Even really experienced teachers can fall into the trap of"},{"startTime":556.378,"endTime":562.369,"body":"making some of these mistakes. And when you're in your class day after day after day, it's hard"},{"startTime":562.369,"endTime":568.361,"body":"to be reflective about your practice. So sometimes we just get into habits, and we do things,"},{"startTime":568.361,"endTime":572.397,"body":"and we don't really analyse why we're doing them. Sometimes when teaching is just so relentless, you repeat the same thing over"},{"startTime":579.406,"endTime":584.369,"body":"and over and over because you don't have time to be reflective. So let's jump into our 7 deadly"},{"startTime":584.369,"endTime":587.371,"body":"sins of classroom management. Shall I start the first one, Emma?"},{"startTime":587.371,"endTime":588.351,"body":"Yeah. Go on."},{"startTime":588.351,"endTime":595.431,"body":"So the first deadly sin is deliver a boring lesson introduction. So let's think about what happens"},{"startTime":595.431,"endTime":600.3870000000001,"body":"at the beginning of most lessons. You'll bring the kids together for some form of whole class"},{"startTime":600.3870000000001,"endTime":603.441,"body":"time where you you tell them about what they're gonna learn in the lesson and give them some"},{"startTime":603.441,"endTime":607.392,"body":"information that they're then gonna need to work and all manipulate or you sort of teach them"},{"startTime":607.392,"endTime":611.352,"body":"through a skill that they're gonna need during the main part of the lesson when they actually"},{"startTime":611.352,"endTime":618.412,"body":"do the work. So let's think about what happens when that lesson introduction is boring. So we'll"},{"startTime":618.412,"endTime":621.432,"body":"bring the children together, and they'll sit on the carpet or you bring them together for whole"},{"startTime":621.432,"endTime":627.399,"body":"class time, they'll listen to the teacher. What happens when we don't sound excited, when we"},{"startTime":627.399,"endTime":633.414,"body":"don't sound enthusiastic, when we keep repeating ourselves over and over and over, And when"},{"startTime":633.414,"endTime":639.446,"body":"we keep the kids sat there too long is that the kids get fidgety or they'll start shouting out"},{"startTime":639.446,"endTime":646.36,"body":"or they'll they'll become bored. And what we need to do is actually engage them in the learning"},{"startTime":646.36,"endTime":651.36,"body":"and not just keep them sitting there passively listening for a long time. The longer kids are"},{"startTime":651.36,"endTime":656.364,"body":"sat there passively listening, the more we're gonna start getting low level behaviours. One of"},{"startTime":656.364,"endTime":662.355,"body":"the things I've noticed, not just having observed, like, 100 and 100 and 100 and 100 of teachers"},{"startTime":662.355,"endTime":668.3770000000001,"body":"talking in the real world, but also having people give me feedback on my lessons is that teachers"},{"startTime":668.3770000000001,"endTime":674.385,"body":"tend to overtalk. What we tend to do is hammer the learning points over repeatedly over and"},{"startTime":674.385,"endTime":680.379,"body":"over and over until we're confident that 99.9% of people in the room have got the point to go"},{"startTime":680.379,"endTime":685.378,"body":"away and do the work. And what that does is it leads to lesson introductions that are just too"},{"startTime":685.378,"endTime":690.366,"body":"long. Where most of the children are chomping at the bit to go and do the practical part of"},{"startTime":690.366,"endTime":696.368,"body":"the work, we're holding them back. So we need to avoid we need to be aware of those weaknesses."},{"startTime":696.389,"endTime":700.422,"body":"We need to make sure that we're timing our lesson introductions so that they're at the right"},{"startTime":700.422,"endTime":704.3580000000001,"body":"length that we give the kids the information they need to be able to complete the lesson and"},{"startTime":704.3580000000001,"endTime":709.362,"body":"do the work, but not keep them for too long. And the other thing we need to do is deliver that"},{"startTime":709.362,"endTime":714.4,"body":"lesson introduction with enthusiasm. Like, we're really excited about the material. And this"},{"startTime":714.4,"endTime":719.3960000000001,"body":"is a problem we can get when we're teaching the same material over and over and over. Let's"},{"startTime":719.3960000000001,"endTime":724.38,"body":"imagine you're a history teacher, and it's the 250th time you've taught this lesson in the last"},{"startTime":724.38,"endTime":729.355,"body":"5 years. For the children, it's the first time they've ever learned about it. They're coming"},{"startTime":729.355,"endTime":734.4350000000001,"body":"at it completely fresh. And what we don't want to do is because we've taught that material and"},{"startTime":734.4350000000001,"endTime":739.437,"body":"we've experienced it over and over and over to sound jaded and bored by it. Because when we"},{"startTime":739.437,"endTime":746.379,"body":"open our mouths, if we sound like we're not that interested, then they aren't going to be enthusiastic."},{"startTime":746.393,"endTime":751.4010000000001,"body":"We're not gonna spark their interest in the material. One thing I've noticed by watching lots"},{"startTime":751.4010000000001,"endTime":759.369,"body":"of good teachers delivering really positive, exciting, interesting lesson introductions is they"},{"startTime":759.375,"endTime":765.3910000000001,"body":"carry you along with their enthusiasm. Your enthusiasm or your lack of it is catching. And if"},{"startTime":765.3910000000001,"endTime":770.4010000000001,"body":"we want to have a successful lesson, by often by focusing on the first 10 minutes, the first"},{"startTime":770.4010000000001,"endTime":775.4250000000001,"body":"15 minutes where we bring the kids into the room and we get that whole class introduction right."},{"startTime":775.4250000000001,"endTime":780.429,"body":"We actually set ourselves up for success. We'll set ourselves up for failure. So if you want"},{"startTime":780.429,"endTime":786.392,"body":"to set yourself up for failure, deliver a boring lesson introduction that goes on for a long"},{"startTime":786.392,"endTime":791.398,"body":"amount of time where you don't sound interested in the work, and you'll achieve your negative success."},{"startTime":793.436,"endTime":801.394,"body":"Okay. So deadly sin number 1 was deliver a long, boring lesson introduction. Deadly sin number"},{"startTime":801.434,"endTime":809.4250000000001,"body":"2 is threatening that you're going to give a consequence and then not following through. So"},{"startTime":809.4250000000001,"endTime":815.361,"body":"I saw a really good example of this recently in a primary school classroom. There was a boy"},{"startTime":815.361,"endTime":823.437,"body":"in the class, very unsettled, not necessarily dysregulated, but probably bored, humming, tapping,"},{"startTime":824.383,"endTime":830.357,"body":"rocking on his chair. It was really distracting for the teacher. The teacher had asked him several"},{"startTime":830.426,"endTime":836.421,"body":"times to stop tapping, stop rocking, sit still. She tried to redirect him. He'd carried on."},{"startTime":836.421,"endTime":841.409,"body":"He'd carried on. He'd carried on. And in the end, she said, at playtime, you are going to stay"},{"startTime":841.409,"endTime":848.365,"body":"in and pay me back the time that you have wasted in this lesson. And the boy looked at her kind"},{"startTime":848.365,"endTime":853.393,"body":"of shrugged his shoulders, settled down a little bit for a few minutes, and she continued with"},{"startTime":853.393,"endTime":861.3770000000001,"body":"the lesson. Now I was lucky enough to be observing also across the playtime, and it just occurred"},{"startTime":861.3770000000001,"endTime":865.4390000000001,"body":"to me. I thought, I wonder what is going to happen when it gets to playtime. And what happened"},{"startTime":865.4390000000001,"endTime":871.352,"body":"was 2 children had a bit of a falling out. The teacher got distracted and was managing them."},{"startTime":871.352,"endTime":876.418,"body":"She sent the class out to play, and the boy who was supposed to be staying in and missing his"},{"startTime":876.418,"endTime":883.383,"body":"playtime, of course, slinked off with the crowd and ran out to play. And the teacher dealt with"},{"startTime":883.383,"endTime":887.407,"body":"the incident between the other two children and sent them off to play, and then we had a couple"},{"startTime":887.407,"endTime":892.433,"body":"of minutes to grab a drink and have a quick chat. And what was really interesting was that she'd"},{"startTime":892.433,"endTime":899.376,"body":"completely forgotten that she told the first pupil that he was going to have to stay in at playtime."},{"startTime":899.3910000000001,"endTime":904.394,"body":"And don't get me wrong. We've all been there. We've all done it. But from that boy's point of"},{"startTime":904.394,"endTime":912.376,"body":"view, he learned that actually, Miss said he had to stay in, and, actually, she's not gonna"},{"startTime":912.376,"endTime":917.4250000000001,"body":"make me stay in. So I'm just gonna carry on and go out. So she didn't follow through on that"},{"startTime":917.4250000000001,"endTime":924.378,"body":"consequence. The other thing is that didn't only affect how he felt about the teacher. Other"},{"startTime":924.378,"endTime":929.36,"body":"children in the class, particularly the ones who were fed up by the lesson being disrupted,"},{"startTime":929.422,"endTime":935.412,"body":"will have also clocked that she said she was gonna keep him in and make him pay back the time,"},{"startTime":935.418,"endTime":941.375,"body":"and then she didn't follow through with that. So her credibility actually takes a little bit"},{"startTime":941.375,"endTime":946.419,"body":"of a nosedive there when other children start to think, oh, okay. It's all talk. She's not gonna"},{"startTime":946.419,"endTime":953.395,"body":"follow through. So what kids learn when we don't follow through with consequences is that it's"},{"startTime":953.395,"endTime":958.419,"body":"all a bit chaotic. Somebody might tell you something's gonna happen, but it's not actually going"},{"startTime":958.419,"endTime":964.4390000000001,"body":"to happen. And that can also be true of positive consequences, things like rewards. You know,"},{"startTime":964.4390000000001,"endTime":969.379,"body":"when you say to a child, maybe a young child, you might say, come to me at the end of the lesson"},{"startTime":969.379,"endTime":974.41,"body":"for a sticker, and then you completely forget, and they forget momentarily. But later on, they"},{"startTime":974.41,"endTime":979.4060000000001,"body":"remember, and they think, that sticker's not really that worthwhile because it was promised"},{"startTime":979.4060000000001,"endTime":984.398,"body":"to me and then forgotten all about it, so it didn't have any status. So it's really, really"},{"startTime":984.398,"endTime":991.388,"body":"important that we set clear boundaries. If you say that something is going to happen, you have"},{"startTime":991.388,"endTime":997.438,"body":"to do everything in your power to make that happen. That's important for all children, including"},{"startTime":998.376,"endTime":1006.394,"body":"those with underlying conditions, whether that's ADHD or autism, and also children with a history"},{"startTime":1006.394,"endTime":1014.37,"body":"of trauma, children with attachment difficulties. They need to feel and believe that you are"},{"startTime":1014.37,"endTime":1019.404,"body":"reliable and trustworthy. So when you say something is going to happen, you make it happen."},{"startTime":1019.418,"endTime":1026.405,"body":"And as always, it's not perfectly clear cut because although you do have to be reliable and"},{"startTime":1026.405,"endTime":1032.421,"body":"consistent, you've also got to use your common sense and your knowledge of the pupils in front"},{"startTime":1032.421,"endTime":1038.427,"body":"of you and allow a little bit of flexibility sometimes as well. So it's hard to get the balance"},{"startTime":1038.427,"endTime":1043.401,"body":"right, but by and large, if you say something's gonna happen, it's got to happen. If there are"},{"startTime":1043.401,"endTime":1048.402,"body":"then extenuating circumstances, which means that you do have to be a bit flexible, then that's"},{"startTime":1048.402,"endTime":1053.423,"body":"okay. But your intention should always be to see things through, and that's how the kids know"},{"startTime":1053.423,"endTime":1055.393,"body":"that you are fair and consistent."},{"startTime":1055.439,"endTime":1059.417,"body":"So Emma's touched on the next one. So number 2 was if you say you're gonna give a consequence,"},{"startTime":1059.431,"endTime":1065.423,"body":"then don't do it. That's the deadly sin. And number 3 is say your issue a reward and then don't"},{"startTime":1065.423,"endTime":1070.379,"body":"do it. And Emma's given one example. I'd like to give you an example from my teaching career,"},{"startTime":1070.379,"endTime":1076.354,"body":"actually, and to show the impact of that mistake. I remember working with one class once, and"},{"startTime":1076.354,"endTime":1080.386,"body":"they love to play the game heads down, thumbs up. It's a game it's a quieting game, actually."},{"startTime":1080.386,"endTime":1084.436,"body":"It's a really good calming game that you play with the whole class and everyone in the class"},{"startTime":1084.436,"endTime":1088.364,"body":"puts their head down. They close their eyes. They put one thumb in the air, and you have some"},{"startTime":1088.364,"endTime":1093.414,"body":"people at the front of the room, say 3 or 4 kids, and they creep around the classroom, and each"},{"startTime":1093.414,"endTime":1099.391,"body":"child puts down one thumb. The end of the game, there are you say you got 30 kids. You've got"},{"startTime":1099.391,"endTime":1104.395,"body":"4 children who've had their thumb put down, and then they have to guess which person chose them"},{"startTime":1104.395,"endTime":1108.426,"body":"from the the sound of the footsteps and the noises they heard. That if they put in extra"},{"startTime":1157.425,"endTime":1163.377,"body":"effort and work towards something, and I promise them some sort of reward to motivate that,"},{"startTime":1163.415,"endTime":1168.407,"body":"then they've learned that I don't always follow through. And that will make them doubt me in"},{"startTime":1168.407,"endTime":1174.3929999999998,"body":"the future. That will make them doubt whether it's worth putting in the investment and trying"},{"startTime":1174.399,"endTime":1178.4279999999999,"body":"hard to achieve that goal. It's gonna make it harder to motivate them in the future, and that"},{"startTime":1178.4279999999999,"endTime":1182.436,"body":"will get harder and harder if I do that more and more in the future. There was a really interesting"},{"startTime":1182.436,"endTime":1186.395,"body":"study. There's something called the marshmallow test, which is really well known. We've spoken"},{"startTime":1186.395,"endTime":1190.442,"body":"about it on the podcast before, which is if you get a child in a room, say the child is about"},{"startTime":1190.442,"endTime":1195.375,"body":"sort of 4 years old, and you you put a cookie or a big marshmallow in front of them, and you"},{"startTime":1195.375,"endTime":1200.408,"body":"say, you can have that marshmallow or cookie at any time. But if you can wait for 10 minutes,"},{"startTime":1200.4299999999998,"endTime":1205.3909999999998,"body":"then I'll come back and I'll give you another cookie or another marshmallow. So the idea is"},{"startTime":1205.3909999999998,"endTime":1210.4189999999999,"body":"the child learns delayed gratification. If they can wait that 10 minutes, then a bigger reward"},{"startTime":1210.4189999999999,"endTime":1215.3799999999999,"body":"comes or they can take the cookie now and get a smaller reward. And what's really interesting"},{"startTime":1215.3799999999999,"endTime":1219.414,"body":"is they're all people have made all sorts of comments about that study. But what researchers"},{"startTime":1220.3709999999999,"endTime":1227.3629999999998,"body":"found was if the researcher on day 1 did that study with the children and they promised that"},{"startTime":1227.3709999999999,"endTime":1232.3509999999999,"body":"follow-up reward. So the child hung on. They restrained their impulses, and they expected the"},{"startTime":1232.3509999999999,"endTime":1236.447,"body":"second marshmallow to come. And then the researcher walks into the room and says, oh, I'm sorry."},{"startTime":1236.447,"endTime":1241.435,"body":"We're out of marshmallows or cookies or whatever it is. I don't have one to give you. Then when"},{"startTime":1241.435,"endTime":1248.375,"body":"you follow that up a few days later and put the child through the test again, they are way,"},{"startTime":1248.375,"endTime":1252.4389999999999,"body":"way, way more likely just to eat the first marshmallow because they don't believe you're gonna"},{"startTime":1252.4389999999999,"endTime":1259.355,"body":"follow through with the reward. So if we're gonna motivate kids with things like exciting rewards,"},{"startTime":1259.356,"endTime":1264.384,"body":"then they have to believe, just as they have to believe we'll implement consequences and boundaries,"},{"startTime":1264.396,"endTime":1269.408,"body":"they have to believe in us as teachers and adults that we will follow through with the rewards"},{"startTime":1269.408,"endTime":1274.3819999999998,"body":"that we promised them or the rewards will be ineffective. So if you want terrible classroom"},{"startTime":1274.3819999999998,"endTime":1277.427,"body":"behavior, say you'll issue a reward and then don't do it."},{"startTime":1278.4289999999999,"endTime":1284.414,"body":"Okay. So the first one was deliver a boring lesson introduction. The second sin was threaten"},{"startTime":1284.414,"endTime":1289.406,"body":"a consequence and don't follow through. The third one is say that you're going to reward the"},{"startTime":1289.406,"endTime":1294.418,"body":"children for something and then don't follow that through either. And the 4th deadly sin, a"},{"startTime":1294.418,"endTime":1303.405,"body":"little bit contentious, but the 4th one is give everybody exactly the same work. Now we've been"},{"startTime":1303.405,"endTime":1309.365,"body":"around for a long time in education, and things come and go. At the moment, especially in the"},{"startTime":1309.365,"endTime":1314.386,"body":"UK, there is this leaning towards all of the children moving through the curriculum at the same"},{"startTime":1314.386,"endTime":1321.434,"body":"pace, which might look like everybody having the same work. However, we all know within your"},{"startTime":1321.434,"endTime":1328.426,"body":"class of children, they are going to be at different stages with different subjects. They're"},{"startTime":1328.426,"endTime":1335.365,"body":"gonna have different strengths, different abilities. If everybody has got exactly the same task,"},{"startTime":1335.443,"endTime":1341.355,"body":"it's going to be difficult for everybody to achieve that and for it to be pitched at the right"},{"startTime":1341.355,"endTime":1347.3529999999998,"body":"level for them. So for example, if you've got children in the class who can't do that work,"},{"startTime":1347.356,"endTime":1354.368,"body":"if they can't access it for whatever reason, of course, they're going to get bored. And we know"},{"startTime":1354.368,"endTime":1359.395,"body":"that when kids get bored, that increases dead time, and we know that where there's dead time,"},{"startTime":1359.4019999999998,"endTime":1365.426,"body":"there's low level disruptive behaviour. So if the child can't do it and it's just plonked down"},{"startTime":1365.426,"endTime":1370.404,"body":"in front of them, they're gonna find a way to avoid it. They're gonna occupy their time doing"},{"startTime":1370.404,"endTime":1376.417,"body":"something else, probably something that you don't want them to do. Equally, if the work is too"},{"startTime":1376.417,"endTime":1383.398,"body":"easy and children just race through it and they finish really quickly, they too are likely to"},{"startTime":1383.398,"endTime":1390.356,"body":"have a bit of deadtime on their hands, and they are also likely to engage in low level disruptive"},{"startTime":1390.3729999999998,"endTime":1395.4299999999998,"body":"behaviour, getting out of their seat, asking for a drink of water, asking to go to the toilet,"},{"startTime":1396.3609999999999,"endTime":1400.4309999999998,"body":"chucking a rubber at their friend, whatever that might look like. So the work has got to be"},{"startTime":1400.4309999999998,"endTime":1406.4389999999999,"body":"pitched at the right level so that it's challenging enough for children to move forward and"},{"startTime":1406.4389999999999,"endTime":1412.358,"body":"to learn something from it. And we've also got to remember that for some children in the class"},{"startTime":1412.358,"endTime":1419.447,"body":"that you'll have who've got low resilience, there's a real difficulty with them being presented"},{"startTime":1420.3529999999998,"endTime":1426.395,"body":"with work that they feel is too hard for them. It's just too much for them to try to attempt"},{"startTime":1426.4009999999998,"endTime":1432.432,"body":"that work because there's such a massive fear of failure and maybe of being discovered that"},{"startTime":1432.432,"endTime":1438.385,"body":"they're not clever enough or they're not as good as their friends. So those children who are"},{"startTime":1438.385,"endTime":1444.403,"body":"really worried about failing because they perceive that the work is too hard, they are also"},{"startTime":1444.417,"endTime":1452.4119999999998,"body":"likely to engage in disruptive behaviour. So deadly sin number 4 is giving everybody exactly"},{"startTime":1452.4119999999998,"endTime":1456.394,"body":"the same work every day regardless of where they are at."},{"startTime":1457.35,"endTime":1462.426,"body":"Sin number 5 is you, the adult, sitting in the same place all the way through the lesson. There's"},{"startTime":1462.426,"endTime":1467.394,"body":"something called proximity control, which is a lot less sinister than it sounds. And, essentially,"},{"startTime":1467.394,"endTime":1471.3529999999998,"body":"imagine you've got a classroom and the children are supposed to be working quietly, and you"},{"startTime":1471.3529999999998,"endTime":1475.3999999999999,"body":"get a couple of kids talking at the back of the room, say, on the right hand side. The kids"},{"startTime":1475.3999999999999,"endTime":1480.396,"body":"at the back of the room, if the teacher just sits at the desk throughout the lesson at the front"},{"startTime":1480.396,"endTime":1486.425,"body":"of the room, they know that the teacher probably isn't monitoring very carefully what they're"},{"startTime":1486.425,"endTime":1491.413,"body":"doing. And what you can do is just by getting out of your chair and walking to the corner of"},{"startTime":1491.413,"endTime":1496.4389999999999,"body":"the room and standing by that table, you are sending the message to those children that I am"},{"startTime":1496.4389999999999,"endTime":1501.432,"body":"monitoring your behaviour. And for many children, just having the adult standing there just for"},{"startTime":1501.432,"endTime":1506.3719999999998,"body":"a short time is enough for them to stop engaging that behaviour because if you're doing the wrong"},{"startTime":1506.3719999999998,"endTime":1509.4379999999999,"body":"thing, it's fairly dumb to do the wrong thing when there's adult next to you because you know"},{"startTime":1509.4379999999999,"endTime":1514.3619999999999,"body":"you're gonna get caught. And so you just go and stand over there, and it creates this kind of"},{"startTime":1514.3619999999999,"endTime":1519.384,"body":"pool of calm. And then after you stood there for a little bit, you walk around to another table"},{"startTime":1519.384,"endTime":1524.379,"body":"and you might help that table. And that creates a new pool of calm at the new table, and then"},{"startTime":1524.379,"endTime":1527.4099999999999,"body":"you move to another table and you sort of settle those and work with those, and that creates"},{"startTime":1527.4099999999999,"endTime":1533.432,"body":"a new pool of calm. And the thing is as we move around the classroom, we keep creating these"},{"startTime":1533.432,"endTime":1538.406,"body":"pools of calm. And if you leave one table for too long, that pool of calm kind of evaporates."},{"startTime":1538.4279999999999,"endTime":1545.3509999999999,"body":"It dries up, so you have to return to the same place. And simply by physically moving around"},{"startTime":1545.3509999999999,"endTime":1550.4209999999998,"body":"the classroom, we can keep behaviour calm. We can keep the kids focused without having to say"},{"startTime":1550.443,"endTime":1555.375,"body":"a single word. You don't have to do it like a prison warden. You can do it in a friendly way."},{"startTime":1555.375,"endTime":1558.4399999999998,"body":"You can go there and start supporting kids with their work, but we're sending the message, I"},{"startTime":1558.4399999999998,"endTime":1564.368,"body":"know what's going on in this corner of the room. Teaching, effective teaching, effective classroom"},{"startTime":1564.368,"endTime":1571.389,"body":"management is often about being really mobile and getting loads and loads of steps in. So if"},{"startTime":1571.389,"endTime":1576.379,"body":"you want children to feel like their behaviour isn't being monitored and you want to see avoidable"},{"startTime":1576.435,"endTime":1581.3909999999998,"body":"low level behaviour in your classroom, sit behind the desk at the front of the room for the whole"},{"startTime":1581.3909999999998,"endTime":1583.413,"body":"lesson. That's deadly sin number 5."},{"startTime":1583.4209999999998,"endTime":1588.4409999999998,"body":"Can I just add in there really quickly as well, Simon, that it's up to you to make sure that"},{"startTime":1588.4409999999998,"endTime":1595.4399999999998,"body":"your furniture fits into the room in such a way that you can navigate your way around that classroom?"},{"startTime":1595.4399999999998,"endTime":1600.356,"body":"And I know that's tricky. I go into a lot of really old Victorian buildings, and they've got"},{"startTime":1600.356,"endTime":1605.4289999999999,"body":"too much furniture in them, to be honest. But where you can, circulate the room. You need to"},{"startTime":1605.4289999999999,"endTime":1610.445,"body":"be able to get to all of the areas of your class room. Sometimes, particularly where desks are"},{"startTime":1610.445,"endTime":1616.3809999999999,"body":"arranged in rows, I see the teacher teaching from the front, and they only ever enter into the"},{"startTime":1616.3809999999999,"endTime":1622.442,"body":"first quarter of the classroom because they don't go past that first row of desks. So they were"},{"startTime":1622.442,"endTime":1626.4479999999999,"body":"always at the very front. So the kids at the back and in the corners, they kinda know that the"},{"startTime":1626.4479999999999,"endTime":1632.4489999999998,"body":"teacher's never coming back there. It's about setting yourself up to be successful. So I suppose"},{"startTime":1632.4489999999998,"endTime":1638.4489999999998,"body":"the the add on to that deadly sin is make your classroom furniture like an obstacle course that"},{"startTime":1638.4489999999998,"endTime":1640.358,"body":"you can't get past."},{"startTime":1641.394,"endTime":1642.4299999999998,"body":"That'd be sin 5 and a half."},{"startTime":1642.4299999999998,"endTime":1649.4289999999999,"body":"So, the 6th deadly sin then, this is a good one, the 6th deadly sin is when you keep on sending"},{"startTime":1649.4289999999999,"endTime":1658.379,"body":"children out of class for undesirable behaviour, sending them to a senior member of staff. So"},{"startTime":1658.379,"endTime":1663.3929999999998,"body":"we've all seen this before. This is where the classroom teacher has tried to address the behaviour"},{"startTime":1663.407,"endTime":1670.418,"body":"with a pupil. The pupil might be showing defiance or not listening or not changing their behaviour,"},{"startTime":1670.4279999999999,"endTime":1686.4489999999998,"body":"so the teacher resorts to either calling for the deputy or the head. As the adult in the room, you really"},{"startTime":1686.4489999999998,"endTime":1693.4109999999998,"body":"want to be dealing with about 99% of the behaviour yourself. And I know some people are gonna"},{"startTime":1693.4109999999998,"endTime":1700.3609999999999,"body":"throw their hands up in horror, but bear with me. When you send a child out of class, you are"},{"startTime":1700.407,"endTime":1708.3529999999998,"body":"accidentally sending out a little bit of your power and authority with that child. You are communicating"},{"startTime":1709.3639999999998,"endTime":1715.4219999999998,"body":"that you can't cope with their behaviour or you can't cope with them, or sometimes, actually,"},{"startTime":1715.436,"endTime":1724.366,"body":"you don't like them. And when you do that, the child learns that when they exhibit particular"},{"startTime":1724.3729999999998,"endTime":1728.408,"body":"behaviours, that's gonna push your button, and you're gonna send them out, and they are going"},{"startTime":1728.408,"endTime":1735.386,"body":"to get access to somebody that they don't get to see so often in school. Somebody usually perceived"},{"startTime":1735.386,"endTime":1740.358,"body":"to be higher up in the hierarchy, so that might be a member of the leadership team or even the"},{"startTime":1740.358,"endTime":1748.36,"body":"head. So the child works out the way to press the lever to exit the classroom and to spend time"},{"startTime":1748.36,"endTime":1753.442,"body":"with a more important or more senior member of staff that they don't get ready access to is"},{"startTime":1753.442,"endTime":1759.436,"body":"through the root of bad behaviour. And the power of the senior management is their distance."},{"startTime":1760.385,"endTime":1764.4489999999998,"body":"Because they're not around all of the time, they're not with that child all of the time, it"},{"startTime":1764.4489999999998,"endTime":1770.375,"body":"might be more appealing or more attractive for the child to spend time with them. So each time"},{"startTime":1770.375,"endTime":1777.413,"body":"you send a child out or you send for a member of senior staff to deal with a child's behaviour,"},{"startTime":1778.378,"endTime":1784.3539999999998,"body":"you're inadvertently communicating. You don't actually have to do what I say, but you do have"},{"startTime":1784.3539999999998,"endTime":1789.435,"body":"to do it when the big guns arrive. And, of course, the caveat to this is there are going to"},{"startTime":1790.357,"endTime":1796.405,"body":"be occasional extreme cases of behaviour where you are going to need backup. You are gonna need"},{"startTime":1796.405,"endTime":1801.3609999999999,"body":"another member of staff to come to help, or you are gonna need a child to go out if they're"},{"startTime":1801.3609999999999,"endTime":1809.424,"body":"dysregulated, for example. But where you can, work on time in with that student rather than"},{"startTime":1809.424,"endTime":1815.405,"body":"time out. And another little tip there, if you do have to call for an additional member of staff,"},{"startTime":1816.3509999999999,"endTime":1821.403,"body":"make sure that you, as the class teacher, however early you are in your career, make sure that"},{"startTime":1821.403,"endTime":1827.355,"body":"you are still calling the shots. Make sure you are leading on what happens, and that will mean"},{"startTime":1827.355,"endTime":1832.415,"body":"a conversation with the other members of staff. Sin number 7 is a"},{"startTime":1867.384,"endTime":1874.3739999999998,"body":"different one, really. It's more of a mindset one. It's blame the kids. There are 2 types of"},{"startTime":1874.3739999999998,"endTime":1878.446,"body":"people in the world. Okay? There are people that have what's called an internal locus of control,"},{"startTime":1878.446,"endTime":1882.4309999999998,"body":"and there are people that have an external locus of control. And they think about the world"},{"startTime":1883.385,"endTime":1889.435,"body":"very, very differently. People with an internal locus of control feel like they have agency."},{"startTime":1890.357,"endTime":1896.396,"body":"They feel that they make things happen. They have an impact. They make choices that lead to"},{"startTime":1896.396,"endTime":1903.3639999999998,"body":"outcomes. They're the kind of people that make change happen. If you have an external locus"},{"startTime":1903.3639999999998,"endTime":1911.355,"body":"of control, you feel like things happen to you. You feel like you are responding to all sorts"},{"startTime":1911.355,"endTime":1916.426,"body":"of things that are happening around you and outside you and that you don't really have any control"},{"startTime":1916.432,"endTime":1922.3519999999999,"body":"about what's happening. So let's think about those ideas from the perspective of classroom management."},{"startTime":1922.3519999999999,"endTime":1927.434,"body":"If you've got an internal locus of control in the classroom and behaviour is not working well,"},{"startTime":1927.4479999999999,"endTime":1931.415,"body":"you feel like you can have an impact. You feel that there are choices you can make and things"},{"startTime":1931.415,"endTime":1938.405,"body":"that you can do that will make the situation better. That is empowering. If you have an external"},{"startTime":1938.405,"endTime":1944.3809999999999,"body":"locus of control and you think, well, it's the kids and it's the way they brought up and it's"},{"startTime":1944.3809999999999,"endTime":1950.4479999999999,"body":"social media and the school's behaviour policy doesn't work, you feel like a victim, and you"},{"startTime":1950.4479999999999,"endTime":1956.426,"body":"feel like there's nothing you can do to make things better. And that's a really, really stressful"},{"startTime":1957.404,"endTime":1965.388,"body":"place to be. Having an external locus of control makes you the victim in the situation, and"},{"startTime":1965.388,"endTime":1971.4019999999998,"body":"you are never going to find the things that are gonna move the classroom on. So if we're working"},{"startTime":1971.4019999999998,"endTime":1976.3739999999998,"body":"in a classroom and behaviour is not right, or I would say, actually, working in any classroom"},{"startTime":1976.404,"endTime":1982.444,"body":"or doing any job of any capacity whatsoever, we need to take an internal locus of control, which"},{"startTime":1982.444,"endTime":1988.404,"body":"means when there are problems, we focus on the things that we can change as the adult. And there"},{"startTime":1988.404,"endTime":1993.4109999999998,"body":"are always things we can change and make better. You might look at the environment. You might"},{"startTime":1993.4109999999998,"endTime":1998.397,"body":"look at how the tables are set out. You might look at how your displays are encouraging on task"},{"startTime":1998.397,"endTime":2002.444,"body":"or off task behaviour. You might look at your seating plan and thinking about which children"},{"startTime":2002.444,"endTime":2007.432,"body":"are sat next to other children and being really strategic with the way you set up those social"},{"startTime":2007.432,"endTime":2011.4219999999998,"body":"relationships. You might look at your lesson structure. You might be teaching in a certain way"},{"startTime":2011.4219999999998,"endTime":2016.37,"body":"with a certain lesson structure from a certain scheme of work. You might look at how you form relationships with the children. You might look at the quantity of positive and negative"},{"startTime":2036.384,"endTime":2040.444,"body":"feedback that you're giving the kids throughout the lesson. These are things that are within our control that nearly always"},{"startTime":2051.445,"endTime":2057.443,"body":"lead to immediate improvement. But to get them done and done well and to recognize them, you"},{"startTime":2057.443,"endTime":2062.409,"body":"need an internal locus of control. You need to feel that there are choices that you can make"},{"startTime":2062.415,"endTime":2068.39,"body":"that will result in positive change. I see this a lot. Often, we're called into classes where"},{"startTime":2068.412,"endTime":2073.424,"body":"children are unfocused or social relationships aren't working and and lesson times just don't"},{"startTime":2073.424,"endTime":2078.4030000000002,"body":"feel productive. And we have a system called the classroom reset, which is all about changing"},{"startTime":2078.4030000000002,"endTime":2084.364,"body":"the environment and using a specific lesson structure and putting a focus on behaviour positive"},{"startTime":2084.37,"endTime":2092.359,"body":"behaviour for sort of 2 to 3 weeks. And it has, to be honest, a 100% success rate when all of"},{"startTime":2092.359,"endTime":2098.393,"body":"the elements are done and done well.
