NC State baseball's first transfer portal pitcher, Wright State LHP Chet Lax, joins Tuffy Talk for his first interview as a Wolfpack. Before Chet Lax ever set foot in Raleigh, he was already making the case for himself, seven shutout innings against Tennessee in a 6-0 Wright State win, and one run allowed in four innings against Georgia, a team that went to the College World Series. That's the arm Chris Hart made his first pitcher commit in the NC State baseball transfer portal.

Layton sits down with Chet to talk through the full story. How NC State found him in the transfer portal through his Wright State coach who played at NC State. What his time at Wright State actually looked like, the highs, the rough stretches early in his career, and how stepping up when Sunday starter Warren Hartzell went down with an injury changed everything. What it felt like to toe the rubber at Tennessee knowing his family was in the stands. And what sold him on NC State the moment he stepped on campus and spent a full day with Coach Hart and Clint Chrysler.

Chet also opens up about his roommate and fellow NC State baseball commit Hunter Warren, three years as roommates, two years as First Team All-Horizon League teammates, and now both heading to Raleigh together. He talks about his summer on the Cape Cod League with the Harwich Mariners, what he's working on before fall ball, why his mound mentality is his greatest strength as a pitcher, and his personal goals for the 2027 NC State baseball season.

Then the rapid fire, favorite pitch to throw, strikeout looking or swinging, cookout tray order, favorite baseball movie (Million Dollar Arm — a first for this show), cheat meal of choice, what sport he'd play if it wasn't baseball (rodeo — his grandfather rode bulls at UT Martin), and the one thing Wolfpack fans should know about him before he arrives.

All fired up and live the Wolf Pack Nation, where a hell of a crowd from the first pitch to the final play. Tough talk. Let's roll today. What's going on? Wolf Pack Nation, welcome back to another recording of the Tuffy Talk podcast. I'm joined today by one of Chris Hart's first additions to his team, Mr. Chet LAX, transfer from Wright State. Chet, thanks for joining us. And how are you doing today? Doing well. I appreciate you having me on and doing good. No, it's, uh it's our pleasure. Uh, so let me. I kind of want to step back because you might be a trivia question one day where you or your teammate, Hunter Warren, the first one to to commit, uh, officially, like, I know, I know not about posting it, but like, in the backgrounds in real time. Was it you or Hunter? Do you know? Yeah, I, believe it was Hunter. Um, okay. Okay. Yeah, he he did it kind of, you know, afternoon ish, I believe. Um, and then I was shortly the next day, so. Gotcha. All right. Very cool. But anyway, one of the first. So we can call you the first picture ever. Oh, by Chris Hart. He'll be the first position player. So we'll get you. We'll get you some history there for you. But, uh, no, we're really excited for you to join the pack. Uh, since you've, you know, committed. We've had some other guys. You're starting to see your team kind of build out. Uh, first off, uh, just talk to me through the process, like how you got on NC state's radar. Uh, did you kind of reach out first, or did they reach out to to you? Yeah. Um, yeah. I mean, I entered the portal and, um, I mean, I they reached out first to me, um, which which was nice, I guess. Um. It's good to feel wanted. Of course. Of course. Um. So yeah. Very cool. Um, so obviously Wright State and there's some NC state connections there with Coach Sawyer. Like when you I don't want to get into like why you went into the portal and all that. That's that's not that's not important. But when, when you when you kind of talk to coach about, hey, like, I really think NC state's a thing. Uh, kind of like, you know, if you want to share, if not totally. Okay. But, you know, your guys's kind of conversation and, uh, kind of the, the words he had for you kind of going back to his alma mater. Yeah, yeah, he, uh, he texted me and told me, uh, you know, let me know if you have any questions or anything about NC state and, um, yeah, we we had some. He told me, you know, good things about NC say, obviously he went there and um, I've always, you know, playing under him for three years. I've heard good things about NC state. So um, yeah, it was it was good that, you know, maybe, maybe got that nod of approval. So. Yeah. Yeah. And it's good, right? Like it's again, people enter the portal for various reasons, but the fact that, you know, you kind of have the coach's blessing and, um, that's always that's always a positive in that light. But, uh, just kind of talk to me about your time at Wright State. You know, some of the highs and lows you guys, you know, went down to Georgia and Tennessee, I believe this year. Was it? Or do I have it backwards? Yeah, yeah. Georgia first weekend and then Tennessee the fourth. Yeah. And those were two weekends where you really showed out. And uh, I know that gotten NC state, you know fans like oh like like he had like I think he had like in those two starts like a 0.082 ERA, like only gave up one run in the two outings. Like you were very dominant in that, uh, in those environments, but kind of just, you know, how did it feel kind of going through like in those big time programs? Obviously Georgia's in the College World Series and, you know, like like you got a win against the College World Series team. Like, kind of just give me those. Those feelings there. Yeah. I mean, it was it was super cool to, uh, you know, be able to do that. And, uh, you know, I, I've always had the confidence in myself that I could be able to do it, and, um. Yeah, I feel like, you know, kind of. I've always gotten better, uh, every year. So I think that, you know, this year kind of really showed, um, you know, kind of, you know, how hard I like to work and, um, stuff like that. So, uh, yeah, I mean, my previous two years, you know, I, I was, I mean, I've gotten hit around sometimes. So. Um, it's part. Of the game. Of course, so. Yeah, but it was it was cool to throw, uh, throw well in front of them and, uh, obviously Tennessee, you know, being from being from there, it was, uh, had some family there and stuff. So it was nice. Yeah. Speaking that you're from Hendersonville, which I believe is not too far outside of Nashville, is that correct? Probably about 20 minutes. Yeah. Yeah. In fact, uh, we're actually going down to Nashville for football this year, and so we're looking forward to the trip. My wife's never been, but I've been to Nashville a few times and definitely looking forward to that trip. But, uh, yeah. So so you're, you know, we'll we'll talk a little bit about your recruitment process. Um, you know, you just you just committed a couple weeks ago, uh, like tomorrow, I think it'll be like, two weeks, I believe, is what you had mentioned before we went on air here. Um, just talk to me about your initial talks with Coach Hart and Coach Crisler and kind of what what drew, obviously, you mentioned that they reached out first. What? So that was already a good checkmark in that box. But just, you know, how your initial talks went and kind of what what made you feel that NC state would be your future home? Yeah. Well, I think first of all, I mean, when they reached out, they seemed very personable. And, um, you know, kind of, you know, just good dudes, uh, first and which was, which was good. Um, obviously, you know, like I said, soggy. Soggy loves this place, and, um, uh, so obviously I knew that, you know, I was getting into something good and, um. Yeah, I mean, obviously, when I took my visit, you know, I hung out with them. I hung out with Chrysler or not hung out. But he picked me up from there. Uh, sure. Um, and then on Saturday, you know, I was with him all day, so it was. It was never a dull moment, and, uh, it was great. So I really checked a lot of boxes. Very cool. And then kind of like when you just stepped on campus for the first time and kind of walked into the facilities because last year, um, you know, those facilities when you got when when you came in, uh, as an opponent to NC state, uh, like, it was like the second second. I think it was the third weekend of the season. Uh, those facilities weren't available. So when you walked in and saw kind of, you know, I don't know if you saw any of the construction that was going on. In fact, I don't even know if that building was even being worked on last year. I'm just trying to get my timeline straight, but just kind of give me your thoughts. When you were like, wow. Because I'm sure it's definitely a different feeling from, you know, Wright State. Sure. Yeah. Of course. I mean, yeah, I think that, you know, Wright State has. You know, obviously there's there's a lot of good going on at Wright State. And, um, you know, it was it was unfortunate, not unfortunate, but, you know, I it was a little sad to leave. Um, you know, they gave me a lot of good and, um. Yeah. But, you know, when we played there, uh, my sophomore year, it was a good atmosphere. Uh, obviously, you know, great stadium. Um, yeah, it was it was great. It was fun to play at. And so, you know, it wasn't wasn't too hard of a decision to decide. I wanted to play here. Yeah, yeah. No, like I said, we're we're we're thrilled to have you in your teammate, Hunter Warren. Um, I do want to shift gears a little bit and maybe talk about Hunter a little bit. Uh, kind of just give me, uh, some initial thoughts. Obviously, you've been with him the last two years. You. Both of you guys were first team all conference players. What can we expect? And, like, how tough is he to face in live BP? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, he's, you know, first of all, he's a good dude, awesome, awesome human being. And he's actually been my roommate for the past three years. So, um, yeah, he's he's a great dude. And and then on the baseball side, you know, great fielder, um, you know, really, he plays the game well in the field at second, and he can even play short. So, um, yeah. And then as far as hitting goes, you know, I, I'm a little biased just because he's my boy, but I think he's got the best hit tool in the world. So, uh, you know, just his bat to ball ability. And then obviously this year he showed some more power. So I think he's he's trending in the right direction. Yeah. We were, uh, Ethan Berry who, uh, I don't know how much you've started following any of the you know, I don't know how much of you are on social media or on Twitter. I'm old, so I still call it Twitter, but, uh, our guy Ethan, who's part of our team, he does Wolfpack stats, and he's a big baseball guy, just like myself. And he's done some, uh, breakdowns on both you and Hunter on on our Patreon channel, but he's super excited to have Hunter on board as well. And he he thinks Hunter's still got a little more power left in him. Oh yeah. To get over double digits. But, uh, anyway, let's. This is not a Hunter Warren podcast. This is a Chet Lacs podcast. We'll get back to you, but I just kind of wanted to sneak that in there for a second. Um, first off, are you playing any summer ball this year? I am, I'm actually up. I'm up on the cape right now. I'm, uh. I'm playing with the Harwich Mariners. Um, we started tomorrow, so it's great. It's beautiful. And, uh, great place to be at in the summer. So. Yeah. Is this your first year up in the Cape or. Yep. I, uh, my, uh, after freshman year, I played with the full count rhythm. They're based on Hendersonville. Um, just kind of wanted to go home and play a little more ball, and, uh, and then sophomore year didn't play. And then now playing in the Cape this year. So I'm excited. I'm, uh. Yeah. So planning to throw probably next, next two weeks. So, sir. Gotcha. Uh, what? Some things that you're trying to work on this summer. Uh, just, you know, uh, any type of pitch or just, like, location. Like which what's your main goal out of this summer? Yeah. I mean, honestly, I think that, you know, I'm I'm pretty, pretty blessed to be able to play in the Cape. Um, so I think I'm really just trying to enjoy it right now. Um, just go play ball and, um, and then when I get done, I'm going to, you know, obviously I've got things to work on, and I. You can always get better. So, um. Yeah, I really think that, you know, trying to work on my view a little bit, I think will help me, um, you know, and then, I mean, I, I like my off speed, but they can always get better. So, um. Yeah. And when you say work on your off speed, are you just talking about, like like disguising it location. Like when you say that. What are you what are you trying to achieve there? Yeah, I think like with my off speed, I think, you know, I, I have I'm confident in my ability to throw it for, throw them for strikes. I think that, you know, kind of when I get to those two strike counts, me, you know, maybe I need to be a little better. And so I think that, uh, you know, I can, you know, maybe, you know, get a few, a few more K's just from being a little better. And two strike counts. So, um. Yeah, I think that that's, uh, one of them for sure. Gotcha. Um. All right, let me see what else we want to talk about. Um, your greatest strength and weakness. Uh, as a pitcher. My greatest strength, I would say, is my mind. I think that I have a I'm pretty, uh, even keel on the mound. I might be a little bit of a goofball off out of the field and like to have fun and joke around and stuff, but, you know, when I'm on that mound, I. I really focus and, you know, try to, you know, just lock in. Really. I think that, you know, my mind really makes me the pitcher that I am. Um. So. Yeah. Uh, as far as you know, your introduction to NC state and your new, your your new teammates. Uh, have you have you talked to many of them and if so, kind of. How's the welcoming party been for you? Yeah, I met I met a couple, um, while I was on my visit. Um, but outside of that, I haven't really talked to anybody. I think, you know, a lot of people are playing some bar. Now, a lot of people are busy, so, um. Yeah. Yeah. Who'd you meet? I'm just curious. Uh, drooling fear. That was. He was. I think he was hitting in the cages when I. When I came in, so. Yeah. Got you. So just kind of. Hey, I'm just here. Like, do you pick their brain at all? Like, when you, when you come in, like, um, are you just. It's just more like a kind of a passing. Hey. What's up? Uh, yeah. I mean, it was I didn't really, you know, necessarily pick their brain, per se, but I, you know, I talked to them and, you know, had a conversation and stuff like that. So. Yeah. Gotcha. Um, just what are you most excited about? Coming to Raleigh, like? Is it. Is it just kind of stepping up in competition, or is it just, you know, getting a new a new change of scenery? Kind of. What is it for you? Yeah, I just think, you know, kind of a new opportunity. I think that, you know, when I kind of do something new, it kind of makes me uncomfortable a little bit. So, you know, I tend to maybe get a little better. Um, I think that's kind of how it's been my whole career, I think. You know, I played for a couple summer teams in high school. Um, stayed with the same high school. Um, but, yeah, I mean, I just think that a new opportunity, uh, will kind of help me grow. And, um, obviously, you know, there's a lot of good things going on here, so. Absolutely. Uh, team goals aside. Right. Because those are always first and foremost. But personally, kind of what are your goals, uh, in the next, you know, nine, 12 months. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think that, um, you know, I want to obviously gain a little bit of weight, get a little bit stronger, of course. Um, you know, throughout the summer, throughout the fall and winter, um, I think, I mean, I'm going to have to earn everything that I want, but, uh, I would like to start if possible. And, um, you know, I'm a win first guy. I just want to win. Uh, so, you know, whatever's going to help the team win and, you know, try to make as big of an impact as I can. Absolutely. Uh, I guess that is the goal, right? To start. You've pretty much done that, you know, at least at least the last year, I, I didn't really check out your, your freshman season where you were at, uh. Uh, have you always been a starter? Um, not not necessarily. Uh, my freshman year, I came in out of the bullpen. Um, I threw I threw one batter my first first weekend of college baseball. It was awesome. Um, and then from then on, kind of towards the back half of my freshman year, I started, um, I started on Sundays, and then Sunday I was kind of, uh, I was kind of the midweek guy, kind of like bullpen guy. Um, and then started started some midweek started. I was kind of the four starter, I guess, if you will. Um, and then, honestly, same thing. Uh, this past year, I, I was, I guess you could say I was the four starter. Um, still, still probably mostly, mostly going to come out of the bullpen. Um, you know, maybe after a righty or something like that. But, um, unfortunately, we had our Sunday guy, Warren Hartzell. He got hurt. Um, at Campbell. Looks like about the third weekend of the season, it looks like. Correct. Yeah. So, yeah. It sucks. He's great. Like he's great pitcher. He he he deserved to be in that role. And, um, you know, I just had to step up and try to do my best to fill in. So, um. Yeah, yeah, start my first start with, uh, Tennessee. So. Tennessee. Yeah. I was just looking at that, uh, I, uh, Ethan and I, like I said, talked about some of your numbers against Georgia in Tennessee. And I was like, Holy cow. His first start was. Yeah. Um, first road start was there. You looked like you had a home start against Kent State. Uh, but week before that. Um, yeah. NC state fans are very accustomed to guys going down, uh, we, you know, lost two of our, our main studs this year in maroon and Duden. Um, well, June 1st and then maroon, but, uh, yeah, you can never have. And I guess that's where my question is going, right? Like, you can never have too many arms, as you've probably been following the portal class that you're going to be playing with. Uh, we've gone really heavy after pitching, and now, I mean, today we just got a new catcher. So you have a battery, now you have a new battery. And then potentially Drew Lanphier. He has one more year of eligibility, so we'll see what he ends up doing. But, uh, yeah. Have you, uh, have you talked to Andrew? Um. Uh, what? I just told you you blanked on. His last name. Raymond. Raymond. Thank you. Uh, have you had a chance, or do you know him at all? I do not. Uh, my dad, my dad went to Mississippi State, so he was pretty excited to see a Mississippi state guy coming over. Um, but not I. I haven't been able to talk to him. So was your data baseball player? He was not. He he. Went. He just went there. Uh, after. College and stuff like that. So. Yeah. Very cool. Um. Yeah, I. Just. Uh, what would you consider, like, your best pitch? Because I think you're a three pitch guy. If I, if I read all my stuff. Yeah. Sinker, sinker. Four seam. So, you know, kind of. I'm. That's kind of another goal is try to differentiate those. Um, but yeah, I, I would say I really like my changeup. I think that that is, that's kind of my money pitch and, um. Yeah. Gotcha. All right, well, I want to play a little game. We're going to have about 25 questions here. Kind of a little rapid fire action. You've said you've been on, uh, on campus. So look, if you don't know the answer, you don't have an answer. Not a big deal. It'll be time to to experience all of these in life while you're in Raleigh. Um, what is your. So we kind of talked about it a little bit, but, uh, you said your. What's your favorite pitch to throw? It sounds like maybe the changeup. Yeah. Um. All right. Strikeout looking or strikeout swinging. What's your what's your favorite? Ooh. Uh. Ooh, that's a tough question. I'm gonna go strike out looking on a heater inside. When you bend their knees. When you buckle them. Yeah, yeah, I gotcha. Uh, favorite pitch to throw in a full count. Would that be a changeup, or do you like to go? Maybe five. You know, it's it's tough. Um, you know, it's kind of dependent on the hitter, but. Yeah, I mean, I'd say, you know, I'm. I'm confident in my ability to land all my pitches, so. But I'd change ups too. Fair. Fair. Uh. Most exciting. All right. Yeah. I think you're going to be biased on this one, but that's okay. We'll go here. A walk off or a no hitter. What's more exciting in baseball. I think. I think a walk off just because, you know, the game's close. Maybe a no hitter. You're kind of just like, it's like a six to nothing ball game. You could be in control. Yeah. Of course. Um, so, I mean. Obviously, but. But I'll push back a little bit here. Walk offs are a little bit more common than no hitters. That's true. That is very true. I think that I don't know, it's cool to hear the crack of the bat. Um. There's no wrong answer. That's the. That's the correct answer. There's no wrong answer. Uh, best walk up song. Like like you've heard like someone walking out, you're like, oh, that's good. Yeah. Uh, you know what? I'm gonna go with my boy Hunter. Um, his his walk up song this year. It was. It was a good one. Do you want to share? Do you let him tell that story? I'm trying to. I'm trying to get him on. So. Yeah. Yeah, I think, well, it's called mimosa. It's got some numbers in it. Um, it's kind of like a house song, I guess, but. Yeah. Okay, okay. Very cool. Uh, favorite stadium you've ever played in? Yeah. Um. I'm gonna go Mississippi State. I haven't played there in my college career, but I played there once in high school. Um. That counts. Okay. All right. Favorite baseball movie? Either. Million dollar arm. Uh, when they go over to India. Yeah. Uh, that's a good one. Or, um. Yeah, I'm. gonna stick with, uh. I'm gonna stick with that one. You know, I've asked that question probably dozen or so at times, and that's the first answer. That's the first time that's ever come up. So that's I like that. That's a, that's a, that's a deep cut, if you will. Yeah. Um all right. So. Well you're from you're from Tennessee. So I think they have them there. Do they have cookout in Tennessee don't they? They have to have cookout in Tennessee. Oh, yeah. All right. What's your cookout? Uh, what's your cookout tray order? Yeah. Uh, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go a burger. Cheeseburger. Um, some places, I don't know. It's been weird. Some places have the Cajun fries, some don't. Uh, but I'm gonna go with Cajun. That's true. Um, and then maybe a chicken quesadilla, so. Yeah. Mhm. Okay. And maybe some sweet tea in there too. Yeah. There you go. That was one of my questions. So we'll come back to that. But uh do you have a favorite pregame meal or post-game. Either one. Um, pre-game we get the or I guess we got the, um, the tropical smoothie wraps. Um, they're kind of. We we call them the Chipotle chicken fastballs. Um, pretty pretty funny. Yeah. So those are that's probably my my go to. Very cool. Uh, do you have a favorite cheat meal? Oh my gosh. Canes. Oh, okay. All right. I think canes might have been one of my questions on here. I don't know if I pulled that one out. I, I created a bunch of them here. And I kind of rotate them in and out. Pineapple on pizza. Yay or nay? Absolutely. Oh, okay. I'm a pineapple. I'm a ham. Pineapple. Uh. Excuse me. Ham and pineapple guy. Okay, if you weren't a baseball player, what sport would you play? Yeah. Uh, so my grandfather, he was on the first rodeo team at UT Martin. Um. And he rode bulls. I, I think I'd want to be in the rodeo. Or maybe golf, but maybe. Probably rodeo. Well, those are vastly different. Yeah. Yeah. I love it, I love it. Uh, favorite sports team? Uh, who was your favorite team when you were growing up? Yeah. Uh, I'm gonna go. Braves. Still braves. Still Braves. Yep. I, uh, I love me some Spencer Strider. I'm a max free guy, even though he's on the Yankees. Um, yeah. So, yeah. So I'm a race fan. Probably one of, like, 12. Uh. Junior cam and era. Let's go. Yeah. Let's go. He's my guy. Uh, yeah. So I'm actually from Tampa originally, and so that's kind of. But I live up here in DC now. Like the Nats have sucked for a few years, but it's easy to get tickets. Um, dream major league stadium depiction. Yeah, I think, I mean, I think Yankee Stadium would be cool. I also, I mean, just being a brave fan. I think the Braves, Truist Park. I know I can't, I can't. For me, like it's funny because I'm an older guy, I'm almost 50. And these name change, I can't keep up with the name changes of stadium. So I just go like whatever. But Braves. Fraser. Easy. Want to remember? Um. If you could face one Major League Baseball hitter, who would it be? I'm going to go. Let me go! Chipper. Chipper Jones. Yeah. Hey. How? I'm sure you follow him. Like, how fun is it? Like when he responds to these dads trying to get their kids, you know, hitting a little bit better and, like. Like, that's pure gold, brother. Oh, yeah. That's. That's just a baseball at heart. Um. That's awesome. Yeah, absolutely. Uh, do you do karaoke? And if so, what? What's your karaoke song? Um, I have done it. I've done, uh, karaoke on the bus once. Um. On the bus. Okay. We just. We just did, uh, I just did tequila. Yeah. I mean, you can't. I mean, you didn't even need the dang, uh. You don't even need the words. You just yell tequila right at the right beat. Uh, what's one thing that you want Wolfpack fans to know about you? Like, not sports related. Just something crazy hobby thing that, you know, like some niche thing that you're into. Yeah. Um, I like to fish. I like to hunt. I'm a I'm an outdoors guy. Um, I, I when I'm sitting at home, I honestly, I feel like I'm doing nothing, so I like to be outdoors. That's awesome. Uh, what's one ACC baseball stadium that you're looking forward to playing in? I don't know, again, don't know how much you know about the different ballparks or. Yeah, I think that, um, obviously playing for the Wolf pack at the Doak is going to be awesome. Um, uh, I've heard that, uh, Florida State is nice. I mean, I think that might be cool. I mean, obviously all these all these parks are going to be nice. So yeah, we yeah. With the stupid, imbalanced ACC schedule that we kind of have, I don't I mean, we won't play at Florida State District. We just played there last year. But uh yeah. Um I get it. That's a that's one park I haven't been to. I've been to most of them. Um, but yeah, they're kind of old school in that, in that thing. Uh, how much do you. We're kind of kind of done with the rapid fire. But, uh, just another question, like how familiar and how worried are you about the Doak stream? Has anyone talked to you about the dope stream? Yeah, I'm I'm pretty familiar. We actually, JP Peltier, um, he was on the. He was on the Raiders. Uh, he he found that jet stream out to left. Uh. He did. I think that, you know, I kind of pitched it one at right. Um, out to left. It kind of blew sometimes. It blew straight across the left, and sometimes it blew just straight out to center. Um, so, yeah, I mean, I think, you know, obviously there's there's going to be some, some boom boxes and stuff like that. So. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Last one for me.
