The Reddy Kilowatt Hour
From Beautiful Downtown Merrifield in the shadow of the Mosaic District, it’s the Reddy Kilowatt Hour, presented Thursdays at 9 pm ET on Radio Fairfax (Fairfax, Virginia). Hosted by a washed-up college DJ that is demonically possessed by a discredited cartoon spokesman for the electric industry. Reddy J Kilowatt is your rock and roll servant, featuring alt-rock, progressive rock, soul, occasional punk rock, deep tracks, forgotten classics, and brand new, angst-ridden favorites. Inspired by the great FM stations and DJs of the 70s and 80s who played whatever they felt like, along with the old AM radio energy of the late 60s - early 70s. There's still great new music out there and we play it in the context of the whole history of both rock and roll. #rock #roll #radio #reddykilowatt #alternative #progressive #whfs #wmms #wxrt #wlir #kroq #wmse #kcrw #cklw #worldsoldestcollegedj #radiofairfax

SPEAKER_00From beautiful downtown Merryfield in the Shadow of the Mosaic District, it's the ready kilowatt hour on Radio Fairfax. Tonight we hear the latest from Rat Boys, TV for cats, fuzzy teeth, and Pianky, and Ponky, actually, not Pianky, and Little Oso, along with Michigan musician Luke Winslow King, who now hangs out in Spain. Also, music from REM, Iratian, and a young Canadian singer, Nell Smith. Tonight we also pay tribute to the late singer, songwriter, and guitarist Dave Mason. Came from England but spent most of his life in the U.S. He passed away a week ago Sunday, and we begin our tribute with one of his songs as a founding member of Traffic from their second album, This Is Feeling All Right.
SPEAKER_07Cause every night I have a strange stream. Someone locked the door and took the key. And even now I still don't wanna do why. I just can't waste my time, I must keep dry.
SPEAKER_03Gotta stop believing in all your lies.
SPEAKER_07I'm not feeling too good myself. I'm not feeling too good myself. But that was them and I did today. Can't get up here and snow, I'm here to stay. With a different name, it's a different face. You're feeling alright. I'm not feeling to go myself. Well you feel I'm not feeling to go myself to the self-mast. You put her on the teacher. Put her on the teacher. You put her on the teacher. Put her on the teacher. Do you see them spiral?
SPEAKER_06Coming up the wall. She went downtown. Get a rest of his house.
SPEAKER_07Let's not get along. Then what can they done?
SPEAKER_06There's a scorpion tangled in the lines made. There's a crab grass grow around my breast. You put it on the teacher.
SPEAKER_07You put it on the teacher. Put it on the teacher's dance.
unknownYou put it on the teacher.
SPEAKER_07Put it on the teacher. You put it on the teacher. Put it on the teacher's desk.
SPEAKER_00That's Luke Winslow King. Doing Teacher's Desk from his latest album, Coast of Light. Luke Winslow King comes from Michigan. He lives in his rain now. And in fact, he recorded his album in neither of those places. He recorded it in Italy. He'll be touring Michigan, of course, a couple times this year coming back home. During the summer. Before that we heard TV for cat. Where did the time go? Brand new single from Lemon or London Trio with a couple of singles. We started out with Graphic, doing feeling alright, and that was the only version of that song that actually ended with a question mark. That was the Graphic second album, which happened to be called Graphic. Written by Dave Mason, Made Maman, by Joe Crocker, and there were at least 25 other versions of it, including the early version by Dave Mason himself. Dave Mason and off and on memory of graphic over the years. I didn't even know.
SPEAKER_07There must be some kind of way out of here. Say the jumper to the bee. There's too much confusion. I can't get no relief. Mr. Spinner, drink my mind. Come and take my ear. None will ever mind. No bother under this word. No reason to get excited. But we had this whole many here on us. Who do the lightest buttons? But you would not be starting. So that is the top spin now. But I was here in the lady. While all the women came and went, servants too. Outside in the tall distance. A wild cat did brow to ride in with a broken.
SPEAKER_00And you also hear a 12-string guitar on that song. You may not realize it, but that's Dave Mason playing a 12-string guitar. He said he took a few takes to get that track right. We're featuring the late Dave Mason this evening. The wedding present doing Rasnek from their 2007 album Bizarro. They've had a really long career. They came from Leeds England and were members of the Lost Pandas before they became Rasnak. A musical based on the band's song's reception. A new musical premiered in Leeds, England, their hometown, last year. We started out with Fuzzy Heath and Twonky with Cut the Wire off their EP. Pretty and warm and dark and wild or from the Netherlands. A multi-instrumental solo artist, each of them are. We've worked together for a while now. You and I are listening to the world-famous ReadyKill the One Hour coming to you live from the studios of Radio Fairfax. I am the little easy ready J Kilowatt. And we are paying tribute to the late Dave Mason. This is off one of his biggest solo records. It was called Let It Flow. It's from the year 1977. This is sort of a title track. It's called Let It Go, Let It Flower.
SPEAKER_07I thought it was together.
SPEAKER_04I like sure.
SPEAKER_07So my music in the only one sees only when it's we're starting to have trust when he makes kids parents.
SPEAKER_04So this must be the place for me to start.
SPEAKER_07I have tried so many ways coming out. She loves all that should be away. It's very scary now. I like this just play with the moment. It's very scary now. You see the little things alive. They weren't just dry. Now we're running out of couch in the middle of the night. I think you know. I think you know. I think you know what's drifted. I think you know what's breakfast. I think you know what's true. The promise that you stay with me till the sandly sky. Like that telephone line. That go food, they go food, they go.
unknownI think you know.
SPEAKER_07I think you know what's that you know what's back to the body.
SPEAKER_09He softly says to me, I'll finish when you need me to hold you and you sleep.
SPEAKER_07As I take his in, I know just where I am. I sleep in eyes, they open wide, take him up the stairs again. It's just one of those things you know I wanna take control, but I lost in a dream where I couldn't find it all. I feel it all the back and call me over. Distinct as I walk in, washes over me. So it's great, call you concentration of desperation as a consciousness me. I do the landing to my hope for sleep. Every last impression I had before I turned away. Was feeling so damn comfortable.
SPEAKER_00That's Rat Boys, the song What's Right, from their sixth album and their latest album, Sing into an Empty Chair. Originally they're out of Chicago, they met Welton College in Notre Dame. They're gonna be playing July 5th in Richmond, Virginia, and then before that Nell Smith with Angus her album with the same name. It was her one and only album. She's a singer who had away in her graduate late 2024 in the province of Alberta. And so unfortunately, the album was released after who knows what would have happened. He was a great singer. Dave Mason opened things off with Let It Go, Let It Flow. The album Let It Flow from 1977. And if there was a difference between Dave Mason and the other members of Traffic, it was said that uh Traffic was about music, and Dave Mason was about song. Dave Mason ended up releasing 15 holo albums. He was known as a great songwriter as well as a great guitarist. Ironically, we could hit we have to disagree with his offering a little hello album. It was not written by him. Later on in life, he became a leading supporter of Little Hidden Rock, more recently known as Music Wheel. We can children of music. We are ignoring the era here.
SPEAKER_04Summer I tell and under things again. Took a swim in the neighbor's pools for beast again.
SPEAKER_07When I'm high man returned to you, garden small is something to be home. I love you, the way you I love you, the way you're looking for me.
unknownIt was four high strange displays. It was more in the middle of the man display.
SPEAKER_03Going to places far so far, and if that's not enough.
SPEAKER_07Anybody they don't know. You wind up in some factory that's for a time, there'll be nowhere left to go. Walk on to an empty house, sit around all by yourself. I know it might sound strange, but I believe you'll be coming back before too long. Don't go back to rock day. Don't go back to rock day. Don't go back to rotate. Waste another year at night drink myself to sleep and breathing, I don't care that you're not beautiful. Something that happens to bring it back. Don't go back to God. Don't go back to God. It's not as though I would need to be.
SPEAKER_06The way we felt at night.
SPEAKER_07But we don't even take a chance, try to sing your sea.
SPEAKER_08I know we've always been a long shot. I'm down to run all night. Travel through the rain and over. Just so I can make it all right. We might not make it in the end, but we should enjoy that bride. And we still have the song to remember. Remember me, right?
SPEAKER_07I'll read a written on that old heart. Take a chest, just win your sea. Ooh, wait and see. I'll leave you maybe with me.
SPEAKER_06I'll read a written on that old mark.
SPEAKER_07Take a chest, just win your sea. Ooh, wait and see.
SPEAKER_06I'll lead her in on that old marking. Take a chance, just waiting, you'll see. Ooh, wait and see.
SPEAKER_07I'm on it, maybe. I'll lead her in on that old mark. Take a chance, just when you'll see. Ooh, wait and see. Oh, wait and see. Whoa, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00Band of Hawaiians all living in Santa Barbara, California. The song Wait and See off their 2010 album Time Bomb. They're still touring. In fact, they're touring as part of the Where It All Began tour. They're in Silver Spring on May 28th at the Fillmore. And a few days earlier, there will be in Norfolk at the Norva Theater on May 24th. Before that REM, don't go back to Rockville from their second album, Reckoning, for 1984. And indeed, it was a song written by Mike Mills, the bassist, who didn't want his girlfriend to move back home to her parents in Rockville, Maryland. Of course, the big news with uh for on the REM front is that Michael Stipe is releasing his very first solo record after all these years. It'll be toward the end of this year. We started out with Little Oso from Portland, Maine, doing metaphorical Ohio from their latest album, How Lucky to Be Somebody. They're touring around New England and Canada this summer. And with that, it's time to unplug another Ready Kilowatt Hour. A reminder you can stream our old shows at readykradio.buzzsprout.com and also on your favorite podcast apps. We'll be back on Radio Fairfax next Thursday night at 9 with both rock and roll. Until next week, it's Ready K Kilowatt, your rock and roll servants.
