Welcome back to Inspirational Interludes, the short but impactful segment of Voices of Inspiration. I'm your host, Amelia Old, and in this episode we are exploring how travel changes your perspective and traveling for self-discovery.

Amelia:

Solo travel is a remarkable journey of self-discovery. It's about embracing the thrill of solitude, learning life's invaluable lessons and forging a profound connection with the world. It's an expedition that fosters personal growth and transformation. But here's the twist Solo travel isn't just about the external world. It's also a deep dive into our inner landscapes. When we travel alone, we create moments of solitude and reflection that allow us to gain new insights into ourselves, our dreams and our place in the world. Solo travel excites the adventurer in us. It's the joy of charting your course, making spontaneous decisions and fully immersing yourself in your surroundings. The world becomes your playground and every moment is a potential adventure.

Amelia:

Navigating unfamiliar territory alone can be a formidable task, but it's also a powerful teacher. Every challenge, from deciphering complex public transportation systems to finding your way through unknown streets this builds self-reliance and problem-solving skills. Traveling alone heightens your senses. You become more attuned to the sights, the sounds and the sensations around you. This heightened awareness fosters a deeper connection with the places you visit and a greater appreciation for the world's beauty. Moments of solitude and reflection, these solo moments. They provide an opportunity for introspection, whether you're silently witnessing a breathtaking sunset or sipping coffee in a bustling cafe. These interludes of solitude allow for self-discovery and personal reflection. Traveling alone it doesn't just change the surroundings. It transforms your perspective on life. It challenge your beliefs and it broadens your horizons. You learn to embrace the unknown and find beauty in unexpected turns. Now let's weave these insights together with practical tips on how travel changes your perspective. Number one embrace the unfamiliar. Travel it often takes us out of our comfort zones, and that might mean trying a dish that you can't pronounce, or navigating foreign transportation systems, or immersing yourself in a culture that fills worlds apart from your own. Embrace the unfamiliar.

Amelia:

When I was younger, I had the worst fear of sitting alone and having a meal, whether that was lunch or dinner or a cocktail. In my 20s, I think many of us have taken food to our cars during our lunch breaks. Looking back, though, it wasn't so much of me being afraid of being somewhere alone. It was me being afraid of what others thought of me being alone. I know that sounds silly, and you know we can't worry what others think, otherwise we may miss something magical in front of us, and that's probably a topic that I could speak on in an episode all on its own. I remember the first time I went to London by myself for a travel conference. I was really scared. I didn't wanna miss anything, but I was afraid of doing everything by myself. But I made sure to go to restaurants and go sightseeing, and of course I had to use transportation, and it was scary, but I learned that I was perfectly capable of navigating my way around. I was perfectly capable of sitting and having a meal alone and just taking in the surroundings.

Amelia:

Connect with locals. Engaging with locals can provide insights into a place that guidebooks can offer. Strike up conversations, ask for recommendations, participate in local activities. The connections you form can be among the most rewarding aspects of your journey. I know I spoke about this in last episode, but I will forever push how important it is to get to know the locals.

Amelia:

If you're on a solo trip, I understand how scary that may be. I get it. Just make sure you're taking on safety precautions. I mean, don't hop in a car with a stranger, don't walk down dark alleyways at night alone. Be smart, however. Getting to know the locals will allow you to understand the way of life in the destination you are visiting Far more than it will if you're only focusing on touristy activities.

Amelia:

Be open to change. Travel rarely goes exactly as planned, and that's not a bad thing. That can be a good thing. Be open to change and spontaneity. Some of the most memorable experiences occur when you allow your journey to take unexpected turns. My husband and I were not really big on schedule trips like. We don't like big itineraries where you have to be in this place at this time and that place at a different time. It's more fun to see where the day and evening takes us. Often this includes taking recommendations from locals. During a visit to Paris, we ended up in an underground bar that was actually featured in La La Land. I don't speak French but I ended up dancing with a local and he spoke French to me the entire dance and told me what to spin and what to dip and when to turn. I really have no idea exactly what he said to me, but I just kind of gathered and he probably thought I was the most awful dancer. But it was still fun and it was still a great experience and I have all of these memories from that, from traveling off the beaten path.

Amelia:

Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness is the art being present in the moment. When you travel. Try to fully immerse yourself in your surroundings. Take in the sights and the sounds and the sense around you. It can help you appreciate the beauty of each place you visit. Challenge your assumptions. Travel challenges the assumptions and stereotypes we hold about other cultures. Be mindful of preconceived notions and allow yourself to see the world with fresh eyes. Approach each destination with an open heart and an open mind. Embrace solitude. Solo travel can be particularly transformative, as we've talked about. It forces you to rely on yourself and allows for introspection. Embrace moments of solitude and use them as an opportunity for self discovery and personal growth.

Amelia:

Keep a travel journal. This is one of my favorite things. Write down your thoughts and experiences at the end of each day. This can help you process your journey and capture the changes in your perspective. It's a valuable tool for self reflection. How did you feel? What did you do? Did the day go as planned? Did you try new food? Did you learn something new? Your thoughts on paper may surprise you.
