Comfortable Beliefs
You may have heard me say a time or two that we're a collection of our beliefs. And the bulk of them, I’m sad to say, we can’t validate, but we fervently believe in them.
For example, many people believe in heaven and hell, yet there isn’t a shred of evidence that either one exists. But webelieve they do.
We have too many unsubstantiated beliefs to count, so let’s take a look at the upside of believing.
I often ask a client if a belief is working for them. If not, I recommend they get a new belief. A belief that’s not working for you is one that gets in your way, a roadblock so to speak.
But what's the benefit of believing in something that’s beyond belief? I believe I have an answer.
If your belief brings you comfort, hang onto it. That belief is delivering a benefit - one you won’t get from a belief that’s standing in your way.
A comfortable belief is not one you’ll argue about. You’ll just bask in the warm fuzzies it delivers, and not have to deal with the angst of endless debate.
You’re not trying to sell or defend this comforting belief to anyone. It’s your secret – you’re comfortable slippers to slip into when others are outfitting themselves for war.
Hey, we all believe in things we can’t validate, but it may be useful to examine them from time to time, to see if they bring you comfort, or make you whine.
Then you’ll know, for sure, which ones to kick to the curb, and the ones to keep around for comfort.
All the best,
John
