00:01:23.379 Thousands of people, as a matter of fact, have come to know Jesus Christ and yet, because the gospel is so powerful, because it crosses cultural boundaries, lots of different kinds of people are coming to know Jesus Christ and right as things are multiplying, right as things are moving forward, there comes a speed bump and it looks like things either need to change or they're all going to go wrong, because there starts to be tension between believers, and that's a new one that hasn't happened before, and it brings the question okay, jesus said the gospel was for everybody and it is going everywhere, but is it powerful enough to bring two divergent cultures? 00:01:23.379 --> 00:01:25.587 Even though they have a lot of similarities, they're still very different. 00:01:25.587 --> 00:01:30.391 Is it powerful enough to bring them together and override their differences? 00:01:30.391 --> 00:01:35.466 That is the question that is going to be asked the text is asking today and that's what we're going to be looking at. 00:01:36.721 --> 00:01:39.430 There were two groups of Christians that are in this story today. 00:01:39.430 --> 00:01:42.137 Okay, there are the Greek-speaking Jews. 00:01:42.137 --> 00:01:45.990 Okay, so they've come to know Jesus and they're part of the Greek culture. 00:01:45.990 --> 00:01:52.634 They've been around the Roman world and they've experienced all the customs of that realm. 00:01:52.634 --> 00:01:54.587 And then there's the Jewish Jews. 00:01:54.587 --> 00:01:54.968 We'll call them. 00:01:54.968 --> 00:01:57.188 They're the ones that speak Aramaic. 00:01:57.188 --> 00:01:58.743 They're the ones that stuck around Jerusalem. 00:01:58.743 --> 00:02:10.983 They've had their whole lives, they do Jewish things, they speak in Jewish ways and they're coming together now, folks from the they're called the Hellenists in the text. 00:02:10.983 --> 00:02:11.865 They're coming. 00:02:11.865 --> 00:02:15.112 They've probably come home to Jerusalem at some point, and what would often happen is people who are in the Greek culture. 00:02:15.112 --> 00:02:17.686 They would come back home to die in Jerusalem. 00:02:17.686 --> 00:02:26.170 So if perhaps, the husband died and then the wife is there but she doesn't have enough to sustain her the Jewish community, they would take care of those widows. 00:02:26.170 --> 00:02:30.966 Well, the Christians started doing this too, and as they did this, they began to notice some differences. 00:02:31.026 --> 00:02:52.808 Okay, well, there's all these Jews, these Hebrews, that we understand their culture, and then these folks are transporting their culture, and it's not necessarily mingling, we're not necessarily getting it right, and we who are handing out the money or the food to take care of everybody, we don't necessarily remember them, necessarily in the same ways that they want us to all the time, and what happens is they're really overlooking them. 00:02:52.808 --> 00:02:54.012 Ever felt overlooked? 00:02:54.012 --> 00:02:59.532 Ever felt like a little bit, like no, maybe no one's even trying to, but you feel forgotten. 00:02:59.532 --> 00:03:07.913 You feel like maybe somebody, they dismissed you or they didn't include you, or they didn't bother to remember, to remember you, or they heard you, but not really. 00:03:07.913 --> 00:03:09.526 They kind of weren't paying attention or whatever. 00:03:09.526 --> 00:03:14.526 And it's easy for our feelings to get hurt and that's a reality. 00:03:14.526 --> 00:03:19.365 People do overlook us, they do forget about us, and that can be hard. 00:03:19.365 --> 00:03:25.228 And there's also there's probably a negative response to that too, like there's probably a wise, you know we should engage about this. 00:03:25.228 --> 00:03:31.969 There's a negative response where we just start to complain and we just start to grumble, and that's what some of them did in our text today. 00:03:31.969 --> 00:03:34.996 So we're going to take a look at them and we're going to find out. 00:03:34.996 --> 00:03:39.991 Hey, can the body of Christ survive this potential difficulty? 00:03:39.991 --> 00:03:49.014 Relationally, chapter six, verse one Now, in those days, while the disciples were multiplying in number, okay, so things are going good, things are getting better and better and better. 00:03:49.014 --> 00:03:53.133 By the way, you may know or not, last weekend we had a record attendance. 00:03:53.133 --> 00:03:56.663 Our church right now is in a season of growth, so this is very germane to us. 00:03:57.125 --> 00:04:16.009 Right now, while the disciples were multiplying in number, there was grumbling from the Hellenists those are, the Greek-speaking Hebrews and against the Hebrews, the Aramaic-speaking Hebrews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food and they were getting sidetracked. 00:04:16.009 --> 00:04:18.033 They were getting distracted. 00:04:18.033 --> 00:04:30.511 See, something is wrong, something's happening wrong and the danger for you and I, because things go wrong for you and I, there's things that we feel left out of or we feel unincluded in, and then we can get focused on the drama we can get focused on. 00:04:30.511 --> 00:04:35.129 I'm having difficulty with this person and it can just become mind absorbing. 00:04:35.129 --> 00:04:40.247 Anybody that ever happened to somebody Like you're in a bit of a conflict and you can't think about anything else. 00:04:40.247 --> 00:04:42.266 Like you're trying to get stuff done. 00:04:42.266 --> 00:04:48.983 It's like, yeah, my head keeps going back there. 00:04:48.983 --> 00:04:52.055 I remember years ago there was kind of an elder statesman that came to me in the church and I had been in a conflict with this particular person. 00:04:52.055 --> 00:04:57.742 It was really absorbing me and I was talking to them and others about it and he just pulled me aside he said hey, man, I love you so much. 00:04:57.742 --> 00:04:59.988 You know, I know that this feels heavy. 00:04:59.988 --> 00:05:01.232 I know this is a big deal. 00:05:01.232 --> 00:05:08.184 You've got a lot of other people here that need your help. 00:05:08.184 --> 00:05:10.449 You do not need to have your whole mind focused on this one thing. 00:05:10.449 --> 00:05:12.702 Like can you just trust God with this and move on? 00:05:12.702 --> 00:05:14.788 And sometimes that's what we need to hear. 00:05:14.788 --> 00:05:17.283 Someone needs to tell us this is a distraction, dude. 00:05:17.283 --> 00:05:19.608 Like, yeah, it's important, but it's also a distraction. 00:05:19.608 --> 00:05:21.139 Get back to the main thing. 00:05:21.139 --> 00:05:24.466 And that's what these folks needed to do was get back to the main thing. 00:05:24.505 --> 00:05:26.588 So the 12 summoned the 12, these apostles. 00:05:26.588 --> 00:05:36.713 They summoned the congregation of the disciples and said it is not pleasing to God for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables. 00:05:36.713 --> 00:05:38.343 It is not pleasing. 00:05:38.343 --> 00:05:40.634 You hear that Like God wants everybody fed. 00:05:40.634 --> 00:05:44.384 God wants everybody, you know, to be taken care of and he wants everyone to get along. 00:05:44.384 --> 00:05:52.672 And yet they're saying hey, it's not pleasing to God for us to neglect God's word, even to do this, doling out of different things to different people. 00:05:52.812 --> 00:06:00.060 There's organizational difficulties, but even amidst the organizational difficulties, god says the priority is God's word, the priority is the message. 00:06:00.060 --> 00:06:02.987 It's the message of Jesus, this is what's changing everybody. 00:06:02.987 --> 00:06:07.033 This is the antidote to the hell virus that is loose in the world. 00:06:07.033 --> 00:06:14.428 And so the apostles they just want to clarify hey guys, now remember, there's thousands of these disciples now, if the apostles are being called in, it's a big deal. 00:06:14.428 --> 00:06:16.648 It's creating quite a ruckus for them to have to come in. 00:06:16.648 --> 00:06:22.226 And they come in and essentially what they're saying is okay, we don't even want to have to come do this anymore. 00:06:22.226 --> 00:06:24.949 This is an organizational thing and we need some people to run it. 00:06:24.949 --> 00:06:26.752 It's important, but it's not the main thing. 00:06:26.752 --> 00:06:30.622 We need to keep doing the main thing, and that's what they do. 00:06:31.463 --> 00:06:43.225 Now I want you to notice something, because there's a value that is kind of like a value in our world, in this text, and that is this value of equity, because we would look at this and say, well, yeah, that is unfair, like, shouldn't they just? 00:06:43.225 --> 00:06:44.827 Shouldn't there be equity for everybody? 00:06:44.827 --> 00:06:46.932 Shouldn't everybody just get the exact same thing? 00:06:46.932 --> 00:06:54.901 Yes, but the way that we talk about equity is not necessarily the same as the way the Bible sees the universe. 00:06:54.901 --> 00:07:01.685 Okay, so, yes, people, we want to take care of people, we want to help people out, but remember some other things that are true about God's word. 00:07:01.685 --> 00:07:11.365 God's word says you, whoever you are, wherever you are on planet earth, you are here on purpose. 00:07:11.365 --> 00:07:15.401 You're right where you are on purpose, like God put you there, and when he put you there, he was asking you to be faithful with what you had, whatever you've got. 00:07:15.401 --> 00:07:22.826 Yes, there's people that have more than you, there's people that have less than you, but wherever you are, whatever you've got, you take your stuff and you be faithful to that right now. 00:07:22.826 --> 00:07:33.048 Now, as you're doing that, you're going to notice there's people that have less than you, and that is supposed to prick your heart, that is supposed to make you feel something for them. 00:07:33.048 --> 00:07:36.209 That is supposed to bring about the best of the kingdom. 00:07:36.209 --> 00:07:40.471 See, our world talks a lot about equity, but the Bible talks about kingdom. 00:07:40.471 --> 00:07:42.848 We've talked about this in the Applause of Heaven series a lot. 00:07:42.848 --> 00:07:44.141 The kingdom of God. 00:07:44.141 --> 00:07:47.891 See, the problem is not that they weren't equitable, it's that they 00:07:53.132 --> 00:07:54.846 I need to go help this. 00:07:54.846 --> 00:08:00.184 I need to pay attention to them, I'm concerned about them, I'm focused on them, but it's because I fear God. 00:08:12.141 Sometimes our world throws up these incredible values and they say do equity for the sake of equity. 00:08:12.141 --> 00:08:15.052 No, do equity for the sake of the. 00:08:15.052 --> 00:08:16.677 Jesus Christ, who's transforming your heart. 00:08:16.677 --> 00:08:19.584 He's making you a new thing, he's making a living thing. 00:08:19.584 --> 00:08:21.588 So, care and do something. 00:08:21.588 --> 00:08:25.093 But that's very different than legislated. 00:08:25.093 --> 00:08:30.968 Everybody, let's force one another to serve some values that aren't really taking root 00:09:11.500 I studied even how to say this Nicanor, timon, parmenas and Nicholas, a proselyte from Antioch. 00:09:11.500 --> 00:09:14.664 A proselyte means he first became a Jew and then became a Christian. 00:09:14.664 --> 00:09:20.493 So what he wants everyone to understand is these are all Greeks. 00:09:20.493 --> 00:09:21.053 These are all Greek folks. 00:09:21.053 --> 00:09:22.998 These are Greek names and they're Greeks because there was a sensitivity. 00:09:22.998 --> 00:09:24.179 It's the Greek folks that were being neglected. 00:09:24.179 --> 00:09:26.845 So let's put people in The priests were attempting to put Jesus to death, but now the church keeps multiplying. 00:09:56.312 --> 00:10:01.537 They got back to what they're supposed to be doing and now even the folks that once opposed Jesus, wanting to kill him, now they're like. 00:10:01.958 --> 00:10:10.476 I think this Jesus thing is real, but nevertheless, the lesson remains sometimes we can't grow unless we're new in the equation and God says let's be open to change, because sometimes you can't grow and you can't progress until you're willing to change. 00:10:53.337 --> 00:10:55.625 And so what's happening?
