Down The Road

The Grasshopper had this to say the other day:  “I can see down a road you’ve never been down.”

It reminded me that as we get older, we have more experiences that people who are generations younger don’t have.

That logically leads to this frame of mind: If they only knew what I know, they’d never take that fork.

It’s been said that youth is wasted on the young. It was certainly true for me as a younger man. Knowing it all lead to fall after fall. Many could’ve been avoided had I heeded the call from those who already traveled that road.

It reminds me of a story I’ve told many times. When I turned fifty, my dad called to wish me a happy birthday. After a bit of conversation, I asked him this: “Dad, you’ve already been fifty. What would you do differently if you were fifty again?” He didn’t hesitate. He said, “Save more money!” I wish I had taken his advice.

This old joke comes to mind: Save string while you’re young, and when you’re older you’ll have a ball.

But, one of the sad realities of gathered wisdom is this: There are few who will take it to heart, and won’t put the horse before the cart.

I know that I’m whistling in the wind lamenting about the road less traveled. But, maybe, just maybe this message will act as a GPS and help someone, perhaps you, avoid an avoidable mess.

All the best,

John
