Montare Media presents this week’s episode of the Discover U Podcast: Thriving with Dyslexia and Anxiety: leading edge research and data. JD Kalmenson, CEO of Montare Behavioral Health, a growing mental and behavioral health company in Southern California, interviews one of the foremost experts in this field, the Co-Director for the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity, Dr Sally Shaywitz, MD, and her son, Dr Jon Shaywitz, MD: Medical Director for Montare Behavioral Health.

Dr. Sally Shaywitz’ ongoing neurobiological and longitudinal epidemiological studies of dyslexia at Yale track a population-based cohort from kindergarten entry to mature adulthood. They have provided cutting-edge, contemporary knowledge of the prevalence, precursors, gender composition, persistence, and long-term outcomes, (including the economic consequences), of dyslexia in adults. Dyslexia affects one in five people, and represents over 80% of all learning disabilities. In a recent publication, she reported that the “Achievement Gap in Reading is Present as Early as First Grade and Persists Through Adolescence.” This finding inspired her to develop a new instrument, the Shaywitz DyslexiaScreenTM (Pearson), to enable the evidence-based early screening of children for dyslexia by their own teachers. Dr. Shaywitz is the author of over 250 scientific articles and chapters, as well as the award-winning book, Overcoming Dyslexia (Alfred Knopf, 2003, Vintage, 2005). She is the Audrey G. Ratner Professor of Pediatrics (Neurology) at Yale.

Dr. Jon Shaywitz is a Board Certified Psychiatrist. He received his BA with Honors from Brown University and received his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School. Dr. Shaywitz completed his residency at UCLA where he was selected chief resident for the Anxiety Disorders Program. Dr. Shaywitz was the Director of the Anxiety Disorders Program at Cedars Sinai Hospital, where he was awarded the Circle of Friends Honor. He’s been the Medical Director at Glendale Memorial Hospital, the Medical Director of Behavioral Health at Mission Hospital, Laguna Beach, Mission Hospital, Mission Viejo, and the Medical Director of La Casa Psychiatric Facility. Dr. Shaywitz has published book chapters and journal articles on the treatment of behavioral health disorders, and is particularly interested in anxiety disorders and affective disorders. Dr. Shaywitz has completed fellowships at NIMH and Columbia University.
