So I met this student"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":780.11,"endTime":785.09,"body":"and I got all of the student's"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":785.09,"endTime":788.3000000000001,"body":"educational records. And you can"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":785.09,"endTime":788.3000000000001,"body":"imagine, by the time a student"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":788.3000000000001,"endTime":793.25,"body":"is 16, that it's quite a stack"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":788.3000000000001,"endTime":793.25,"body":"of records. And so I dug down"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":793.25,"endTime":796.76,"body":"through the records and found"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":793.25,"endTime":796.76,"body":"that this student had been"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":796.76,"endTime":802.58,"body":"evaluated in the second grade by"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":796.76,"endTime":802.58,"body":"an outside, quite reputabl"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":802.61,"endTime":807.23,"body":"affiliation of professionals"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":802.61,"endTime":807.23,"body":"And it was discovered that thi"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":807.23,"endTime":812.5400000000001,"body":"boy had what we call a specifi"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":807.23,"endTime":812.5400000000001,"body":"learning disability. Unfortunately, fo"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":829.82,"endTime":834.14,"body":"some reason, that did no"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":834.14,"endTime":838.46,"body":"happen. And so I've seen kid"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":834.14,"endTime":838.46,"body":"like this in my career, who ge"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":838.46,"endTime":844.22,"body":"to the point where their peer"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":838.46,"endTime":844.22,"body":"are rocketing past them. They're not learnin"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":847.19,"endTime":851.0600000000001,"body":"they can't read. And so that's a"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1213.6,"endTime":1217.6499999999999,"body":"lack of experience. This director of"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1473.49,"endTime":1477.09,"body":"special services was one of the"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1473.49,"endTime":1477.09,"body":"most rude and recalcitrant"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1477.12,"endTime":1480.9599999999998,"body":"directors I've ever met."},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1477.12,"endTime":1480.9599999999998,"body":"Unfortunately, we had to file"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1480.9599999999998,"endTime":1484.56,"body":"for due process. That's like"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1480.9599999999998,"endTime":1484.56,"body":"filing a lawsuit against the"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1484.56,"endTime":1487.9199999999998,"body":"school district. And we actually"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1484.56,"endTime":1487.9199999999998,"body":"had a trial, the director"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1487.9199999999998,"endTime":1491.4299999999998,"body":"testified on the witness stand"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1487.9199999999998,"endTime":1491.4299999999998,"body":"that the child was not blind."},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1491.4299999999998,"endTime":1495.09,"body":"And we were flabbergasted. But"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1491.4299999999998,"endTime":1495.09,"body":"we won that case. And in fact,"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1495.09,"endTime":1499.05,"body":"we set a national precedent in"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1495.09,"endTime":1499.05,"body":"the way that students with"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1499.05,"endTime":1504.4199999999998,"body":"visual impairments must be"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1499.05,"endTime":1504.4199999999998,"body":"evaluated. And that child was"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1504.4199999999998,"endTime":1508.86,"body":"given appropriate educational"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1504.4199999999998,"endTime":1508.86,"body":"services, including a teacher of"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1508.8899999999999,"endTime":1511.98,"body":"the blind and visually impaired,"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1508.8899999999999,"endTime":1511.98,"body":"and we got a lot of compensatory"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1511.98,"endTime":1516.75,"body":"education. So in the summers,"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1511.98,"endTime":1516.75,"body":"the child went to a camp, and"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1516.75,"endTime":1520.3799999999999,"body":"learned orientation and"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1516.75,"endTime":1520.3799999999999,"body":"mobility, learned how to do all"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1520.3799999999999,"endTime":1524.04,"body":"the household chores, including"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1520.3799999999999,"endTime":1524.04,"body":"cleaning the toilets, and could"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1524.04,"endTime":1529.29,"body":"function like anybody else like"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1524.04,"endTime":1529.29,"body":"you and I function. And so that"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1529.29,"endTime":1534.3899999999999,"body":"was the beauty of catching this"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1529.29,"endTime":1534.3899999999999,"body":"child in early and getting the"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1534.3899999999999,"endTime":1537.81,"body":"appropriate services. And the"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1534.3899999999999,"endTime":1537.81,"body":"statistics show Simon that"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1537.87,"endTime":1542.61,"body":"people who are blind, when"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1537.87,"endTime":1542.61,"body":"that's not remediated, the large"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1542.61,"endTime":1547.5,"body":"percentage of them are under"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1542.61,"endTime":1547.5,"body":"educated and underemployed. And,"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1547.62,"endTime":1551.9099999999999,"body":"you know, that's actually a drag"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1547.62,"endTime":1551.9099999999999,"body":"on society, not to mention the"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1551.9099999999999,"endTime":1556.4099999999999,"body":"ruination of someone's life. But"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1551.9099999999999,"endTime":1556.4099999999999,"body":"statistics show and for every"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1556.4099999999999,"endTime":1562.56,"body":"dollar spent on a child who has"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1556.4099999999999,"endTime":1562.56,"body":"a disability, it saves $2 during"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1562.56,"endTime":1566.73,"body":"that child's lifetime, and"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1562.56,"endTime":1566.73,"body":"another student I can think of"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1566.73,"endTime":1571.4399999999998,"body":"that is a good example of"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1566.73,"endTime":1571.4399999999998,"body":"catching a student early was a"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1571.4399999999998,"endTime":1575.79,"body":"young man who was refusing to"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1571.4399999999998,"endTime":1575.79,"body":"leave his room. He was"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1575.79,"endTime":1581.6399999999999,"body":"agoraphobic, he would not go"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1575.79,"endTime":1581.6399999999999,"body":"outside and we were planning on"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1581.6399999999999,"endTime":1584.79,"body":"probably putting him in a"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1581.6399999999999,"endTime":1584.79,"body":"residential facility because he"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1584.79,"endTime":1587.52,"body":"would be in a place where 24"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1584.79,"endTime":1587.52,"body":"seven, they would have the where"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1587.52,"endTime":1592.1399999999999,"body":"with all to work. We discovered"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1587.52,"endTime":1592.1399999999999,"body":"that unfortunately, this person"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1592.32,"endTime":1597.27,"body":"had been sexually abused by a"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1592.32,"endTime":1597.27,"body":"professional in his life."},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1597.4199999999998,"endTime":1601.9199999999998,"body":"Ultimately, the school district"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1597.4199999999998,"endTime":1601.9199999999998,"body":"agreed with us under some"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1601.9499999999998,"endTime":1605.34,"body":"duress, we did have to file a"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1601.9499999999998,"endTime":1605.34,"body":"lawsuit. But they settled, the"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1605.34,"endTime":1609.36,"body":"district offered to send him to"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1605.34,"endTime":1609.36,"body":"a private day programme. And the"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1609.36,"endTime":1612.54,"body":"parents said, you know what we"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1609.36,"endTime":1612.54,"body":"want to give this a try. We were"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1612.54,"endTime":1615.6899999999998,"body":"a little concerned about how he"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1612.54,"endTime":1615.6899999999998,"body":"would get on the bus. But that"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1615.6899999999998,"endTime":1620.4299999999998,"body":"school was well versed in how to"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1615.6899999999998,"endTime":1620.4299999999998,"body":"help children who are having"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1620.4299999999998,"endTime":1623.73,"body":"these kinds of problems, school"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1620.4299999999998,"endTime":1623.73,"body":"refusal, and he didn't get on"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1623.73,"endTime":1626.82,"body":"the bus. And he went to school."},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1623.73,"endTime":1626.82,"body":"And I remember getting a phone"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1626.82,"endTime":1631.32,"body":"call from this dad about two"},{"speaker":"Jane Wesler","startTime":1626.82,"endTime":1631.32,"body":"years later.
