Reaction To Aversion

I was struck with the word “aversion” the other day. It caused me to go find a dictionary.

Aversion: A strong dislike. O.K., that sounds about right.

It says here that it’s derived from the Latin verb “avertere” which means “turn away from.”

Soon after I heard the word aversion in my head, It was immediately followed by the word “reaction.”

It became instantly obvious to me that the words are linked at the hip. When we have an aversion to something, our aversion is a predictable reaction to that something.

It may prove helpful here for me to assert that reactions are robotic. They happen without any thought on our part and we automatically dole out an instant response.

We are taken out of the decision making process when we have an aversion (a reaction) to something. It happens instantly without our consent.

I’m reminded of the wise words of Dr. Dave Dobson: “When something makes you uncomfortable, get closer to it.” He suggested to find out, first hand, what you’re turning away from. It will give you a finer appreciation of that something and, perhaps, not make it something to be avoided at all costs.

Getting closer is a choice, one you don’t get to make when your instant reactions “take the cake.”

You can live in a bigger world when you don’t take a small minded, reactive approach. You enrich yourself with broader perspectives instead of having an aversion to choice.

Bottom line: Robotic reactions don’t have any traction on the highway of choice.

All the best,

John
