Sunday coming up near Christ time and we have a Christmas or Christmas and just a little bit beyond offering that is going to go to all kinds of projects and things that really pull at our heartstrings, and so that's never an obligation. 00:03:12.645 --> 00:03:15.405 But I want to walk you through a message that's going to be good for your soul. 00:03:15.405 --> 00:03:27.984 But we're also going to mention some of that because I believe, as we get into a season of increased generosity, we want the Spirit of God to touch our hearts as well and help us remember that we're not the only thing happening around here. 00:03:29.145 --> 00:03:35.424 So you know, when someone comes to know Jesus Christ personally, something happens on the inside. 00:03:35.424 --> 00:03:38.611 They're born of the Spirit and they really become two people. 00:03:38.611 --> 00:03:43.311 Now there's the person in them that is brand new in Christ and they're becoming. 00:03:43.311 --> 00:03:46.545 They are a new creature and they're starting to act more and more like a new creature. 00:03:46.545 --> 00:03:54.681 But they still got their old sinful nature that inhabits their physical body, and it can be a tough wrestling match that's going on and I'm so encouraged. 00:03:54.701 --> 00:03:56.645 When I first read this I was so encouraged. 00:03:56.645 --> 00:03:59.132 The Apostle Paul knew what it was like. 00:03:59.132 --> 00:04:04.769 See, I'm, you know, I've been walking with Jesus for over, you know, a quarter century now, man, and you know I've been walking with Jesus for over a quarter they're doing this, they make a mistake that you and I might make sometimes as we're in the wrestling match against sin, trying to live for Jesus's glory. 00:05:27.531 --> 00:05:38.028 They make the mistake of maybe if I just do the exteriors, that'll just kind of attract the favor of God and I don't really need to think so hard about what's going on on the inside of me. 00:05:38.028 --> 00:05:47.822 I'll just do the outside stuff, I'll look religious, I'll act religious, and that's okay if things don't quite catch up on the inside. 00:05:47.822 --> 00:05:49.065 And so they begin to complain. 00:05:49.065 --> 00:05:50.610 They start to complain to God. 00:05:50.610 --> 00:05:51.372 They're like God. 00:05:51.372 --> 00:05:54.567 You know we're doing all this stuff and here you to Isaiah Raise your voice like a trumpet, Declare to my people their rebellion and to their descendants of Jacob their sins. 00:06:20.500 --> 00:06:22.725 For day after day, they seek me out. 00:06:22.887 --> 00:06:29.129 They seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. 00:06:29.129 --> 00:06:33.391 They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them. 00:06:33.391 --> 00:06:36.880 Why have we fasted, they say, and you've not seen it. 00:06:36.880 --> 00:06:38.543 Why have we humbled ourselves? 00:06:38.543 --> 00:06:39.867 And you've not noticed? 00:06:39.867 --> 00:06:46.148 Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and you exploit all your workers. 00:06:46.148 --> 00:06:50.572 Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife and striking each other with wicked fists. 00:06:51.262 --> 00:06:52.985 Is this the kind of fast I've chosen? 00:06:52.985 --> 00:06:55.411 Only a day for people to humble themselves? 00:06:55.411 --> 00:06:59.810 Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed and lying in sackcloth and ashes? 00:06:59.810 --> 00:07:01.423 That's doing something strange to us. 00:07:01.423 --> 00:07:06.949 It's wearing really uncomfortable clothing and then throwing ashes on yourself to demonstrate, kind of outly, how grieved you are and sad about your sin. 00:07:06.949 --> 00:07:15.009 You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high, which is what fasting is actually supposed to do, except to add power to prayer. 00:07:15.009 --> 00:07:19.261 Is that what you call a fast A day acceptable to the Lord? 00:07:19.762 --> 00:07:24.286 See these folks, as they were trying to get God's attention and get him to do stuff. 00:07:24.286 --> 00:07:43.129 They were exalting the outsides without worrying about the insides, Fasting what we do when we're fasting is we're saying I want to take away a little bit from the physical so that the inner, the spiritual, can be highlighted and be the most important thing that I'm doing right now. 00:07:43.129 --> 00:07:45.000 I'm prioritizing the inner life and taking away from the outer life. 00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:51.326 I'm even going without food, maybe for a meal, maybe for a day, maybe for a few days, and I'm doing that because I'm asking the Lord. 00:07:51.326 --> 00:08:00.252 I want extra help with this, or I want to demonstrate sorrow for my sin, or I've been distant from you and I want to come back into closeness with you. 00:08:00.252 --> 00:08:16.413 It's not a necessity, it wasn't even commanded by the law, but it was something that they regularly did in order to demonstrate their need for help, their need for forgiveness, their need to demonstrate that they're sad about the fact that they don't always do what God would want. 00:08:16.413 --> 00:08:18.843 And here's the thing. 00:08:18.843 --> 00:08:24.865 We could point a finger at them and be like, yeah man, those guys, they suck, they're bad, they're bad, bad Israelites. 00:08:24.865 --> 00:08:29.033 Sometimes I'm willing to bet we've done something like that. 00:08:29.052 --> 00:08:36.601 It might not have been fasting, but perhaps you've posted something on your Christian girl Instagram and it was like a beautiful verse. 00:08:36.601 --> 00:08:42.000 But the truth is that was very misrepresentative of what was going on in the inner life. 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:48.729 There's posts of Jesus hugging the person and Jesus does hug the person, and that's absolutely true. 00:08:48.729 --> 00:09:06.301 And yet the level to which you're walking in anger and bitterness and contention with other people I see on the other platform you were like screaming at this other person, but then you're just misrepresenting perhaps not all the time, but maybe from time to time. 00:09:06.301 --> 00:09:07.947 Or you do all the religious things. 00:09:07.947 --> 00:09:11.000 You come to church, Dude, you go to the extra Bible study. 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:18.081 You got like three versions of the Bible on your dresser and you love it and you feel good about it. 00:09:18.783 --> 00:09:24.741 But the truth is, in terms of your character, it's not like that's always super important to you. 00:09:24.741 --> 00:09:29.773 In fact, you would say it's important to you but you forget about it entirely. 00:09:29.773 --> 00:09:31.403 You forget to fight for it. 00:09:31.403 --> 00:09:42.389 Maybe you even serve God you do volunteering and yet the truth is, my friend, you're so judgmental about how other people don't serve like you, and don't care about the kingdom like you and don't care about people like you. 00:09:42.389 --> 00:09:54.025 It's kind of canceling the other stuff out, man, Because, okay, you're doing the outward stuff, but God's like, do you think that matters if your insides are not changing? 00:09:54.025 --> 00:10:02.027 Do you think I just want performances or do I want you to actually become something else and do something else? 00:10:02.027 --> 00:10:06.703 And guys, you got to hear this because we can slip into legalism with this kind of a message. 00:10:07.625 --> 00:10:10.373 The Israelites know, and we know, they were right with God. 00:10:10.373 --> 00:10:12.948 Because of nothing they did they did not earn God's favor. the kind of fasting I've chosen? 00:10:30.128 --> 00:10:36.207 To loose the chains of injustice, to untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 00:10:36.207 --> 00:10:38.734 This yoke means oppression. 00:10:38.734 --> 00:10:52.688 There's people that are yoked to difficulty and hardship and manipulation and discouragement and down on their luck, and we could imagine in this time, in this area, there's poor folks, Okay, so there's just folks that they just don't have much. 00:10:52.688 --> 00:10:54.826 And God says do you not see this? 00:10:54.826 --> 00:11:09.587 There's, maybe, there's stewards, there's slaves of people, there's servants Not slaves like the ones that you might think in American history, but just a different category of slaves that they had, but even so, they're being mistreated. 00:11:09.587 --> 00:11:11.245 And God says do you think I like this? 00:11:11.245 --> 00:11:23.187 There's even foreigners, there's non-Israelites, and they're being treated like second-class citizens instead of being thought about, being cared for, making sure that they're heard. 00:11:23.187 --> 00:11:28.902 My friends, there's all kinds of stuff happening in their area, in their life, that they can see. 00:11:28.902 --> 00:11:33.607 There's stuff happening in that, where they work, that God is like do you think I'm okay clothe them and not turn away from your own flesh and blood? 00:11:43.292 --> 00:11:44.520 What is he saying? 00:11:44.520 --> 00:11:50.090 He's saying religiosity without social concern and I'm not after religious exteriors. 00:12:01.620 --> 00:12:07.754 And so he talks about here's what would happen for you folks that are praying to me and kind of complaining that I'm not doing what you images back of the pillar of fire and cloud that their ancestors followed around in the wilderness and he's saying I know you feel like no one thinks you're okay or no one thinks you're good or no one 00:14:20.327 --> 00:14:25.679 Number one using people for your own advantage repels God's favor, he says in verse three. 00:14:25.679 --> 00:14:27.403 You exploit all your workers. 00:14:28.586 --> 00:14:31.011 Dr June Hunt describes manipulation like this. 00:14:31.011 --> 00:14:32.061 She's a psychologist. 00:14:32.061 --> 00:14:40.727 She says manipulation is the art of controlling people or circumstances by indirect, unfair or deceptive means, especially to one's own advantage. 00:14:40.727 --> 00:14:48.284 Those who are manipulated allow others to have excessive control over them, the control that God alone should have. 00:14:48.284 --> 00:14:53.500 This is in some of our blood more than others, and that's okay. 00:14:53.500 --> 00:14:56.125 But we have to identify it as the hell disease. 00:14:56.125 --> 00:14:58.250 We got to try to strain it out. 00:14:58.250 --> 00:15:12.513 When we're manipulative, when we're oppressing people with manipulation, often that's emotional You've got Delilah. 00:15:16.866 --> 00:15:17.889 Remember Delilah? 00:15:17.889 --> 00:15:35.610 She's the girlfriend of Samson, the whack job who is super strong, and he keeps hanging with this girl that he's even like half aware that she wants to like get him captured by the Philistines, and so he keeps lying to her, keeps telling her no, that's not really the way my strength goes away, Delilah, and she keeps. 00:15:35.610 --> 00:15:38.224 She starts getting whiny and whiny and whiny. 00:15:38.224 --> 00:15:39.725 And she's doing this for her own good man. 00:15:39.725 --> 00:15:41.067 She just wants to be in good with her people. 00:15:41.067 --> 00:15:43.932 And so what does she say Finally? 00:15:43.932 --> 00:15:48.986 She says oh, Samson, if you really loved me, you would confide in me. 00:15:48.986 --> 00:15:49.850 What is she doing? 00:15:49.850 --> 00:15:50.892 She's manipulating him. 00:15:50.892 --> 00:15:53.764 She's just laying it on heavy man. 00:15:53.764 --> 00:15:56.048 Contrast that to Queen Esther. 00:15:57.071 --> 00:15:58.399 Now Queen Esther's got a lot to lose. 00:15:58.399 --> 00:16:03.167 Okay, she goes into the king and she knows I could die just going into the king. 00:16:03.167 --> 00:16:06.991 But I'm going to tell him this wicked Haman has got this whole plot to kill all the Jews. 00:16:06.991 --> 00:16:16.163 And she says hey, king, can I just tell you, yeah, many of my people, we've been sold for destruction and slaughter and annihilation by this wicked Haman. 00:16:16.163 --> 00:16:21.072 And I'll tell you, if he'd sold us only as slaves, I would have kept quiet. 00:16:21.072 --> 00:16:26.461 But because my people are in such distress, I've got to disturb the king. 00:16:26.461 --> 00:16:29.413 And she just explains it real sweet, real simple. 00:16:29.413 --> 00:16:31.481 She's not trying to emotionally control him. 00:16:32.164 --> 00:16:35.375 And, my friends, sometimes we try to emotionally control people. 00:16:35.375 --> 00:16:38.203 That's when we withhold love or withhold affection. 00:16:38.203 --> 00:16:47.690 Or we say if you do this, then I'll finally help you do that If you'll behave this way, if you'll give me this thing, then okay, finally I'll agree. 00:16:47.690 --> 00:16:49.219 And what that is we've got to understand. 00:16:49.219 --> 00:16:49.900 So we don't even know this.
