45 - Master Persuasion & Establish Credibility w/ Dr. John Banas pt.1

"Character may almost be called the most effective means of persuasion”
-Aristotle

Everyone has listened to or watch a speaker give such an influential talk they were immediately compelled to do exactly what that person suggested. But why do we suddenly feel this urge to do someone's bidding or act in a different way? Better yet, how can WE harness that persuasive power? Enter Dr. John Banas.

This week's guest is Dr. John Banas, communication professor at the University of Oklahoma. He specializes in persuasive theory, interpersonal relationships, how to resist persuasive messaging, and how communication affects relationships. He won the John H. and Jane M. Patten Teaching Award from the University of Oklahoma in 2017, as well as the 2019 award for the top paper in the Health Communication Division from the National Communcation Association.

Throughout this episode Dr. Banas dives into what makes someone persuasive, ways we can avoid being persuaded into following bad ideas, why lies and conspiracies spread faster than the truth, how our message design can influence our ability to persuade someone, how to establish credibility, and so much more!!

Make sure to tune in next week for part 2 of our conversation where we dive deeper into persuasion, we cover humor and why leaders need to develop a sense of it, interpersonal relationships, and the do's and don't's of communicating with you significant other.
