Stop Knowing Knowing Nothing

Most arguments I hear are an exchange of opinions disguised as facts. It doesn’t matter if they’re in the checkout line at the supermarket or on TV during a political debate. They claim they know, but have nothing to show.

Instead of saying you know something that you can’t back up, try something like this instead: “I suspect” or “I’m guessing here,” and follow one of those phrases with what you suspect or guess.

A suspicion or guess won’t be met with as much resistance as an opinion devoid of fact. That’s a fact!

I don’t believe I’ve ever heard a debate that solved anything or changed anyone’s mind.

I’ve retired from entering debates because they’re loaded with half-truths, conjecture, hyperbole, and misinformation. There are no winners in debates, only lost time arguing for an opinion. I’d rather watch Matlock reruns.

Many people who claim to know, know nothing. They’re either repeating something they heard but haven’t verified, or think they are so insightful that they know the truth without evidence. They believe they’re offering you facts, but they wouldn’t know a fact if it handed them a business card.

“Knowing” fosters resistance, so stop knowing, especially if you want your point of view to be heard. The minute you claim to know, you can witness other peoples’ shields go up protecting them from your pile of snow.

I’m as opinionated as the next person and I’ll shower you with them if asked. What I won’t do is dress them up as facts. It helps me avoid attacks.

If you don’t know, don’t claim something as so. It’ll keep you off the battlefield in a place where you’re safe, a place where you’ll remain unharmed, especially when unarmed.

All the best,

John
