trying to diss you, but some parents you so want to control every little thing that your kid does, that even as they grow, you're trying to shape every environment, every decision and what happens is rejection. 00:03:22.393 --> 00:03:28.413 If you keep doing this thing, where you're getting closer to Jesus, you're going to start acting more like him and it just comes with a little bit of antagonism. 00:03:28.413 --> 00:03:31.925 Now, being like Jesus man, that's an interesting thing. 00:03:32.987 --> 00:03:36.521 Jesus is said to be the very image of the invisible God. 00:03:36.521 --> 00:03:37.865 It says in Colossians 1.15,. 00:03:37.865 --> 00:03:43.044 The son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 00:03:43.044 --> 00:03:44.828 What is this image of God thing? 00:03:44.828 --> 00:03:48.747 There's a theologian named Athanasius in the fourth century. 00:03:48.747 --> 00:03:53.723 He had a great way of explaining how to understand Jesus as the image of God. 00:03:53.723 --> 00:04:02.150 He said when Adam was made, he was said to be this he's made in God's image and it's kind of like a portrait was made of Adam and a portrait of Adam was really, in some ways, a portrait of God. 00:04:02.150 --> 00:04:06.084 You know what God is like because Adam was made of Adam and a portrait of Adam was really, in some ways, a portrait of God. 00:04:06.084 --> 00:04:08.955 You know what God is like because Adam was made in his image. 00:04:09.197 --> 00:04:10.221 But then the fall happened. 00:04:10.221 --> 00:04:17.824 And when the fall happened, human nature fell and got corrupted and corroded and Adam became something that he wasn't at all. 00:04:17.824 --> 00:04:25.488 He became vicious, he became angry, he became adulterous, he became murderous, he became all these things, and it marred the image of God. 00:04:25.488 --> 00:04:29.961 In fact, it marred it so much that nobody remembers what the original image looked like. 00:04:29.961 --> 00:04:35.600 The painting got so strange that everyone would try and they'd try to like, invent different religions. 00:04:35.600 --> 00:04:37.887 Let's try to get back to what the 00:05:17.744 This is what we're supposed to be like this is the man who always loved the Lord as God with all his heart, mind, soul and strength. 00:05:17.744 --> 00:05:20.009 He always loved his When we're synchronizing to Jesus, not everybody likes it and sometimes we're tempted to hide. 00:05:32.802 --> 00:05:34.605 Nicodemus was actually a good example of this. 00:05:34.605 --> 00:05:36.028 Some of you remember Nicodemus. 00:05:36.028 --> 00:05:45.726 He was a Pharisee, he was one of the leading people, and he was also a little bit embarrassed or ashamed of Jesus or something, because he went to meet him at night. 00:05:45.726 --> 00:05:59.151 He wanted to like kind of get near Jesus, but it was too costly to come out in public and be understood as one of the disciples of Jesus, and so he kind of hid away until Jesus had already been murdered on the cross, and then he finally started to help out a little bit. 00:05:59.151 --> 00:06:09.362 Have you ever been like Nicodemus, where you want to be Jesus's person, but you don't want anyone to necessarily, you don't want to flaunt it, you don't want to create any waves, you don't want anyone to know. 00:06:09.362 --> 00:06:15.362 That's one temptation that comes along with knowing Jesus, as you might be tempted to veil it a little bit. 00:06:15.362 --> 00:06:20.680 But there's another temptation, and we see this in the ruling class, the Pharisees. 00:06:20.680 --> 00:06:22.524 They were the ruling party and just so we know. 00:06:22.584 --> 00:06:23.906 Not every Pharisee was bad. 00:06:23.906 --> 00:06:25.711 There were certainly some good Pharisees. 00:06:25.711 --> 00:06:35.112 But when the Bible, primarily the New Testament, is referring to Pharisees, it's talking about the folks who were in charge and they were doing all the things wrong. 00:06:35.112 --> 00:06:43.829 They were supposed to be like the religious go-betweens, but they were giving an image of God that was not correct and it created very negative culture for the people of the time, the people listening to the Sermon on the Mount. 00:06:43.829 --> 00:06:47.754 They've had some really not healthy spiritual models. 00:06:47.754 --> 00:06:49.036 Anybody ever had something like that. 00:06:49.036 --> 00:06:52.367 You've been in an environment you're like I don't know that. 00:06:52.367 --> 00:06:56.093 This is the image, I don't know that this is what I'm supposed to be synchronizing to. 00:06:56.093 --> 00:07:01.651 So maybe you experienced something like these early listeners of the Sermon on the Mount. 00:07:01.670 --> 00:07:14.711 Maybe what they experienced listeners of the Sermon on the Mount, what they experienced they probably experienced the fruit of the Pharisees being so meticulous about the law that they forgot the people that the law was training them to love. 00:07:14.711 --> 00:07:26.624 They were so involved in the details that they missed the heart of compassion that God was trying to create and they would get hung up on little things and they'd miss giant things. 00:07:26.624 --> 00:07:30.235 They were so desiring to separate. 00:07:30.235 --> 00:07:31.961 They wanted okay, the goodies are over here. 00:07:31.961 --> 00:07:33.369 We're the goodies and those are the baddies. 00:07:33.369 --> 00:07:35.680 These are the pure ones and those are the not pure ones. 00:07:35.860 --> 00:07:46.380 And it created a culture of division where half the people walk around feeling like I'm just not enough and the others walk around feeling like they're super awesome and important. 00:07:46.380 --> 00:08:02.944 And they really focused on exteriors instead of interiors and they made everybody afraid, because if you step out of bounds, we're going to point it out and it's creating distance from God rather than closeness to God. 00:08:02.944 --> 00:08:07.172 They were trying to do something good, but it ended up being bad. 00:08:07.172 --> 00:08:13.127 Some of you might've had spiritual models who, many of them maybe, were trying to do something good. 00:08:13.127 --> 00:08:16.822 Maybe that was just what they were modeled and so they were just doing what they saw to do. 00:08:17.584 --> 00:08:21.702 But whatever it was, it created a culture that you began to suspect and you're like I don't know that this is right. 00:08:21.702 --> 00:08:23.547 I don't know that we're supposed to be divided like this. 00:08:23.547 --> 00:08:25.430 I don't know that we're supposed to be angry at everybody out there. 00:08:25.430 --> 00:08:28.322 I wonder if I'm not supposed to be afraid of them. 00:08:28.322 --> 00:08:35.893 Maybe we're supposed to all like, feel like family, and maybe this is supposed to be closing the distance between us and God instead of creating distance. 00:08:35.893 --> 00:08:48.826 Well, anyway, that's what they were like, and so the question for them and us becomes what are the characteristics of the kingdom subjects, and how do we do that differently than the ruling class Pharisees did it? 00:08:48.826 --> 00:08:54.428 How do we buck our models and do it in a different way that actually does begin to image the son of God again? 00:08:54.769 --> 00:08:55.711 Jesus has got our answer. 00:08:55.711 --> 00:08:57.443 It's right here, in verse 13 of chapter five. 00:08:57.443 --> 00:09:04.125 You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? 00:09:04.125 --> 00:09:08.014 It's no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 00:09:08.014 --> 00:09:10.166 You are the light of the world. 00:09:10.166 --> 00:09:19.591 A city on a hill can't be hidden, nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but put it on a lampstand and it gives light to all who are in the house. 00:09:19.591 --> 00:09:26.894 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father, who is in heaven. 00:09:28.080 --> 00:09:30.990 Do not think I came to abolish the law and the prophets. 00:09:30.990 --> 00:09:33.509 I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 00:09:33.509 --> 00:09:37.912 Jesus says hey, just in case there's questions about this, I'm not getting rid of the law. 00:09:37.912 --> 00:09:40.589 In fact, I'm fulfilling it. 00:09:40.589 --> 00:09:46.448 For, truly, I said to you until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the law. 00:09:46.448 --> 00:09:55.547 Until it's all accomplished, whoever annuls one of the least of these commandments he's talking to the Pharisees and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven. 00:09:55.547 --> 00:09:59.342 But whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 00:09:59.342 --> 00:10:06.221 For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of God. 00:10:06.221 --> 00:10:16.821 And we've mentioned before this had to make every heart out on the mount sink because they're like these are our best guys, these are the all-stars, and we have to be better than them. 00:10:16.821 --> 00:10:18.043 I can't even be them. 00:10:18.043 --> 00:10:25.708 And yet Jesus is showing a different way, a way that isn't by the way the Pharisees do it with laws. 00:10:25.708 --> 00:10:30.750 He's doing it with grace, and he says he fulfills, he fulfills it. 00:10:30.820 --> 00:10:32.866 I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 00:10:32.866 --> 00:10:33.288 What does that mean? 00:10:33.288 --> 00:10:38.331 Well, on one level, it means Jesus obeyed in every way that we disobeyed. 00:10:38.331 --> 00:10:47.611 So he was the perfect image of God and instead of doing all the things wrong that marred up the portrait, he did everything right and he gave it to us. 00:10:47.611 --> 00:10:49.094 But there's something else that he did. 00:10:49.094 --> 00:10:53.630 He made sense of the Old Testament. 00:10:53.630 --> 00:10:56.321 He said all these laws, all the things the prophets were saying. 00:10:56.321 --> 00:10:58.570 That was actually about me, in fact. 00:10:58.870 --> 00:11:04.868 Once he was resurrected, he appeared to some disciples who were walking on the road to Emmaus and they didn't know that it was him. 00:11:04.868 --> 00:11:09.668 He was kind of veiling himself at first and this is what he said to them they're kind of depressed because they're like man, you know the Messiah. 00:11:09.668 --> 00:11:12.327 We thought it was him and now they put Jesus to death. 00:11:12.327 --> 00:11:13.191 It's really kind of sad. 00:11:13.191 --> 00:11:20.027 And he says this in Luke 24, how foolish you are and slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken. 00:11:20.027 --> 00:11:23.532 Suffer these things and enter his glory. 00:11:23.532 --> 00:11:29.610 And, beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself. 00:11:29.610 --> 00:11:33.294 Can you imagine that's got to be the most awesome Bible study in the history of the preoccupied with creating divisions between people because some are better than others. 00:12:22.801 --> 00:12:31.782 They don't have to be preoccupied with their moral record, because Jesus Christ 00:14:42.965 --> 00:14:47.159 I'm more loving, I'm more obedient, I'm more walking in the fear of God. 00:14:47.159 --> 00:14:54.769 And okay, possibly, that's true, you're definitely going to find people that are further along than you and you're further along than some. 00:14:54.769 --> 00:14:56.998 But let me give you this illustration that I've given before. 00:14:56.998 --> 00:15:06.816 It's kind of like everyone's in a swim contest and you can say dude, I can swim two whole doggone miles, and that little pud, he can barely swim across the swimming pool. 00:15:06.816 --> 00:15:15.624 Now you might even say I know there's people somewhere they can swim 10 miles, but I can still swim two, and that's pretty doggone good. 00:15:15.624 --> 00:15:16.606 Doesn't that count for something? 00:15:16.606 --> 00:15:21.226 And the answer is no, it doesn't count for anything, because the contest is not against them. 00:15:22.556 --> 00:15:25.524 The contest was can you love the Lord, your
