How do you handle opposition when you're trying to rebuild your life and faith?

In Ezra 3-4, the returned exiles finally lay the foundation for the new Temple, only to hit an immediate wall of discouragement, political backstabbing, and intimidation.

It’s a situation that feels all too familiar for anyone taking a step forward in their spiritual journey. When we try to draw closer to God, the enemy won't just sit back and watch.

In our Ezra 3–4 Bible study, we cover:

  • [2:51] The Priority of the Altar: Why the exiles build the altar first and how it points directly to Jesus as our ultimate sacrifice.
  • [10:29] Bittersweet Celebrations: Why the younger generation shouts for joy when the new foundation is complete, while the older generation weeps.
  • [12:21] The New Testament Temple: What Paul teaches about our temple today and how we can evaluate and rebuild it.
  • [18:08] Spotting Fake Allies: Why Zerubbabel and Joshua reject the Samaritans' offer to "help," and how the enemies respond.
  • [19:23] Tactics of the Enemy: Four common ways the opposition tries to derail our faith, from subtle lies to outright intimidation.

Ezra Show Notes

Group Discussion Questions for Ezra 3-4

  1. [13:40] For Christians, Jesus replaced the physical Temple, and now we are all collectively and individually God's Temple. What is the current state of your temple? Does it need any rebuilding, foundation work, or expansion?
  2. [19:55] The enemy tempts us to compromise our morals, goals, and faith by introducing subtle doubts, as he did with Eve, "Did God really say…?" In what areas of your life have you felt tempted to compromise a belief or your work for the Lord?
  3. [20:28] The enemy often uses psychological warfare by tormenting us with the memory of past sins we've already confessed. How might it change your response to this type of attack if you paused and reminded yourself that you are forgiven and a new creation in Christ?
