Yeah."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":510.31499999999994,"endTime":517.375,"body":"So before we talk about what the program actually is, I'm interested in what prompted your organization"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":517.435,"endTime":519.454,"body":"to start the autistic and ok program."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":519.73,"endTime":524.71,"body":"What were you seeing in school and what were the young people you were working with experiencing?"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":525.25,"endTime":530.795,"body":"Yeah so we created the autistic and ok program as we're seeing a real need for mental health"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":530.795,"endTime":535.215,"body":"support for autistic young people in schools across the country and this is really demonstrated"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":535.275,"endTime":536.95,"body":"in issues such as absenteeism."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":537.57,"endTime":543.81,"body":"So if we take secondary state schools as an example, there are over 70,000 autistic young people"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":543.89,"endTime":549.635,"body":"autistic pupils in in secondary schools and over 20,000 of these are persistently absent from"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":549.635,"endTime":553.234,"body":"school, which is defined as missing, more than 10% of school."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":553.234,"endTime":557.77,"body":"And we also know more generally that 4 and 5 autistic young people tell us that they've experienced"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":557.77,"endTime":560.11,"body":"mental health issues, they've gone through struggles."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":560.25,"endTime":565.455,"body":"What these figures paint a picture of is that the vast majority of autistic pupils are fortunately"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":565.515,"endTime":570.715,"body":"are not feeling okay in school, and lots of them are really struggling, lots of them are missing"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":570.715,"endTime":574.91,"body":"large chunks of school, they're missing GCSEs, A levels, really important milestones."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":575.37,"endTime":577.949,"body":"And also we we know this can have an impact socially."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":578.169,"endTime":583.415,"body":"So obviously not being with your peers, with your friends, can lead to isolation, can lead to"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":583.415,"endTime":585.735,"body":"feelings of feeling left out that kind of thing."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":585.735,"endTime":589.3,"body":"I was gonna say this must lead to lots of feelings of kind of like anxiety and stress."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":589.3,"endTime":591.88,"body":"This is an important time in children's kind of social development."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":592.1,"endTime":595.0,"body":"Yeah. It's a massive time for that socially as well as academically."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":595.22,"endTime":599.995,"body":"And I think that's the impact it's having on young people's mental health and the sort of reasons"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":599.995,"endTime":602.575,"body":"behind why there can be these high rates of absences."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":602.875,"endTime":607.4200000000001,"body":"There are a few reasons really, a lack of understanding and support from teachers and that isn't"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":607.64,"endTime":611.72,"body":"like willfully on teachers part, bullying and stigma from other peers and other young people"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":611.72,"endTime":615.6650000000001,"body":"at school that aren't autistic that might not have as much knowledge about autism or there might"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":615.6650000000001,"endTime":616.705,"body":"be some stigma around it."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":616.705,"endTime":622.145,"body":"And then also anxiety caused by sort of sensory environment at school, the overwhelming nature"},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":622.145,"endTime":627.09,"body":"of being at school at times, for example like an assembly hall or in a canteen at lunchtime."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":627.309,"endTime":632.975,"body":"So yeah we know that teachers really want that support and they want to do the best for all peoples including autistic peoples."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":632.975,"endTime":635.375,"body":"But many simply just don't have the resources."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":635.375,"endTime":638.895,"body":"They don't have the capacity, the time to do so."},{"speaker":"Joss Lambert","startTime":638.895,"endTime":643.6700000000001,"body":"So that's one of the main reasons why we created this program for pupils and teachers alike."},{"speaker":"Lily Ashby","startTime":643.8100000000001,"endTime":650.4150000000001,"body":"But I would also say that just generally, the school environment is very overwhelming and overstimulating"},{"speaker":"Lily Ashby","startTime":650.874,"endTime":657.135,"body":"for autistic pupils, especially when you have autistic pupils who are highly masking."},{"speaker":"Lily Ashby","startTime":657.94,"endTime":664.12,"body":"So who are camouflage their autistic traits effectively to fit in because they feel like they need to fit in."},{"speaker":"Lily Ashby","startTime":664.4200000000001,"endTime":667.005,"body":"Otherwise, there's the worry of being bullied, etcetera."},{"speaker":"Lily Ashby","startTime":667.945,"endTime":674.285,"body":"And that's all very tiring and making it to the end of the day, it feels like a mountain away."},{"speaker":"Lily especially with the, like, health care professionals in school, like nurses aren't really"},{"speaker":"Lily Ashby","startTime":683.885,"endTime":686.465,"body":"trained how to deal with autistic burnout."},{"speaker":"Lily Ashby","startTime":686.845,"endTime":695.49,"body":"So it can be very difficult in terms of feeling understood and also the then not trying to just get out of you're holding in or you're trying to manage these anxieties if you've got sensory sensitivity,"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":707.333,"endTime":709.288,"body":"school is a difficult place to be if you're trying to hold all that together."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":709.288,"endTime":713.22,"body":"When you get home, that's gonna have an impact in on your home life as Ashby","startTime":719.585,"endTime":725.14,"body":"And, also, it means that, like, hobbies that you have at home or anything that you'd like to"},{"speaker":"Lily makes total sense.
