Teacher or Trainer

The idea of teacher or trainer popped into my mind the other day and it sparked this question: Do I want to rent or own what they have to offer?

Before I could answer that question, I had to parse out the difference between a teacher or trainer. To me, a teacher puts out information for consumption; a trainer drills you in the information being offered.

I further looked up the word “educate” and found it comes from the Latin word, “educare” which means to train or mold.

A teacher doesn’t train or mold; they simply offer information. They set the table and put out the food. It’s up to you to eat it. In other words it’s up to you to learn.

A trainer, by contrast, is hands on and puts you through the moves that puts action into learning.

There are some brilliant teachers who set the table so nicely that you can’t help but eat what they prepare. Cherish those folks. They make you want to learn.

But if you already know the information but aren’t putting it to use, you need a trainer.

Let’s say you know that an exercise regime is necessary for healthful living but don’t act on that information. You, at that point, need a trainer – someone who’s going to supervise or assist your movements until they’re second nature. In the case of exercise, this person can be a workout buddy – someone who shows up at your door, rain or shine, to do your routine with you.

If you want to be a better writer, a better speaker, a better cook, or a better whatever, you’ll benefit greatly by seeking out a trainer.

Playwright George Bernard Shaw left us with this phrase: “Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.” To my ears, that’s a little harsh and offhandedly disparages teachers. Teachers are a necessary part of any society and quite adept at what they do: offering you something to learn.

But if you don’t take that ball and run with it, you’ll only posses the knowledge of the game, and not the action necessary to reach some level of fame.

There are folks who are both teachers and trainers and their assistance is the most sought after, and for good reason. Learn from one of them and you’ll perform season after season.

All the best,

John
