There's a few things that are causing this."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":497.35900000000004,"endTime":505.255,"body":"So a lot of times, students who have ADHD can have a sudden change of emotion. So they're easily agitated, excited."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":505.635,"endTime":507.735,"body":"They can have a wide range of emotions."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":508.01,"endTime":511.78999999999996,"body":"So that in and of itself can force them to become dysregulated."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":512.73,"endTime":519.114,"body":"I also like to always think that there's a skill deficit instead of just blaming it on a condition."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":519.114,"endTime":527.134,"body":"So maybe they have not yet learned some regulating strategies that are going to help them when they have these change of emotions."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":527.4399999999999,"endTime":533.68,"body":"So I also just think that sometimes students with ADHD might not be at baseline in your classroom because they might have"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":533.68,"endTime":542.845,"body":"sensory overload because of things like too many, sensory stimulating things in the classroom, like posters, bright colors, different things like that."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":542.845,"endTime":548.84,"body":"So that can actually be leading to some of the difficulties in staying regulated."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":549.3,"endTime":555.825,"body":"So in terms of then, supporting them in class, essentially, what we're saying is there are some underlying differences about"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":555.825,"endTime":560.785,"body":"the way their brain functions and how they process the world and how they interact with the environment, which means if we"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":560.785,"endTime":569.699,"body":"don't kinda make adaptations, we just continue teaching the way we've always taught, then it's gonna be difficult for our students to make progress."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":569.699,"endTime":571.085,"body":"Is that kind of where we're going?"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":571.405,"endTime":572.625,"body":"Exactly. I think socially is a huge piece of it because for so many reasons."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":597.22,"endTime":601.88,"body":"So say you have a student and they are playing with their friend and they're just impulsive."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":602.34,"endTime":609.994,"body":"They put their hands on one another just because something happens and they're so impulsive, and it tarnishes their relationship a little bit."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":609.994,"endTime":616.0600000000001,"body":"But they don't mean to do it, but it can impact friendships because they also don't pick up on social cues."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":616.5400000000001,"endTime":628.345,"body":"They might have some excessive talking and even when they're engaging in, you know, that social reciprocity, they are going to have some big emotions. You know? They're, again, easily excitable, easily frustrated."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":628.405,"endTime":632.34,"body":"So that is also gonna come out when they are engaging with their peers."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":632.4200000000001,"endTime":639.72,"body":"So with kids with ADHD then, it's not necessarily they have difficulties with social understanding like you would see from"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":639.78,"endTime":646.275,"body":"our autistic students, but it's how they respond in that kind of stimulating, exciting social environment that can create"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":646.275,"endTime":649.235,"body":"the difficulties so they can get overexcited, maybe say things that don't mean."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":649.235,"endTime":651.8000000000001,"body":"Is is that the kind of thing that we're talking about?"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":651.86,"endTime":653.619,"body":"Oh, yeah. I think that's definitely part of it."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":653.619,"endTime":660.245,"body":"I do think that they miss social cues sometimes just because they might not be attending to the facial features and things like that."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":660.245,"endTime":662.005,"body":"They might be distracted by something else."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":662.005,"endTime":666.085,"body":"So I think that sometimes that they might miss it, but only because they're not paying attention. Yes."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":666.085,"endTime":671.309,"body":"There is a difference between the difficulties that students with autism have and students with ADHD, for sure."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":671.309,"endTime":679.985,"body":"And when we think about how they're working in the classroom, how they're attempting their tasks, working alongside their peers. How does ADHD impact there?"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":680.285,"endTime":687.0600000000001,"body":"This is a good one. So students who have ADHD are going to struggle with repetitive tasks, having to do the same thing over"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":687.0600000000001,"endTime":691.94,"body":"and over, which we have a lot in the classroom because we have to practice the skills over and over."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":691.94,"endTime":696.225,"body":"We know it's good to have predictable schedules, but this can be really troublesome for them."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":696.225,"endTime":701.99,"body":"And then it leads to maybe some impulsive behaviour, maybe they're getting their peers off task."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":701.99,"endTime":705.0500000000001,"body":"They also struggle to attend for a long period of time."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":705.11,"endTime":711.75,"body":"And when they engage in these behaviours, then it results in some negative interactions with teachers, which we see a lot."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":711.75,"endTime":718.315,"body":"You know, they're told that they need to be redirected. They might, have some punitive consequences."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":718.455,"endTime":725.5,"body":"And this is kind of like a cycle that they engage with, which can ultimately lead to, impacting their academics."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":725.88,"endTime":730.485,"body":"And what we have to appreciate for these children is I hear a lot of teachers say, well, they know what to do."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":730.485,"endTime":734.405,"body":"They're choosing to do the wrong thing. That's not happening here, is it?"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":734.405,"endTime":739.6,"body":"No. No. And it's so hard because it looks like they are purposely doing it."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":739.6,"endTime":745.874,"body":"I think that sometimes ADHD is almost like an invisible disability because it's not as outward."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":745.874,"endTime":750.195,"body":"It looks like sometimes, yeah, they can attend and sometimes they can't."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":750.195,"endTime":757.07,"body":"And that can be really, really frustrating for teachers, especially when they're saying, I gave them x, y, and z chances."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":757.45,"endTime":760.91,"body":"I can't keep doing this, and I can understand how frustrating that is."},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":761.075,"endTime":768.01,"body":"So let's think about keeping kids regulated because I know that's an issue that lots and lots of teachers talk about with,"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":768.3530000000001,"endTime":773.155,"body":"you know, trying to support their ADHD students. What proactive things can we do?"},{"speaker":"Simon Currigan","startTime":773.155,"endTime":778.285,"body":"And what proactive classroom adaptations and strategies can we use to support our students with ADHD?"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":778.585,"endTime":782.605,"body":"I think the number one, most important one, is to teach these regulation skills."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":782.825,"endTime":790.38,"body":"And I think that this is kind of a new idea and a new concept because it's not something, at least when I went to school, we never talked about this."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":790.38,"endTime":797.725,"body":"We never talked about different strategies like calming strategies, mindfulness, grounding yourself, but it's so important to teach this."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":797.725,"endTime":803.7,"body":"And you can teach it to your whole class, teaching how to identify emotions, what to do with them when they feel them, and"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":803.7,"endTime":809.72,"body":"just help these students to understand that it's okay to have these feelings, but it's not okay to act out."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":809.855,"endTime":818.095,"body":"I think about myself even as I was a gen ed typical student, and I have a lot of anxiety now."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":818.095,"endTime":825.629,"body":"And I think and wonder if I was taught some of these skills when I was in elementary school about how to regulate my emotions,"},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":825.6890000000001,"endTime":828.59,"body":"how it would have affected me as I got older."},{"speaker":"Abby Moehringer","startTime":828.874,"endTime":836.475,"body":"So I just think that it's gonna help more of your students, even the ones that you might not think need it. Yeah. So it's just really about being present. I'm not looking to the future. That's still wrong.
