You Can’t Do Anything About It

I’m on record as someone who has little time for complainers.

There are certainly legitimate complaints and they’re to be voiced and heard.

What I recommend you be silent about are the complaints you can do nothing about. They only frustrate you and me about a solution neither of us can see.

Back in the 70s there was a book called “Looking Out For #1” by Robert Ringer. One of the lines I remember is, “a clerk is a jerk.” He didn’t mean that as a personal putdown of clerks. It was his way of saying if you have a problem, don’t complain to someone who can’t help you. Go to the person higher on the food chain who can.

Complaints about a rainy weekend to a friend, family member, or to no one in particular fall on ears that can’t help you. That doesn’t mean you can’t be flustered about it. Just know that complaining about it isn’t going to chase away the weather or your frustration.

The weather is something you can’t do anything about. But the silver lining is you may be able to find someone to help you feel less frustrated.

There are some things you can’t do anything about. We can resist them or accept them. Resisting just increases your frustration; accepting leads to a path away from your dismay.

The lesson here for all of us is accepting reality. If you can do something about it, put on your shoes and go to work. If you can’t, don’t waste your time with a rant.

All the best,

John
