Author of GOOD TO GO: What the Athlete in All of Us Can Learn From the Strange Science of Recovery and co-host of the podcast EMERGING FORM Christie Aschwanden joins Travis on this week's podcast.
Travis and Christie discuss 'Good to Go,' which explores the misconceptions and marketing surrounding recovery in sports. As veteran endurance athletes Travis and Christie know the importance of recovery, but Christie emphasizes the need to let go of the myth of perfect recovery and instead focus on the basics, such as sleep, nutrition, and rest days.
Christie also highlights the importance of learning to read your body and recognizing personal signs of overtraining. She encourages athletes to train by feel and not rely solely on data. Christie and Travis also discuss the impact of stress on recovery and performance.
Be sure to keep an eye out for Christie's new podcast 'Uncertain', coming soon!

Join Travis and Mace as they sit down with liver transplant recipient and Olympic medalist Chris Klug.
In 2003 Chris used $3,000 out of his own pocket to start the Chris Klug Foundation. Chris was a professional snowboard racer when he was placed on the National Transplant Waiting List three years after being diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), a rare degenerative bile duct condition. After six years of being on the waiting list and three months at a critical stage, the day came.
On July 28, 2000, Chris received his liver transplant! “It was like a new engine was dropped in me!” Six weeks later, he was back on his snowboard. He had the opportunity to represent the USA at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, UT, where he won a Bronze Medal. During Chris’s time on the waiting list, he promised himself he would do everything he could to spread the message of organ & tissue donation once he was able.
Alongside his wife, Missy, and two children, Bali and River, Chris lives an extraordinary life savoring every moment. He manages his own Real Estate business in Aspen, CO, and makes the time to train and compete in endurance races such as the Elk Mountain Grand Traverse, Power of Four, and the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race.

Join Travis and guest host Julia Fritz for a fun and stoke-filled conversation with Justin and AJ Fountain of the Colorado campfire folk band, A Brother’s Fountain.
A Brother's Fountain is a Colorado-based band with a folk-inspired sound you always wanted to hear but never knew existed. Some categorize them as Indie Folk. Others call them an Americana band. A Brother’s Fountain knows they belong to a genre all its own: Campfire Folk. Songs range from rowdy and anthemic to reflective, laid-back sing-alongs. Keep an ear out to hear their trademark "gang vocals" that invite the listener to throw their voice into the anthem.
This rag-tag crew of best buds and mountain junkies (river guides, rock climbers, backpackers, cyclists, skiers, etc.) started their music journey busking on the street corners of Old Town Fort Collins, Colorado. Their music is inspired by life’s extraordinary gifts - mother nature, authentic friendship, epic adventures, and mysteries that keep us ever-curious.

Join Travis and Ray for a powerful and wide-ranging conversation about her new book and life.
In 2019, Ray graduated from Naropa University with her Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with Transpersonal Wilderness Therapy. In 2020, she opened up Wanderlust Counseling. Her passion for running coaching follows in line with her mission of helping others reach their full potential in all aspects of life and therefore carries a strong mind/body/spirit focus in her coaching. At Higher Running, she enjoys coaching runners embarking on new adventures and who use running as a modality to discover more about themselves. Ray’s hobbies include reading, volunteering, Yoga, snowshoeing, rollerblading, and exploring new places with her daughter(dog), Pacer.
About LIGHT & DARK:
Pierre Teilhard de Chardin is credited for the famous quote, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” But what is the human experience? Through Ray’s own life experience and her work guiding others as a psychotherapist, she came up with a simple definition: the human experience is the journey from darkness into light. While it’s a beautiful journey, it is certainly not an easy one, and that is exactly where we can find compassion for all humans. Everyone on this earth signed up for a hard job. No human goes without experiencing the pain and suffering of being alive. Yet, it is exactly that pain that can point us back to the light, back to remembering our true selves as spiritual beings.
This book includes poems, insights from nature, essays, and journal entries on what it means to be human. Ray explores and defines each component of the human experience, traveling through darkness into gray and finally, back to light. Light & Dark: Reflections on the Human Experience is a lighthouse for spiritual beings who find themselves lost or stuck in the pain of being human and offers the hope and reassurance of a way out. The book is a reminder that you are not alone.

Welcome to a compelling conservation about conservation, ecology, public lands, and PATH OF THE PANTHER, a fantastic book and film that provides a deep dive into the uncharted world of the Florida panther. It's a race against time to reveal the natural history of an icon surviving in an ancient ecosystem.
Carlton Ward Jr. is a conservation photographer focused on wild Florida. He founded the Florida Wildlife Corridor project in 2010 and has since trekked 2,000 miles during two National Geographic supported expeditions to advocate for the corridor’s protection. The most recent Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition is the subject of the new film, The Forgotten Coast, featured at the Environmental Film Festival in Washington, D.C. and broadcast nationally on PBS in 2016. An eighth-generation Floridian, Ward has developed strong connections with conservation organizations, researchers, and landowners. His family owns a ranch in the Peace River Valley that provides habitat for Florida panthers and he has several cousins who are full-time cowboys in the Greater Everglades. He is now working as an ambassador for the recovery of the Florida panther, a plan that calls for conservation of hundreds of thousands of acres of ranchlands and forests and across Florida.
Aaron Kindle is lifelong Westerner, originally from Wyoming, who possesses a deep appreciation for the West, its people, and its wild country. He comes to National Wildlife Federation from Trout Unlimited, where he worked on public lands issues for their Sportsmen’s Conservation Project for four and a half years. Aaron went to college in Gunnison, Colorado, and received his M.S. from the University of Montana. He is an avid hunter, angler, boater, and all-around outdoor enthusiast. He lives with his wife and two children in Salida, CO, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Central Colorado Conservancy.

Vicki Ash Hunter relies on running to satisfy her competitive nature and keep her body and mind healthy and strong. She credits running with her survival after horrific accidents and injuries and today works with athletes of all abilities to help them move better. Her running resume is stacked with elite events and iconic races, including the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials and the Boston and Pikes Peak marathons. She is retired from the University of Colorado, where she taught Political Science for 25 years, and lives in Boulder and Kona, Hawaii.
Guest co-host Hillary Allen is a professional athlete based in Boulder, Colorado. She is the author of OUT AND BACK and podcast host of Trail Society Podcast. Hillary spoke about her book on Episode 23 of The Travis Macy Show.
About RUNNING AND RETURNING:
For Vicki Ash Hunter, Ph.D., running was an escape. Compelled to move her body, flee her perceived inadequacies, and shed her sadness, Hunter found solace - and success - in competitive and endurance-distance running. She established herself as a national-class athlete, qualified for the marathon Olympic Trials in 1988, and became a trusted coach to others. Even after a life-threatening accident, motherhood, and, later, a shockingly life-altering injury, nothing could keep her from the roads and trails around her Boulder, Colorado, home.
But what was she running from?
In this, her introspective and insightful memoir, Hunter explores how generational trauma, including her mother's reliance on food and drugs; her daughter's drug use; and her own overzealousness with exercise impacted her family and how, in her early 60s, she is finding her way toward balance, strength, and confidence. She reflects on how she, her mother, and her daughter experience ratzo v'shov, (as it's known in Judaism), the spiritual act of running in its many forms and returning to appreciation grounded in self-love.
