not gonna give you the best,, insights that they have because you've put out into the world that is, it's really about me and not about us. So when you give. That's what you're gonna get in, in return. So if you have the mindset of our way versus my way, you in turn are investing in your team and you're going to harvest the benefits of the best answers, the best work, the, the best use of, of their time when it comes to contributing to your team, when it comes to executing on strategy. So when possible, choose our way over my.. So those are three important choices that I think leaders just like you can win at the work they do win at developing others and win and nurturing themselves, and nurturing their team.
