Type I and Type II Muscle Fibers
There are two important types of skeletal muscle. Type I, also called slow-twitch, is composed of small fibers. They fire more slowly than fast twitch fibers and can go for a long time before they fatigue. For that reason they are used primarily for long-endurance feats such as distance running or cycling.
Type II muscle fibers, also called fast-twitch, are large muscle fibers that that fire rapidly but fatigue faster. They are used in powerful bursts of movements like sprinting where one needs to quickly generate a lot of force.

On average, people have about 50 percent slow twitch and 50 percent fast twitch fibers in most of the muscles used for movement.
