North Carolina, and it discovered that saying thank you and other expressions of gratitude, they serve as some of the most important factors in the life of a person if that person wants to begin and to nurture lifelong relationships. 00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:05.439 The lead researcher on this project, her name is Sarah Algo, out of this project, she uh coined this phrase. 00:03:05.599 --> that tells us then that a thank you is what brings people together and holds people together. 00:03:25.439 --> 00:03:33.840 Thank you is relational glue because it recognizes the good things that relational glue as moms and dads looked into the eyes of their children and then embraced their children. 00:04:03.599 --> 00:04:10.159 Thank you in that moment brought a parent and a child together. 00:04:10.560 --> 00:04:24.800 And if over the next months and years and decades they continue to say thank you to each other, it's quite likely they can nurture a healthy, lifelong relationship. One of my favorite authors, his name is Dallas Willard, and Dallas puts it this way: he says, a healthy faith before God cannot be built and maintained without heartfelt celebration of his greatness always ask God for more, more, more. 00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:42.720 And we never stop and say, thank you for what you've already given to me, for what you've already done in my life. 00:05:42.959 --> for all the ways you've already met my needs. 00:05:57.839 --> 00:06:09.439 Or Psalm 50, verse 23, puts it this way: Giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. 00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:19.279 A person who honors God, that's a person who's nurturing a healthy, lifelong relationship with God. 00:06:19.680 --> 00:06:27.439 And according to Psalm 50, verse 23, that person knows it's so important --> 00:08:20.560 And if that ingratitude, listen, if it persists for long enough, the gap becomes a cavern, that becomes a canyon, and then finally it just feels like you are totally distant and prayers that allow us to draw close to God because these one-word prayers help us avoid often the meaningless words that we say. 00:09:12.720 --> 00:09:21.679 These one-word prayers allow us to focus not on what we gain from God, but just being with God and listening to the voice of God. 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:24.879 Our first one-word prayer was that word father. 00:09:25.120 --> 00:09:35.759 And we pray, Father, and we're reminded that God desires an intimate relationship, and He grants us instant access. 00:09:36.559 --> 00:09:40.720 And today's one-word prayer, you've probably already figured it out. 00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:42.960 It's the word thanks. 00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:53.519 And it's a one-word prayer that we have to put into a daily rotation because this one-word prayer is praise, so it could be called the great praise, or you could maybe even translate it the great thank you. 00:10:22.879 --> 00:10:36.960 And this psalm, what it does is it gives us the one true reason we pray a prayer of thanksgiving to God while we say thanks to God, and it's going to give us the recipe to how we can do it every single day. 00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:46.159 Now, we're going to read home following the Babylonian exile. 00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:59.679 To be honest, it seems to me that's a peculiar moment in the life of Israel to offer the great thank you. 00:15:00.480 --> 00:15:10.080 Maybe they're thankful because they finally are able to leave Babylon, but it took 70 years. 00:15:10.879 --> 00:15:12.399 Are you kidding me? 00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:16.720 For 70 years they lived in a foreign land. 00:15:17.759 --> 00:15:28.960 For 70 years, God's people lived in a home that was not really their home, and the home that they wanted to live in, well, it was hundreds of miles away and it was lying in disrepair. 00:15:29.039 --> 00:15:31.120 It had been destroyed. 00:15:31.679 --> 00:15:49.039 For 70 years, God's people lived in a place, and it was this constant daily reminder that they had sinned against God and God had judged their sin and now they dealt with the consequences of that sin every single day. 00:15:50.080 --> 00:15:59.279 After 70 years, I'll be honest, I don't know if thanks is the first, second, or third word that comes out of my mouth. 00:16:00.559 --> 00:16:07.279 After 70 years, I maybe my prayer is a little bit more, you know, filled that he had failed you. 00:16:41.440 --> 00:16:48.559 When everything's going my way, when events turn out in my favor, I'm quick to say thank you to God. 00:16:49.840 --> 00:17:03.360 But when life is hard, when life is unfair, when the stress of life is unrelenting, thanks isn't the first, the second, or the third word that comes out of my mouth. 00:17:04.799 --> 00:17:20.240 Which is why I, and maybe you so badly need the words, the instruction of Psalm 136, because the reason we say thanks, the reason we pray thanks is not connected to the circumstances of our life. 00:17:21.119 --> and that prayer of saying thanks is not the result or driven by circumstance, but it's in response to God's unconditional, unending, always eternal love for his children, for his family, for his is, and God's actions. 00:22:29.599 --> 00:22:36.480 Here are some of God's attributes that are either named or alluded to in Psalm 136. 00:22:36.640 --> 00:22:42.880 The first one, good, says, He is good. 00:22:44.160 --> 00:22:47.920 God is the original definition of good. 00:22:48.319 --> 00:22:50.640 He is good in and of himself. 00:22:50.880 --> 00:22:52.400 He is morally excellent. 00:22:52.559 --> 00:22:54.400 He is extraordinarily beautiful. 00:22:54.640 --> 00:22:59.839 He is deeply glad, and he is extravagantly generous. 00:23:00.319 --> 00:23:01.920 He is good. 00:23:03.839 --> 00:23:08.079 Another quality attribute of God we see is that he is sovereign. 00:23:08.319 --> 00:23:11.200 It says that he is Lord of Lords. 00:23:12.880 --> 00:23:17.039 In other words, God is the one who is over all of creation. 00:23:17.200 --> 00:23:24.799 God is the one whose plans will never fail, who is bringing his purpose to bear on this world. 00:23:25.759 --> 00:23:27.759 Another prayer, thanks, we are reminded of these attributes of God and so many more. 00:25:17.519 --> 00:25:31.519 And in my life, often what happens when I pray thanks, and I'm reminded of the attributes of God is it then highlights my own limitations. 00:25:33.200 --> 00:25:41.599 I pray thanks, and I'm reminded how good God is, and I'm reminded that I'm not very good at all. 00:25:42.400 --> limitations in life, or is it just my therapy session? 00:26:42.240 --> 00:26:56.160 But when I pray thanks and I reflect on the attributes of God, I'm drawn closer to him because I'm reminded just
