Episode 52: MK Ultra

Luis and Angelo dive into one of the most disturbing programs in U.S. history – MK Ultra – a secret CIA operation born out of Cold War fears that America’s enemies had unlocked the power of mind control.  The guys break down the origins of the program and the rise of Sidney Gottlieb, the chief chemist who led the CIA’s most aggressive experiments.  They explore the use of LSD and other drugs on unwitting subjects, extreme techniques like sensory deprivation and electroshock, and infamous operations like Midnight Climax, where real people were manipulated and observed without their knowledge.  They also expose how the CIA used some of the most prestigious universities to conduct experiments that crossed every ethical line imaginable in an effort to erase and rebuild the human mind.  Along the way, they unpack the mysterious death of CIA scientist Frank Olson, the search for the “Manchurian Candidate,” and the unsettling reality that the true danger wasn’t whether mind control worked – it was how far the U.S. government was willing to go to find out.
