It reminds me of this. Is it the serenity prayer?"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":417.438,"endTime":425.419,"body":"Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":425.44100000000003,"endTime":435.374,"body":"And we know from research that when we focus on areas of our life that we can control, we feel more relaxed, we feel more successful, and we feel more confident."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":435.374,"endTime":441.38599999999997,"body":"So if we're constantly looking at the kids, I'm thinking about they should be doing x, y, and zed, and this is a reflection"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":441.41599999999994,"endTime":447.352,"body":"on my capacity or professionalism as a teacher, when we're looking at the children's actions about whether they're doing the"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":447.352,"endTime":453.448,"body":"work or whether they're being respectful, well, a, that's all out of our control, and, b, that's very, very stressful."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":454.394,"endTime":456.418,"body":"There are things in the classroom we can change and do."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":456.418,"endTime":462.365,"body":"There are things about the way we speak and the way we act that we are in control with, and we're much better off focusing"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":462.365,"endTime":466.35900000000004,"body":"on those than things that are beyond our direct control."},{"speaker":"Emma Shackleton","startTime":466.376,"endTime":473.43600000000004,"body":"Yeah. And we want to associate the outcome the child chooses with our own professional competence, and that's a bit of a dangerous"},{"speaker":"Emma Shackleton","startTime":473.43600000000004,"endTime":477.44399999999996,"body":"game because we aren't fully in control of what happens with the children."},{"speaker":"Emma Shackleton","startTime":478.35799999999995,"endTime":485.389,"body":"And that's where I think teachers get frustrated when they want something to happen, but then for whatever reason that doesn't"},{"speaker":"Emma Shackleton","startTime":485.389,"endTime":490.355,"body":"happen, we've got a bit of a tendency as teachers, I think, to take that very personally."},{"speaker":"Emma Shackleton","startTime":490.369,"endTime":494.41599999999994,"body":"And we take that as a knock, and we start criticize maybe the things that we're doing."},{"speaker":"Emma Shackleton","startTime":494.446,"endTime":504.409,"body":"But the truth is we are not solely responsible for children's behaviour. We've got a secondary influence. For them, it's their first time."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":607.355,"endTime":613.374,"body":"And if we sound enthusiastic and interested in what we're talking about, then we'll sweep the kids up with us."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":613.374,"endTime":619.398,"body":"Have we thought carefully about the social groupings in class or about how the children are sat? Are they sat on their own? Are they sat in twos?"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":619.398,"endTime":621.408,"body":"Are they sat in social groups of 6?"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":621.414,"endTime":627.3820000000001,"body":"I personally don't believe there's any such thing as a bad child, but I certainly do believe in bad combinations of children."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":627.3820000000001,"endTime":631.373,"body":"So have we sat the child where they're likely to be successful socially?"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":631.373,"endTime":638.3770000000001,"body":"Are they surrounded by positive role models, or are they surrounded by children that are likely to negatively impact on their behaviour?"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":638.423,"endTime":645.365,"body":"We have to think about where our lines in the sand are and what we're willing to be more flexible about as the task progresses."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":645.4010000000001,"endTime":648.373,"body":"So these are all things we can look at and take control of."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":648.373,"endTime":652.375,"body":"And when we do this, when we focus on these things, it gives us agency."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":652.445,"endTime":657.3960000000001,"body":"So we can look at the results of our changes and think about what was successful and what wasn't."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":657.3960000000001,"endTime":663.429,"body":"We might try moving a few children around in the classroom, and some might have been more on task and some might be less on task."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":664.3580000000001,"endTime":669.402,"body":"And then we look at what worked, and we keep the things that are having an impact, and we throw away the rest, kind of almost"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":669.402,"endTime":674.356,"body":"like an experimental approach to improving classroom behavior step by step."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":674.386,"endTime":682.376,"body":"These are things we can take control of, and that's gonna make us feel more confident and feel like we have agency in the classroom."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":682.414,"endTime":688.424,"body":"One way of thinking about this is lead measures and lag measures, so lead and lag measures."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":689.378,"endTime":697.376,"body":"A lead measure is something that we can take control of, something we can do, and a lag measure is something that happens as a result."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":697.376,"endTime":701.434,"body":"So to take an academic example, children's exam results would be lag measures."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":702.364,"endTime":710.384,"body":"By the time we've looked at their exam results and they've done the test and we know what they've got, it's too late to do anything about it.
